CHRONOMASTER I Heritage 146
The Heritage 146 chronograph inspired by a 1960s watch features a retro look with a brown or blue dial, a 38 mm-diameter steel case and a column-wheel El Primero movement chronometer.
HERITAGE 146
Subtly reinterpreting an historical model, the Heritage 146 is a unique offering combining the best of the Manufacture’s past: design, history and true rarity. As one of the first historical watchmakers to be organised as a full-fledged Manufacture, Zenith has a legacy of more than 150 years upon which to draw. It naturally celebrates this heritage by periodically relaunching some of its iconic vintage models.
Vintage design and a high-precision ‘engine’ The new Heritage 146 offers a chronograph with central sweep-seconds hand and 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, as well as a tachymetric scale. This two-counter dial without a date window reflects a configuration typical of 1960s chronographs.
The case of this exclusive edition now frames two dial options: tropical brown or blue sunray-patterned with rhodium-coated baton hands. However, its key difference lies in the fact that it beats to the lively rhythm of 36,000 vibrations per hour, dictated by the automatic high-beat El Primero Calibre 4069. Regulated and adjusted to meet chronometer standards, this 254-part columnwheel chronograph calibre – wound by an oscillating weight adorned with “Côtes de Genève” – drives an extremely accurate tenth-of-a-second display and has an over 100-hour power reserve. Its high-frequency mechanism is housed in a 38 mm-diameter vintage-style steel case that is waterresistant to 50 meters and features a fluted crown as well as two round pushers. The screw-down sapphire crystal caseback has an anti-reflective treatment on both sides. The final touch is set by a racing-style strap in a choice of brown or blue rubber-lined calfskin leather.
Vintage chronograph lovers are bound to find it irresistible!

COLLISION CONF @ NOLA
YADA, YADA, YADA, ...
I was a bit surprised when I first heard that Collision Conf for 2017 was being held in New Orleans. “The Big Easy”, as it’s nicknamed, is known more for Blues music, Cajun cuisine and the incontrovertible Mardi Gras than it is for a throbbing tech scene, I thought.
Every startup is remarkable in some way, or it wouldn’t ‘start’ in the first place, let alone making it to the beta series of a prestigious startup conference. Yada Events is one such startup that stuck out above the crowd of alphas and betas at Collision.
Yet that’s exactly what New Orleans got a taste of this May - In a “collision” of two very different worlds, “NOLA” got immersed in geek culture and the heady startup buzz of Bay Area lore. The melting-pot of future-enabling ideas brought to life by technizens, mixed with a unique blend of centuries old culture and history is not easily found elsewhere and had to be experienced in person. What’s extraordinary about New Orleans is that it is a world within a world - while being within the continental US, you still feel like you’re visiting a far away land with a very unique and exciting culture. It’s French, but not quite; Spanish but not really Spanish. It’s some mix of both those plus African, Cuban, and Latin, within the larger context of being American - a true melting pot if there ever was one. Nowhere else do you see blended cultures and traditions celebrated in such an easy and vibrant manner. NOLA, what an amazing and unforgettable delight you are!
While there may be many factors that determine the success of any startup, the key ingredient that sets Yada Events apart from others is that it has a real and meaningul purpose. Yada wishes to do for events what Salesforce did for CRM, facebook did for social, twitter for breaking news, Pinterest for ideas, and so on. Yada wants to make it easier to organize, discover and participate in events. I met the lovely Mehram Sumray-Roots, co-founder of Yada Events, who is inspired and driven by its vision and purpose. The Yada team has the very real opportunity to touch the lives of a large portion of humanity and in doing so make our lives just a little bit easier. Wish you guys the very best of luck - stay true to your vision and you will one day get there! http://yada.events
FOR THE LOVE OF ALFA It’s been called a “baby Ferrari” by perhaps the most ardent of Italian automobile aficionados in Calgary, Carlo Galasso. “This is a sexy, mid-engined Italian exotic carved down to affordable scale”, says another. “It’s an absolute blast driving this junior supercar”, said.. actually, that was me.. I said that. Don’t let that superlow price tag fool you, and make no mistake, the Alfa Romeo 4C is no baby. Get behind the wheel and it will make a run for your heart, making it thump like it’s about to jump out of your chest, as it harnesses the power of hundreds of thundering horses under the bonnet - it’s addictively fast as it kicks it up to 62 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds! The multiple G’s of pressure produced by the caged beasts may induce a flighty lightness of being if you’re of even a slightly feeble build yourself. But, don’t just sit there gaping at it, get yourself over to Alfa and take this tantalizing Italian carbon-fibre beauty out on a date ;-)

ROBERT SWEEP In the latest spring edition, Robert Sweep anticipated the new and upcoming shift to interior functionality and exquisite materials and designs. The intricacy and sophistication of brands exclusive to Robert Sweep, showcase ideal statement pieces that compliment the most luxurious home. This year, interior professionals are noticing the importance of accentuating such items and are educating clients on the importance of statement lighting. Think of it as an extension of your interior combined with a prominent feature for your home. Your lighting sculpture should capture and highlight your most loved stylish pieces but also steal focus as the main artistic feature in the room. Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements in good interior design. It is the pinnacle of presenting your statement pieces. Vogue magazine describes lighting as ‘the perfect way to show off your unique design sensibility’. It’s a way to reinvent your living space from flat or dated décor. Without adequate light exposure, your surroundings cannot truly be appreciated. If you think of all the artistic mediums out there, it is evident that lighting plays an important role in setting tone and creating mood. That’s why it is so famously relied upon in artistic culture; even the beauty of true artists cannot be captured without the perfect combination of light.
Anglepoise Giant Floor Lamp
Anglepoise Introducing Anglepoise, an iconic British brand that has endured the test of time. Pioneered in the 1930s, Anglepoise has built an empire on stylistic energy efficient tasks lamps across both commercial and domestic interiors. Over the years, they have attracted some of Britain’s most accomplished designers, such as Sir Kenneth George, who received knighthood for his services to design. Shortly after Sir Kenneth George became Design Director in 2003, Anglepoise was approached by The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre to make a giant version of the definitive 1227 Original lamp. It was learned that Dahl himself owned the 1227 Original lamp and it stood on his writing desk as he wrote his most celebrated masterpieces. The GIANT 1227 received such praise and hype from the few created, that Anglepoise had no other choice than to extend it into volume production. The Original 1227Born in 1935, the Anglepoise Original 1227 remains to this

M O N TB LAN C CELEBRATES IT’S
110TH ANNIVERSARY WITH AN
EXQUISITE NEW COLLECTION WORDS: KATE MISSINE

The sharp precision of Montblanc is second to none; from the smooth glide of its legendary fountain pen; to the impeccable movement of timepieces crafted in its
Swiss horlogerie. A visionary since its founding in 1906, Montblanc entered the world of watchmaking in 1997. Twenty years later, the company is continuing on its path of state-of-the-art luxury, celebrating its 110th anniversary with additions to its two renowned collections: the classic 4810, and the refined Bohème. Taking its name from the 4,810 metre height of Europe’s highest mountain, the Mont Blanc, the 4810 collection is a statement to Montblanc’s pioneering spirit. Two new 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim

models, in elegant white gold and red gold versions, showcase the Maison’s patented complication. ‘Exo’, Greek for ‘external’, indicates the screw balance positioned outside of the tourbillon’s rotating cage. The impressively lightweight cage is disconnected from the balance wheel, which means an all-new level of precision and isochronism for the wearer; while a newly added quick stop-second function allows the user to set the time to the exact second with an immediate restart of the movement. True to its name, the Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim boasts an exceptionally thin profile of only 10.14 mm on the 42 mm case, set atop an understated black alligator strap. An 18K white gold version contrasts the dark blue aventurine dial, evoking a star-strewn night sky underneath skeletonized regate-shaped hands. A second version in 18K red gold features a shimmery guilloché dial in the iconic Montblanc Star pattern, with red gold-plated, SuperLumiNova®-enhanced hands and 18 diamonds at the number XII, while the bezel sparkles with 68 diamonds totaling 1.326 carats.
26
Finally, a 4810 Dual Time model marks another first for Montblanc, with the debut of its dual time complication designed for the modern traveler. With a 24-hour subdial with day/night indication, and different-colored home time and local hour hands (one blue; the other, red gold), changing the destination time while traveling becomes a snap. And as always, no Montblanc timepiece is released without undergoing its extensive Test 500 for durability, simulating over 500 hours of real-life wear. While the 4810 models exude unisex appeal, Montblanc’s additions to its feminine Bohème collection are just for the ladies. Rife with exquisite technique
including
guilloché,
gem-setting,
miniature gold-work, and hand-painting, and set with delicate details such as leaf-shaped hands, floral Arabic numerals, and interchangeable straps, the new Bohème ExoTourbillon Slim is a dedication to the contemporary woman. In a special anniversary edition, Montblanc Bohème ExoTourbillon Slim 110 Years Anniversary takes its design from Montblanc’s first fountain pen, Rouge et Noir, and draws on the mysterious symbol of the serpent, with the diamond-scaled, ruby-eyed creature coiling around the dial in blue lacquer.

ALFA INTERVIEW BY: SAM DHAND
His love of cars, particularly sports cars of the Italian variety, drove him from a very young age to dabble excel at creative and exciting ventures within the automobile landscape. He brought us the much loved “car bra”, a rage among automobile aficionados looking as much to dress up their baby as to protect it from the elements. Many a heart-thumping racetrack rides over the years have landed him at the helm of one of Alberta’s most enviable premium automobile dealership collections: Rolls-Royce; Ferrari; Maserati - his name is Carlo Galasso, and his latest offering to the car lovers of Alberta is another much loved Italian brand. We caught up with Carlo, for a conversation behind a pulse racing 505 hp engine in the Giulia Quadrifoglio from none other than Alfa Romeo!
Alfa Romeo is Italian, and Italian cars have a soul...

I FELL IN LOVE WITH ALFA ROMEOS WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. THE FIRST DEALERSHIP WITH ALFA ROMEO EXISTED ON MCLEOD TRAIL, I WENT IN THERE WITH MY DAD THE FIRST TIME, HE LOVED CARS JUST AS I DO. I WENT TO THE SPORTS CAR SECTION AND THERE WAS A SPIDER AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. WE ENDED UP BUYING THE FIAT INSTEAD,..(LAUGHS)... BUT I NEVER FORGOT ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO

went in there with my Dad the first time, he loved cars just as I do. I went to the sports car section and there was a Spider and I fell in love with it. We ended up buying the Fiat instead,..(laughs)... but I never forgot about the Alfa Romeo. It’s always been in my heart and I had to fight very hard to get this store, and yesterday they announced that I also got the Edmonton store, and I had to fight even harder to get that one. Sam dHand: You seem to have a special fondness for the Alfa Romeo brand. Is there some history behind this fondness? Carlo Galasso: My family was born in a small town called Sant’Andrea, it’s not more than a village inside of a mountain with a few hundred people. I don’t know why but Mr. Marchionne chose Cassino to build all the Alfa Romeo vehicles that we currently get, the Stelvio & the Giulia. Cassino is a few minutes from my mum & dad’s hometown where they were born . So the cars that I am selling today were built on the ground where my mother & father were born. Six of
Sam dHand: Where does Alfa Romeo fit in the luxury automobiles strata? Carlo Galasso: Alfa Romeo is being touted as a premium brand and it competes with Audi, Mercedes & BMW, it wouldn’t be entry level, but more for a successful family. It’s Italian and Italian cars have a soul. The Graduate introduced Alfa Romeo to more people and once they experienced one they knew that Alfa Romeos are amazingly special vehicles. There’s a saying that ‘Unless you’ve owned or driven an Alfa Romeo you’re not a true Auto Enthusiast’. Sam dHand: What shall we take a spin in today? Carlo Galasso: The special model that we’ve got waiting for us to drive today is called the ‘Quadrifoglio’. The Quadrifoglio is a four leaf clover in Italian. Quadro means four and Foglia means leaf. In the early days when Alfa Romeo was racing in Formula 1, they had a
my relatives still work at the plant! So I fought hard to make sure that I get the brand for both cities and I’m going to make sure that we sell as much as I possibly can. (Touchwood) Sam dHand: What’s the Edmonton market like for these car brands? Carlo Galasso: I’ve nurtured the Edmonton market over the last 10 years and its grown to be a strong market for us too. I think the manufactures supported my vision and gave me & my partner the Edmonton store because I’ve worked hard to grow and make it prosper there. They love cars out there. Sam dHand: What drove you to bring such iconic brands to Alberta? Carlo Galasso: The thing that I love about the brands that I represent is that they like to create original examples, Rolls-Royce has realized that for them to become the premium car brand in the world they need to make authentic examples. We were in London a month ago where they unveiled the brand new Phantom, and myself, my client and my son were the first in the world to view the car publicly, it was
streak of bad luck and they weren’t winning, so somebody decided to put a 4 leaf clover on one of their race cars, and from then on they started to win again. So the 4 leaf clover for Alfa Romeo meant it was good luck and that it was a special vehicle. It was like when Enzo Ferrari showed up in the race with redheads on the engine..? It meant it was trouble for everybody! So that’s what the 4 leaf clover
a great honour!

had to gain the hearts and minds of everyone again, just like they did back then, remember Graduate when Dustin Hoffman was driving the little Alfa Remeo?.. well that captured people’s hearts, they were quirky little vehicles but when you drove one you knew they were magic. They’ve captured that again and the FCA group have done an amazing job of putting the reliability into everything, they’re amazing cars now. Ferrari is a unique example as well, everything in it is authentic.
good luck. That’s why on the side there’s the 4 leaf clover emblem as
Sam dHand: What’s it like to drive the Quadrifoglio? Carlo Galasso: My son & I had the Quadrifoglio on the race track in New Orleans and I was going around the corner and I looked down at my dashboard and it read 137 and I didn’t feel it and it was even more amazing because it was miles/hour! What FCA did is that they brought the best of their team to work on this car, this is like a baby Ferrari.

THE GENIUS OF
ELON MUSK A
At one point in Elon Musk’s childhood, his parents were afraid he may be deaf. An avid daydreamer, he had the tendency to look
off into space when spoken to. A workup revealed that his hearing was just fine; his mind was simply busy conjuring up the next venture on his ambitious list – a trait that would prove to serve him well. Growing up in South Africa, Musk was a quiet child who struggled to find acceptance and a niche for his big ideas. At age 12, he taught himself computer coding – in 1983, this was no common feat, years away from today’s plethora of STEM education opportunities – leading to the creation of a video game which he then sold for $500. This would be the first of the countless projects conceived by the modernday magnate and inventor – some profitable; some not; some earthshattering, and others failures to launch; but all with one thing in common: the visionary creative genius that has driven their conception. With some of his latest undertakings now challenging the boundaries not only of science and technology, but of the universe itself, one thing is certain – this is a man not afraid to take risks and to embrace uncharted territory. The son of a Canadian model and a South African engineer, Elon Musk is known to most as co-founder of Tesla Motors, the groundbreaking company that has redefined the electric car industry. But Musk’s entrepreneurial streak got its start much earlier. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania, he enrolled in the physics graduate program at Stanford, only to drop out after just two days; choosing instead to try his luck in the booming dot com market. In 1995, together with his brother, Musk founded his very first company – a directory service called Zip2. After selling it four years later, he went on to co-found X.com, an online payment system that later became PayPal. In 2003, Tesla Motors was incorporated, with Musk the CEO and chief engineer of the futuristic automobiles.

In the meantime, he is working to make life more sustainable here on Earth: in addition to Tesla’s paving the way for environmentally-conscious driving, he created SolarCity, now the second largest American solar power provider; and has chaired the Musk Foundation, which provides solar-power energy systems in disaster-stricken areas. The recipient of too many awards and recognitions to list, Musk’s incredible efforts

But as his biographer Ashlee Vance has written, the innovator has always been driven by ideas rather than success – and he is not planning on stopping. Whether it’s self-driving electric cars or a new life on another planet that the future holds for mankind, it’s safe to say that we will be hearing Elon Musk’s name in it again.

PEACE BRIDGING THE GAP FOR MILLITARY FAMILIES WORDS: KATE MISSINE :: IMAGES: JULIE VINCENT PHOTOGRAPHY
In the pre-dawn darkness on June 17th, 2017, Calgary’s iconic Peace Bridge was abuzz with action. “The first time I saw the bridge, I thought, wouldn’t this be a great place to have lunch?” recalls George Brookman, co-chair of Calgary’s Breakfast on the Bridge, as staff members rushed around him setting up Canadian flaginspired red and white décor. “Here we are, at 4 o’clock in the morning, and we’re about to produce the third Breakfast on the Bridge to benefit military families.”

The next step was to plan Breakfast on the Bridge: a one-of-a-kind fundraiser aiding the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre in supporting military families and victims of PTSD; held on summer solstice, the longest

Coinciding with Canada’s 150th anniversary, Breakfast on the Bridge 2017 gathered an elite crowd of 250 community leaders, movers, shakers, and philantropists. Walking down a path lined by uniformed servicemen to the sounds of the Canadian anthem, guests were greeted by a cocktail hour serving the signature
cocktail French 75, named after an artillery gun used in World War I. A sunrise ceremony took place at 5:30 am, followed by speeches and memorable performances. Representatives of the Calgary Flames Foundation, TELUS, TD Bank and others were among the invitees, joined by notable figures including Minister of Veteran Affairs Ken Hare, Canadian businessman W. Brett Wilson, and Calgary Stampede Indian Princess Savanna Sparvier. The keynote speaker and guest of honor was Canada’s Minister of Defence and veteran of Afghanistan, the Honourable Harjit Sajjan, who gave a powerful talk on Canada’s role within the world. Soulful melodies by singer songwriter Don Amero and bagpipe musicians set a moving mood, as attendees were served breakfast courtesy of Hotel Arts featuring all-Canadian specialties such as beaver tails. The event raised around $150,000, with proceeds going to support the families of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. “It resonates with me because my dad had PTSD when he came back from the second World War. We now look back and realize, if only we’d known,” commented Charles Hamel, Calgary Military Family Resource Center board chair. “It was just so wonderful to see George have this vision and then make the vision come to reality.”

ROLLS-ROYCE SWEPTAIL EVOKING THE SPIRIT OF THE 1920’S ROLLS ROYCE VINTAGE MODELS
In 2013, a valued long-time customer – an automobile connoisseur and discerning collector of unique cars, yachts, and aircraft – approached the RollsRoyce Motor Cars design team with a very particular request: a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof, that evokes the classic RollsRoyce spirit of the of the 1920s and 1930s.
62
63
Director of Design Giles Taylor wasted no time sketching out the concept for the client’s dream machine – a process culminating in a spellbinding addition to the Rolls-Royce bespoke lineup: the RollsRoyce Sweptail. “Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of Haute Couture,” said Taylor. “This customer came to the House of Rolls-Royce with an idea, shared in the creative process where we advised him on his cloth, and then we tailored that cloth to him. You might say we cut the cloth for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by.” The ‘suit’, in this case, is a sublime creation of carbon fiber and glass, sweeping over the two-seater coupe’s elegant lines and into the exquisite interior. Upfront, the focal point is the brand’s iconic Pantheon grille, the largest of any modern-era Royce, milled from solid aluminum and hand-polished. Tapered ‘swept tail’ rear ends, inspired by the early 20th century Phantoms, lend the car its name and signature silhouette, accented with a sweeping roofline, round doors, and a raked stern coup de gras borrowed from its racing heritage. The bodywork wraps seamlessly under the car akin to the hull of a yacht, with no visible boundaries. Giving the automobile its truly distinct personality is the panoramic glass roof; one of the largest and most complex ever seen, it allows the cabin to be flooded with natural light and unveils the interior – a masterpiece in its own right. Clean-lined and minimalist, the highlight here is on the quality of materials and impeccable handcrafting. Polished Macassar Ebony and open-pore Paldao adorn the cabin in abundance, the play of dark and light emphasized by contrasting light Moccasin and Dark Spice leathers. A sleek Macassar dashboard embeds a nifty titanium clock, and a wood-and-glass hat shelf lines the rear. Hidden along the sides is a pair of carbon fiber and leather attaché cases, along with a set of matching custom luggage for the discerning traveller in the trunk. In a final touch of luxe, the center console conceals an automated champagne cooler; at the press of a button, a bottle of vintage champagne – of the client’s birth year, no less – appears along with two crystal flutes. A car that serves its owner’s every whim, as if by magic – could we expect any less from the automaker that conceived the bespoke automobile?
