all is already upon us, yet it seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year! I remember as a child, a class seemed like a neverending hour. I would look up at the clock with such confidence that it was almost time for the bell to ring, only to be disappointed that the hand on the clock barely even moved from the last moment I glanced at it. And at the time, when the adults would say, “wait until you get older, time will pass you by…”, I never quite understood what they meant, until now. Many days I look at the clock, wishing I could turn it back, desperately in need of gaining back a few hours to get my task list done. I know technology has made us more efficient in many ways, but for me, all it did was make me more efficient at putting more on my plate, including this summer, which means I didn’t get to explore some of the amazing destinations we talked about in our summer travel edition (but I sure hope you did!). While I didn’t get to travel this summer, I did have the opportunity to explore South Florida while driving the sexy orange McLaren GT for a week. McLaren is as popular as ever, producing supercars that push the bounds of speed and exclusivity and I got to experience it firsthand. Truth be told, I am by no means the car expert, so I enlisted my friend Jonathan Krutchik (a performance car aficionado and a McLaren owner) to give me his take on the car as it compares to the many other exotic cars he’s driven in his lifetime, including Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche, and this is what he had to say. “In my opinion, nothing compares to the blistering performance of a McLaren. Plus, the car sports a gorgeous, exotic design, both interior and exterior, cool features like the dihedral doors and active aerodynamics and comfort features like 360º surround view, soft close doors - they basically thought of everything, especially with the 720S. And most importantly you will get a hypercar performance at a supercar price point.”

hat do magazines mean to you?

For me, magazines are an escape. I remember the excitement of my favorite magazines arriving in the mail and poring over the photography, stories and ads. Even as we’re immersed in the digital age, there’s something special about losing yourself in a hard copy of a glossy.

And now, what we could all use more than ever is an escape. The last 18 months have been a series of “unprecedented times” with tragedy striking all over the country, including on a local level. South Florida was rocked by the collapse of the Champlain Towers in Surfside back in June, and as big as Miami can feel sometimes, it’s amazing how many of us were connected to such a tragedy. The team at Luxury Guide USA was just as heartbroken as the rest of our community, and we mourn with those whose lives have been upended by the collapse. I hope as you ﬂip through this issue that it serves as an escape for you from all the adversity we’ve witnessed in the past year-plus. It’s our special cars and yachts issue, and the pages are jam-packed with sexy roadsters and elegant vessels, starting on page 35. Getting in the cockpit of a car or the helm of a boat is an escape of its own, and trust me when I say our in-the-know writers picked some good ones for you all. As traveling becomes a little bit easier, we’ve highlighted amazing destinations near and far for the fall season (page 59). And who doesn’t love some retail therapy? Our shop pages (page 104) have some great ideas, from fashion and accessories to home design and toys for the little ones. The Underline’s ﬁrst permanent public art installation, Water/Tables by Cara Despain, allows passersby to play a game of pingpong on two tables that also feature a central drain that is both a ball return and makeshift ﬂood mitigation system. What remains constant throughout your body of work? Whatever the project, KDI is dedicated to elegant, graceful and timeless luxury. We stick to clean lines and an understated aesthetic—there is ﬁneness and sumptuousness in restraint. Our aim is to give every project its own distinct pedigree. What’s your stance regarding trends? We often dismiss the latest rages that sweep the international furniture markets, rather, we focus on the tenure of our design concepts. We create with longevity in mind. With such a diversity of projects, do you have a favorite category? Among residential, commercial and yacht design, each has its own speciﬁc requirements and demands—for example, selecting fabrics appropriate for residential or commercial use as the scenario dictates or making size and scale adjustments as needed for a yacht. Each project is uniquely demanding and we enjoy every task and challenge. We have no favorites! In what way can designing a private residence be compared to designing a yacht? Space planning—which is one of our specialties— is always of great importance… regardless of whether the project is a home, a small or large yacht, or a suite in a posh hotel.

What are some of your go-to furniture and décor stores/ showrooms? In Florida, we work with many wonderful, specialized dealers, including Jerry Pair, J Nelson, Stark carpets and Anima Domus. In London, we adore Tim Gosling, a talented custom furniture maker. And in Germany, our appreciation of the Art Deco inﬂuence takes us to Cygal. What do you ﬁnd most gratifying about the work you do? There is nothing that means more to us than the long-standing relationships we’ve built, and the fact that so many of our client relationships have evolved into meaningful, enduring friendships. 70

How do you determine your color palettes? This largely depends on the location of the project. The colors we employ for a project in an urban setting such as London or New York might contrast with the ones selected for a sun-ﬁlled environment in Florida. Similarly, the tones used for a country club’s decor are likely to differ from those meant to evoke a “vacation feel” on a cruise ship.

“Homes are going under contract as soon as they are listed; the median time to contract in June was an astonishing 11 days,” says Karen Johnson, president of Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors. For international buyers, Florida has been in the top spot for over a decade, and nearly half of buyers focus speciﬁcally on the Miami metro area. In South Florida, in 2020, 70% went to Miami-Dade, 26% to Broward and 2% to Palm Beach. And out-of-state buyers also have their sights set on Florida, surpassing even California, New York and Texas. Residents from those states are the ones packing their bags and heading to South Florida—according to the MIAMI Association of Realtors (MIAMI), 52% of out-of-state buyers in South Florida are coming from New York,

California, New Jersey and Texas. There’s a number of reasons that South Florida has been a coveted market: no income tax, record-low mortgage rates and pro-business policies. Plus, with a shift to remote work, buyers have greater control over where they can and want to live—data from Orbital Insight says that South Florida was the fourth most popular relocation destination during the pandemic. “With global vaccinations rising and unstable political situations around the world, we are seeing an increase in foreign homebuyers purchasing in South Florida,” says Jennifer Wollmann, the 2021 MIAMI Association of Realtors (MIAMI) chairman of the board. “Global buyers purchase in Miami because we are a world-class global city with better real estate prices than other similar global cities.” With a high demand and low inventory, that’s good news for local Realtors and home sellers.

Inside the Brain: Advancing Care for Tumors S

ome 85,000 Americans will be diagnosed with a brain or spinal tumor this year, according to the National Brain Tumor Society. While about onethird of those will be life-threatening, even those that aren’t can cause pain, disability and poor quality of life. Enter the experts at Baptist Health’s Miami Neuroscience Institute. With an arsenal of innovative treatments and equipment at their fingertips — working closely with their colleagues at Miami Cancer Institute — they provide the most sophisticated and tailored care. “It’s important to have both skilled, Fellowship-trained surgeons and other subspecialists along with the latest technologies to ensure that we are giving patients personalized options that are best for them,” says neurosurgeon Michael McDermott, M.D., chair of neurosurgery and chief medical executive of Miami Neuroscience Institute. Not all brain and spinal cord tumors require surgery or are cancerous, Dr. McDermott says. If a tumor is slow growing and not causing symptoms, physicians may opt for imaging studies to monitor changes. And providing a sophisticated multidisciplinary approach means that there are usually numerous treatment options. Physicians may employ minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to reach tumors by going through the nose. They may attack the tumor with radiation or chemotherapy. They may cut off a tumor’s blood supply by blocking a blood vessel. Or, they may use any combination of techniques and methods. About 60 percent of patients have no symptoms, discovering they have a brain tumor when an imaging study is done for another reason. Those who do have symptoms may experience headaches, nausea, vision or hearing problems, seizures or balance issues, depending upon the tumor’s size and location. “One headache doesn’t mean you have a brain tumor,” Dr. McDermott says. “A headache that continues for days with

no relief from medications that normally help, or a headache in combination with nausea, vomiting or other symptoms should be checked out.” A headache that improves with vomiting could also be a sign of something serious. The Institute sees patients with all types of brain and spinal tumors, including primary brain tumors, metastatic tumors that have come from cancer in other parts of the body, gliomas, skull base tumors, ependymomas, cerebellar tumors, pituitary tumors, meningiomas and more. The most common type of brain tumor in adults over age 35 is a meningioma. It grows in the layers of tissue called the meninges that cover the brain and spinal cord. Usually, they are noncancerous, but they may recur after being removed. Dr. McDermott is considered the world’s number-one expert on meningiomas from 2010 to present by Expertscape, a physician-based organization that ranks physicians based on their impact on clinical research in their field. He has also received awards from several international medical societies for his research on tuberculum meningiomas and for his development of a grading scale that allows for standardized evaluation of a tumor and helps guide surgical decisions. Treatment options are always discussed, and decisions made, jointly with the patient, Dr. McDermott says. “It’s their body, not ours.
