was first devised to enable ships’ captains to exactly determine their location at sea. Accurate knowledge of home and local time was essential to calculate the longitude with precision. Montblanc has paid tribute to the importance of early navigational timepieces by creating the new Régulateur Nautique set within the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858. The function and the design of the wristwatch offer fascinating insights into the history of navigation on the high seas. The regulator dial with a central minute hand, a separate hours subdial at 12 o’clock and another displaying the seconds is an homage to the regulator pendulum clocks that stood in harbourmasters’ offices in all of the world’s major ports. A captain’s last task before leaving port was to synchronise his ship’s chronometer with the harbourmaster’s so that the precise time on his clock could be carried for the entire voyage. Classical navigational instruments could only enable a mariner to determine his geographic
latitude between 90° North and 90° South, but not his geographic longitude. Knowing local time and time in the home port were prerequisites for calculating the precise longitude of a vessel. The dial of the new Montblanc Régulateur features eight indicators showing home and local time, day and night, a chronograph, a 30-minute counter, small seconds, and a combined power reserve and winding zone display on more than half a dozen levels, symbolically representing the theme of depths and shallows in the sea. The dial has been partly skeletonised to reveal the exquisite circular graining decoration on the movement’s plate, above which the wheels of the movement can be admired. Local time on the Régulateur Nautique is shown by means of a skeletonised hour hand inside a small hours circle at 12 o’clock, beneath which another hour hand indicates the vessel’s home time. When the wearer is in his home time zone, the skeletonised hour hand is always directly above the home time hand. In the best tradition of the Montblanc manufacture in Villeret, the wristwatch in the Régulateur set is a chronograph. The large elapsed seconds hand is at the centre of the dial and at 3 o’clock is a 30-minute counter for elapsed minutes. The chronograph mechanism has a classical column wheel with a horizontal coupling. Many parts of the chronograph are meticulously crafted and decorated by hand. The levers that operate the chronograph are delicately fashioned by hand to the nearest hundredth of a millimetre and the stopwatch functions are checked under a loupe. The edges of the steel components and Minerva’s typically v-shaped chronograph bridge are bevelled manually to enhance their visual appeal and the bridges are embellished with “Geneva waves”. The large balance wheel oscillates at the classical frequency of 18,000vph (semi-oscillations an hour) and this enables the chronograph to measure time intervals with precision to the nearest fifth of a second. The stopwatch function is activated by means of a button incorporated into the winding crown. As its partner for the production of this impressive navigational clock, Montblanc joined forces with Erwin Sattler, one of the finest manufacturers in this field. The design and construction features a blend of artistry and high quality manufacture production, with extensive finishing carried out by hand, resulting in a truly remarkable work of art.

This home is a design room for a Japanese sneaker brand as well as a residential house. The site is in Takarazuka-city of Hyogo Prfecture. It is located in an exclusive residential district that commands an entire view of the Osaka Plain. Located on a 330 meter hill, the site features a good commanding view as its key selling point. Working with a site whose slope had been leveled, the architects sought to rebuild this lost mountain into the site design, thereby increasing the angle of the slope with the two resulting mounds. Between these two mounds a living space is built, and the upper story floating on these two mounds is a design room. Taking advantage of the slope, an architecture suiting the desires of two types of people was built. A. Those who wish to be underground in the warmth of the earth. B. Those who wish to fly like a bird.
The upper floor is a design room from where one observes the Gulf of Osaka, high-rise buildings, Kobe port, Kansai Airport, Itami Airport, and shadowy blue mountains. To be warmed up: The lower floor is a house, hidden in a mountain, in the ground of the slanted site, invisible from the upper road. The bedrock layer 1.5 meters beneath the ground surface is used to support the foundation. Two mounds were built using the soil that was excavated for the lower floor, and the residence is inserted between these two mounds. Built on “a new topography-mountain�, all parts of the building are close to the earth. To fly: The upper floor is a design room from where one observes the Gulf of Osaka, high-rise buildings, Kobe port, Kansai Airport, Itami Airport, and shadowy blue mountains. The land, with two mounds built to let the slope undulate, is like mountain waves upon which the upper floor floats like a ship passing over the waves. Is it a dream of a long-distance ship going over high waves or is it a dragon? The dream of this architecture is like a voyage setting out. The Architecture was designed to allow the sea and a range of mountains 60 kilometers away to be observed from the 18 openingS that swallows the outside. Straight eaves run amidst the curvilinear forms of the topography. The eaves project in a powerful manner not to be beaten by the inherent force of the topography. To be protected by the house, yet at the same time have the feeling of flying away, making two extremes into one, is realized in the architecture in the corresponding forms of the upper and lower floors. It is a cave and also a nautical form. It is flying away, yet it is anchored. It is drifting, yet it is homely. It is sky, and it is Earth. It is far, yet it is near.
