The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

LOVE & HOPE MUST PREVAIL W

hen 2020 started, I never thought we would be faced with the challenges we were given (even I, an eternal optimist, found things somewhat unbearable at times). Yet, each morning, I woke up and started a new day with a new attitude, as I genuinely believe that with faith, love, hope and perseverance, we can all determine our own destinies. I invite you to join me in my lifelong resolutions: to look at the past for lessons; to persevere into the future with hope, optimism and commitment to keep on keeping on; and to look at our present as the gift that it truly is. I am aware that remaining positive can be challenging for some people, depending on their circumstances. However, I firmly believe we can all share a common ability to be kind, spread love, continue to pay positive actions forward and give back to those in need. In doing so, I assure you that you will find yourself living a happier and more fulfilled life—and happiness is a natural endorphin that will help you conquer tough times.

For this issue, I also decided to implement a new way of giving back: the HeART of Giving Back initiative. I am very grateful to those who stepped up to support the cause! Supporters were able to get involved in one of two ways: buying a heart to be published in this issue or sponsoring an artist to be featured in our Reader’s Choice section. Proceeds from both programs were donated to Artist Relief, a nonprofit that is supporting artists during the COVID-19 crisis (visit page 47 to learn more). If you are a charity interested in being the beneficiary of our upcoming “Spread the Love” giving back initiative (launching Spring 2021), or you are an artist who would like to learn more about our HeART of Giving Back Reader’s Choice program, contact me at Lynette@LuxuryGuideUSA.com. Happy Holidays and Spread Love,

Lynette Janac Publisher/CEO

It is with this sentiment that we selected art photographer David Drebin’s “Love Is in the Air” as our front cover image. It is not only a beautiful work of art, but it is also in keeping with the broader themes of this issue: giving back, love, hope, unity and optimism.

I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! My goal is to provide a concise, easy-to-read resource guide that curates the latest and greatest in shopping, lifestyle and entertainment. Please let me know if there is a topic of which you would like to see or read more. I welcome your thoughts and comments!

T

o say that 2020 has been a whirlwind is an understatement. But we made it through, and, hopefully, we are coming out on the other side stronger and more in tune with the things that are really important in life.

Typically, wintertime in South Florida means a season filled with our favorite events, from Miami Art Week to festive holiday happenings. Understandably, this year is going to look a little different, but we aren’t letting that get us down, and we’ve worked diligently to fill this issue with impressive art, dazzling holiday gifts and plenty of cheer. In fact, we combined our love of the arts and holiday spirit to support artists in need with our new HeART of Giving Back initiative. Turn to page 47 to learn more about this program and how we are giving back. Even though Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Miami and the majority of the big-tent fairs won’t be descending on our city this December, many of them are hosting virtual editions with a slew of creative and interactive digital programming. And, for those of us who are craving to get back to “normal,” not everything is online; there are more than enough art events, museum exhibitions, gallery showcases and more for you to get your art fix this winter—and beyond. For more details, check out our comprehensive guide to South Florida’s art scene on page 53. After all, art always prevails! Speaking of getting back to “normal,” our Winter edition wouldn’t be complete without our annual Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide (page 113). From splurge-worthy, one-of-a-kind items to some more affordable options, our roundup of gift ideas will hopefully help you put a smile on that special someone’s face. Because let’s face it: We can all use a little extra cheer this year. From all of us at Luxury Guide, may the spirit of the season be upon you. We wish you a safe and happy holiday and a wonderful new year. I think we will all be glad to bid 2020 adieu and ring in 2021!

SPONSOR’S NOTE

ENJOY YOUR COMPLIMENTARY ISSUE OF LUXURY GUIDE, THANKS TO JETASAP!

FIRST-EVER FREE SELF-SERVICE JET CHARTER BOOKING APP NO COMMISSIONS NO MEMBERSHIPS NO FEES–EVER Though there are many choices when it comes to flying privately, including memberships, jet cards and online and offline commissionbased services, flyers looking to directly source and book private jet travel have had no free alternative that aggregates live charter options on demand. However, that recently changed when JetASAP announced the launch of the first-ever self-service charter booking app for Apple iOS, with Android coming soon.

H

ello, Luxury Guide readers! My name is Lisa Kiefer Sayer, founder and CEO of JetASAP. It brings me great pleasure to be able to send you this complimentary copy of Luxury Guide’s Winter 2020-21 edition to enjoy in the comfort, convenience and safety of your own home. I am also excited to have this platform to share my story and my new app, JetASAP, the first-ever self-service jet charter booking app that offers travelers 100% transparency and control of their travel. After spending 21 years in the private jet charter industry, I knew there had to be a way to give consumers who wanted to take charge of their private travel needs an easy and free means of doing so. For the past 18 months, the JetASAP team has been diligently constructing a mobile app that connects flyers to over 700 charter operators every time they fly, while also automatically providing safety audit information from companies such as Argus and Wyvern. If you fly privately or know someone who does, I encourage you to visit our website, jetasap.com, to learn more. Here, you will be able to request a one-time invite code needed to access the app for the first time. Rest assured: This is something completely new, and the best part is that there truly are no fees, memberships or other hidden costs. I am not only a sponsor of Luxury Guide but also a longtime fan. I think it’s an incredible resource for valuable, interesting and comprehensive content covering multiple industries in an abbreviated way—just enough details to keep me informed while concise enough to keep my attention page by page. Whether you’re looking for something to do, places to travel, the latest trend in luxury goods and services, or to learn about new businesses, such as mine, Luxury Guide is a great resource! Happy reading! Blue Skies,

Unlike other digital platforms that provide immediate trip estimates, JetASAP has taken a different approach and built a service that sends each charter request directly to over 700 operators who typically respond with live bookable quotes within minutes. More importantly, because the service is completely transparent, flyers know immediately the details of each operator submitting a quote and can even contact them directly on demand via the app’s built-in chat feature. To help keep flyers safe, JetASAP has also integrated safety rating information via direct automated connections to both Argus and Wyvern, the industry’s two primary safety auditing companies. Flyers are able to evaluate each quote, as well as the operator that provided it, and then book directly in the app when ready. JetASAP has integrated a digital signature platform that allows flyers to view and sign charter operators’ contracts right on their phone or on their computer if they prefer. Either way, all trip details, including passenger information, itineraries and changes, are handled directly through the app to keep everything easily accessible. Though the service provides tremendous value by offering flyers complete control over the entire booking process, the best feature by far is the price. JetASAP is entirely free for flyers to use, with no membership fees, commissions or other charges of any kind. Combined with its powerful ability to directly connect flyers with operators (with nobody in the middle), JetASAP is the only private jet travel app you’ll ever need. For more information and to request an invite code, visit jetasap.com.

When the pandemic temporarily closed his various restaurant locations, Matthew Kuscher (the “Kush” of Kush Hospitality) saw an opportunity to restore Stephen’s Delicatessen, Miami’s oldest deli, by infusing it with a new strain of the successful Kush brand. “At Kush by Stephen’s, we unite traditional Latin flavors with Jewish deli classics— our Goy-ish croquetas embody that,” says Executive Chef Leo Osorio. “We decided to marry all the ingredients found in the king of all deli sandwiches, the Reuben, and prepare it in croqueta form to create a unique bite that is flavorful and representative of both cultures.”

Miami Beach’s Amare Ristorante is known for its authentically prepared Southern Italian fare served in a glamorous setting reminiscent of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. “Our orecchiette Pugliesi is quite possibly the most iconic recipe from the Puglia region and is often served at holiday gatherings,” says owner Gino Iovino. “The broccoli rabe almost melts together with the pasta. This is a result of the old Pugliese technique of boiling pasta and vegetables together and then sautéing them in garlic, oil and anchovies. At MED by Marble & Rye, a modern take on a traditional Jewish deli, you’ll find the potato pancakes topped with pastrami or corned beef and drizzled with mustard and sauerkraut. There’s also s’mores latkes with chocolate graham crackers and marshmallows, and a jelly doughnut version with grape jelly and powdered sugar. yachting from your own dock, we are ready to provide new ideas for your interior design and layout,” Bates adds. In fact, the team at Innovative Creation is already hard at work implementing new features such as private his-and-hers home offices, home fitness studios, larger living and family rooms that incorporate multiple seating and gathering areas, and more expansive outdoor spaces for dining and leisure. They are equipped to guide you step-by-step to your perfect design needs, whether it’s an addition, a remodel or new construction, and are prepared and excited to suggest fresh ideas for existing and future luxury clientele. Always the picture of positivity, Bates’ outlook is optimistic: “A crisis brings awareness, and that awareness paves the way for change,” she says. “If that change results in a more beautiful and functional home that families can enjoy for many years to come, then it’s a change for the better.”

At Luxury Guide, we are always looking for ways we can help those in need. (After all, our motto is “The greatest luxury of all is the ability to give back”). With a majority of Miami Art Week events canceled this year, we specifically wanted to give back to artists. One of our loyal readers, Frank A. Aguilar, came up with the idea of sponsoring a feature about his favorite artist, Pablo Carreño, in our publication. Thus, the HeART of Giving was born. We’d like to thank the following individuals and organizations who participated in the program. A portion of all donations will go to Artist Relief, a nonprofit that is supporting artists during the COVID-19 crisis.

ART OF GIVING READER’S CHOICE

el hijo de anamaria @PabloCarrenoArt

P

ablo Carreño defines himself as an innate artist. This Cuban-born master, who emigrated to New York in 1962, is extremely dedicated to his work, even stating in his famous quote that his favorite food is “scrambled acrylics with an oil and turpentine sauce and a dash of watercolors à la charcoal.” The works of this universal artist include murals, watercolors, pen and ink, oil paintings and portraits and combine a diversity of styles and forms with intense, vibrant colors. His art has been exhibited in numerous solo and collective shows and can be found in many prominent galleries throughout the world. Carreño is also highly respected by his peers, prominent personalities and collectors worldwide. He has been praised by many, including Peter T. Tunney, who said, “Pablo is a ‘true artist,’ pure in his abilities and intensely impassioned about the magical place we all exist in. His goal is singular, to achieve a higher ART ... He is consumed by this driving force and has become so in tune, his paintings actually run from his soul and heart, through his fingers and onto his canvas ... What an incredible luxury to see and feel the most talented of artists progressing into this unknown region.” What made you decide to become an artist? How did you get started? I started painting as a 3-year-old and never stopped! My artistic talent developed in me at an early age in a total and absolute way.

Self Portrait

Who or what would you say is your greatest inspiration? I am no one’s pupil. I never had any teachers or followed any artistic pattern. My natural and intrinsic inclinations have always been geared to total freedom in my paintings. What’s your favorite work of art? Every one of my works is my favorite. They are all unique because each carries a piece of who I am.

NOEL SUAREZ

CUBAN ARTIST, FIGURATIVE CUBISM @NoelSuarezArt

Noel Suarez with “Pop Reflections I,” oil and metallic acrylics on canvas

C

uban-born Noel Suarez is the embodiment of the passion and talent required by all great artists. He is recognized as one of the few artists whose careers are reflected in Miami’s ascendency to the world cultural stage. His style is an amalgam of structure and dreams, reality and mythology and the sensual and the divine. Collectively, the tapestry of his work creates a uniqueness that is characteristic of true artistic masters. What made you decide to become an artist? How did you get started? I come from a family of artists: My mother was a dancer, and my father was a photographer and painter. Not only was I blessed to have both talents but also to have careers in both. My need to create is a part of my reason for being. From a very early age, expressing myself through movement and drawing was a strong need that made me understand that this was my destiny.

“Siluetas VI,” 2017; mixed media on Arches

“Siluetas I – Variation I,” 2017; mixed media on Arches

What sets your work apart? Movement and theatrical elements, which come out unconsciously, have always been distinguishing factors of my work. The movement captures viewers’ attention and takes them into my world. Who or what are your biggest influences? I can go on forever on this subject! Who influences me? Italian classical masters such as Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian and Bellini; modern masters, starting with my muse, Tamara de Lempicka, followed by her teacher, André Lhote, and others from the cubism movement such as Braque, Picasso, Duchamp and Juan Gris; and Cuban masters such as Cundo Bermúdez, René Portocarrero, Mariano Rodriguez, Amelia Peláez and Servando Cabrera Moreno. From all these influences, I found my own contemporary identity and artistic expression. What influences me? Life is a great source of inspiration, as is traveling, which I do often. My background as a ballet dancer and a set and costume designer also allows me to create my own characters, my own plays and my own moments.

“Secessions II,” 2018; oil and metallic acrylics on canvas

“The Dancer II” bronze sculpture; 33" h with 12" onyx base b

What’s your favorite work of art? It is impossible for me to answer that question! I can’t just select one painting or sculpture from the hundreds that I love. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? ”If the passion is not in it, it’s not going to happen,” which is totally true. No matter what type of job or career you have (but especially in the arts), passion needs to be present. It is what drives you to the very end and achieve the impossible—even if you are not getting paid.

ART PREVAILS

Art has a way of bringing light into our darkest moments. And with everything that has happened this year, couldn’t we all use that right now? You won’t see the usual tents popping up, and your social calendar won’t be full of back-to-back events, but there is still plenty of art to see, enjoy, ponder, experience and buy this winter. Many fairs are offering impactful virtual exhibitions, while others are set to open their doors and safely welcome in visitors. And, past the first week of December, South Florida’s art scene will continue pushing through the weeds and blossoming with an assortment of cultural events. From Miami to Palm Beach, we’ve compiled a list of art happenings worth exploring. BY CHRISTIE GALEANO-DEMOTT LUXURY GUIDE

SPECIAL FEATURE

THE NEW ART WEEK

Miami might not have its usual inundation of art fairs, events or parties this December, but there are still plenty of worthwhile activities taking place. Here are just a handful of options.

Nov. 27–Dec. 6 DESIGN MIAMI/ As one of the only major fairs to have a physical presence this year, Design Miami/ has partnered with the Miami Design District for a series of exhibitions, activations and events. The centerpiece of the fair will be the debut of Podium inside the Moore Building, which will feature curated exhibitions by design galleries and artist studios. Expect to see 19th century Navajo textiles and other earlier works alongside contemporary designs by Roberto Lugo, Wendell Castell, the Haas Brothers and more. 191 NE 40th St., Miami; designmiami.com

Brazilian furniture company Artefacto recently asked 50 local artists and designers to create their own versions of its popular Tappo stool. During the first week of December, the stools will be put up for auction online, with all proceeds going to the Arts in Medicine program at Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute. The stools will also be on display at Artefacto’s Aventura showroom. 17651 Biscayne

Moroccan-born, Miami-based artist Nadia Karam (who goes by the alias Aidan Marak) is known for her large-scale paintings and collages that often layer original poetry and newsprint with female and abstract forms. In her upcoming show at Midtown’s Loft 235, she plays with themes of capitalism, religious conservatism and standards of beauty. The show and its title are small acts of defiance in the face of this year’s international art fair cancellations, as much of the work presented was created during quarantine. 235 NE 29th St.,

PRINCIPAL, CARLA GUILHEM INTERIOR DESIGN BY VANESSA MOLINA SANTAMARIA

orn in São Paulo, Carla Guilhem was exposed to the design craft from an early age. “Growing up, I would spend afternoons in my family’s millwork and furniture company,” she says. “I was mesmerized by the creative process, whether it was selecting the perfect natural wood and applying finishes or simply cutting and measuring the fabrics. Since then, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to creation and design.” She went on to study architecture in Brazil and interior design in Spain before moving to Italy and exhibiting her work in numerous worldrenowned design shows. Today, Guilhem is focused on growing her eponymous design firm, which focuses on residential interiors, furniture, commercial spaces and even yachts. “Every client is very special to me, and every project is unique,” she says. “I enjoy the challenge of creating entirely new solutions while applying my experience from previous projects.”

Carla Guilhem

Every client is special to me, and every project is unique. I enjoy the challenge of creating entirely new solutions while applying my experience from previous projects.

Describe your design aesthetic. I love modern Italian lines. Mixing them with the organic forms of Brazilian nature or with vivid Spanish colors creates a dynamic that underlies many of my creations. I like to combine organic and geometric shapes in harmonic coexistence. First designer to make an impression on you? The first job site I visited was Hotel Unique in São Paulo by architect Ruy Ohtake, the pioneer of informal abstractionism. It was an amazing experience to see the curves of his design emerge during the construction process. Projects you are currently working on? We have a few different projects going on right now: commercial spaces, three luxury single-family residences, a restaurant, two hotels, three apartments and a 127-foot yacht being built in Europe. Go-to paint color? Sherwin-Williams Alpaca. Tell us about the Design Home/less Network? We created this online platform to support artists who create and commercialize handmade objects on a smaller scale at an accessible price—thanks to reused or recycled materials and new production processes. The result is an appealing product that’s also environmentally conscious. Home decor stores you frequent? There are too many to mention! My favorites are Artefacto, Poliform, Ornare, Judith Norman, Anima Domus and StudioKaza. Where do you find inspiration? Nature is the most powerful inspiration of all for me. Each place I have lived has also given me many memories of shapes, forms and materials that I use when creating my designs. What would most people be surprised to learn about you? I love boxing to balance my creative mind.

IT IS ESSENTIAL TO PUT TOGETHER THE PERFECT TEAM OF ARCHITECTS, GENERAL CONTRACTORS, ARTISANS, VENDORS AND MANUFACTURERS TO BRING A CLIENT’S DREAMS TO LIFE. — STEVEN S LA FONTE O E

W

hen South Florida’s elite look to reimagine their homes with extraordinary design, they turn to Steven La Fonte of Steven La Fonte Design for his imaginative, impeccable taste and custom creations. But La Fonte knows his projects are only as good as the team with whom he works, which is why, for his latest masterpiece, a luxury residence at AquaBlu Fort Lauderdale, he joined forces with Antonio J. Torres, founder and director of Navicon Construction; and Claudio Faria, director of Ornare USA. Together, their combined talents and expertise resulted in a chic, contemporary home exploding with dramatic details, textures and finishes. We spoke with the trio to learn more about their synergy and how this led to the completed project. How did you get started on this project? STEVEN: First and foremost, it was essential to put together the perfect team of architects, general contractors, artisans, vendors and manufacturers to bring a client’s dreams to life. I turned to Antonio J. Torres at Navicon Construction for the his sensible design style and passion for architecture. Then, I needed a company to help create a stylish, contemporary kitchen and his-and-hers master closets. A designer friend introduced me to Claudio Faria at Ornare, and I fell in love with their quality customization, finishes, hardware and gadgets. Ornare is one of the most prestigious home brands, and I know I can depend on their premium standards to raise the bar in design. How did you work together to ensure that all of your visions aligned? ANTONIO: Communication between design and construction is crucial to delivering outstanding results, and it comes naturally to Steven and Claudio. We understand each other clearly, which makes the entire process run smoothly. When joined with Navicon’s organizational skills, supervision flexibility

and craftsmanship, we were able to deliver superior, sophisticated results. CLAUDIO: It was easy to work with Steven and Antonio, as they share our level of commitment to quality and service. At Ornare, we work closely with clients to design entire spaces that serve their individual needs while ensuring they’re done beautifully. We also customize designs with our endless options of quality materials and finishes. What key elements did you incorporate to round out the impressive space in this home? STEVEN: The home is situated on the Intracoastal, overlooking the gardens of an environmental preserve, the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. To complement this, I selected a palette of neutral colors and a combination of textures. Hints of color are used throughout each room with accent features such as the master bedroom’s blue upholstered wall and the pillows, art and accessories throughout. I try to stay aware of what’s on the market, as designers need to continuously educate themselves on what’s available, but I do not believe in trends—individuality is much more important to me. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN TRENDS— INDIVIDUALITY IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO ME. — STEVEN LA FONTE

What are the most important elements to consider when designing a kitchen that is both functional and beautiful? CLAUDIO: Lighting is an integral part of any room, but especially in the kitchen, where it’s required for performance and ambiance. We love finding creative ways to insert lighting, including within drawers and storage spaces. Storage is also important. We have custom designs that offer organizational components that consider every need.

What are some challenges you faced in this project? How did you solve them? ANTONIO: Working in condo buildings requires

extra logistics to bring materials up to the unit. No matter how spacious the elevators and corridors are, you run into the challenge of having to hoist materials through the balcony. For this project, we worked together to hoist a single 10-by-6.5-foot piece of Statuario marble (the top of the kitchen island) up 14 floors! STEVEN: Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the home provide amazing views, but the sun’s

reflection was a huge concern to the client. To remedy this, I used matte-finished porcelain wood tiles in a subdued gray shade throughout the home. Several walls are clad with mattepainted wood panels or upholstered with fabric, and we avoided using glass tops on tables. ANTONIO: Steven also explained to the homeowners that new lighting needed to be added in the living and family areas in order to make these spaces rich yet elegant at night. However, the owners were concerned that they would lose the existing tall ceiling height. Using fixtures by Apure Architectural Lighting, we managed to create a beautiful light distribution by only dropping the ceiling about 1 inch. Are there any new or noteworthy pieces? STEVEN: The powder room is a small space, so I created a more dramatic look with the floating black marble vanity with seamless white veining, an integrated sink, glass wall cladding and sculptural hardware. ANTONIO: The marble island was sourced in Italy, handpicked directly by our team at the quarry in Carrara, Tuscany. The project PROMOTION

demanded a dramatic vein; therefore selecting a large block that would allow us to obtain the desired dimension and unique color and contrast was key. Complementing the island is a knife-edge ceiling mimicking the shape of the counter, with an accent LED light by Delta Light, adding a modern accent to the ancient stone. CLAUDIO: The finishes also made this project stand out. For the kitchen, Steven selected smoked-oak wood veneer, iron and steel metallic paint, and Argento matte bronze glass.

What was your favorite part of the process? STEVEN: I love customizing my own furnishings,

cabinetry and wall treatments, which I try to manufacture. In fact, 99% of this project was custom-made by Miami companies. ANTONIO: No doubt that working along with

Steven was my favorite part of the project! It is a privilege. Steven has the vision, and he is fast in making decisions. We support his process by detailing every aspect in plans, shop drawings, purchasing, logistics and craftsmanship to obtain high-end results.

TRENDING REAL ESTATE

SOUTH FLORIDA IS HOT

BROUGHT TO YOU BY...

And we’re not talking about the weather! With a continued influx of out-ofstate buyers and historically low interest rates, South Florida’s real estate market is as hot as ever. We spoke with three of the region’s top real estate experts about the market’s current state, tips for buyers and sellers, and predictions for the future. To read the full interviews, visit luxuryguideusa.com.

Jorge L. Guerra Jr. launched his brokerage firm Real Estate Sales Force (RESF) 15 years ago; he now has four offices throughout South Florida with over 475 agents. He also serves as the 2020 chairman of the Miami Association of Realtors and the 2021 global liaison of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). How would you characterize the current state of luxury real estate in Miami? Since the pandemic set in, people from the Northeast have been flooding the region and absorbing some of the inventory. Additionally, our international market is fueled by once-in-alifetime interest rates, which have shined a light on South Florida. Tips for buyers/sellers? For buyers: Come pre-qualified, work with an experienced agent, and do your research to understand pricing— because you have to be aggressive. For sellers: With low inventory, low interest rates and an unpredictable future, right now is the perfect time to get top dollar for your property. Also, invest in a real estate professional that leverages technology since most showings are now virtual.

Having lived half of her life abroad, Patricia Anglero, an Angola native of Portuguese descent, has gained a broad understanding of international business. She earned her real estate license in 2003, successfully transitioning from an agent at Galleria Collection to owner of Galleria International Realty, where real estate is treated as a “people business,” and agents are given the support they need. What are your predictions for Broward real estate over the next six to 12 months? The appeal of South Florida to Northeast buyers will continue to be the driving force of our healthy market—about 65% of our buyers are from out of state. Low inventory is driving the price, and the influx of buyers seeking singlefamily homes in the suburbs has not stopped. What’s a common mistake buyers/sellers make? Thinking that dealing with the seller directly is the best course of action. Owning a home is one of the most important decisions you will make. A reputable Realtor will know how to guide buyers and sellers in pricing their properties correctly.

Bill Mate began his real estate career about 15 years ago by selling luxury homes in the Jupiter area; today, his firm Paradise Real Estate International has 150 agents. He is also the 2021 president of the Miami Association of Realtors’ Jupiter-TequestaHobe Sound Board of Governors. Any noticeable trends in the Palm Beach market over the last six months? We have seen increased pricing on homes because of the demand and influx of buyers. The opposite occurs with inventory: As sales and prices increase, there are fewer homes on the market, which fuels higher prices. The trend has shown many homes selling in a week—or even a day. If you are a buyer, don’t hesitate. What are the best neighborhoods right now for luxury buyers/sellers/investments? Palm Beach continues to attract wealthy residents to its luxury atmosphere and environment, but in Jupiter, many club communities offer golf, tennis, social amenities and access to water. Admirals Cove, for example, has 6 miles of tidal water behind its gates, and almost everyone has a dock in their backyard.

BEFORE YOU REMARRY, DO THIS EMBARK ON YOUR NEXT LIFE PATH EQUIPPED WITH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING.

I

f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.

if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2

Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony.

Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. That’s why eight out of 10 women find it helpful to think about wealth along three different dimensions.2

Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1

Liquidity: The cash at your disposal, which you need for shortterm expenses over the next three or so years.

What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage. But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial well-being— at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2

Legacy: The investments that will continue after you’re gone, and can help others with their needs.

If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows. Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage. Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially

Longevity: Savings and investments you can use for longer-term needs, from the next four years into retirement.

Thinking through these dimensions helps you sort out what you aim to accomplish now and in the future. What do you want your legacy to be? How will you achieve these things? Who are the people who matter most to you? Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key.

Laura Raybin Miller Vice President of Wealth Management Financial Advisor

Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership. Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come. Ask the Expert

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS:

CRIMINAL TAX INVESTIGATIONS Miami-based board-certified criminal tax attorney David M. Garvin, P.A. shares his expertise about criminal tax investigations and what steps to take if you become the target of one. Tell us about your background. What made you become a criminal tax attorney? I am originally from Pittsburgh. I went to the University of Miami as an undergraduate, concentrating in accounting. I became a CPA before deciding to attend UM’s law school, where I received a J.D. and, later, an LLM in taxation. During my last year of law school, I was fortunate to have been a law clerk for Philip T. Weinstein, a renowned criminal tax lawyer. I always wanted to try significant trials; working in federal court in criminal tax and economic crime cases enables me to do that. How are you different from a “regular” criminal attorney or tax attorney? There are many good criminal lawyers who concentrate on federal cases but only a few who also concentrate on federal tax matters. During a criminal tax trial, the government has IRS agents and other tax experts testify. A lawyer who does not have a great deal of knowledge of tax laws will be at a disadvantage. This problem is not resolved by associating a tax lawyer because only one lawyer can examine a witness at one time. Furthermore, most tax lawyers concentrate their practices on civil tax issues. They do not have heavy jury trial experience because tax court cases do not have juries. What types of criminal income tax investigations are there? There are generally two types of criminal tax investigations: IRS administrative investigations, conducted by IRS agents and tried by Department of Justice tax division lawyers, focus only on tax crimes. Grand jury investigations, conducted by the local U.S. attorney’s office, may include several crimes, including tax violations. How do criminal tax investigations work? Generally, two special agents are assigned to conduct the investigation. They gather data and interview witnesses. This may take several years. Ultimately, they will write a report requesting authority from the DOJ to proceed to charge the taxpayer.

What’s the first thing I should do if I believe I am the target of an investigation? Retain an experienced criminal tax lawyer. As a taxpayer, it is important that you do your due diligence. You have an absolute right to ask any lawyer you are considering the names, case numbers and outcomes of their last 10 criminal tax cases. Keep in mind, most lawyers have never had a criminal tax trial while they were representing the taxpayer defendant. If IRS agents arrive at my business, should I speak with them to show I have nothing to hide? IRS agents have already researched the person they are requesting to interview and will intentionally not give advance notice. You should not agree to be interviewed without a few days to think it over and to have your lawyer present. Politely decline, get their business cards, and tell them your lawyer will call them. Should I amend my tax returns to correct perceived errors? Once you are notified that you are a target of a criminal tax investigation, the government will argue that any returns filed late or amended are untimely, not voluntary, irrelevant and inadmissible. An amended tax return may also be argued to be an admission of guilt. Will hiring a well-known tax attorney cause the IRS to assume I must be guilty? IRS agents have already formed their opinions when they identify the target of their investigation. Retaining the best criminal tax lawyer available with a proven jury trial track record shows that you are serious about your liberty and your innocence. Having a boardcertified attorney may also give the DOJ pause before authorizing a borderline case for prosecution. What happens to me if I am wrongfully convicted? You will have the right to file an appeal. However, in many cases, the court will order the taxpayer to commence his sentence while the appeal is pending.

CAREFREE CRUISING From weekend jaunts to far-flung getaways, adventures await aboard these new luxury yachts. BY DIANE M. BYRNE

FARTHER & FASTER If you long to travel farther while still going relatively fast, the Germán Frers–designed Sirena 58 Coupé will exceed your expectations: It has a range of about 850 nautical miles at 10 knots, plus a top speed approaching 30 knots. Unusual for this size range, the yacht also offers a two-cabin option where your suite has a hidden stairway leading to the foredeck, serving as a private alfresco lounge. Plus, you get to choose the woods and fabrics used throughout the decor. sirenayachts.com LENGTH: 60 ft., 10 in. | BEAM: 17 ft., 6 in. | DRAFT: 4 ft., 1 in. The world is your oyster with Luminosity, a new custom yacht from Benetti whose impressive 8,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots means you can cross oceans with enough reserve to explore far-flung shores. You’ll be inspired by the excerpt from Moby Dick engraved on the main lounge’s pillars and the 3,983-square-foot video wall stretching the height of the main lobby’s stairway that depicts a forest whose branches gently sway as you pass. Luminosity also has 10-foot-high windows to bring the outdoors in, along with a spa containing a Turkish bath and a sauna. benettiyachts.it LENGTH: 353 ft. | BEAM: 55 ft., 8 in. | DRAFT: 14 ft., 9 in. | STATEROOMS: 12 ENGINE: 6 Caterpillar C32 diesels with ABB Azipod | TOP SPEED: 16.5 knots

Sunreef Yachts understands that today’s yacht owners are more environmentally conscious, which is why the shipyard created an Eco version of its popular 80 Sunreef Power catamaran. With solar panels, an ultralight battery bank and electric engines, the 80 Sunreef Power Eco was engineered to consume less fuel (it does have diesel generators for convenience) while making very little noise. A kite sail is an option too. Ethically sourced woods are available for the interior, which sleeps up to eight comfortably. ROOM with a VIEW

At Mr & Mrs Smith, we adore a sink-into hotel bed with the highest thread count, but we don’t believe that a hotel room is just somewhere to lay your head. We’re drawn to the places that architects might stick on their inspo board: those with beatific backdrops and exquisite interiors right down to the designer hand soap—and where a private pool is the least of the luxuries on offer (retractable roof for stargazing, anyone?). Here, we’ve selected five luxury hideaways where laying your head becomes living the dream.

<< The Pods

THE LINDIS, NEW ZEALAND Spying on nature is all the more seductive at The Lindis, an ultra-luxurious hideaway in New Zealand’s Ahuriri Valley, where the main hotel’s undulating roof and low-key coloring put it at ease amid the towering mountains and fertile wetlands. Things get even more voyeuristic in the “Pods,” unobtrusive yet stylish lodges set apart from the main hotel. Three mirrored-glass window walls let you see all the goings-on in the valley, be it the peaks turning from stony-faced to snow-topped, the sinuous Ahuriri River flowing along or a rare kākāriki fluttering by. Or, you can be one with the wild by watching it unfold from your alfresco hot tub. Activities favor get-up-and-go-go-go sorts—exploring ice caves, swooping over glaciers in a helicopter, biking beside Lake Oahu and the like—so you’ll be thankful to return to your snug indoor great-outdoors nest.

Suite Cabin

ARCTIC BATH, SWEDEN There are many “my goodness” moments to be had at Arctic Bath, an extraordinary new resort in Swedish Lapland: its floating spa that looks like a game of pickup sticks, the sharp intake of breath as you plunge into the icy river that flows below (trust us, it’s quite refreshing) and the geometric glass-fronted Suite Cabin that would make the most devout maximalist a cozy-minimalism convert. Plus, it’s eco-friendly, built without harming a single tree. Depending on the season, your view is either Santa-ready snow and the frosted river (a wood-pellet burner and underfloor heating will keep you toasty) or pine clusters and timid fauna accentuated with mood-ring-colored skies.

Cliffside balé at the Marangga Villa, Nihi Sumba, Indonesia

Marangga Villa

NIHI SUMBA, INDONESIA There’s an appealing air of authenticity surrounding Nihi Sumba, a jungly beachside retreat on one of Indonesia’s lesser-trodden isles. After all, the hotel’s Sumba Foundation provides humanitarian aid and educational programs to local islanders. The Marangga Villa includes a private butler; an indoor-outdoor bathroom with a tub large enough to fit one of Sumba’s wild horses; and your own clifftop balé, which can be set up for ocean-view lunches, massages and snoozing under the stars (with a mosquito net). When you’re not lazing in your infinity pool or knocking back housemade chocolates, why not try the hotel’s most thrilling aspect: a private stretch of shore where the famously gnarly “God’s Left” surf wave barrels in.

A butler will keep you fed, hydrated and entertained (by arranging manta ray- and turtle-scoping snorkeling sessions, marine biologist tours and more); there’s a rooftop deck for dining with vividly blue Indian Ocean views; and you needn’t leave your bed to stargaze. Simply press a button, and the roof will roll right back for a—quite literally—heavenly night. If there’s anything to entice you from your retreat, it’s the private beach, open-air cinema, floodlit tennis court and decadent dining options. A fleet of provided bikes (or a barefoot walk) will get you there and back in style.

Lake Cabin at Lime Wood in Hampshire, England

Lake Cabin

Lime Wood, the Duke of Clarence’s former country estate, is a regal darling in which we could definitely see ourselves sweeping around in period dress. But away from the genteel main house, down a private path by the grounds’ peaceful lake, is a timber-clad cabin that offers couples the utmost privacy—so much so that a silver roll-top bathtub has been placed on the balcony for alfresco dips (with a wood burner to warm your unmentionables). The residence is cantilevered over the lake for a placid panorama. Within, it’s dressed to impress with colorful floor tiling, a mix-it-yourself bar, dainty chandeliers and an emerald velvet sofa. Lime Wood’s excellent garden-to-plate dining (courtesy of super-chefs Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder) and the floralscented Herb House Spa are just a lazy stroll away.

Follow the light to downtown New Orleans, where Maison de la Luz is a bright, shining beacon of a stay with a full-swing speak-easy (a former winner of best date night bar in the Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Awards), jazzed-up decor and a seriously covetable hideout in the Grand Studio Suite. This hip hangout’s look is infused with local spirit: Vintage florals and tasseled velvets paired with one-off artworks and quirky keepsakes.

Anson Suite “Piazza” at Zero George Street, Charleston

Anson Suite

ZERO GEORGE STREET, CHARLESTON Southern belle Zero George Street has taken five 19th-century colonial buildings near main drag King Street and primped and preened them into a thoroughly modern hideaway. Sequester away in the Anson Suite, where you can lazily fan yourself on your private furnished piazza. Inside, period detailing, heart-pine flooring, duck-egg-blue walls and sophisticated furnishings make this the coziest of nests in which to hunker down (until the 5 p.m. wine and cheese hour, that is).

WHO ARE MR & MRS SMITH? Founded in 2003, Mr & Mrs Smith is the travel club for hotel lovers, an award-winning boutique-hotel booking service specializing in the world’s most seductive stays. There are now more than 1,300 boutique and luxury hotels in the collection, all handpicked by experts and reviewed (anonymously) by globetrotting tastemakers. The Suite

THE DRAYTON HOTEL, SAVANNAH Unafraid of color, bedecked with plants and blessed with both a basement speak-easy and a rooftop bar, The Drayton is a stylish base in Savannah’s Spanish-moss-draped historic district. Its spacious suite, which boasts a clear view of City Hall’s decorative dome, has a retro look that’s further enhanced by the bathroom, where the hotel’s only bathtub resides. Follow a leisurely soak with a few slugs of bourbon as you take in the view from the top.

FAENA HOTEL MIAMI BEACH With a gilded mammoth skeleton on the grounds (courtesy of Damien Hirst), taxidermy peacocks propping up the bar and a dazzling vintage-style theater, Faena Hotel Miami Beach is a fantastical showpiece of a staycation. After all, its lashings of leopard print, art deco detailing and gilt edges are the work of flamboyant director Baz Luhrmann and his costume-designer wife, Catherine Martin. Not only can eating according to your deficiency make you feel better, but certain foods can actually boost your immune system and increase serotonin.

HOME SOUP HOME

SOUP FOR THE SOUL IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME

BY ANA CASTANO Architect, Writer, Pilot, Cook at Heart & Creator of The Healing Soup

J

ust a few months ago, I was getting ready to launch The Healing Soup, a bistro designed to match specific ingredients in soup to individuals’ needs. I was searching for the perfect spot to lay down roots with a quaint, zen decor in mind. But then, the pandemic hit, and like many other small business owners, I had to pivot. I am a firm believer that with the right mindset, you can redirect your energy and find something positive in every situation—turning tragedy into a blessing in disguise. For instance, one good thing that came from this situation was that we were forced to eat at home more often, which allows us to eat better and focus on our health. Food from the earth fuels the body. Not only can eating according to your deficiency make you feel better, but certain foods can actually boost your immune system and increase serotonin. My extensive research has found that blood-type diets, along with eating plans such as glutenfree, dairy-free ketogenic, vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian, can help those with health conditions

such as high blood pressure, celiac disease, inflammatory disease, allergies and more. It is my passion to help cure human ailments through nutrition. After all, ”You are what you eat.” Using my flexible “go with the flow” attitude, I have adjusted my plan. The Healing Soup, along with Chef Fernando Gonce, will now be offering more intimate, private experiences of healing through food (catering to groups of 10 or less) either at your home or at one of several locations to which we have access throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. As always, I encourage everyone to open their minds to uncontrollable circumstances. Don’t try to control every outcome. Instead, implement the power of positive thinking and focus your energy on what lessons you can learn from the experience. Contact me to book your healing experience, and let’s start the journey of finding health, peace and harmony together.

ABOUT ME

I am an architect, a writer and a cook at heart, and I enjoy helping people live their best lives. When I’m not in the kitchen creating tasty soups, I am busy working on new design projects and inspiring love and happiness in others through my motivational podcasts. A mom of two, I balance work and home life through traveling, eating right, practicing yoga and, lately, taking flying lessons to become a private pilot. LOSE UP TO 2-6 INCHES IN YOUR FIRST SESSION IF YOU DON’T LOSE, YOU DON’T PAY

ASK THE EXPERT Nina Presman, founder of the Anti-Aging Center of Boca, discusses the benefits of a new noninvasive treatment called Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU. WHAT IS ALPHA LIPOLYSIS WITH HIFU? Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU is a nonsurgical, natural phenomenon based on high-frequency sound waves that is designed to help patients lose fat and tighten skin quickly, easily and risk-free. High Vibrating Sound Waves cause fat cells to explode immediately, and when delivered together with HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound), it melts them while shrinking the skin from the inside out and building collagen. It even removes stubborn wrinkles and crepey skin while sparing the vascular, nervous and muscular tissues. Anti-Aging Center of Boca specializes in all areas of nonsurgical body sculpting and antiaging services that enhance one’s overall well-being. Our body-sculpting technology takes HIFU, Acoustic Lipoliser and Ultrasound Cavitation to a new level where instead of just puncturing the fat cells, we completely liquefy and melt them, resulting in immediate and permanent loss of inches plus tightening and rejuvenation of the skin. While the vibration of the sound waves causes complete elimination of the fat cells on all different levels, depending on the size and density of the fat and skin, HIFU delivered with sound waves shrinks the skin from inside and builds collagen. Results are visible and improvement is immediate.

HOW DOES THE GUARANTEE WORK? Our technician measures and photographs the patient. After the treatment, a second photo and new measurements are taken. If your second measurement is not less than the first, then you will not pay for the service. It is that simple. We stand by our work 100 percent. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? • This procedure is done without anesthesia and is noninvasive (no cutting, scars or post-operative care). • This treatment allows for a full social life both before and after the sessions. Lose inches of fat without exercise or diet. • Relaxes muscles, reduces nerve excitability and stimulates nerve transmission. • Reduces scar tissue and fades stretch marks. • Increases lymphatic system activity. • Stimulates production of collagen. • Reduces inches of measurement with each session.

See more before-and-after photos at

antiagingcenterofboca.com

ARE THERE ANY RISKS? The science was so compelling that even the FDA approved this process as a way to eliminate fat without endangering the health of the patient. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TREATMENTS? The results have been so dramatic and consistent, we have adopted a no-moneyupfront guarantee. That means if you do not reduce in size (in the area worked on), you do not pay for the service.

ABOUT NINA PRESMAN Nina Presman came to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1979. After her own struggles with trying to live up to the competitive standards of American beauty and body image, she became a personal trainer and a nutrition consultant. In 2013, she graduated from Argosy University with a BA in science of psychology. She also entered a school to learn about skin and aesthetics and completed multiple degrees in advanced skin care. Her dream was to combine the understanding of self-actualization and happiness with developing the outer beauty to match the inner self. With this in mind, she created the AntiAging Center of Boca, where a person can achieve the look he or she wants without surgery and learn how to be truly happy on the inside. Nina found practitioners who share her views and know how to deliver healing and awareness to anyone who walks through the door.

Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR

TRENDING CARS

DESIGN EVOLUTION As you can see in these moving masterpieces, automotive design is, above all else, a fluid process. BY JERRY PEREZ

THE FUTURE LOOKS AWESOME It won’t be long before artificial intelligence plays a prominent role in the automobile design process. The Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR, inspired by the Avatar films, offers a glimpse at what this might look like: smooth lines, sustainable interiors, an organic battery and animal-like capabilities. The “scales,” for example, are reminiscent of an agile reptile, while its trick axles and wheels allow it to move sideways like a crab. The interior comes to life by placing a hand on the center console as the vehicle recognizes the driver’s heartbeat and breathing. It may only be a concept, but don’t be surprised to see its elements sprinkled into models in the near future. mercedes-benz.com

Infiniti QX60 Monograph Concept

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT BLAST FROM THE PAST The most radical car designs are typically born and tested on racetracks, as is the case of the new McLaren Senna GTR LM, which pays homage to its predecessors from the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. The retro-looking vehicles represent forward-thinking automotive design while proudly showing off exotic paints, throwback stickers and loads of carbon fiber—even the wheels are copies of the originals. McLaren customers commissioned the five one-offs seen here, so your chances of owning one are currently as limited as their VINs. mclaren.com

New technologies allow designers to get even more creative with their materials and techniques. Take the new Infiniti QX60 Monograph Concept (essentially a production-ready prototype), for example. The three-row SUV boasts a raised sloping roof, wide wheel arches, high doors and narrow windows that exude exclusivity while keeping things compact for a vehicle of its size. A few years ago, a design this dramatic would have looked cartoonish, but modern methods have rendered this a truly sensual automobile.

SEASON’S TRENDINGS

EXPERT PICKS FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS

Home technology trends and gifts for the holiday season, brought to you by BDigital Technologies. BY SHERRI BALEFSKY HANSON

F

or more than 17 years, BDigital Technologies has been one of South Florida’s leading specialists in the integration of custom automation technologies into homes and offices, including audio-video components, home theaters, lighting and shade control, home surveillance and more. It provides a full range of design and installation services and represents the most prestigious brands in the industry, including a special partnership with luxury Danish brand Bang & Olufsen. We spoke with Bob Melnik, principal of BDigital Technologies and owner of several South Florida Bang & Olufsen franchises, about the company, what trends we can expect in home technology and his top picks for gifts this holiday season. What makes BDigital Technologies different from other home technology companies? We are a fullservice home technology company, from the initial consultation to the design and installation. We listen to our clients’ needs and work closely with their architects and designers to blend technology into their vision. Plus, our customer service and support are second to none. What’s new in home automation? What can we expect in the near future? Wireless technology is getting even faster, and voice-control devices are improving dramatically. Also, wellness elements are being blended into technology. Why Bang & Olufsen? What makes us truly unique is our ownership of a dedicated Bang & Olufsen showroom. Our synergetic relationship with the home electronics company provides us with the resources and capabilities needed to integrate advanced home entertainment into any environment. In honor of its 95th anniversary, the brand recently introduced the allnew Golden Collection, reimagining some of its most popular items in colors and materials associated with warmth and lasting value: golden-hued aluminum, earth-toned textiles, genuine lambskin, solid oak and Carrara marble.
