Modular construction specialists McAvoy awarded BRE BIM certification first The McAvoy Group who specialise in modular buildings for the health, education and hospitality sectors have become the first UK offsite construction company to achieve BRE BIM Level 2 business systems certification. This means that McAvoy can demonstrate compliance with the UK Government’s new BIM Level 2 requirement for centrally procured construction projects which came into effect yesterday (4 April 2016). McAvoy’s Design Manager, David Clark said ‘By harnessing BIM we can ensure all aspects of design and planning is shared and all team members are working to the same standards. Our specialist design teams have been using BIM to develop virtual models of our building spaces and construction processes thereby providing our clients with a full understanding of their building concept as the design progresses for several years.’
With two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Northern Ireland, McAvoy has delivered over 3 million m2 of modular accommodation for the private and public sectors. It also considers the ability of the business to meet the requirements of an employer to implement BIM on a project.
Construction worker at Queensferry Crossing is killed by crane A construction worker has died on the site of the new Queensferry Crossing after reportedly being struck by part of a crane. Another worker suffered minor injuries in the incident on the north tower deck at about midday on Thursday. The new £1.4bn road bridge is set to open in December and will carry the M90 across the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry, near Edinburgh, and North Queensferry, in Fife. Work on the site has stopped while the death of the 60-year-old man is investigated. The construction workers’ union Ucatt said it is
understood the man was struck by the boom of a crane he was directing.

Union leaders said the death on Workers’ Memorial Day was a poignant reminder of the dangers in the construction industry. Work on the bridge started in 2011 and the death is thought to be the first at the site. A spokesman for the project said: “We are deeply saddened to have to confirm there was an incident just before noon on April 28 on the Queensferry Crossing’s north tower in which a person has lost his life. “One other person has been taken to hospital. All activity has been stopped at the north tower.
Ucatt regional secretary Harry Frew said: “Ucatt sends its sincere condolences to the family of the worker who has suffered this tragic accident. It is impossible to imagine how they must be feeling. “Ucatt will be doing everything it can to find out how and why this accident occurred, and to ensure that similar fatalities are prevented in the future.” A Police Scotland spokesman said the force received a call at about 12.20pm on Thursday. “Sadly, the man was pronounced dead a short time later. Another man on the bridge also sustained minor injuries. Inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this matter are ongoing.” Pat Rafferty, Unite’s Scottish secretary, said: “Our thoughts are with the deceased’s family to whom we offer our profound condolences. Once again, a loved one has gone to work and will not return home. That is hard to swallow any day but on today of all days, on International Workers’ Memorial Day, when we remember those who have perished at work, this loss is especially poignant. “We call on the Scottish Health and Safety Executive to thoroughly investigate what has happened here.”

becoming the second “hub” site in Edinburgh. The transformation will include modernising and extending the former Edinburgh office building by adding a two storey steel frame extension at roof level, increasing the property’s total floor area by circa 4,900sq ft.

Taemar Ltd win Government multi-million pound construction targets impossible due to a Lidl contract lack of ‘feet on the ground’
A lack of manpower is the biggest concern for the Government in meeting construction targets, according to construction and rail recruitment specialists, One Way. This comes in light of a recent survey from property consultants McBains Cooper which revealed that just three in ten of England’s housebuilders believe the Government’s target of building one million homes by 2020 can be achieved. The report listed the biggest barriers as land shortages, the slow granting of planning permission, a lack of finance and skills shortages.
Taemar Ltd have secured a multi-million pound contract to build a new Lidl store in Blyth. The contract was won following a competitive tender process to build a new branch of the popular grocery store chain. The supermarket will replace an exisiting outlet on the former Bates Colliery site on Cowpen Road in Blyth, with a building that will be double the size on additional land at the site. The new store layout will be 2,470 sq m including a sales area of 1,424 sq m, and will include 134 car parking spaces, seven parking spaces for those with disabled badges, as well as dedicated parent-and-child parking. The “Lidl of the Future” will have a cutting edge design, and will also work towards reducing its environmental impact by reducing the CO2 emission rate by over 20% when compared with a building of the same type, size and use; that is circa 40 tons of CO2 a year, which is equivalent to flying a jumbo jet over 700 miles. Natural daylight entering the building will be maximised, with a fully glass front façade, whilst sensor controlled exterior sun blinds automatically operate to mitigate the effects of unwanted heat from solar gain. Throughout the construction process, up to 200 jobs in construction will be created, and 10 new jobs will be created at the Lidl branch on completion.
However, the firm has argued that the biggest problem facing the Government’s target is the lack of ‘feet on the ground’. One Way has highlighted that these targets should have included greater consideration of the manpower requirements which will have a significant impact on productivity. Paul Payne, managing director at One Way, comments: “While I agree with the general concerns raised in the report from McBains Cooper, I was concerned that the issue of manpower wasn’t at the forefront of the discussion. There are numerous challenges facing the completion of these targets, but many can be addressed. While there are incentives in place to address the skills shortage – such as the upcoming apprenticeship levy – the immediate lack of feet on the ground should be the number one issue to address. Amendments to the planning permission process can be – and in some instances are already being – made and more investment can be sought, but all of this will be in vain without the people in place to fulfil projects.” “While there’s no immediate solution to this, the fact that the Government target has been set without due consideration as to the people needed to achieve it is a concern. Yes there is a need for more homes to be built, but setting unrealistic targets isn’t a solution for an industry which has long felt the impact of a talent brain drain.”

Throughout the construction process, up to 200 jobs in construction will be created, and 10 new jobs will be created at the Lidl branch on completion. The existing façade will be cleaned and repaired and curtain walling elements installed to enhance the building’s aesthetics and improve thermal performance. The Market Street Project will create a new four star 98 room boutique hotel, which will transform a key under-used site located next to Craig’s Close, which has been vacant for more than 50 years. Works on what is currently a site gap will include the removal of the current building,
followed by associated works, before construction can commence on the seven storey, steel framed building, which will be clad in Natural Sandstone, Granite Rainscreen, and Zinc Wall, which will house the hotel and transform the cityscape. Hird buys biggest ever Maeda mini crane - number 00001 Mini crane and glass lifting hire specialist Hird has become the first company in the world to buy the largest spider crane ever manufactured by Maeda. Hird had snapped up the first MC-815 straight off the production line in Japan. The machine is ideal for steel erection, glass and curtain wall installation, building maintenance and machinery moving. With smart design, expert delivery and proven know-how, cost reductions of up to 20% can be achieved whilst delivering virtually airtight, high-performing buildings with low lifetime running costs. The requirement for low cost, ultramodern and virtually airtight cold store and warehouse solutions has seen a step change in design and building practice with insulated composite panels and single envelope construction fast outpacing traditional building methods. With rising energy costs and ever tougher efficiency targets it’s hardly surprising. Aldi’s new 52,000m2 distribution centre at Goldthorpe, designed to operate 24/7, 365 days a year is a good example. With air leakage measured at below 0.1m3 per hour, the building far exceeds 0.5m3 design guidelines set by the International Association for Cold Storage Construction. Environmental factors like these significantly improve carbon reporting too. So there is certainly no stopping the popularity of composite insulated panels and single envelope construction in a range of commercial and industrial applications is only likely to increase. Technical and insulation qualities are improving too - witness Kingspan’s new IPN-QuadCore technology offering yet more thermal gains. But installation, design and manufacturing expertise remain crucial and choosing the right construction partner should be a key priority.

CPA cast doubt on latest ONS construction industry output figures The Construction Products Association has questioned the latest Office of National Statistics construction output figures, suggesting they may be subject to upward revision at a later date ONS report says construction industry growth experiences biggest fall in three years March saw output in the construction industry fall by 3.6% compared to February according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics. The report did contain some some positive news, however, in terms of new house building with the ONS reporting an increase of 4.8% in comparison with the fourth quarter of last year. There were increases seen in both public and private new housing of 4.2% and 4.9% respectively. Total housing was up 3.4% compared to the same period in 2015. The ONS figures, however, would appear to contradict other recent reports on construction activity in 2016 and the CPA has suggested that the data may need to be revisited, as has happened in previous years. Sharing the same secretariat, these organisations are now seeking a similarly committed individual as a Senior Administrator to succeed their long serving Secretary who has recently announced his intention to retire. The position is for a self employed, self motivated and dynamic individual and the successful candidate will be rewarded with an initial three year contract with both organisations. The combined contract fees will range from £40-£50K, commensurate with experience and ability as the LCA and FTMRC look to further build upon the secure foundations which have been laid and developed for their members.

Foundations for success: the future looks bright for family businesses in the construction sector t The construction sector is leading the way,
with family firms making up almost one in five of all organisations within the industry t UK family businesses celebrate another successful year with employment and turnover up t Half of the UK’s family businesses plan to grow their organisations over the next few years and will invest in the skills of their staff to do so Family firms across the UK are setting their sights on expansion following another hugely successful year for the sector. New research by Oxford Economics for the Institute for Family Business (IFB) Research Foundation reveals the vast contribution family firms make to the UK economy – employing over 11.9 million people and making up 87 percent of all private sector firms in the UK. There are now more than 800,000 family firms in the construction sector, making up almost one in five of all businesses in the industry. Family businesses also account for 94 per cent of all private sector firms in the construction sector one of the highest concentrations in the UK. Kate Woods, a spokeswoman from construction family business, Osborne, added: “Osborne echos the amazing and timely achievements of family businesses and this year we are excited to
celebrate our 50th anniversary. We rebranded to a vibrant magenta in 2014 and we are committed to finding customer led solutions, listening to our customers and working in collaboration with their needs.”
Since 2013 family businesses have increased employment by six per cent and turnover has also seen a strong rise, increasing by two per cent to reach £1.3 trillion. In addition, family firms paid £125 billion in taxes and contributed over a quarter (26%) of the UK’s entire GDP. Speaking about the new findings, Peter Armitage, Chairman of the IFB, said: “The report sheds light on the sheer size and scale of the family business community. It’s an important reminder of how vital family-run firms are to the UK – serving as the backbone of our economy, with family firms making a phenomenal contribution across all sectors, industries and regions. “Family businesses have always been at the very heart of the UK economy and based on the
steady rise in their recruitment and turnover, it is clear they are here to stay. It’s encouraging to see family firms with such a buoyant attitude towards their future expansion - almost half of family SMEs expect to grow over the next two to three years.” Growth and expansion is a top priority for many SME family firms with just under half (49%) stating they aim to grow over the next twelve months. Looking to how they will turn this ambition into reality just under a half of firms (43%) say they will invest in improving the skills of their workforce to support growth, with a third (33%) planning to boost productivity through investing in new machinery and premises. Looking beyond their traditional activities to diversify their business and customer base, 42% of family firms are planning to move into new markets and 37% are developing and launching new products and services.

Over 3000 guests from construction sites of all different sizes attended award ceremonies held from 11-29 April in Edinburgh, London and Manchester. This year’s National Site Awards applied to registered sites that completed in 2015. Projects registered with the Scheme must demonstrate an appreciation of the

impact of their work on the community, the environment and their workforce, and this year was no exception with around 9000 sites eligible to win a National Site Award. The Scheme held 13 ceremonies and presented a total of 932 National Site Awards. In addition to the four Most Considerate Site awards, there were 430 Bronze, 293 Silver and 173 Gold and 32 Most Considerate Site Runners-Up. Edward Hardy, Chief Executive of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, said: “Congratulations to each and every site receiving a 2016 National Site Award. Construction industry trainees earning dud qualifications despite skills shortage Information from an FOI request has revealed that the majority of the 167,000 young people studying for construction qualifications will be ignored - unless they have an NVQ Tens of thousands of trainees wanting to work in the building trade are leaving with dud qualifications, new research shows. Despite a shortage of skilled workers only 18,000 people secured an apprenticeship in the construction industry last year. A Freedom of Information request by the UCATT union found 167,000 young people started a training course in construction but the vast majority will not get the qualification needed to work on site. UCATT said the Government was effectively “pouring money down the drain” by funding dead end courses. To work on site you need an NVQ qualification that is best achieved through studying an apprenticeships. But the analysis found only 12% the trainees on construction courses secure an apprenticeship. Of the 167,970 students who started a construction course in 2014/15, 136,960

UCATT Acting General Secretary, Brian Rye, said: “I’m horrified by these figures. What a waste of talent and Government money, to take these young people through a course and then have
them ignored by the construction industry. “We have a well-documented skills shortage in the construction industry and we have major constructors failing to take on apprentices. “And yet hundreds of thousands of young people who want to work in the industry are just left on the scrap heap.” Mr Rye added: “This is a calamity for the British construction industry. Young people are being thrown to the wind. Hundreds of thousands of talented, enthusiastic young people are having their career hopes dashed by a complacent and self-serving industry. Meanwhile, the Government will announce plans to reform Britain’s universities on Monday. These will include allowing more colleges to apply for university status. Universities will also have to publish details of applications broken down by ethnicity, gender and socio-economic background. The Department of Business said this would “shine a spotlight” on institutions which fail to recruit students from under privileged and black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Being an accredited and subsequently registered WIRS provider gives companies the opportunity to tender for and undertake installation and commissioning of water mains and services, in keeping with their accreditation level, with the Water Utilities in whose area the work is being done. Any WIRS provider contracting to undertake contestable work (as defined by OFWAT and detailed in the National Self-Lay Code of Practice) can be accredited, and registered under this scheme. The scheme is recognised by all Water Utilities within England and Wales and enables WIRS Providers to tender for, and if successful, carry out design, installation and commissioning of water mains and services. The Water Industry Regulation Scheme is operated by the Lloyds Register Group and is used to independently assess service providers looking to work within the water industry. Lloyd’s Register EMEA is a worldwide accreditation and inspection body that has been chosen as the Scheme Operator for WIRS. The controlling body of WIRS is the WIRS Advisory Panel (WIRSAP), which consists of representatives from WUs and WIRS providers
and has input from OFWAT, Energy and Utility Skills and Lloyd’s Register. The requirements of the scheme are discussed and agreed upon when the group meets every four months. There are three main categories of accreditation available: Project Management: for those WIRS providers who don’t have construction site staff but want to engage in contract negotiations with clients for connection work and play a role in the adoption agreement with the relevant Water Utility. Design: for those WIRS providers who want to carry out the design aspect of the installation of the infrastructure. Construction: This is divided into seven sectors that include:
t Work on development sites with mains up to 355mm diameter
t Off-site work with pipe diameters over 355mm diameter
t Service laying on development sites (where
mainlaying is not done by the WIRS Provider laying services and service diameters do not exceed 63mm) t Making routine in-line mains connections (only allowable when a mainlaying scope is already held) t Construction of routine and non-routine under pressure mains branch connections (Scotland Only) t Permanent disconnections (Scotland Only) t Meter installation maintenance activities (Scotland Only) t The assessment for accreditation is split into two parts – partial and full. With the partial element of the process, the WIRS provider must be verified to ensure it has the requisite management systems, method

The partial accreditation allows for contractors who don’t have a track record in the water industry to gain a foothold as a WIRS provider in the water industry. If the company can demonstrate their competencies, they could be awarded partial accreditation and be able to bid for work. Once successful, the company would be required to contact Lloyd’s Register who would undertake a site assessment on their first contract to enable them to gain full accreditation. Without the partial accreditation and subsequent registration phase it would be difficult for contractors with no water track record to enter the contestable market. For a company to achieve full accreditation, it must be verified that it has work control, contract change control, HR, Procurement and storage systems available to make sure work processes are consistent and competency is maintained both on site and in office-based support services. Full accreditation can only be attained upon the company being awarded work and undertaking the full scope of works for which accreditation was sought. An assessor will visit one or more of the sites where work is being performed to assess the competency and methods of work applied, to make sure consistency with the competency and method statements reviewed under the partial assessment process. The costs of accreditation are based on a set of standard charges and an information sheet outlining costs is available on the Lloyds Register WIRS website. The cost will depend on the scopes requested and the size of the WIRS provider.

Effectively Controlling Light and Glare
Control of glare is vital in the working environment for productive and comfortable working. There are regulatory requirements for preventing screen glare and providing glare control is a requirement recognised in BREEAM. The British Blind & Shutter Association (BBSA) has developed a short information video to highlight the design objectives that need to be considered for effectively controlling light and glare. Blacking out the glazing is obviously not the answer but neither is simply specifying the openness of the material. For a holistic approach to biophilic design the video is essential viewing.

Kemper System answers towering challenge in New York Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid applied membrane has been used as the waterproofing system for the tallest building in the Western hemisphere: the 1,776ft One World Trade Center in New York. Rising to 104 storeys and constructed in a $3.9 billion project lasting more than a decade, the One World Trade Center, also known as the “Freedom Tower” is the Centerpiece of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex constructed on the site of ground zero. The 1800m2 roof is not only extremely high, but also features extensive exposed steel details and up to 400 penetrations, including the spire, with no area larger than 10ft x 10ft without some form of penetration; all of which had to be sealed effectively using a system that could be applied by a small team, with restricted access and without the use of hot works or heavy equipment. Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR liquidapplied resin membrane was specified for the main roof and the louvre areas on lower floors. The penetrations, drains, curbs and perimeters were all protected and then overlapped by the membrane in the larger expanse to provide a seamless, durable and reinforced waterproofing membrane across the entire roof. As the coldapplied resin bonds directly to the substrate it is particularly effective in coping with wind-uplift

In line with US Building Code requirements, the system was completed with a white reflective coating to reduce the urban heat island effect. Sustainability Kemperol 2K-PUR resin system is 80 percent from renewable materials, which fit with the overall design goals for the project. Nearly 75 percent of 1 WTC is made from recycled or eco-friendly building materials, and the building’s green design earned LEED Gold Certification.

Construction in March gains momentum after a slow start to the year After a subdued start for construction in 2016 the industry picked up the pace in March, with £6.1 billion worth of construction contracts delivered. This is the highest figure of the year to date which was particularly influenced by the continued strength of the residential sector. According to the latest Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, total construction contract value figures for March were almost 10% higher than in February. Alongside the improving figures, residential construction contract values were worth £1.9 billion in March, 31 per cent of the total amount of contracts for the month (please see figure 1.1). The positive news from March continues as the commercial & retail sector increased its monthly contract value by 25 per cent and Infrastructure by 30 per cent, which is an extra £500 million of contract value compared to February. Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: “it’s encouraging to see the industry pick up the pace after a lacklustre start to the year. Housebuilding once again continues to storm ahead in the industry, as housebuilders continue to try to keep pace with the demand and appetite for new housing.”

Lining Systems - The importance of Fabrication By R D Mantle FIoR Managing Director of Ampteam Limited Sometimes a spark of clarity will result in a “eureka” or “light bulb” moment and an idea will evolve into a unique product. I don’t know how many people get such moments but it is certainly not uncommon as it is one of the things that makes us Human, our inventiveness! Such was the case many years ago when the idea for the Unifold® hinge was born, only I called it my “beer mat” moment, because at the time I was bending a beer mat and you can probably guess where I was when I was doing it! Since those early days of trials, tests, disappointments and triumphs, Unifold® has become a complete system and this has been achieved through an evolutionary process more by necessity than design, most often encountering a problem on site and returning to the factory and solving it in the workshop, employing fabrication techniques and whatever tests were necessary to prove the solution. Most of the fabricated components which are vital to the Unifold® system were designed in the early years of product development and we had many “light bulb” moments in that process along the way, such as the patented Clip Joint used for difficult and narrow applications. We learned the use of our hinge principle in so many ways to aid the fabrication process and to produce components which would be impossible any other way. From the outset this produced fabricated components fit for purpose and of exemplary quality. We also realised early on that site working inside a gutter cavity could often be very difficult and to expect site operatives to “cut and carve” and then effectively seal a lining system was too much to ask, so our intention was and has been throughout for us to provide all fabrication, factory manufactured with simple gutter joints so the installation is constant and repetitive and as easy as we can make it. We became a “single product company” concentrating on providing product and service excellence. The system has proven to be entirely versatile with the ability to correctly line almost any existing system whether it is a level gutter or laid to falls. Some of our fabricated components are corners, tees, side boxes, sumps and expansion joints and these are just a few! In fact there are solutions for any circumstances however difficult or complex. For quite some time now we have insisted that anyone who installs Unifold must be trained to install the system. This is to ensure conformity and continuity of the system quality on site. This supports our 25 year comprehensive guarantee that includes the installation as well as quality of materials and manufacture. An industry first in gutter

This first photograph shows part of a fabrication that was probably one of our most complex and certainly one of our largest.
And this is the complete fabrication in situ, 18 pieces in total! And five gutters entering a single space! Not easy, and not a common occurrence, but if you are going to “set your stall” to line gutters then the ability to cope with such circumstances is elemental and vital. This is a two piece corner detail with an intruding pier section.
This photograph shows a sump unit with two coned outlets and demonstrating that each end is a gutter section for ease of installation. Can you imagine attempting the manufacture of this on site?
The message is clear, any lining system must be able to cope with whatever the site conditions dictate and if a 25 year guarantee is offered then this must warranty that the system is going to work, without leaking, for that period of time and beyond.
