CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
Robin Davisson StudioLab RD
Contemporary, abstract artist Robin Davisson wants to cultivate, encourage, and examine these connections by opening her studio to the public and offering an unfiltered, behindthe-scenes look at the art-making process. Welcome to Georgetown’s newest creative hub, StudioLab RD. Visitors to Davisson’s sun-filled studio are invited upstairs to watch her at work —from testing ideas in her sketchbook and prepping canvases to mixing and applying paints and discerning the final touches on completed pieces. The studio’s street level houses a cozy lounge area where visitors can browse available art, flip through her extensive library of art books, enjoy a cup of coffee, kick their feet up, or all of the above! After more than two decades working as an award-winning biomedical scientist, and reaching the peak of academia, Davisson took a leap of faith and followed her passion for art and painting. At StudioLab, you can forget the hushed, “don’t touch” mentality of many other art-centric spaces – there is always music playing, coffee brewing and creative energy flowing, which Davisson hopes will inspire guests to jump in and join her on her artistic journey or embark on one of their own.
“
At the heart of every piece of art are connections waiting to occur. The internal and external dialogues that develop before, during, and after an artist is at work. The curiosity and emotions that emerge when something challenges, moves, or inspires. The conversations that unfold when embarking upon a path of discovery, exploring hidden passions, unearthing one’s truth.
”
But you don’t have to think of yourself as an artist to visit or enjoy StudioLab. In fact, Davisson is hopeful that those who don’t consider themselves creative (a frequent fallacy!) will discover their buried artistic spark inside her studio. With salons, a creator-in-residence program and other offerings in the works, the goal of StudioLab is not only to create community for local artists and creatives, but to also introduce a wider community to an intimate backstage peek into the art world. Davisson is accessible and available during open studio hours and is excited to chat with visitors and exchange ideas. Her intention is to explore the creative process together. “I am bursting with so much enthusiasm for what I do now that I want everyone to be a part of it. The joy of having discovered this passion in my life after doing something seemingly so different for so long is exhilarating,” said Davisson. “I want others to experience it, too, and to take some of what I am feeling and experiencing home with them.” 1037 33rd St. NW, Washington DC (202) 851-4976 | Wed - Sat, 11am - 5pm. studiolab_rd |
