This has been an year of extremes. Notwithstanding the extremes in the real estate market and the ridiculous craziness of the weather, there were plenty of extremes worth taking note of in our luxury market. CARRAIG RIDGE WORDS: KATE MISSINE :: IMAGES: BENT RENÉ SYNNEVÅG

For Alberta developer Ian MacGregor, the greatest things come in small parcels.

When MacGregor, President and CEO at North West Refining Inc., first began acquiring parcels of land to the west of Calgary, he was doing more than simply preserving the site of his parents’ rural homestead. He was embarking on a mission: building a luxury community that honors its environment through careful, elegant designs and a culture of minimalism and preservation. “We want to have the best in contemporary architecture, not tract houses that are identical,” says MacGregor. With homes designed by internationally recognized architects for 44 topographically distinct lots, Carraig (Gaelic for “rock”) Ridge is certainly anything but a cookie-cutter development.

28

‘The Rock House’ was designed by James Cutler of Seattle-based Cutler Anderson Architects as a touchstone for design of future homes in a unique new community, Carraig Ridge, located between Cochrane and Canmore.

29

The Rock House, named for the sandstone outcropping surrounding it, is set on an extraordinarily panoramic site, among dense forest and a natural rock garden.

“I want the best architects in the world to come and do their best work, and we wanted to emphasize sensitivity to the landscape throughout the project” said MacGregor, who started the development by working with planning legend Christopher Alexander of Pattern Language fame to draw up a plan for the 6,000 acres of land slowly acquired over the last decade. From the outset, Carraig Ridge has been about developing in an environmentally-conscious manner: the bulk of the land would be preserved under a conservation easement, and a smaller section on its edge would become a carefully thought-out community. “The idea is small private lots integrated into an expansive, shared park. Residents of the community have access to thousands of acres of wilderness that you just don’t see in a typical subdivision,” MacGregor says. Renowned conservation planner Randall Arendt was brought in to assess the territory and fine-tune the development plan prior to breaking ground; the overarching objective was to ensure the magnificent natural setting was treated with the respect it deserved.

rooted in its tranquil landscape, emphasizing simplicity and a serene, rural sensibility. Owners can enjoy all the peacefulness of country living with none of the hassles – roads, utilities, and necessary infrastructure are in place. Each lot is private and secluded, while designated gathering spots and recreational areas allow residents to socialize and mingle with neighbours. “In many of these types of developments, people would come and build the biggest house they could afford,” remarks MacGregor, “but the quality would not be exceptional, the design would not be memorable. It’s not something they’re particularly proud of. We started with the idea of building the smallest house we can, that is the best-designed house to live in and experience the environment.” To that end, Carraig Ridge’s first home, the Rock House, is a testament to this philosophy - at only 750 square feet, it demonstrates that size does not determine luxury. Designed

“To build something that’s really high quality is more expensive, but it’s also more enjoyable than building something that’s just really big,” says MacGregor. In addition to Cutler, three additional world-class architects, including Seattle-based Tom Kundig, New York’s Bryan Young, and Norway-based Todd Saunders, have contributed to the community so far, each having designed a home or collection of homes for Carraig Ridge. “I enjoy building so I wanted to be involved in that process,” comments MacGregor, whose background in mechanical engineering equipped him with the necessary structural and building knowledge, as well as propelling him into the core of Alberta’s oil and gas industry. Currently, he is working on the construction of a $25-billion dollar refinery north of Edmonton. .

“On most models, a close-up view of the Moonphase disc reveals the iconic footprint left by Neil Armstrong.”

I

In 1969, as the world watched Apollo 11’s monumental moon landing make history, and the astronauts take their first steps across the lunar surface, few would have paid a thought to one small part of the men’s complicated space gear: their wristwatches. Few, that is, but those in the know, who would recognize that this deceptively

casual attribute of our daily wear was in fact painstakingly selected for its technological prowess. Getting the honor of being the first watch worn on the moon was the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional, worn by Apollo’s Buzz Aldrin.

sophisticated Speedmaster series – and this year’s Speedmaster Master Chronometer Chronograph Moonphase is certainly no exception. In a contrasting black-and-white image as clear as a NASA photograph, the moon itself spotlights on the timepiece’s striking blue dial; a high-resolution representation so realistic and detailed, it even shows an astronaut’s footprint. True to its name, the watch showcases moon phases more accurately than ever before, thanks to its revolutionary gear train that tracks the lunar month to an exact span of slightly over 29.5 days, rather than the 30 days it is commonly believed to last. The advanced mechanism requires no adjustment for over ten years. Executing a new standard of testing set by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, 368 components make up the innovative 9904

movement, ushering

in

an exciting new era in watchmaking technology. The dial itself is sun-brushed in a brilliant blue, punctuated with Speedmaster’s classic baton hands and balanced by symmetrical twin subdials with rhodium-plated circles. The tachymeter scale is the first in a Speedmaster to use Liquidmetal® an OMEGA-exclusive alloy used to fuse ceramics, which is three times as hard as stainless steel when cooled. Stainless steel also forms the sleek contemporary case, accented with a ceramic bezel. Complementing the dial’s vivid hues, a blue leather strap with a foldover buckle clasp completes the sophisticated space-age feel. Other color choices for the dial are also available, as well as an 18kt solid gold and steel-and-gold versions for the Speedmaster case.

A NEW SENSATION

IS MAKING WAVES IN THE CITY WITH EXQUISITE CRAFTSMANSHIP & IMPECCABLE SERVICE

ALAIR HOMES CALGARY

As one of Alair Homes’ most recent client shared so candidly; “One of my heroes, marketing legend Seth Godin, calls companies like Alair Homes Purple Cows because they create experiences that are worth sharing because they are unique and rare. (Cows beside the road are not interesting – but a purple one you would notice and tell others about) When you experience a purple cow you feel compelled to tell others. In fact, for me it is almost a duty because I am a believer and I am trying to build my company in this image.” This powerful testimony compelled us to find out more about this intriguing group of builders who’re doing things differently. With an immense level of involvement in each of their projects their highest commitment is towards their client’s end goal and satisfaction - “at the end of the project we want the client to say - lets do it again!” says Dustin Keeley of Alair Homes Calgary. It’s the complete transparency policy of Alair Homes that initially attracted Dustin to the Alair Homes Franchise. Here’s an excerpt of a conversation with Dustin Keeley.

47

A: Alair Homes is really quite an amazing company that’s revolutionizing how home builders work. Traditionally, home builders had to handle so much of the day to day administrative tasks of running a

business themselves that they were left with a fraction of their time to devote to actually building the home. This is where the Alair Homes model has made a big difference. Alair Homes looks after so much of the business administration, marketing, website etc functions that I am able to devote most of my time to building homes to the maximum satisfaction of my clients.

Q: That’s amazing. How long have you been doing this?

difference is reflected in the high satisfaction levels of all our clients.

A: We’ve been an Alair Homes builder for the past five years, but I’ve been in the home building business since my teenage years. This is second nature to me.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Q: You’re making quite an impression among Calgary new home buyers through the Alair Homes franchise model - tell us a little about it.

Q: What else sets you apart from the other builders? A: With Alair Homes, we follow a model of complete transparency and a high level of accountability. Our clients are always thoroughly informed and involved in the process of building their dream home. This level of partnership with home buyers and accountability has never existed in this industry before, and the

A: I believe that if you do your very best for your clients as you would do for yourself, you will always have plenty of success. I am not a money-driven individual, and my passion is seeing people happy. So, in 10 years, I want to be doing the same thing I’m doing now, which is to build homes with the awareness that this is the single biggest investment my clients make which will have a significant impact on their daily life for many years.

TESTIMONIAL BLOG FROM AN ALAIR HOMES CLIENT 1. They nailed the basics Being remarkable starts with consistently doing what you said you would do and nailing the bare minimum for any proud service company: on time and on budget with high quality. Alair made this part look easy even though it is not. Anyone who runs a service business knows it takes talent, processes and crazy hard work. 2. They became invested in the outcome Understanding WHAT your customer wants is part of the bare minimum. But to be remarkable you have to understand WHY the customer wants it, and that it is much harder. You have to lean in, get to know them and most of all listen. 3. They communicated – a lot

48

Your customer can’t have a remarkable experience if they don’t know what is happening. Alair knows this and has hired great communicators (Jessie the lead for our project… amazing) Through the entire project Alair was in constant contact with us. We never had to wonder about anything or nag them to get answers and we never felt surprised or confused. 4. They went the extra mile This is what separates great experiences from good ones. It is so simple yet so rare today. It does not have to be grandiose or charitable. It can be the little things, the nice touches and the thoughtful gestures. We experienced several of these and they left us feeling that we were getting the “premium package”, an elevated experience created just for us.

WITH A MODERN ARCHITECTURE ICON

BJARKE INGELS Bjarke Ingels famously said, “Architecture seems to be entrenched in two equally unfertile fronts: either naively utopian or petrifyingly pragmatic. We believe that there is a third way... A pragmatic utopian architecture.”” Born of a love for comic books and a lure of art, combined with a desire to find political and social meaning in things, the young Danish prodigy took to architecture for its ability to have a powerful impact on people’s lives. With the belief that “fictional worlds empower people with the tools to transform their own environments”, visionary Architect Bjarke Ingels has time and again demonstrated the art of turning “surreal dreams into inhabitable spaces”, creating some of the most extraordinary metamodern marvels of Architecture the world has ever seen. We were fortunate enough to snag 10 precious minutes with this modern icon of Architecture and Design.

Q: What was childhood like for you? When did you decide you wanted to be an architect?

BI: When I was a child, I wanted to become a graphic novelist – but because there wasn’t a comic book university, I enrolled at the Royal Art Academy’s Architecture School. I did this to enhance my drawing skills to eventually apply towards comic books which is where I wanted to be. But after two years of free-hand drawing and other technical classes I became exposed to architecture and got intrigued by it. Apart from Lego or cool buildings in James Bond movies, architecture was an art form that I never had any interest in. The tipping point for me was when I discovered that architecture is not just an art form, but that you can’t think about it independently from social, economic and political issues. Political science was my

There was a lot of excitement about what is possible. Q: So what continues to inspire you today?… BI: When people ask me about my inspiration or influences, I answer that life is already interesting enough. The practical challenges, the logistics of life. You don’t have to look into astrology or mysticism or any other metaphysical sources to get inspired and make interesting architecture. If you look carefully at life itself, you can make the most intricate sculptural structures that will intensify and orchestrate life, rather than that they are shaped by some external inspiration. Q: Which architect do you look up to?….who perhaps shaped your view of the world and architecture.

said… when BIG was invited to design the LEGO House, that was a dream come true for me. As I had said that if BIG had been founded with the sole purpose of realizing one single building – it would have to be this one! For me, LEGO bricks are a very simple way of explaining what it means to be an architect and it is an exciting process to be involved in its design and

The stunning design of the TEK building hides within it a mix of programs with no obvious hierarchy, including restaurants, galleries, exhibition spaces, hotel rooms, shops and more along an internal spiralling pedestrianized space, leading to the penthouse floor. The lamellas recede inwards forming a generous public staircase allowing the public to walk into the façade and all the way up to the rooftop garden.

construction. Q: How many projects are you currently working on? BI: We have a number of projects underway in New York – including our recently completed VIA 57 West, a “courtscraper” residential building with the Durst Organization, and the Eleventh, a pair of curved travertine-and-bronze condo-hotel towers rising along one of the greatest things to have happened to New York in the last decade: the High Line. And we have the BIG U, the resilience infrastructure for Lower Manhattan. The project features specialized social and environmental amenities tailored to each specific neighborhood that will also protect the city against floods and storm water. Last summer, we had entered the first phase, called the East Side Coastal Resiliency project.

Another of our current projects, the Amager Resource Center, is a waste-to-energy plant that also serves as a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen. We have the climate in Denmark but we don’t have the topography. So soon, opening this winter season, Copenhagen will get its first ski mountain. This is the essence of hedonistic sustainability—you can make the world cleaner and more fun at the same stroke! We also just opened an office in London, where we have major projects in development and a handful of others including the Battersea Power station and the competition scheme for the Museum of London, and the Serpentine Gallery that had opened last year. It seemed an obvious choice to establish ourselves in London – and it doesn’t harm that it is between our other offices in Copenhagen and New York. Q: What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on? BI: Any challenge is an opportunity. For example, the Amager Resource Center is a power plant in Copenhagen reminds us that pollution is an abundant resource that hasn’t yet found its true use. So we proposed a new breed of Waste-to-Energy plant, one that is economically, environmentally, and socially profitable. This will be the cleanest Wasteto-Energy plant in the world, and as a final effort in completely changing people’s perceptions of what a power plant can be, we thought of it as an art piece. Copenhagen has a cold climate with several months of snow, but absolutely no mountains. Copenhageners have to travel several hours by car to reach the ski slopes in Sweden. However, once ARC is completed, it is going to be possible to ski all year round. The roof is not only going to function as a ski slope, but as a real mountain with a green forest area, hiking trail, and climbing walls – all while allowing spectacular views of the city skyline. It is, to date, the closest thing we have achieved in realizing the vision of designing our cities and buildings as man-made ecosystems. Because not only does the Waste-to-Energy plant harvest local resources—rainwater, daylight, natural airflows—, it forms an urban metabolism with the city of Copenhagen, converting its waste into a rich energy reserve—a perfect example of what we call hedonistic sustainability! Q: Which of your projects has given you the most satisfaction? BI: I’m quite proud of the trilogy of mid-market, affordable mixed-use apartment projects that we’ve done in Copenhagen: the VM, The Mountain and the 8 House. When you look at the state of architecture, social housing or collective housing is a category very deprived of innovation. I think architecture has really been the domain of opera houses and art museums – but I think to inject true innovation and invent new typologies for how people live is incredibly important. Q: What is the best advise you would give to young kids today? BI: Just like in science, architecture is really like a sort of hypothetical, deductive experimentation. You don’t have to try to do all the homework; you don’t have to do all the curriculum. If you see something that you like, you try to really understand where it came from, how it got there, what were the ideas behind it. For the young architects out there I’d like to say, A. It’s important to care…and B. To realize that we’re here to build not for other architects or for ourselves but for all of humankind, and to accomodate the life and work of so many people from different backgrounds.

Be up to date with latest launches and new events and programs we will be announcing through the season. This issue we will focus on a couple of iconic brands in the table top / accessories / gift area. Stelton The Arne Jacobsen Cylinda line from 1967 remains as the heart of the design concepts from Stelton – iconic minimalist cylindrical design made of stainless steel is a classic unaffected by the passage of time. He was awarded the ID prize of 1967 by the Danish society of Industrial Design and also received the International Design Award in 1968 by the American Institute of Interior Design. Cylindak-Line 50th anniversary edition was just released — the primary factor here is the proportions —then materials —and then comes, of course, the colour – and seen all together is a very impressive look — the silhouettes are available in the newest ocean blue or powder or smokey blue versions. Complete with the creamer and sugar bowl — tea pot — french press – coffee vacuum jug — and of course the AJ cocktail shaker with Champagne cooler. Add to the subtle satin-finish enamel and you have an enduring design that will continue to stand the test of time. The Italian design duo Daniel Debiasi and Federico Sandri created the COLLAR collection with the coffee aficionados in mind. The Collar collection features a espresso maker – a coffee grinder with jar – a milk jug and a sugar bowl. The collar collection is created to rediscover the ritual and culture of coffee brewing – with a Scandinavian design aesthetic. The east meets west in the Theo collection by Francis Cayouette – the designer merges the best from the Asian culture with the Danish design — and has created a range that is graphic – yet tactile but full of contrasts. The emphasis is on daily life with a touch of industrial design and functional aspect within the design. The award winning Theo products stimulates the senses and invites you to enjoy a moment of calm with your favourite tea or coffee. Alessi Newly launched at the NYC show on the 102 floor of the new world tower — Forma by Zaha Hadid – inspired by the natural formations of pebbles eroded over time — fits comfortably in the palm of the hand. A pattern of asymmetrical holes allows for the the cheese to be grated and sprinkled unevenly and gives unique texture. Paired with the stand it creates an overall sculptural centrepiece. Playful and functional. LUXURY HOTELS & RESORTS

AN ARTISTIC

ESCAPE IN DOWNTOWN CALGARY

HOTEL ARTS WORDS :: KATE MISSINE

O

“On my way back from attending the Art Basel in Miami,” says Sam Dhand, Publisher of Luxury Living, “I was still reliving the wonder of that spectacular celebration of

art and talent.” Sam was stopping over in Calgary; but with the amazing art-filled experience fresh in his mind, it would be a pity to stay in a bland hotel room devoid of personality. Luckily, he was headed to the Hotel Arts – a charming boutique hotel right at the heart of Calgary’s hip Victoria Park neighbourhood where, true to its name, he would continue to be immersed in artistic expression. “It was apt, and reaffirmed my belief that art is an imperative part of living and it makes everything beautiful,” says Sam of his stay. Equal parts place to stay and artistic showcase, the hotel’s distinctive flair – bold, vivid, one-of-a-kind art – permeates throughout the space, imbuing a creative energy that keeps the lushly outfitted rooms from becoming just another faceless hotel chain. Right at the entrance, visitors are greeted with a show-stopping, hand-blown glass light fixture by local artist Barry Fairbarn, uplifting the room with colorful, vibrant pattern. Beyond, in the lobby, a larger-than-life painting of a horse by Bruce Pashak hangs in the lobby, an allusion to Alberta’s deep equestrian tradition. A socially significant work graces the entrance to the hotel restaurant and bar: a flag of civil rights activist Martin Luther King is depicted, surrounded by a golden halo, in the King painting by Tim Okamura. All together, the Hotel Art’s collection is a captivating, unparalleled experience that Sam calls “a veritable extravaganza, a celebration in art every direction you look.” But while it’s easy tempting to spend hours gazing at the gallery-like walls, a tired traveller needs their rest – and the tower’s 185 rooms beckon to put your head down, along with the flawless service.

62

The clean, modern yet impeccably luxe interiors, recently renovated and designed by B+H CHIL, show contemporary lines and a soothing palette of greys, whites, and charcoals – the perfect canvas backdrop for the unique artwork. After rejuvenating with a nap and in-room massage, head out to explore the grounds, where you’ll momentarily feel like you’ve just jumped a plane to the sunny shores of South Beach. De-stress with a poolside yoga class on the original art-bedecked patio, followed by a dip in the aquamarine pool shimmering with Italian Bisazza glass tile.

contemporary influences; the fresh oyster bar is a must-try. At night, the ambience is complemented with live music from Calgary musicians, curated by local artist Amy Thiessen. Next door, the Yellow Door Bistro takes a heartier direction with an inspired take on traditional bistro fare. The weekend brunch, with creations like Maple Glazed Pork Belly Hash and Duck Confit Omelet, is worth breaking a diet for.

Director of business development Fraser Abbott, who has been with the hotel from its conception, tells us about Hotel Arts’ connection with the local art community. A favoured place for all art conventions in the city, the hotel is an integral part of Calgary, he tells Sam. It’s also a short walk from some of Calgary’s best attractions, including the Scotiabank Saddledome, home of the world-famous Calgary Stampede, and the historic Stephen Avenue Walk. For a fun way to get around, funky Brooklyn Cruiser Bike are complementary – grab and pedal off to enjoy the city. www.hotelarts.ca

A BREW WITH A VIEW! SOUTH KOREA’S

WAVEON COFFEE HOUSE BY THE SEA WORDS: STEVEN JAMES :: IMAGES KIM JAEYOUN

F

Famed for its beautiful seaside setting, Gijang in South Korea is home to a stunning new landmark poised perfectly along the rocky shore of the Korea Strait. Designed by Heesoo Kwak + IDMM Architects, the Waveon Cafe was

built, just last year, to take advantage of the diverse range seaside of views the location affords, while depicting a strong relationship between the natural space and architecture.

67

Built almost entirely of concrete using enormous geometric shapes stacked high above rooflines of surrounding houses, and oriented at each level towards different aspects of the dramatic view, the structure is extraordinary as it’s unique. “Depending on where and how we see the beach, the sea shows diverse views for us,” the Architect said. Outer walls of glass that extend edge to edge and floor to ceiling emphasizes the cafe’s deep connection with the shore and the water, creating a oneness with the spectacular seaside while allowing an abundant amount of light into the space. “The outer space of this building consists of ‘Pyeongsang’ that is an outdoor furniture traditionally used for small group activities like talking and sipping a cup of tea in

68

community. Instead of setting a wide terrace in the beach, a series of Pyeongsang under pine trees plays a meaningful role as semi-individualized spaces where we can have an opportunity to enjoy meditative time with a cup of coffee surrounded by natural scenes said the Architects. Fans of contemporary concrete Architecture will want to mark this exceptional cafe on their maps for an enthralling and at the same time meditative break whilst travelling along the rugged and beautiful eastern coast of South Korea.

THE ADVENT OF

DYNAMIC

ARCHITECTURE &

LIFESTYLE

WORDS: STEVEN JAMES :: IMAGES: DAVID FISHER ARCHITECT

The buzz is all around us. It’s in the stuff we read in so many magazines and blogs, it’s in the images and videos we see of superlative architectural & scientific wonders around the world, and it’s always been there in our dreams of an advanced space-faring civilization with a dynamic and fantastic future.

T

People like Steve Jobs worked relentlessly to turn this vision into reality for the tiny gadgets we carry in our pockets everyday, and now cannot imagine living our life without. There are people like Elon Musk who are doing the same to fulfill the promise of space travel and colonization of heavenly bodies other than our blue planet, starting with the moon and mars. In the world of Architecture & Engineering, Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava, Vincent Calebaut are examples of shining stars edging us ever further into our future. To this list we may yet add another heavy weight, Architect David Fisher, who may one day come to be known as the father of the Dynamic Architecture movement. What is Dynamic Architecture, you say? Why, it’s Architecture that moves, of course! What else would it be? Imagine that at 10 in the morning you see a beautiful and shining skyscraper shaped with artistic curves from the bottom to the top. A few hours later you see the same building but the curves have all changed and looks like a tower with a ninety degree twist in it. The next morning you see

76

the same building and it looks completely different again. This is dynamic architecture and it is about to become very real in a number of prominent cities - Dubai, London, Paris, New York and Moscow. Moscow The proud capital of the world’s largest country is determined to project its might well into the future, while Russia emerges as a global economic giant. A land of intense cultural activity, Russia has also contributed enormously to the scientific and technological advancement of mankind. Moscow has finally found an innovative building up to its standards. The Moscow dynamic project will bring a 70-story rotating tower as the new landmark of the City of the Tsars, catering to the most demanding luxury requirements of property owners and Dynamic Hotel guests. New York If there is one city today who can claim the title of “Capital of the World”, that is only New York. New ideas and trends are constantly born in the City before gradually spreading to the rest of the globe. No city has more energy. No city has more might. The “city that never sleeps” will soon bring motion to its unique skyline. The rotating skyscraper New York project will welcome a Dynamic Hotel and luxury apartments, whose every room will enjoy views both on the East River and the Hudson River. Paris The world is a better place thanks to the Ville Lumière. No city embodies the spirit of the Enlightenment, as well as the pleasure of everyday life, more than Paris. Unsurpassed cultural activity has always put the city at the forefront of innovation, be it artistic, political or technological. A new revolution is about to come to Paris: A rotating tower to grace the city’s skyline, capable of living up to the city’s unique standards of sophistication. Furthermore, 120 years after the Eiffel Tower revolutionized civil engineering, the Rotating Tower will again enlighten the way towards logical Architecture: designed by engineering and paving the way to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. London The London Dynamic Project is of profound relevance to a city reclaiming its role of “Center of the World”. London has asserted its role throughout history as a beacon of civilization. As the former capital of the largest empire the world has ever seen, and as a major political, economic and cultural centre today, the influence of London on the destiny of mankind has never faltered. Now, as the city prepares to host for the third time the Summer Olympics in 2012, it wishes to bring this icon of future life to London, receiving its own rotating tower to serve as the landmark for the event, and an inspiration for generations to come. Dubai / UAE The UAE have grown at an astonishing pace over the past few years. Their leaders have inspired the region and the world by their desire to innovate, their readiness to take on the most daunting challenges, and their determination in bringing big dreams to reality.
