As we step into February, a month often associated with love and connection, I find myself reflecting on the incredible sense of community shared in North Mankato. Love isn’t always just about grand and romantic gestures; it’s about the kindness we show our neighbors, the support we offer our local businesses, and how we come together to lift each other up.

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it offers us countless opportunities to celebrate what truly matters. Whether we show appreciation for a friend, volunteer for a local cause, or simply enjoy a winter stroll through our beautiful neighborhoods, every small act contributes to the warmth that defines our town.

Let’s use this time to embrace the spirit of community and love in all its forms. Share a smile with a stranger, send a note of encouragement to someone who might need it, or participate in one of the many events happening around town. Each of us has the power to make a difference; together, we can continue building a strong, compassionate community.

Wishing you all a February filled with warmth, kindness, and connection.

Priceless Indeed,

NORTH KATO’S POWERSPORTS POWERHOUSE STARR CYCLE

In North Mankato, Starr Cycle is the premiere powersports powerhouse and a haven for enthusiasts of all ages. This ten-brand dealership is more than just a retailer; it’s a community hub, a family legacy, and a trusted partner for riders seeking adventure on two or four wheels.

From motorcycles to side-by-sides, Starr Cycle has built a strong reputation over three decades as a one-stop shop for buying, selling, repairing, and trading powersports vehicles.

Starr Cycle began in 1990 when John Zender opened his first shop in Mankato. Initially renting space in the old Lakeside Harley Davidson building near Hiniker Pond, John’s focus was on service and repair. By 2004, John purchased Sherwood Motorsports and established Starr Cycle as an independent dealership, offering pre-owned units and service for motorcycles and ATVs. Over the years, John expanded the business, adding Yamaha, KTM, and Honda to the roster, followed by other leading brands such as Kawasaki, Victory Motorcycles, and CFMOTO.

After a decade of working together, John’s son, Nathan Zender, took over the business in 2018 after John’s untimely passing. Nathan brought with him a lifelong passion for motorsports and a commitment to customer service. Growing up surrounded by motorcycles and performance vehicles, Nathan has continued to build on his father’s legacy, upholding Starr Cycle’s reputation for quality.

“Growing up, we were always around it. My dad was a drag racer—he loved performance motorcycles. So, we always had bikes in our house, in our shop, in our garage, even in our living room,” Nathan shares.

Just one of Starr Cycle’s many features is its impressive inventory. With over 200 units available at any given time, the dealership offers the largest selection of pre-owned powersports vehicles in southern Minnesota.

Their multi-level showroom and outdoor display area showcase a wide variety of colorful scooters, dirt bikes, motorcycles, dual-purpose bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, and even electric bicycles. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned rider or a first-time buyer; Starr Cycle has something for everyone.

Beyond sales, Starr Cycle specializes in repairs, trades, and winter storage—an essential service during Minnesota’s colder months. Starr Cycle ensures riders have everything they need to keep their machines in top condition with a wide selection of safety gear, tires, batteries, oil filters, brake pads, and lubricants. The team can also special-order parts and accessories, making it simple to find precisely what you need.

“It’s always fun to work on other people’s toys,” says service manager Jeremy Johnson.

The heart of Starr Cycle is its dedicated team of 13 employees, many of whom have been with the business for over a decade. The service department is led by Service Manager, Jeremy Johnson, and three service technicians. Store manager Sam Miller has been with Starr Cycle for 20 years. The parts department, managed by Toni Anderson since 2011, boasts a wealth of knowledge and a passion for connecting customers with the right products.

“I love helping people get their gear and customizing their machines,” says Toni.

Nathan is most proud of Starr Cycle’s work culture. The company’s employees are all powersport enthusiasts, and the work environment is supportive and fun. The employees focus on properly educating new riders and providing exceptional customer service. Starr Cycle’s experienced sales team is equally committed to helping customers find their perfect ride. The company offers convenient financing options through local lenders like MN Valley and Southpoint Federal Credit Union.

“If you’re looking to get started, come in and sit on some bikes. Let’s talk about your aspirations. Let’s talk about your goals. Let’s get you some safety gear and connect you with the right people to get started,” says Nathan.

Starr Cycle also actively supports local organizations like the Kato Cycle Club and the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club, as well as initiatives like the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s training programs. By servicing safety bikes used in training courses across Minnesota, Starr Cycle plays a vital role in promoting safe motorcycle riding practices.

“We like to do things that connect directly with the people in southern Minnesota,” says Nathan. “It’s all about building relationships and supporting our neighbors.”

For those brand-new or curious about powersports, Starr Cycle is the perfect place to start. The team encourages customers to come on in, discuss their goals, and learn about safety gear.

“It’s empowering for kids and adults alike to gain confidence and respect for the machines they ride,” Nathan explains. “We’re here to educate and support them every step of the way.”

Starr Cycle continues to rev forward, embracing innovation and adapting to industry challenges. The dealership’s partnership 

Mika, Starr Cycle Customer Service

 with brands like UBCO, an electric motorcycle company, reflects its commitment to sustainability and electric vehicle technology. Its extensive inventory ensures customers have access to the latest models and trusted pre-owned options.

Starr Cycle remains a headquarters for powersports enthusiasts in southern Minnesota, and by combining a passion for motorsports with a dedication to quality and community, Starr Cycle is more than a dealership— it’s a destination.

Starr Cycle invites riders to explore their showroom, meet the team, and discover the many joys of powersports. Whether you’re looking for your next adventure vehicle, need expert advice, or want to connect with fellow enthusiasts, Starr Cycle is the place to be.

“We’re proud to be part of this community and to share our love for riding with others. I love the small-town feel of North Mankato. It feels like a small community. The city is so supportive of us, and there are so many nice people and great neighbors,” says Nathan. “At Starr Cycle, it’s all about the journey—and we’re here to help you every step of the way.”

GODZILLA The Origin of

At the gates of North Mankato stands a legendary figure: Godzilla— ”Kato-zilla” to tourists and North Kato denizens short on time but eager to explain. To some, he is a symbol, a mascot, perhaps even a hero. It is even said that this 500-pound, 10-foot-tall steel behemoth performs a sacred duty, protecting North Kato from being incorporated into Mankato. But where did North Mankato’s metal guardian come from?

As it turns out, Godzilla was the creation of Dale Lewis, a sculptor from Hastings, Minnesota, who has been crafting magnificent creatures of all shapes and sizes for over fifteen years. This is his story.

Jake Demers: What got you into sculpture work?

Dale Lewis: For a couple years, I was doing mosaics ‘cause I didn’t really have that welding equipment stuff for steel. And it was fun. I was making

three-dimensional mosaic statues. The largest one I made was a 6-and-a-half-foot-tall giraffe.

The problem was once people started buying them from me. Everybody wants to put them in the garden, you know, and they’re not really suitable for this climate with the freestyle weather cycle.

I thought I’d buy a welder and give the metal a try—always enjoyed welding. I started collecting materials and really started out small, you know. A little flower or bouquet of flowers made out of spoons or butter knives.

I bought the welder in 2010, and it’s just grown from there. I’m still not a welder. I’m still faking that part.

I remember I made a 10-foot-long crocodile that was the same material as Godzilla. It rolled around on the top of my Honda Civic for a year and a half, I think!

It was cool enough that I was out at a friend’s house, and the neighbor’s dogs— they had a couple of medium-sized dogs—were just freaking out. Because this crocodile has big teeth. That’s the sort of response that sticks out.

up is because I have a friend who is a retired professor. He has a collection of Godzillas, among other things, but so he had like 12 different Godzillas, all the different styles, and I just picked out the one that I thought would look the best with my materials. It was a real luxury to have a 3-D model. I’m usually working off of pictures and drawings, so this was a step up. 

 So, in 2015, the Sculpture Walk rolls around and I put him in my trailer and take him down into North Mankato. There’s something really funny about Godzilla going around a roundabout.

That was the first People’s Choice Award I ever won. Since then, I have won a handful of them around the country, but that was a big day for me.

They located Godzilla in North Mankato, and the city really stepped up. I hear they decorate him for all occasions and dress him up, and I think that’s great.

JD: Sounds like Godzilla was a real career-changer.

DL: It’s really taken off. Not just the sculptures, either. Godzilla came with a bit of fame all his own.

I was at a gas station once and the attendant recognized me—apparently her boyfriend was a big Godzilla fan. So, he rushes in and starts asking me all these questions, like “What drew you to the Imperial-style Godzilla?” and boy, did he not like my answers!

Because of him though, I heard about this whole Godzillafest thing in Chicago, so my wife and I and my professor friend and his wife took a trip down there. I spent the whole weekend handing out my business cards with Godzilla on them, and as we were coming back to the train station, they had my card right there at the kiosk!

I do other sculptures besides Godzilla, of course. I came up with the idea a couple years ago to create a large number of sculptures where there might be ten or fourteen sculptures being shipped to a place for traveling shows.

The most popular traveler show I got is what I call

but also a woolly rhino. It just spent a year at the Lewis and Clark Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

This spring in late March, the Scraposaurs, which is installed in Eau Claire right now, is going to the museum of the Shenandoah Valley out in Virginia.

JD: Is there anything you’re working on currently that you’re particularly excited about?

DL: I’m working on a woolly mammoth right now.

Just today, I got to covering the seven-foot tusk in stainless steel, so he’s pretty far along. He looks done because he’s all covered with hair.

In the Scraposaurs show, I have a woolly rhino, and what surprises me—it’s every bit as cool as the mammoth, you know, same materials, it looks woolly, and it’s cute—people think I made it up because they don’t realize it was a real thing!

I thought, ‘well, it’s so popular. I’m just gonna make a mammoth and concentrate on some of the aspects that I thought I could improve from the other one.’

JD: Any recommendations for people who can’t get enough of Godzilla?

DL: Here in Hastings, Minnesota, I got a couple of sculpture parks. One’s my yard.

My wife never really thought our yard was gonna become a destination, but it has!

I welcome people to visit and if I’m around, they can get a tour or see what I’m working on. Otherwise, they can still look around and see everything. I’ve got QR codes with the titles of most of the sculptures and a link where they can click to get more information on the sculptures.

The second is just down the road from me. Six miles north is a friend’s property that looks just like my yard. They must have 16 sculptures displayed there. They’re a retired couple that have this nice property right on the bike path and on the highway and they have really been enjoying the attention having a bunch of sculptures gets.

It’s got an official name, too—Benjamin-Lewis Sculpture Park. It’s located at the intersection of Highway 42 and Lock Blvd., Hastings.

JD: Wonderful! I might have to check it out myself.

DL: Yeah, I recommend it. You should stop in for a visit.

The Art of Heather FitzSimmons Meticulous Masterpieces

For many, the adage of ‘making a mountain out of a molehill’ can be derogatory, but that is precisely what North Mankato educator and artist Heather FitzSimmons artfully and skillfully does.

Within her art, pinhead paint drops become stunning and colorful, layered mandalas—teeny tiny seed beads become beautiful, wearable jewelry— and thin fibers become breathtaking, knitted shawls.

“I always remember my mom getting me art kits as a child. I was obsessed with putting things together. I especially loved friendship bracelets—I’ve always gravitated towards fiber arts,” says Heather.

Heather, who grew up on a farm in Good Thunder, graduated and headed to the University of Minnesota Duluth before transferring to Minnesota State University, Mankato. Initially, she wanted to be an orchestra director but quickly decided she wanted to remain ‘behind the scenes.’ Instead, she focused her energy on fiber and textile arts and painting as a major, studying under Ann Widness while also pursuing an art history minor.

“I got really into weaving, knitting, and dying my own fabrics. I feel like fiber arts connect me to women of all cultures throughout all time. It’s really about honoring a tradition and keeping that tradition alive,” says Heather.

Heather’s thesis on archetypes in Eastern and Western art helped inspire her later intricate mandala paintings, made of countless, intricate, precisely-placed painted drops.

Heather shares, “Mandalas are representative of the universe, and they can go on for infinity. It’s not just the meditative act of it; it’s the sacredness of geometry. It’s transformative.” 

 Her knack for meticulous artmaking led Heather to explore intricate beadwork in 2020. She creates extravagant, detailed, wearable creations from small seed beads. She admits it was a new hobby at the time.

“I think a lot of people are scared of art. There is a huge misconception that you should just be good at art. But, you are supposed to make mistakes. I am only good because I am brave enough to fail and get better. It takes fortitude, patience, and grit. And you have to problem solve. Artists are the greatest problem solvers,” says Heather.

Heather is currently an art teacher at Central High School in Mankato, where she has taught in many capacities since 2011. Recently, the school received grant funds from the Prairie Lake Regional Arts Council and, under Heather’s charge, created student-created sprawling murals throughout the school and restrooms, including maps, cultural patterns, and more.

Heather’s passion for teaching is apparent. Among many other topics, she is currently working with her high school students at Central High School on ‘Neurographic Art,’ which encourages students to think about a challenge, draw it, and confront it through free drawing and various editing and transforming techniques.

“It’s not just my job to teach art. It’s my job to explore many mediums and cultures of art,” says Heather.

Even though she received her master’s in teaching, she still admits that she still gets nervous on her first day of teaching—a sure sign she cares. But her passion for teaching and empowering students always takes center stage. Through the years, she has worked with all ages—ranging from daycare to adult basic education.

Currently, Heather resides in lower North Mankato with her longtime partner, Adam, and her young son, Rowen, who was named after a yarn company she admired.

Heather remains very connected with the local arts community. Upcoming, she is locally teaching a Ukrainian egg-dying class after learning the origins of the art from her grandmother, which involves many layers of wax and dye. Heather also teaches varied courses at The Mankato Makerspace.

So what is Heather currently working on?

“Right now, it’s knitting…who knows what it will be next year,” Heather chuckles.

Her art is varied, colorful, expressive, and lovely. One thing that cannot be denied is that Heather FitzSimmons can create artistic, astounding universes with teeny-tiny stars. 

Silence Is Lonely

When at first our hearing begins to fade; Though the signs are foretelling, we may choose to evade. We tell others they don’t speak clearly, they mumble a lot; My concentration is elsewhere, that’s why I ask what. Please talk a bit louder; your voice is so weak; I could hear you OK, if you would look at me as you speak. I can hear you just fine, when you’re close at hand. If you would learn to enunciate, I could understand. Being with family is one of life’s greatest joys; But, don’t expect me to hear with all of that noise. It’s easy to blame others, though it’s not really fair; It’s your hearing problem, solve it, show others you care. He who said ‘Silence is Golden’ spoke for himself only; For the hearing impaired, “Silence is Lonely”.
