The refurbished structures [Albert Works and 94 Matilda Sreet] were identified as ‘buildings of interest’ within the CIQ conservation area by Sheffield’s conservation team. Further existing buildings have been restored resulting in 54% of retained structure forming the new workplace. At the core of the refurbishment is a new double height steel structure creating a large open plan workplace. Exposing the steel frame and expressing the co-ordinated junctions to a high visual and functional quality at both the walkway and roof level has ensured that this scheme has re-enhanced the industrial heritage of the buildings, appropriate within the history of Sheffield. Retention and re-use of the existing building redbrick, including that from demolished structures, has been maximised to provide a rich refurbishment of the building stock. The building envelope has been completed along Matilda Street by a new build external wall construction and along the Porter Brook courtyard by modern curtain wall glazing. The new elements of external envelope have been clad in a series of solid and expamet bronzed aluminium cladding added to the upper level extensions. >>

Albert Works is Cartwright Pickard’s recently completed workplace which has converted disused traditional red-brick industrial warehouses with the integration of a new double height steel infill structure to create approximately 1,600sqm GIA // 1,500sqm NIA of modern commercial workspace in the heart of Sheffield’s Cultural Industry Quarter (CIQ) conservation area.

This sympathetically and concisely distinguishes the new from old when reading the building from outside. The use of expamet screens in front of large high-level windows provides solar shading to the internal space whilst enhancing a modern take on the ‘gable’ roofscape common to the area. A landscaped courtyard to the Porter Brook completes the urban block refurbishment development which is enhanced by the restoration of the old industrial chimney. The building form and services have been developed with the M+E contractor to operate under means of natural ventilation with the refurbished perimeter office spaces feeding into the new build double height central office and removing exhaust air through a series of roof cowls at ridge level of the new 3no pitched roofs. The enhanced retention of existing buildings has also advanced the sustainable credentials of the delivered scheme by reducing the amount of embodied energy and waste from construction demolition and subsequent new-build.

The project has very much been developed with Jaywing’s requirements and vision for a HQ office closer to the city centre with a drive for both the building and its occupants to be a sensitive neighbour to the local context, rich in historical heritage. The quality of this project has been delivered from engaged design reviews and workshops with Jaywing, 93FT and JPM to sympathetically maximise the refurbishment potential of this heritage context and its features to create a modern design hub.

March/April Interiors & Interior Design | External Works

May/June The new facades of the houses utilise a combination of dark brickwork and bold yellow aluminium to create a framing system that provides an underlying order to the composition. July/August

Burwell Deakins Architects has completed a conversion of 23 Paradise Street, a Grade II-listed Regency era townhouse dating from 1814. Located within King Edward III’s Rotherhithe Conservation Area and the curtilage of the Scheduled Monument of King Edward III’s Manor House, 23 Paradise Street is one of the few structures within the neighbourhood to survive the Blitz.

The building was originally used as a private dwelling for Sir William Gaitskell, then as a police station for over a century before being converted into offices in the 1960s.

September/October

Burwell Deakins Architects was commissioned by Hollybrook Homes - a family-owned residential and commercial developer - to transform the listed building for residential use in the form of seven apartments, including two duplex apartments at the lower levels.

The new facades of the west wing utilise a combination of dark brickwork and bold yellow aluminium to create a framing system to provide an underlying order to the composition. The dark brick was chosen to allow continuity of texture and material within the context of a confident, contemporary composition.

Roofing & Cladding | Lifts, Stairs & Balustrades

The house’s original interior partitions and features had been removed during the 1970s. Burwell Deakins reintroduced the historic room hierarchies - a freestanding kitchen sits within the new historic setting - and integrated modern services into the new fabric. A new external staircase provides access to the apartments located within the police station annex. Architect Projects

The proportions of the new buildings are intended to complement those of the existing. The two-storey house is expressed as a horizontal element sitting above its brick base and the existing boundary wall. The four-storey house has a vertical emphasis creating a bookend to the existing building on the Cathay Street elevation. Its roofline steps down to create a subservient relationship towards the existing house.

The practice also completed a two-storey, three-bedroom house within the grounds of the original back garden and a four-storey, three-bedroom house abutting the northern gable of the original property where terraced housing was once located.

End of Year Review

In addition to the main features mentioned there will also be a section in every edition covering:

The material palette and detailing was agreed with the design and conservation officer by way of the construction of 1:1 mock-ups of critical building details. The black bricks were manufactured using the traditional soft-mud process that produces a non-uniform texture and the appearance of handmade or antique brick. This was desirable to allow continuity of texture between the old and new buildings and provides a textural contrast against the smooth surfaces of aluminium and glass. The bold yellow colour was selected to clearly articulate and pick out the confident, contemporary composition against the context of the dark brickwork and the existing building.

We designed the scale and sitting of the newbuild elements to be sympathetic to the original building while creating a subservient yet confident relationship between the two contrast structures. We are delighted to complete this conservation project, which truly embraces London’s old and new wealthy building stock. Nicholas Burwell, director at Burwell Deakins Architects
