A FRESH TAKE ON Lowcountry Design
Words by Robin Howard Photography by Julia LynnJennifer Ferrell of Riverside Designers takes us inside a recent Kiawah Island project that perfectly showcases their fresh, edited approach to classic southern design.
Interior designer Jennifer Ferrell, owner of Riverside Designers, is known in Charleston for her high-end whole-home renovations and new construction projects that bring a fresh, edited approach to classic southern design. Ferrell’s portfolio includes luxury homes on Kiawah Island, Daniel Island, Seabrook Island, Wadmalaw Island, and historic Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
As such, she knows a thing or two, or twenty, about maximizing the functionality and joy of your new home. “It’s so worth it to hire a designer when you’re buying or building your dream house,” she says. “When you’re spending that much money on a luxury home, it makes sense for the interiors to be on par with the value and aesthetic of the house itself. Not only will you actually enjoy your new home more but you will also be protecting your investment by keeping it up to date.”
Ferrell also advises clients moving to the Lowcountry to carefully consider what to bring from their old home. “Often, moving here involves not only a new house but an entirely new lifestyle in a different
climate. That requires thoughtful design, and we work with clients to advise which art, heirlooms, and antiques make sense in their new house. Don’t pay to move or store everything just to see if it will work, when you can absolutely plan ahead.”
Ferrell’s most recent project on Kiawah Island is a perfect example of tailored Lowcountry design that feels welcoming in all seasons. The client wanted the interior design to compliment the beautiful views and have a southern, cottage feel but didn’t want anything overly formal, themed, or beachy. Ferrell designed a lovely, elegant retreat and furnished it down to the bookshelves.
Though the foundational palette is neutral, she used elements such as green cabinetry in the wet bar to have fun with color in a way the client won’t get tired of. She also used classic details, such as marble in the bathrooms, to make the home feel exceptionally luxurious. “I really respect the aesthetics my clients are drawn to, but part of my job is to push them gently a bit outside the box,” she says. “In the end, they end up happily surprised.”
“It’s so worth it to hire a designer when you’re buying or building your dream house…not only will you actually enjoy your new home more, but you will also be protecting your investment by keeping it up to date.”

Just like the other units, these have undergone extensive renovations, including heart pine flooring, updated kitchens, new appliances, a new roof, HVAC systems, tankless water heaters, and exquisite finishes.
Turnkey Short-Term Rentals
All four units in the duplexes have obtained legal shortterm rental licenses, making them a prime investment for those seeking immediate income generation. The units are turnkey, fully furnished, ensuring a seamless transition for guests and an effortless management experience for the owner.
Tropical Oasis and Gated Backyard
Behind 13 Kracke Street, you’ll discover a fully gated backyard tropical oasis. This serene space features a custom-built pergola, grill, and Adirondack chairs, creating a private retreat for guests to relax and unwind.
Ample Off-Street Parking
One of the most coveted features in downtown Charleston is the availability of off-street parking. This property provides a total of 10 dedicated off-street parking spaces, ensuring convenience and peace of mind for residents and guests. For added convenience there is a Tesla charging station at 13 Kracke Street.
This unique investment opportunity presents a rare chance to own a remarkable property with multiple income-generating units in downtown Charleston. Whether you choose to live in the single-family home and manage the duplexes or live in the smallest unit and rent out the rest, this property is a smart choice for investors seeking both historical charm and a profitable return.
The Cannonborough Elliotborough neighborhood is a prime location for dining, shopping and exploring all that the city has to offer. Don’t miss out on this chance to own a piece of Charleston’s rich heritage and secure a solid financial future.
“Imagine living in one of Downtown’s best locations and adding to your portfolio at the same time. It’s an incredible opportunity.”
Modern Island Life

Words by Robin Howard
Pastel-painted Daniel Island is the picture of modern island life. To the east of the Charleston Peninsula lies this 4000-acre island, once privately owned by the Guggenheim Foundation.
The island is a master-planned community of neighborhoods, parks, schools, lakes, trails, shops, and restaurants. Smythe Park and Lake are a hub for community events and residents. The extensive 25+ mile trail system winds through maritime forests, along the marsh and water’s edge, and through idyllic neighborhoods.
Residents flock to the island for access to deep water boating and the abundance of water activities the Cooper and Wando Rivers have to offer. The newly renovated Waterfront Park is a community gathering place where residents can access two boat docks, the Daniel Island Ferry station, a sailing club, a Coastal Expeditions outpost, fishing and crabbing piers, a children’s splash fountain and playground, local shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and green space for live music.
The newly expanded Credit One Stadium is home to the Credit One Charleston Open, an all-women’s professional tennis tournament that draws athletes from around the globe. The stadium also serves as a music venue for summer concerts.
Daniel Island Club features 36 holes that weave through a Lowcountry landscape of saltwater marsh, tidal creeks and waterways. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Beresford Creek Course opened in 2000, followed by the Ralston Creek Course designed by Rees Jones, which opened in 2006.
The island is astonishingly beautiful, retaining magical lowcountry vistas iconic to the region. Filled with abundant wildlife – deer, great blue herons, osprey, and turtles to name a few –residents take advantage of the many ponds, lakes, and creeks bursting with fish and crabs.
Housing on Daniel Island began development in 1996. Architectural influences range from traditional to more contemporary takes on classic lowcountry style. Those fortunate to call the island home enjoy easy access to the beach and downtown, each a short 15-minute drive. While homes may lack the wabi-sabi quirks of Historic Downtown, for those seeking a haven of peace and privacy, Daniel Island may be the ideal address.
