The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

MIND OVER MATTER Don’t let challenges defeat you, let them define you.

hen I turned 50 over the summer, I was reminded that time waits for no one, that life is about enjoying the journey and the lessons that come along with it. When we go through challenges, we tend to exhaust our minds by questioning why things are happening to us instead of finding ways to learn from them. We don’t always realize that we are on a journey to a better outcome. Right now, we are in the middle of what I like to refer to as a “life reset.” This simply means we are in the process of strengthening our character, broadening our knowledge and skill sets and reevaluating the path we are on, pushing ourselves to take on new ventures we might otherwise not have because we were stuck on a comfortable treadmill—staying moving but going nowhere Growing up, I was forced to develop a resilience to handle difficult circumstances, to adapt to life’s trials and tribulations and to make the best of every situation by finding the silver lining. Little did I know that my childhood challenges would turn out to be my adulthood strengths, giving me the tools to handle whatever curveballs life throws at me. We are no doubt living in challenging, unprecedented times. But it’s important not to let these challenges defeat you; instead, let them define you. We must embrace this “life reset” and continue to remind ourselves to take pleasure in simpler things, such as spending time with loved ones, and to be grateful for each day we get to open our eyes. Optimistically yours,

Lynette Janac Publisher/CEO

LUXURY GUIDE

BECOME A MARKET TITLE SPONSOR Pick Your Exclusive City We are looking for strong, reputable luxury businesses that want to align their brand with ours. Becoming a market title sponsor will grant you exclusive access to a turnkey print and digital platform without the expense of producing your own publication. By promoting your products alongside our compelling editorial content, you’ll reach an engaged audience and stand out in a competitive market. What’s more, you can resell your unused pages that come with being a sponsor to complementary businesses and strategic partners, donate them to a charity close to your heart or take advantage of our “buy-back” page program.

GIVING BACK At Luxury Guide, we believe that the greatest luxury of all is the ability to give back. Many of our nonprofit partners continue to struggle to keep their programs in operation. We hope you will consider supporting them—or any other charitable cause close to your heart—in any way that you can. When you do, you will benefit as well. Helping others activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust, creating a “warm glow” effect. Other benefits include: • It is good for your health. • It gives you a sense of purpose. • It fosters a sense of community. • It unlocks your potential skills. • It’s a gateway to a new perspective. • It helps you grow. Visit our website to learn more about some of the different nonprofit organizations we support: southfloridaluxuryguide.com/charity-nonprofits.

SUPPORT LOCAL We are able to continue publishing Luxury Guide because of our advertisers. If you come across a product or service in which you are interested, please keep our clients in mind when making your final purchase decision. Your support not only helps their business but ours as well!

elcome to our annual Luxury Motors issue, where we’ve compiled a selection of the newest and most anticipated luxury and exotic vehicles currently shaking up the automotive industry (page 37). From million-dollar-plus limited editions (like the Lamborghini Sián Roadster that graces our cover) to fully electric SUVs and supercars, these moving masterpieces are worthy of your deepest admiration. And because four-wheel transportation isn’t the only way of getting around in South Florida, we also present a sampling of the latest luxury yachts to find their sea legs (page 50), including the impressive Sirena 88 and a Tecnomar speedboat with Lamborghini DNA. During these unprecedented times, it’s important to remember that happiness isn’t about the “stuff” you have, but the memories you share. We know you’re eager to get back to making those memories—even if it means loading up that new car and taking an extended road trip to get there. For our Destinations by Land feature (page 88), we showcase some charming Southern locales within reasonable driving distance of South Florida. When you feel comfortable traveling farther, you’ll want to check out our Destinations by Air feature (page 92), which highlights some of the world’s most luxurious locations and the private accommodations available there. If you’re still unsure about traveling, there are plenty of ways to keep busy right here at home while supporting local businesses. Visit our Happenings section (page 28) for things to do around town. You can also go to our website for more up-to-date events and activities: southfloridaluxuryguide.com/happenings. On a personal note: In Judaism, we will celebrate Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) starting Sept. 18 at sundown. It’s a time to reflect on the past year, to ask for and grant forgiveness and to look for ways to better ourselves in the year to come. No matter your faith, we should all try to live the next few months as if we have entered a new year. Let’s not wait until Jan. 1 to make resolutions, to find more compassion, empathy and understanding toward the people around us. I think you’ll find that kindness is contagious—and that’s the type of viral transmission we like to see! Have a safe and healthy fall season.

Swedish automaker Koenigsegg’s idea of an environmentally friendly family car is, fair to say, a wild departure from the norm. Best of all, the plug-in hybrid engine can be driven for up to 31 miles on battery power alone, meaning that most errands around town can be performed without using a single drop of gasoline. It’s unprecedented to give a seven-passenger SUV 710 horsepower to flex on proper sports cars, but who are we to argue with Dodge’s power-loving engineers? Going into production for one year only, the 2021 Durango Hellcat follows in the footsteps of American icons like the Jeep Trackhawk and Dodge Demon. Designed for those who work or relax in the great outdoors, both models boast off-road-friendly features like raised suspensions, heavy-duty components and all-terrain tires to make life easier despite the elements. A gargantuan 750 horsepower and 11,000-pound towing capacity are just the cherries on top. Rimac is making serious waves with its newest development, the still codenamed C_Two. Promising an estimated driving range of 400 miles on a single charge from its 120 kWh H-shaped batteries, the Croatian hypercar will be the role model for many other automakers to follow in terms of electrified drivetrains. Touting sustainability and ultra-high performance, it explains why even Porsche has invested heavily in the revolutionary company. LUCID AIR

Silicon Valley startup Lucid Motors is coming to South Florida this fall with a 4,000-square-foot showroom at Brickell City Centre and another 4,500-square-foot studio in West Palm Beach’s Rosemary Square. The showrooms, along with 20 others around the country, will follow the direct-to-consumer sales model initially pioneered by Tesla. The aspiring electric car manufacturer aims to bring its revolutionized standards on sustainable luxury transportation to the mainstream with the Lucid Air. Inspired by an executive jet, the Air offers optional rear seating with 55 degrees of recline, preparing riders for a promising future of fully autonomous vehicles. We may not know much about General Motors’ revival of the Hummer brand, only that it will return to life under its GMC family of luxury trucks and SUVs in 2021. The fuel-thirsty SUV once adored by personalities ranging from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Andre Agassi and Don King will oddly make a comeback as a fully electric vehicle. Its original May debut was stymied by the coronavirus pandemic, but once launched, it will be available for purchase in SUV or pickup truck guise. Ask the Expert

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS:

CRIMINAL TAX INVESTIGATIONS Miami-based board-certified criminal tax attorney David M. Garvin, P.A. shares his expertise about criminal tax investigations and what steps to take if you become the target of one. Tell us about your background. What made you become a criminal tax attorney? I am originally from Pittsburgh. I went to the University of Miami as an undergraduate, concentrating in accounting. I became a CPA before deciding to attend UM’s law school, where I received a J.D. and, later, an LLM in taxation. During my last year of law school, I was fortunate to have been a law clerk for Philip T. Weinstein, a renowned criminal tax lawyer. I always wanted to try significant trials; working in federal court in criminal tax and economic crime cases enables me to do that. How are you different from a “regular” criminal attorney or tax attorney? There are many good criminal lawyers who concentrate on federal cases but only a few who also concentrate on federal tax matters. During a criminal tax trial, the government has IRS agents and other tax experts testify. A lawyer who does not have a great deal of knowledge of tax laws will be at a disadvantage. This problem is not resolved by associating a tax lawyer because only one lawyer can examine a witness at one time. Furthermore, most tax lawyers concentrate their practices on civil tax issues. They do not have heavy jury trial experience because tax court cases do not have juries. What types of criminal income tax investigations are there? There are generally two types of criminal tax investigations: IRS administrative investigations, conducted by IRS agents and tried by Department of Justice tax division lawyers, focus only on tax crimes. Grand jury investigations, conducted by the local U.S. attorney’s office, may include several crimes, including tax violations. How do criminal tax investigations work? Generally, two special agents are assigned to conduct the investigation. They gather data and interview witnesses. This may take several years. Ultimately, they will write a report requesting authority from the DOJ to proceed to charge the taxpayer. 58

LUXURY GUIDE

What’s the first thing I should do if I believe I am the target of an investigation? Retain an experienced criminal tax lawyer. As a taxpayer, it is important that you do your due diligence. You have an absolute right to ask any lawyer you are considering the names, case numbers and outcomes of their last 10 criminal tax cases. Keep in mind, most lawyers have never had a criminal tax trial while they were representing the taxpayer defendant. If IRS agents arrive at my business, should I speak with them to show I have nothing to hide? IRS agents have already researched the person they are requesting to interview and will intentionally not give advance notice. You should not agree to be interviewed without a few days to think it over and to have your lawyer present. Politely decline, get their business cards, and tell them your lawyer will call them. Should I amend my tax returns to correct perceived errors? Once you are notified that you are a target of a criminal tax investigation, the government will argue that any returns filed late or amended are untimely, not voluntary, irrelevant and inadmissible. An amended tax return may also be argued to be an admission of guilt. Will hiring a well-known tax attorney cause the IRS to assume I must be guilty? IRS agents have already formed their opinions when they identify the target of their investigation. Retaining the best criminal tax lawyer available with a proven jury trial track record shows that you are serious about your liberty and your innocence. Having a boardcertified attorney may also give the DOJ pause before authorizing a borderline case for prosecution. What happens to me if I am wrongfully convicted? You will have the right to file an appeal. However, in many cases, the court will order the taxpayer to commence his sentence while the appeal is pending.

DAVID M. GARVIN, P.A.

Board-Certified Criminal Tax Attorney For more than 35 years, David M. Garvin has represented and successfully defended clients in federal criminal and tax matters throughout the United States. His practice concentrates on white-collar crime and tax fraud defense, including tax evasion. Garvin’s extensive trial experience, as well as his financial and accounting background, afford him a distinct advantage in litigating for and defending his clients. His trial successes speak for themselves.

ACCREDITATIONS Board Certified by The Florida Bar Certified Public Accountant in Florida

WHAT IS BOARD-CERTIFIED? Only 4.7% of attorneys in the state of Florida are board-certified. These individuals are tested and vetted by The Florida Bar before they can call themselves experts in their field. To remain board-certified, each attorney must apply and be approved for recertification every five years.

oland-born Ania Nozewnik-Agárdy, principal designer of Miami-based A-part Designs, has lived in L.A., Uruguay, Argentina, Miami and, most recently, the Bahamas. “We fell in love with the simplicity of island life and the Bahamian people,” she says. With an impressive career that includes serving as assistant dean at the University of Miami School of Business, Agárdy discovered her passion for design while staging showrooms at a luxury residential development in Uruguay. She officially launched her design career in 2008, and in 2014, she opened A-part Designs, which offers a complete range of interior design services. Agárdy draws much of her design inspiration from her travels. “I enjoy the thrill of exploration and discovery,” she says. Describe your design aesthetic. Our designs are timeless in their simplicity yet sophisticated in their elegance, creating a harmonious living environment that blends the interior flow of the space with exterior elements. What sets your work apart? A space that does not reflect the spirit of its occupants tends to feel more like a showroom than a home. I work closely with my clients and aspire to create interiors that are uniquely tailored to their personality and lifestyle. That can often be achieved with curated art, family heirlooms, memorabilia collections or other personal pieces.

TRENDING REAL ESTATE BROUGHT TO YOU BY...

MiamiRealtors.com | SFMarketIntel.com

NO SLOWING DOWN Nothing—not even a global pandemic—seems to be able to slow down South Florida’s booming real estate market. We spoke with three of the region’s top real estate experts about the current state of the market and their predictions for the future.

MIAMI

How would you characterize the current state of Miami real estate? The market is very strong—stronger than before COVID and stronger than a year ago. There is increased activity in almost all price ranges, and new pending sales (the best indicator of future closed sales) are surging. Has the pandemic had a noticeable effect on Miami real estate? It seems that we are DWUKGT PQY VJCP YG YGTG FWTKPI VJG ƂTUV VYQ months of the year! The most desired homes are in residential areas with updated or new construction that have spacious private yards and amenities. What have been some trends in the luxury market over the last six months? Pending sales for properties $1 million and above increased 70% from March to June 2020 and 46% compared to June 2019. Meanwhile, supply of luxury properties is declining: From the peak in May (45.5 months) to June 2020 (37.4 months), supply decreased 17.8%. There are still buying opportunities in the sweet spots of $2 million to $5 million, where supply for single-family homes dropped from 65 months in April to 17.8 months at the end of June. The median sale price increased by more than 13% to $3.5 million. The most notable trend is the uptick in sales of uber-luxury homes (over $10 78

million). The condo market has been a little softer, probably due to the desire for social distancing. What are your predictions for the next six to 12 months? When sellers get more comfortable with the new ways we are showing and selling homes, I foresee an increase in inventory, which will meet the increased demand. More inventory will also DTKPI UQOG DGPGĆ‚EKCN RTKEG CFLWUVOGPVU Are you seeing a difference in local vs. out-of-state buyers? There is a desire from out-of-state buyers to get out of dense cities. What’s a common mistake buyers/sellers make? The biggest mistake sellers make is overestimating the value of their homes and not reacting to the teachings of the market. Buyers need to look and react quickly. Several buyers interested in my listings came in too late.

Christopher Zoller, a broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services EWM Realty since 1990, specializes in custom luxury properties for commercial and residential clients. He is also director of the National, Florida and Miami Associations of Realtors and is active in Coral Gables Citizen Advisory Boards.

BROWARD

Jonathan Keith is a 20-year real estate veteran and principal of Fort Lauderdale’s Team JK, which specializes in luxury waterfront residences. He was named one of the Top 100 Realtors in Florida and recognized by the Miami Association of Realtors in 2014 and 2016 with the Broward County Champion Award. He also served as the organization’s 2019 Broward president. How would you characterize the current state of Broward real estate? Like most of South Florida, Broward is performing robustly. Before COVID, the market was already strong, reflecting high demand and limited supply. Following a brief interruption, the market has come back even stronger. Pending sales are surging, and supply is declining further. Has the pandemic had a noticeable effect on Broward real estate? While there have been changes in the way we do business, the biggest change is the increased activity. Despite stayat-home orders, sales in March 2020 surpassed March 2019. Realtors kept serving clients while transitioning to remote operations and leveraging virtual resources. What have been some trends in the luxury market over the last six months? Broward’s luxury market has seen increased interest over the last few years, particularly for singlefamily homes and waterfront properties. The pandemic has further accelerated this trend. Pending luxury sales in June 2020 spiked 67.2% compared to June 2019 and were 210%

higher than when they bottomed in April. Closed luxury sales increased 21.3% in June compared to a year earlier and 47% compared to April of this year. Closed sales began to rise month-over-month in May and are on course to surpass activity in 2019. While demand is increasing, inventory is mostly declining. In June 2020, active luxury inventory declined 12.3% compared to June 2019. What are your predictions for the next six to 12 months? Limited supply and increased demand will continue to drive price appreciation in the luxury segment. Low interest rates and demand from high earners in high-tax, highdensity areas will continue to drive demand. Are you seeing a difference in local vs. out-ofstate buyers? The market was already attracting affluent buyers from New York and other taxburdened areas. The ability to work remotely is further prompting these buyers to take advantage of our competitive luxury market, moderate weather and enviable lifestyle. What are some popular neighborhoods right now? Plantation and Coral Springs are two hot

PALM BEACH David Abernathy is the business manager at Waterfront Properties, the leading purveyor of luxury real estate in northern Palm Beach and Martin counties. He is also the Miami Association of Realtors’ 2020 Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound president and is frequently sought out as a source for Palm Beach County real estate market statistics. How would you characterize the current state of Palm Beach real estate? We have been experiencing a very strong luxury market since mid-April. The $5 million-plus markets in Palm Beach Island, Jupiter and Jupiter Island are all up over 50% compared to 2019, and sales for the $1 million-plus markets are back to being stronger than 2019. Has the pandemic had a noticeable effect on Palm Beach real estate? 2020 started strong both in the number of transactions and sales prices. By mid-March, the market slowed to where the number of properties under contract was less than 50% of 2019. Fortunately, by mid-April, the market was gaining traction, and by mid-May, the number of transactions was exceeding 2019 sales. June was a record-setting month, but in July, it started to slow again, possibly due to an increase in COVID cases. What have been some trends in the luxury market over the last six months? Perhaps the most apparent trend is the difference in how

the single-family-home market has recovered vs. the condo market. During the lockdown, condo associations were quick to implement measures restricting showings. This led the condo market to be more negativity impacted. What are your predictions for the next six to 12 months? My best guess is that Palm Beach County’s real estate market will stay on a steady path through the election in November.

markets where buyers can get larger homes with luxurious amenities at affordable prices. Tips for buyers/sellers? Work with a Realtor who can access resources to analyze property details, including comparable closed sales, market metrics and supply vs. demand. What’s a common mistake buyers/sellers make? It’s important for buyers to have extensive inspections, including pipes, pools and sea walls. Are you seeing a difference in local vs. outof-state buyers? In the early days of COVID, many seasonal visitors from the Northeast extended their stays. By late April and May, many renters turned into buyers and seasonal residents purchased larger properties to stay in Florida year-round.

Tips for buyers/sellers? Uncertainty creates big opportunities for buyers. If a property owner is thinking of selling, we encourage them to take advantage of our strong market.

What are some popular neighborhoods right now? Since there is a limited number of waterfront homes and condos, these property values tend to increase in good markets and retain value better in down periods. Palm Beach Island, Admirals Cove and Jupiter Island provide low density with a strong luxury lifestyle.

What’s a common mistake buyers/sellers make? People often make assumptions about our market based on what they hear in the news. In the early days of COVID, Northeast buyers assumed prices were falling in our area because of what was happening where they live. This wasn’t the case for most of Palm Beach County.

TRENDING BEAUTY

Ask the Expert

LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS?

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Bertha Baum shares her expertise on professional and at-home solutions for treating wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, hair loss and more. What are currently some of the top trends in anti-aging treatments?

FACE: Collagen boosters and biostimulation

(such as Sculptra and Radiesse) are very popular right now. There are also a lot of chin and jawline treatments for the right patient, as well as mid-face restoration with Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft.

EYES: Under-eye volume treatments (such as Belotero Balance and Restylane Silk) and Botox, can help this area.

NECK: Biostimulation and tightening lasers are definitely a trend at the moment.

HANDS: Restylane Lyft (filler) is used to make the hands look younger and show fewer veins and tendons. Needleless to say, I am not a fan of invasive procedures. What can I do to look younger without using needles?

FACE: There are many noninvasive treatments available, including microneedling and PRP (platelet-rich plasma).

EYES: Aquagold Fine Touch is a microinfusion

treatment with tiny 24-karat needles that are 2 mm deep that we use around the eyes. It’s a personalized cocktail of hyaluronic acid, Botox and vitamins, as well as tranexamic acid and PRP. It’s great for superficial lines, and sometimes we combine it with a resurfacing laser.

NECK: Radiofrequency with microneedling can tighten the skin and give a more youthful-looking neck.

HANDS: I recommend in-office peelings, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser treatments for brown spots.

ANTI-AGING 94

LUXURY GUIDE

I have scars from past acne. What can you do to get rid of them? Scars are a common problem, and we perform many different procedures to treat them. A combination treatment is best, depending on the type of scars you have. I use Bellafill, which is a collagen filler PMMA that lasts about two years, combined with microneedling, laser resurfacing (CO2 or Pixel Erbium) and other lasers such as Infini (microneedling and radiofrequency) if needed. Sometimes we will combine with TCA CROSS treatments and subcision. Certain fillers such as hyaluronic acid are sometimes used as well. How can I fight and/or remove stretch marks? Stretch marks are tough and they are hard to prevent. Bio-Oil is a great product that you can buy over the counter at your local pharmacy. The use of lasers, microneedling and PRP are also excellent for treatment. We also offer topical treatments with retinol agents. What are some top trends for treating hair loss? We have been using PRP, which helps with hair regrowth and thickening. I also recommend taking vitamins from either Forti 5 (my personal favorite) or Nutrafol. The Capillus laser-therapy cap is also a popular trend right now that you can buy and use at home daily. What do you recommend for treating nails? There is still a lot to be developed in this category, but I am seeing nail lacquers from brands such as Elon, Nuvail and Genadur that are formulated to strengthen the nail. Also, supplements that have biotin and other amino acids are great for the nails.
