ON LANDSCAPE
This is the first time in nature in which human activities have been the prime motivators for the changing environmental impact on the earth, and an interest in the Anthropocene is crucial to an understanding of Francesca Piquera’s photographic work. Her photographs show the forces of a dynamic instability and the “influence of man on the landscape, on its environment, on nature, and its vital space.”
Although she does not show human beings in her photographs - their presence is suggested by the forces they collectively have asserted on the balance of natural forces. A tipping point has been reached in the land, the air, and the sea and as humans endeavor to try to mine the resources from this Earth, their activities have unleashed a new dynamic that is quickly altering the world as we have known it.
MAR
The dramatism and her emphasis on the atmosphere in Piqueras’ photography is also evident in the series titled “Mar” (Sea). The photographs were shot in coastal Peru, a few hundred kilometers south of the Ecuadorian border, a seemingly end-of-the-world like location that is often frequented by thrill seeking surfers. Piqueras elegantly captures the ferocity of the waves, juxtaposing such a graceful dance with the very violent and forceful nature of the sea. While capturing movement, she also pushes the eye beyond the obvious, asking the audience to truly feel the clash of the waves as if they were at the very location. In focusing on the macro-image and printing the series large-scale, Piqueras wants the viewer to digest the immensity of nature versus the paradox of vulnerability of mankind. She believes that it is important that “images carry a certain dimension in order to give the scale of the monumental.” There is an almost timeless theme of man trying to tame the seas. The audience, in return, feels that they can physically get inside the image and are touched by the drama.
By photographer Francesca Piqeuras’, who has dramatically captured the effect humans have had as the major force on nature in this new Anthropocene epoch.ANDES
In her series titled Andes, for example, she highlights man’s impact on ecology. Through her bold approach of the landscapes of the Andean mountains, Piqueras turns this theme into a spectacular work of art. The vibrancy of the colors near the summits of the Andes, previously covered and protected by layers of ice, is a consequence of our actions which have led to climate change and global warming. The series presents darkly poetic and beautiful Peruvian landscapes which have lost their glaciers due to global warming. Piqueras present romantic, painterly photographs where the “colorful striations bear witness to scars left by an invisible hand.”
CINEMATIC INSPIRATION
Both of Francesca Piqeuras’ parents were artists and their closest friends were the likes of Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Salvador Dali. She received her first camera at a young age, and began taking pictures around the age of thirteen. Studying Art History and Cinema, Piqueras presented her first series of black and white photographs in 2007, later turning into the field of color photography. Cinema and painting have always been the artist’s main points of inspiration. In fact, one of her favorite movies, Antonioni’s Deserto Rossi, was a significant influence on her inclination to create striking color contrasts, and her fascination with desolate industrial landscapes. It was no surprise that Piqueras was drawn to the forces of nature.
COMBINING MEANING AND AESTHETICS
Piqueras’ emphasis on abstraction and her attachment to the beauty of the shape and light of the sand fields presents an aesthetic that is expressive and reflective. Although Dune, for example, is a series of images that are highly visually appealing, they still underline environmental themes. The series may allude to what would be left of our Earth once man has departed. It could also be the primordial earth. Piqueras masterfully combines drama and beauty, meaning and aesthetics in her cinematic, poetic images.
“What I am interested in,” says Piqueras, “is what man builds in his environment, what he does with it, so this is, in effect, an environmental theme in the sociological sense rather than the biological.”
- Francesca Piquera
MAN VS NATURE
The visual dialogue of man’s influences on landscapes and seascapes remain as a continuous theme throughout the work of Francesca Piqueras. Her photographs ultimately deal with the effects of industrialization and the resultant transformation of the environment. The darkly poetic yet cinematic and elegant photographs push the viewer to confront rather unsettling realities. The work of Piqueras is featured and has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, such as the Eretz Israel Museum, Tev Aviv, Israel, Palazzo Ducale di Massa, Massa, Italy and Beijing World Art Museum, Beijing, China. Today the artist is working on several other projects based upon our post-industrial world.

DUNE
A similar sense of abstraction and a painterly quality is also visible in Piqueras’ other series, Dune, a group of sensual images immersing the viewer in an otherworldly desert. Standing on the more minimalist end of the spectrum among her work, the images focus on shapes and shadows, unveiling natural geometry that transcends time and place. On abstracting her photographs Piqueras says; “…structures or elements of structures turn into matter, and I focus more and more of my photographs on this aspect, on this aesthetic. In focusing more and more towards this aspect, my photographs lean more and more towards an abstract form.”
FRANCESCA PIQUERAS (b. 1969)Francesca Piqueras’s photographs capture the influence of humanity on the landscape. Her images present the calculated transformation of the environment. From cut jagged, snow-covered mountains in Italy and waves crests at the fore of oil rigs in South America to massive bursts of water swelling through dams in China, Piqueras aims to capture the complex visual testament of man shaping nature.
Piqueras references the Anthropocene, our current geological era, and human behavior’s vast impact on our ecology. The industrial activity captured by Piqueras offers a disparate view of economic pursuits, the extractive nature of these processes, and the resulting aftermath on Earth’s natural topography. Finally, Francesca Piqueras’s body of work serves a purpose. Like a photographic essay, her pictures document the physical transmutation of organic matter for economic purposes and their resultant, discarded forms. Like the stranded husk of a cargo vessel abandoned on the shores of Patagonia, this form, initially made by extracting organic materials from the Earth, is now swallowed by the sea. This natural cycle of construction and decay is central to Piqueras aesthetic inquiry, a poetic quandary on the effects of economic progress and industrialization. Her photographs ultimately deal with the reciprocal nature of our ambition to harness the environment and its ability to transform and break down our attempts to control it.
Francesca Piqueras grew up in a family of artists. Her parents were close to artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Salvador Dali. She would often see them in summer in Cadaqués. In this artistic milieu, she grew up as a solitary and attentive observer. From the age of thirteen, she discovered her passion for making videos and received a camera as a gift. She studied art history and cinema and worked as an editor without abandoning her passion for photography.
It was not until 2007 that she presented her black and white photographs for the first time. Her first series focused on an urban world, magnifying human traces that can often be seen in the city. Marked by Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Il Deserto Rosso,” her interests focused on a different type of tracing: those of our industrial civilization. She switches to color photography and presents new works in 2011, “The Architecture of the Absence,” a series taken on ship dismantling sites in Bangladesh. Later, in 2012 she makes, “The Architecture of Silence,” with photos of scuttled freighters in Mauritania. Today the artist works on several other projects about industrial relics all over the world. Her latest body of work deals with fire and iron smelting. Earth, Water, Air, and Fire are the building blocks of the world, and their transformation has been key to her artistic oeuvre.
“…structures or elements of structures turn into matter, and I focus more and more of my photographs on this aspect, on this aesthetic. In focusing more and more towards this aspect, my photographs lean more and more towards an abstract form.”

PREMIUM LANAI WITH PRIVATE POOL
A Coastal Spa Aesthetic
Nikki Levy Interiors was commissioned to decorate their clients’ new home located on the Intracoastal in Boca Raton. The new home replaced the old structure that was demolished.
By Anita McLeanEach room of this home was wonderfully curated and refined, with the sophisticated coastal spa aesthetic always front of mind. The weaving together of texture, tone, and hues is at the heart of the design of the space. The limewashed walls, linen drapes, grasscloth wallpaper, and woolen rugs mix magnificently well with the hard surfaces of wood, rope, metal, and stone. Each space has an element that nods to the rest of the home but is uniquely singular.
Nikki Levy shares, “Our job is to harness the essence of the client and mold it into a living space that represents them and how they live. From the moment met our client, we connected. Our deep understanding of who they were and how they wanted to live was immediately apparent. Each selection was always met with the same questions: is this consistent with our objective?”
The main interior living space is integrated with the patio and Intracoastal. The wall moldings installed behind the TV unit and extending to the exterior deck marry the exterior to the interior. By embracing the exterior (including the patio furniture, dining space, and swimming pool) into the interior, the living space was increased threefold with a seamless transition.
The kitchen is truly the heart of the home. Here, it is positioned in the center of the home, encouraging family gatherings and easy entertainment. The auxiliary spaces (primary bedroom wing, guest bedroom wing, and office) branch off from it. The oversized island, which has a mix of light taupe quartzite and white quartz, is a perfect centerpiece of the home.
A particular clients’ favorite is the powder bathroom, which is layer upon layer of natural elements, not least being an oversized white stone trough sink with a wooden shelf resting across the top.
Flanking that sink is a burlap rope screen shielding the toilet space from the vanity.
Unique and intentional details were integrated into the home with a custom-designed corduroy wall in the guest wing, which runs across the hallway. Hidden in the grooves of the wall panels are two hidden doors, hiding the pantry and the laundry room. Though these rooms are striking in and of themselves, they did not want to break up this space with doors. The payoff was a zen space, in line with the clients’ vision.
The primary suite is next level, with each piece lovingly selected to create a bedroom that is embracing like a cozy alpaca blanket. At the entry to the suite, a beautifully appointed green wall sets the tone of what’s to come. Upon stepping inside, the rounded molding of the bed, custom-designed using the most exquisitely soft fabric, imbues serenity into the surroundings. In the corner of the room is an original Womb Chair, which had been in the family for many decades, and across from the bed are two beautifully carved dressers.
Beyond the main bedroom are two large boutique-styled closets and an ethereal bathroom, designed for rest and rejuvenation. The clean, organic, textured environment evokes a feeling of calm and serenity.

The epitome of luxury, this 23,625 total square foot estate was designed with a nod to French architecture, blending modern ethos with vintage charm, and impresses with its fortress-like construction. Neutral tones, with accents of blue in the living room decor, play nicely off the azure tones of the sea and surf beyond.
The dining area, elegant with wellappointed premium furnishings, showcases a floor to ceiling window and double French doors, leading out to a covered loggia beyond. Wood beam ceiling treatments keep the space intimate and balanced.
The front entry is a stately custom mahogany door with custom side lights and transom, with a nod to the Moorish style often incorporated on Palm Beach Island. Inside, the grand entry continues with its dramatic statement piece inlay floor. The light interiors and the pillared and arched hallway create an ethereal ethos.
The timeless appeal of the kitchen is highlighted in the marble finishes and premium chef inspired Wolf and Subzero appliances, complete with a walk-in and butler’s pantry and breakfast room.
The two level library is a subtle, yet dramatic room. An onyx floor to ceiling fireplace is one highlight of the space. Walls are clad in neutral wood and a custom chandelier is recessed into the ceiling window to the upper level, where the majority of the library is held. The effect is an artfully elegant, impressive place to read or conduct business.
The Owners’ Suite is light, airy and soothing, with its high ceilings and millwork clad walls providing continuity to the décor. A floor to ceiling inlay treatment anchors the bed. There is additional room in the alcove overlooking the ocean and the anteroom: a private room with ample space for an office or relaxation.
The home is surrounded by flawlessly manicured greens. Flanked by graceful coconut palms, the turquoise-blue water of the pebble tech pool and spa beckons. Beyond, the sparking Atlantic Ocean provides a soothing backdrop to the spacious patios and covered loggias. The sprawling grounds have private beach access.
Enjoy a life well lived, where the sky and sea meet at this luxurious estate. This ultra luxury offering has a stunning combination of the best of all worlds: serene views, premium design and finishes and an appealing floorplan; blending an atmosphere of grand scale entertaining and comfortable beach living. Peace of Mind in Turbulent Times
For the past 30 years, Regina Bedoya has been focused on providing her clients financial peace of mind. Regina specializes in developing personalized strategies that seek to grow and protect assets, while generating a predictable and lifelong income stream during retirement. She has served as President of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), a global association of the world’s leading financial services professionals, and currently serves as a Global Ambassador, presenting financial workshops and seminars around the world.
Have you ever asked yourself why there are those who, no matter what happens around them, remain optimistic about the future? It is as if they have knowledge others do not. We all know people like that, they go through the same challenges everyone else does, but they appear to remain confident, even amid turmoil and certainty.
In my role as a financial coach, I have been observing financial behavior for almost 30 years and have found that there are two important factors that determine a person’s reaction to financial uncertainty.
Firstly, understanding economic history. Those who have a basic awareness of market cycles and the drivers that cause volatility do better than those who do not. Over the past 50 years we have lived through several stock market crashes, most notably in 1987, 2000, and 2008. These and other less drastic declines have had a major impact in the economy. However, in every single case, they eventually rebounded and reached new record highs. As we are often told, past stock market performance is never a guarantee of future results. Nevertheless, history suggests that the market will recover from its current downturn, just as it has in the past.
Secondly, having a solid set of strategies for achieving our financial goals. Those who have taken the time to outline their vision for a financially secure life and have implemented a plan to realize such vision are less anxious than those who have not. Having served my clients for almost three decades I have come to realize that the most coveted state of mind comes when we no longer worry about money. Financial peace of mind is the ultimate reward that comes to those who plan ahead. That is when we can focus on the real things in life, which are not things.
Although no amount of financial planning can assure you a stress-free life, adequate financial strategies that reflect your goals and dreams can significantly enhance the quality of your life. And when life challenges present themselves, and they will, you will be equipped to handle them while others wonder what you know that they wish they knew.
We believe that everyone needs a sound financial plan that will provide peace of mind.
Your financial independence is our business.
RB Financial Advisors is firmly committed to helping clients achieve financial independence through:
• Values-based goal setting
• Application of comprehensive knowledge • Development and implementation of an action plan
• Scheduled monitoring of the plan’s progress

names, products or services referencedDuring the third quarter, Florida’s East Coast economy strengthened and continued to attract new residents, adding to housing demand. While higher mortgage rates constrained some purchasing activity, labor market conditions and demographic growth buoyed sales. We saw pricing trending higher in several counties across the state, even as a national for-sale housing slowdown took root.
For-sale inventory continued to trend higher, reaching nearly 31,000 condos and homes by the end of the quarter. Compared with one quarter ago, condo inventory increased by 7% while single-family home inventory increased by 2%. However, even as more homes became available, newly listed properties came to market at higher pricing. The median price per square foot of an available condo increased by nearly 2% from last quarter. In the single-family home segment, the median price per square foot increased by more than 2%.
A moderate share of sales closed above the list price, highlighting that buyers will compete for well-priced homes in desirable neighborhoods. In the third quarter, 26% of single-family home sales closed at greater than the asking price. While the share of sellers receiving a pricing premium declined, it remains much greater than the same period in 2018 and 2019. In the condo segment, more than 22% of sales were above the list price, higher than the third quarter of 2021.
Through the remainder of the year, the housing market along Florida’s East Coast may be better positioned than other regions of the country. While sales reach a moderate pace, home values should hold. The strength of the regional economy as well as the potential for higher mortgage rates will dictate the direction of the housing market into next year.

Many years ago Jim and Marta Batmasian came to Boca Raton and fell in love with the area. He set up shop in a little office, drove a modest car and lived in a 400 SF apartment with his wife and two children. East Boca Raton was deserted, as everyone wanted real estate to the west where the country clubs were being developed. One by one, Jim and Marta invested in residential and commercial properties. Jim will be the first to tell you he was in the right place at the right time. He bought properly, leveraged himself and bit by bit over the last 51 years has developed an empire. As the largest private real estate owner in Boca Raton, it’s a fair statement.
The Batmasians have always been devout in their faith, giving back to their church and to the Boca Raton community. Their two charities, Changing Lives/Love Boca Outreach Ministries and People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership (PROPEL) are highly impactful local organizations.
People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership (PROPEL) started out 25 years ago, after Jim had a revelation one night. He visited a local housing project the next day and went door to door, meeting with members of the community. He put together weekly gatherings at the local community center, bringing food, education, and different speakers to empower the residents. The children were provided an after-school program. They were picked up from school in a van and taken over to the Christian center where they enjoyed fun, music, games, and tutoring. The Batmasians provided scholarships that allowed the high school graduates to attend a four year college.
Now the early graduates are coming back with law degrees and MBAs. Since its inception, they have started five more PROPEL programs; the goal is 94 more PROPEL programs, to make 100 around the country. Each program has the ability to help 75 – 80 kids per year graduate high school and go to college.
Changing Lives/Love Boca Outreach Ministries has taken 300+ homeless people off the streets and helped them get back as a functioning member of society. Changing
Lives/Love Boca Outreach Ministries provide resources for them to get them clean and sober, housing and employment. While they work for the Batmasian companies, they learn a trade and tools to live life on life’s terms.
Jim’s advice: “Try to find something you enjoy doing – you will not work a day in your life.” He shares, “I love doing the charitable work. It’s what God wants us to do.” Jim and Marta Batmasian are happy to help, and are making the world a better place, one person at a time.
