Exploring the Offsite Construction Opportunities in the South West It is no secret that the UK industry faces a severe shortage in traditional construction skills - this pressure comes at a time when the average age of the construction workforce is increasing, creating a potential time bomb that will play out over the next 10 years as the labour force shrinks by an estimated 25%. There is a smart solution - the industry needs to embrace offsite forms of construction to increase the attractiveness of the sector to new entrants and to improve productivity to increase output with less labour. Looking to the future new roles are emerging such as Automation Technician, DFM Process Manager with digital design skills, together with hybrid manufacturing roles, for example a Digital Construction Manager, who will take ownership of the product end to end. At Explore Offsite South West, taking place on 11 July at Sandy Park, Exeter - Catherine Bullough, Programme Manager for the National Skills Academy for Construction at CITB will be discussing the offsite skills required to meet the future needs of the industry and will be providing an update on the action plan for qualifications and training support. The official figures released at the end of 2017 show that the number of new homes in England increased by more than 217,000 in 2016. This signifies the highest level of net additions since the recession and it is the first time in almost a decade that the 200,000 milestone has been reached. Explore Offsite South West does not claim to have all the answers but can offer in-depth insight from those who are shaping the future of the offsite construction industry. Learnings can be gained from in-depth case studies from the UK’s largest infrastructure project - Hinkley Point C, together with insight on using structural insulated panel technology to deliver school buildings at speed. As well as gaining intelligence and learnings - knowledge transfer is a key part of the conference programme, as will be clearly demonstrated in Alan Tate’s presentation on a Legal Guide for Offsite Manufacturing.

Explore Offsite South West - 11 July, Sandy Park, Exeter The combined conference and exhibition will bring together a range of offsite technology supply chain specialists and industry leaders to discuss the uptake of offsite construction in the South West region. The event will focus on the key themes of offsite technology options, regional supply chain resources, project case studies and the opportunities within the offsite sector. The Explore Offsite event is organised by Constructing Excellence South West, the single organisation charged with driving the change agenda in construction within the south west region which is part of the Constructing

‘Access all areas’ - ECEX launches free guide to safe site access A free, comprehensive guide to safe and effective site access has been published by leading multi-specialist engineering contractor ECEX. The illustrated guide - ‘Access all areas’ - explains how access is a critical contributory factor to the safety of building services engineers and maintenance teams who install and service plant on roofs and other hard-to-get-at areas. ‘Access all areas’ describes how to assess the risk and select appropriate access equipment as well as outlining relevant legislation and explaining EN 1090, a mandatory standard for any organisation that designs and/or manufactures structural/construction steel or aluminium components such as pipework step-overs, platforms and railings, walkways and gantries, and access staircases. It also contains a comprehensive contact list of useful organisations. John Grenville, managing director of ECEX, said: “ECEX has a wealth of experience and expertise in creating effective access solutions developed over many years, so we are well placed to offer the best help and advice available on the topic.” He added: “ECEX employs a team of highly skilled metalwork fabricators operating from its workshop in Newbury who

RESPONSE TO HACKITT REVIEW Iain McIlwee, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) said: “The British Woodworking Federation, whose members manufacture around three million fire doors in the UK each year, welcomes the recommendations of the highly anticipated Hackitt Review and urge Government to crack on with embracing these recommendations as soon as practicable. Tightening and clarifying regulation, enforcement, responsibility and control processes is long overdue. The report recognises the importance of Duty Holders, Competence, the need to align Construction Design and Management Regulations and establishing a Joint Competent Authority to manage and enforce.

‘Nothing stopping us to change the culture of building industry now’ Local Authority Building Control – the body that represents all local authority building control teams in England and Wales – is calling for the building industry to work together to change its culture. The call came at a recent Fire Safety seminar, organised by RIBA by the not-for-profit organisation’s Commercial Director, Martin Taylor. Martin has been closely involved in the Hackitt Review sitting on two working groups – the design, construction and refurbishment group and the crucial ‘Golden Thread’ group. This group focussed on ways of preserving the original design intent throughout complex and high risk building projects and making sure any changes go through a formal review process. Martin explained, “Dame Judith Hackitt has challenged the industry to change following the dreadful Grenfell Tower fire. Our view is all parts must come together to change the culture now and not wait for any changes to the regulations and guidance. “For too long there has been a race to the bottom where building clients have been looking for the least interference at the least cost. And we all know where that race ended up. A more cooperative outlook with competition over quality and competencies rather than just price will benefit the industry as a whole and lead to better, safer and more compliant building projects.”

We also welcome the guidance note issued yesterday by MHCLG that encouraged that there is an emphatic endorsement that UCAS accredited third party certification of product and competence of installation, inspection is picked up as a priority – this is fundamental to safety reform. This is again mirrored by Dame Judith and hopefully this guidance is evidence that Government does intend to act fast. The report is not the end, it is the beginning and we need the dots to be joined up and good guidance is embraced by robust regulation. We do still have some reservations with the announcements from the Prime Minister yesterday, Government is finally grasping the fact that urgency is required, but there still seems to be little recognition of the full scale of the problem. We know that cladding was a major reason the Grenfell fire turned from a potentially minor incident into a tragedy, but the cladding and external envelope is only part of the story. The condition of the fire doors and the specifically the performance of the Manse Masterdor fire doors have also been highlighted as a major concern and some more detailed advice has been issued, but, with our experience it is just the tip of the iceberg, the question remains how do we set about and fund the fixing years of fire safety neglect? Setting aside the issue of the Manse Masterdor fire doors, referenced, there remain a plethora of other challenges. For years, weak and fragmented legislation, combined with poor skills and control in construction and maintenance have undermined installation and failed to address inadequacies in inspection and maintenance regimes. We believe that there is a very deeprooted problem and that many fire doors would struggle to halt the spread of major fire. It is now vitally important that we reset the clock! We believe that, alongside a greater focus on fire safety and fire doors, a new financial mechanism is needed to enable local authorities, housing associations and others to access the funds required to upgrade safety recommendations that will emanate from the Risk Assessments that are being demanded. It is essential that we see the Treasury making an allocation for this too. We are campaigning for the creation of a Building Safety Fund (similar to the Pension Protection Fund), which will offer a solution to the current predicament of Housing Associations and Local Authorities by providing them with a scheme to apply to for compensation to support these costs. The Fund would alleviate concerns while helping consolidate legal matters through a centrally controlled process. Although the cost of this may need to be born through insurance premiums, when we consider the true and ongoing cost of Grenfell, we cannot let it be ignored.”

Go Develop

Innovating 100% funding for professional housebuilders

Jason Tebb, Chief Operating Officer for Go Develop

Chief Operating Officer Jason Tebb reveals how Go Develop’s joint venture partnerships are revolutionising SME housebuilding across the country. Tell us about the company and what you do… Go Develop provide 100% full joint venture funding that covers land, build, stamp duty and project costs. That means everything is funded without a penny in from the developer or housebuilder. We know that good developers often have more opportunities than they have funds. That’s where we come in. Working in partnership, we provide a close, aligned relationship with the assurance that once the project is sold, the developer receives the lion’s share of the profits. Right now, we have over 1,100 homes being built nationwide with our joint venture partners.

We are not financers with a tick box mentality, we are experts in property. Our decisions are made by a proactive and helpful team, with a wealth of build and development experience – we’ve done it ourselves and understand the challenges and opportunities our clients are facing. We’ve a superb track record of going the extra mile and stick to what we say.

What are your criteria?

How does it work?

It couldn’t be more simple…

As we have no shareholders or external board members, we can make decisions flexibly and fast. A decision is made within 48 hours and a deal can be completed in 30 days, cutting through the red tape and delays developers may be used to. There is no outlay with us, and no debt servicing, as all costs are rolled up until the end of the project. We create an ‘SPV’ to hold the project until it’s build and sold. Then a contract is made to ensure the developer gains the greatest profit share and controls the build. We attend site progress meetings and our monitoring surveyors will deal with monthly valuations and contractor payments.

• We focus on new build opportunities, apartments and value family housing. • We work nationwide but tend to prefer outside the M25. • Our developer partners must have full planning permission in place and some property experience is desired. • The project is up to 24 months duration with a GDV of £2-£15million. • There needs to be a margin of 25% on GDV pre-finance.

Why do developers love to work with you? Obviously, 100% certain funding is music to any developer’s ears, but our partners tell us they love that we’re the ones burning the midnight oil and doing all the admin, VAT returns, valuations and chasing of solicitors and surveyors saving them a huge amount of time and cost. They get their Sunday evenings back! At Go Develop, there’s a whole team of dedicated property experts from marketing to accounting to draw on if you’re a developer wanting to focus on the actual build.

What should I do if I’ve a project for Go Develop? Please get in touch, either by calling 020 8974 4705 or emailing joinus@go-develop. co.uk. The first step is to send us your development appraisal and cash flow for the project, along with the full planning decision notice. We will review and advise, usually within 24 hours, whether the project is suitable. If it is, we draw up Heads of Terms and formally instruct legals, valuations and professional services. Alternatively, you might consider becoming an introducer for us. With industry leading referral fees, we place great emphasis on building and rewarding relationships with our introducers. Working in partnership, you’ll find we keep things simple and are known to be easy to do business with. It’s something we pride ourselves on and our returning partners are testament to that. We love giving references – ask us! For more information visit go-develop.co.uk

Windermere Terrace - Case Study

Culmore Development

Silvermere Development

More than 100% funding for 44 homes in Sefton Park, Liverpool Nestled along the edge of the Grade II Listed Princes Park within the desirable Sefton Park suburb of Liverpool is Windermere Terrace, Go Develop’s latest joint venture project. Our Partner, an established developer who has worked with us previously, returned to us with an exciting development proposal requiring 100% full funding for land, build, stamp duty and soft costs. This remarkable site has 3 distinct developments – Culmore, Silvermere and Edenhurst all with their own unique style. Edenhurst is located within the buildings of a Victorian school and offers a range of luxury one and two bed apartments set over three floors. A former science wing has been renovated to form Culmore and a converted theatre will be transformed into Silvermere. All will have the highest specification and top of the range fixture and fittings throughout. In total, planning permission allows for 44 one and two bedroom apartments many benefiting from the lakeside views. They are proving to be highly attractive to young professionals and downsizers. At Go Develop, property is in our DNA. We fully understood that our developer partner had a vision for this development and we ensured that this fantastic opportunity wasn’t held back by red-tape or financial delays. Like 92% of Go Develop partners, our

developer returned to us knowing that we would deliver on time and in full…

“Go Develop live up to their name once again, fast, flexible funds so that you can ‘go and develop’!” A new ‘SPV’ was set up the same day for our partner, to hold the project until it is finished and sold, with a profit share contract for both parties. On completion and sale of the property the profit will be divided with our developer getting the lion’s share. In this scheme, our developer made use of our 100% funding to the total of £5,502,823 over 15 months. We were flexible when some design changes pushed timelines back and unlike many traditional lenders or funders, we didn’t abandon a project half way down the road. We’re in it for the long

haul to support our partners at every step. As a principal funder, investing our own money nationwide, we can and are known for being flexible for the right opportunities and making things happen; fast. The best part is that we understand that our developer’s weekends are precious and offer so much more than 100% funding. We take on the strain and drain of admin, VAT returns, valuations and the chasing of solicitors and surveyors saving huge time and cost. If you add in our experience of legals, surveying, marketing and accounting, our developers find they really do benefit from a complete one stop shop package that can help from the initial concept to the exit strategy. Go Develop currently have over 1,100 units under construction, you can discover more case studies on our website www.go-develop.co.uk

CONSTRUCTION WORK IS UNDERWAY ON BOUTIQUE EDINBURGH HOTEL Development company S Harrison has appointed Edinburgh based Sharkey as the principal contractor to transform a historic Edinburgh building into the latest boutique hotel for Malmaison Hotel du Vin Group. Grade A listed Buchan House is located in a prime position on St Andrew Square in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. The work will transform it into a 72 bedroom Malmaison hotel complete with Chez Mal Bar and Brasserie. York based S Harrison has also now signed a forward funding agreement, with an end value in excess of £25million, with a FTSE 100 pension fund, to finance the development. S Harrison was advised by the Edinburgh offices of Ryden and Brodies. The fund was represented by CMS, D2 Property and Christie & Co.

This is a high profile hotel development in a historic building at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, which makes it a superb project to be working on. an exceptional hotel in a highly sought after location. Sharkey has a strong track record working on prestigious hotel projects throughout the UK and an unrivalled local knowedge of the Edinburgh market, which made them the ideal contractor for this development. “Securing a forward funding agreement with a major UK pension fund is also a huge coup and speaks volumes about the level of confidence that currently surrounds Edinburgh’s property market as a whole.”

When the 72-bedroom hotel opens in 2019, it will be the second Malmaison in the City and will create approximately 50 new jobs. The building’s period features will be restored and Malmaison will inject its distinctive, stylish aesthetic to make Buchan House a unique hotel offering within the famous Georgian architecture of the New Town.

Sharkey’s managing director, Billy Harrison, added: “This is a high profile hotel development in a historic building at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, which makes it a superb project to be working on. In recent years we’ve successfully completed a vast range of hotel projects throughout the UK, for many leading names in the industry, and will utilise all our sector experience to create a stunning, landmark hotel, that Edinburgh can be proud of.”

S Harrison’s development director, David Clancy, said: “We’re delighted that work is underway to restore this historic building and give it a new lease of life as

The new hotel will complement the popular Malmaison Edinburgh Leith, which famously occupies the site of a former “house of ill-repute”, and was the first

ever Malmaison to open in 1994. It also marks the latest development in a period of significant growth and investment for the brand. This includes plans to introduce Malmaison to York and Bournemouth, as well as the continued roll-out of its contemporary Chez Mal bar and brasserie and its innovative Work + Play meeting and events concept. This project is S Harrison’s second development for the Malmaison Hotel du Vin Group, having recently handed over a luxurious Hotel du Vin in Stratford-uponAvon. The work has seen two Grade II listed Georgian townhouses transformed into a stunning 46-bedroom hotel, close to the centre of Shakespeare’s hometown. S Harrison has built a strong and growing presence in Edinburgh following its successful £23 million redevelopment of a site on Leith Walk in 2016. The site was formerly part of Edinburgh’s original Botanic Gardens and was transformed into a 240-bedroom, student accommodation scheme. S Harrison has also recently bought two other sites in the Leith and Haymarket areas of the city and continues to explore other opportunities in the area.

Company News

Industry innovator drives forward A business that supplies innovative hoarding solutions for major infrastructure and construction projects has posted record trading figures. Plasloc was founded by Steve Matthews, who following a career in construction identified a gap in the market for a costeffective, sustainable, and innovative hoardings solution. He founded the business in 2007, with it officially launching in 2011. Its latest set of accounts show that revenue is up 30%. A flurry of new contract wins and growth amongst its existing client base is the reason for the positive results. Plasloc’s customer list is a who’s who of the leading retail, business and construction brands and in the last year it has delivered complex projects for Channel 4, St Thomas’s hospital; and supplied safe hoarding solutions at the University of Cambridge as part of a £1bn development. Steve Matthews comments: “Having worked in the construction industry for my entire life I know the impact that innovative products can have, especially when it is backed up with excellent service. The last twelve months have been very good for the business and we’re especially proud to have worked on so many complex projects – that have tested the team here and made a measurable positive impact to the customer.” Steve also says that he feels the construction industry is holding up – despite challenging political headwinds. He comments: “Who knows what is happening regarding Brexit and what deal we will get, but on the ground the construction industry is holding up well and there is a lot of velocity – with opportunities to grow for the right companies.”

ITC also announce that current Managing Director Ian Conway will be stepping down from his current role, with Nick Conway taking up the position, with immediate effect from today. ITC, a specialist fit out and refurbishment contractor, today unveils a new brand identity, marking its established presence in the construction industry and demonstrating its commitment to excellence. Formerly known as ITC Concepts, the new look for the Croydon-based company ushers in a strong vision for the future which will see ITC look to grow its size and reputation to even greater heights.

Plasloc has gained a reputation for producing an incredibly versatile product that is suitable for any environment, be this internal or external. At the time of writing Plasloc has been an essential component in over 5680 different projects. The company has also established a network of over three hundred different clients, including Amazon, Morrisons, Dyson and the BBC, and is on course for substantial growth through 2018/19.

Ian Conway, one of ITC’s founders, commented: “I’m incredibly excited about ITC’s brand refresh and the new opportunities it presents. It’s amazing to think that our first invoice was for £60 and we have now been in business for 25 years later, employing over 60 people and working on some of the UK’s most exciting projects. “What sets us apart from other contractors is our enthusiastic, positive and dynamic approach. Our vision is to be a business driven by talented construction professionals, providing an environment that fosters personal growth and encourages self-pride, and this brand refresh encapsulates this. “It feels very fitting that this exciting new change is happening as I handover my role of Managing Director to Nick, who I will continue to work alongside, and the board.”

Project News 73 NEW HOMES TO BREATHE LIFE INTO DISUSED RIVERSIDE LOCATION PLANS SUBMITTED by CPMG Architects have been approved to build a new housing development ‘Pelham Waterside’ on Trent Lane in Nottingham. Nottingham City Council has approved designs for the landmark residential scheme by local developer Pelham Homes, to be built on a disused industrial site on the east side of Trent Lane. The new development will build 73 homes, including two and three-storey houses and a four-storey apartment block, bringing new residents to the riverside location and rejuvenate a growing area of the city.

Steve Milan, associate group leader for CPMG Architects said: “CPMG has worked closely with Nottingham City Council planners to develop the plans in line with the council’s aspirations. The development will be part of a pivotal year for the city’s regeneration and we’re so pleased to be involved in this exciting time. “A combination of high-quality brickwork, timber cladding and dark aluminium windows will ensure Pelham Waterside offers an attractive facade to the Trent Lane redevelopment, with the rest of the site creating a high quality public realm.” Nick Gregory, director for CPMG

Architects said: “We’re really pleased to be expanding our residential portfolio in the centre of Nottingham. We have great expertise in collaborating with government and private companies to deliver attractive and commercially successful projects. This scheme will provide much needed residential accommodation in an up and coming part of the city” Allan Fisher, director of development and sales for Pelham Homes, said: “After years in the making we’re really excited that our scheme has received planning permission. We’re looking forward to making our vision for Pelham Waterside a reality when the build starts later in the year.” The new development is due to start on site late summer 2018 and complete during 2019. The project team for Pelham Waterside is Couch Perry Wilkes, mechanical and electrical consultants, Curtins, structural engineers and United Living, main contractor.

Construction Solutions awarded complex refurb contract in Spitalfields Construction Solutions, which specialises in structural alterations, has secured a new £1m contract as part of a major £9m refurbishment project near Brick Lane in London. The 32,200 sq ft office building is located on Princelet Street and was originally constructed in the 1800s. It is being extensively refurbished and extended, including the addition of two floors, a new roof structure, and a larger atrium featuring a new cantilevered staircase.

to be carefully planned to ensure that no vehicles block the street.”

Appointed by main contractor Collins Construction, Construction Solutions will be responsible for designing and installing the temporary works and structural steelwork as well as carrying out groundworks and demolition. This will involve removing the existing roof, supporting the entire façade, and underpinning party walls. Construction Solutions will also need to design, lift and install two triangular trusses, each weighing 10 tonnes and that span the full

Mark Farmer, managing director of Construction Solutions said: “This is a very complex refurbishment project both in terms of its design and location. Situated on a narrow, one-way street in the heart of London, we have to overcome many logistical challenges as are unable to close the road or use a tower crane to help lift equipment and materials. This means that we will have to manually lift, move and distribute the structural work using the internal space. Deliveries will also need

William Bowers, senior project manager at Collins Construction added: “We have appointed Construction Solutions as our specialist partner on a number of projects, so we know they have the expertise and experience required to manage the challenging structural elements of this project. Working within such a constrained site will require the team to go the extra mile, carefully co-ordinating its activity and ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area.”

Project News Taxiway reconstruction prepares Manchester Airport for summer peak Galliford Try has completed a critical phase of taxiway reconstruction work at Manchester Airport ahead of the summer peak season. The photo shows work at the junction of the Alpha Echo taxiway which is a key point within the taxiway network. Most aircraft using Runway 1 pass through this point. Colin Abbott, Galliford Try Aviation Director, said: “During the works aircraft needed to backtrack onto the runway for access to the terminals, an option that becomes increasingly unviable as the summer season begins and flights reach their peak. We had considerable challenges with the ground conditions and weather but still managed to complete the scheme on time.”

Colin added: “In the past airports have tackled this type of work in sensitive areas by carrying out short-term repairs due to concerns about potential overrunning and the impact on operations.”

Galliford Try has completed a similarly important pre-summer project at East Midlands Airport where it has reconstructed Quebec taxiway which connects the central passenger apron to the taxiway network.

Rad Taylor, Operations Director at Manchester Airport, said: “It’s pleasing to have the taxiway works completed in time for what is set to be our busiest summer and Galliford Try was a great partner to work with during the project.

The completion of the works will allow for optimum use of the airfield this summer with millions of passengers set to jet off to far flung destinations including the likes of San Francisco, Beijing, Dubai and Boston.” The volume of traffic at airports such as Manchester and East Midlands more than trebles during the summer season compared to winter. Both airports are part of Manchester Airports Group (MAG).

NEW LONDON LAW SCHOOL ADOPTS WATER REUSE Waterscan has been selected to provide a sustainable water system for The City Law School, part of City, University of London following a competitive tender. Set to open in early 2019, sustainability principles feature highly in this building scheme which aims to contribute positively to its local context: it will comprise a car-free zone, secure cycle parking and tree planting alongside water reuse. “The London Plan encourages the reuse of water and we worked through various options for this project including greywater recycling to intelligent attenuation. Tight space onsite led to us recommending and creating a bespoke combined rainwater harvesting and attenuation system: an exceptionally cost effective solution when balancing spatial and environmental considerations,” commented Barry Millar, Operations Director from Waterscan. The standalone rainwater harvesting system, operating in conjunction with attenuation water storage, will collect and store rainwater, filter it through a robust treatment system and reuse it for non-potable applications including toilet flushing. Not only will its deployment contribute to London’s long term urban infrastructure planning and sustainable development goals, but it will also deliver ongoing cost savings for the client through the substitution of mains water for rainwater. It is estimated that City, University of London will save around £4,500 each year by adopting this approach.

Rainwater harvesting systems are suitable for all commercial applications where there is adequate roof space to harvest sufficient water to achieve a good return on investment. They can reduce mains water consumption by up to 30% with additional benefits arising from reducing risks of stormwater flooding, decreased sewerage charges and lower energy costs associated with water supply. Waterscan’s unique water reuse systems feature multiple tiered redundancy to ensure complete integrity of supply, built-in telemetry which transmits system data and live diagnostics for preventative maintenance, and low energy components which can produce 1m3 water using just 1.5Kw/h energy. Smaller system footprints, when compared to legacy water reuse technologies, reduce installation costs and impact on building footprints too.

Hillhead 2018

What’s New at Hillhead 2018? Next month Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, in Derbyshire, will once again host the world’s biggest working quarry exhibition, and with no fewer than 525 UK and overseas companies booked into Hillhead 2018, this year’s event will be 10% larger than ever before, easily surpassing the 476 exhibitors that attended in 2016. Show director Richard Bradbury explained: ‘Growth has come from additional outdoor space created at the top end of the site and the Registration Pavilion, which has doubled in size and will host 90 companies this year. A record number of demonstrations are also being planned and we are looking forward to opening our doors to the construction and quarrying industry from 26–28 June.’ The following selection provides a sneak peek of just some of the new companies, plant, equipment, systems and services that visitors will be able to see on display at Hillhead 2018. With 40 years’ expertise in the manufacture of dedicated hydraulic tools and equipment for the demolition, recycling, rehandling and earthmoving sectors, Arden Equipment aim to provide new product innovations whilst making safety and the environment two of their main priorities. The French manufacturer has now joined the shortlist of tilt-rotor manufacturers and its new Arden TiltRotor will be shown exclusively at Hillhead 2018. Moreover, Arden Equipment have extended their Arden Jet technology to the company’s sorting grabs and high-lift buckets, and say the multi-award-winning water-spraying system is the first to be factory fitted on a demolition tool to reduce on-site dust. Bell Equipment will be showcasing the largest range of articulated dumptrucks on the market at this year’s Hillhead show. The company’s evolved E-series line-up now comprises machines ranging from the compact B20E to the heavyweight B60E. Visitors to the Bell stand will also be able to discover more about the new B30E 4x4. With its shorter wheelbase, this new machine is more manoeuvrable than its six-wheeled counterpart, and with the absence of a third axle tyre wear is reduced, making it a cost-effective yet efficient machine. The Bobcat stand at Hillhead 2018 will show models from the company’s latest compact loader, compact excavator, telehandler and attachment ranges, including the first appearance in the UK of the new Bobcat R-Series compact excavators ranging from 2 to 4 tonnes

in weight. Another product being shown for the first time at Hillhead is the new TL30.70 compact telehandler, which provides a maximum lift capacity of 3 tonnes and a maximum lift height of nearly 7m. Bruce Materials Processing Solutions will be using Hillhead 2018 to promote their self-contained BWPOD 100 Bruce WashPod, which incorporates aggregate scrubbing, trash removal, aggregate rinsing/sizing and sand dewatering in one neat package, but visitors will also be able to view the BWB120 Bruce Water Separator, which now has the added benefit of a new, optional silt-removal system. Designed for the removal of lighter-density materials, such as plastic, paper, cardboard, wood and polystyrene from aggregates, rubble, trommel fines, and construction and demolition waste, the BWB120 Bruce Water Separator offers an effective and cost-efficient way of cleaning material and creating additional revenue streams from previously redundant materials. Celebrating 40 years since the launch of the company’s construction equipment range, Doosan will be showing their latest generation of excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dumptrucks, with Hillhead 2018 providing the platform for the UK launch of several new product developments, including a new version of the company’s 30-tonne DA30 ADT. The company has also announced a number of new safety and ergonomic features on all six of its large wheel loaders, and has implemented a restyling of all models in the range, with a modified colour scheme and more dynamic curved lines designed to reinforce the robustness and power of Doosan loaders. Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK) Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe, are one of the UK’s leading suppliers of construction equipment for construction, mining and quarrying applications. Lined up on static display on the company’s stand at Hillhead 2018 we will be the new Hitachi ZW330-6 wheel loader alongside the ZX530LCH-6 and ZX690LCR-6BE crawler excavators, whilst the company’s heavyweight ZX890LCR-6BE tracked excavator will be put through its paces in the face demonstration area. At Hillhead 2018, Hycontrol will be focusing on the dangers posed by silo over-pressurization. Without testable pressure safety equipment and inlet controls, silos can easily become overpressurized, leading to ruptures and filters

30 Construction UK Magazine - June 2018

being blown off the silo roof. There have been several such incidents in recent years, and Hycontrol, who are urging the industry to address this dangerous situation, will be demonstrating a number of new products at the show, including their ground-breaking SHIELD siloprotection system. Visitors to the Hyundai stand at Hillhead will be among the first to see the recently launched HX130 LCR – the third compactradius crawler excavator model in the company’s HX series product line. Taking centre stage alongside seven existing Hyundai models – the HL960HD and HL975 wheeled loaders; the HX220 L, HX300 L and HX380 L crawler excavators; and the R18-9 and R30Z-9A compact excavators – the new HX130 LCR is powered by a 73.6hp (55kW) Perkins 854F Tier 4 final/Stage IIIB-compliant diesel engine, has a standard operating weight of 12,930kg (LCR model), a maximum digging depth of 18ft 4in (5.57m) and a maximum digging reach of 27ft (8.22m). JCB are aiming to provide a touch of the X factor at Hillhead 2018 with the presence of their brand new 20-tonne 220X tracked excavator. Over a four-year development period, the company has undertaken an intensive programme of X-series component and product testing to achieve increased levels of build quality and provide maximum operator comfort, durability and reliability in operation. Several variants of the machine will be shown on the stand and in the demonstration area, including models in demolition specification. The new X-Series excavators will feature alongside other machines from the company’s extensive product range, including: the JCB 7T-1 front-tip, hi-viz site dumper; the Hydradig 110W; and the JCB Pilingmaster backhoe loader. MIT, suppliers of industrial driveline components, will be displaying the new HP500 wet clutch power take-off (PTO) system from Twin Disc and HTV700 hybrid electric driveline system, designed and manufactured by Transfluid Italy. Launched earlier this year, the heavy-duty HP500 PTO delivers 500hp at 1,800 rev/min and

Hillhead 2018 is well suited to driving pumps, grinders, crushers, dredgers, chippers, shredders and heavy-duty drilling. Showcasing the green credentials of hybrid technology, the Transfluid HT700 system allows the end-user to operate in three modes – electric propulsion; engine propulsion; and booster. In electric mode, the unit operates with zero emissions and minimal vibration, while booster mode delivers extra torque by increasing acceleration via the electric motor. First-time exhibitors OKO will be showing their strongest tyre sealant to date – Mining X-tra Heavy Duty – which has been successfully tested to –52°C in Siberia and is officially approved by Norilsk, one of the world’s largest mining companies, in tyres as large as 62in. The sealant is sold to heavy-duty vehicle fleets in over 80 countries. The company will also be launching OKO LifeLong, a free-flowing wheel and tyre life extender liquid. It uses state-of-the-art nanotechnology to actively clean and prolong wheel rims by coating them with a molecular film at all times. The bright green UV LifeLong product also alerts operators to sidewall tyre cracks and bead/rim/O-ring leaks so that these can be repaired before they cause problems. It is available in 25- to 220-litre drums as well as 1,000-litre intermediate bulk containers. Pioneer Pump, one of the world leaders in the design and supply of highperformance, portable and permanently

installed pumps, will be showing their brand new 150SMS dewatering pump and the new compact and lightweight 300SLC. Featuring Pioneer’s high-flow 12in pump, built into a redesigned canopy with reduced footprint and improved accessibility, the new 300SLC is designed to work under the most challenging applications. SMT GB, the exclusive distributors for Volvo Construction Equipment products in Great Britain, will be showing the new L260H wheel loader, ECR355E excavator, EWR170E and EW220E wheeled excavators, and P4820D paver for the first time in Great Britain, while Volvo CE’s largest machines – the A60H articulated hauler and EC750E excavator – will be at work in the demonstration area. In addition, the Volvo-powered Man Engine will be making a special guest appearance at this year’s show. Standing at 10m tall, this giant mechanical puppet is not to be missed! Takeuchi will be showcasing new products across their machinery range (1–15-tonne class), including the latest TB2150R model – a conventional fixed-boom excavator (15 tonnes) packed with enhanced operating features complemented by a powerful breakout capability. Britain’s only demountable container that can be built without tools, by two operatives in just 5 minutes! In the rapidly expanding and fiercely competitive market of portable containers, national distributors QuickBuild have been successfully supplying demountable containers to the building industry for over ten years. With depots in London and Devon, both branches of the company have recently relocated to new larger premises as QuickBuild expands in line with growing demand for their products. The secret to the success of the company lies in the quality of the QuickBuild range. QuickBuild containers are built to the highest standard but they are still surprisingly simple to use. The units are totally unique in that the only components used to fasten the whole container together are four spring clip pins. Yet the containers remain very stable and resilient keeping the contents dry safe and

secure. Additional security measures can be fitted for greater peace of mind. Using either a crane, lifting from the roof, or a forklift, lifting from underneath with the forklift points, the container can be transported with up to an incredible 3 tonne load, or upgraded for a 6 tonne load. All the units are galvanised with a five year guarantee and are fully CE tested for lifting safety.

Company News CONNOLLY DIVERSIFICATION MARKED WITH MAJOR REBRAND Wigan-based community housing specialist announces new visual identity as commercial activity grows. Construction and community housing specialist Connolly has announced the launch of its new visual identity as the £20m turnover business looks to communicate a growing portfolio of services.

Simon Harrison, MD Connolly

Taylor Wimpey proudly building communities ‘Right Up Your Street’ for over 130 years Taylor Wimpey is one of the UK’s largest homebuilders and has been proudly building since 1880. During 2017 alone, Taylor Wimpey completed over 14,500 much-needed new homes in the UK and opened 109 new high-quality developments in villages, town and cities where people want to live. Clare Brimble, UK Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey said: “We have been building homes people need for the past 138 years and are proud of our experience and expertise as a local homebuilder. We are currently building in most regions throughout the UK, so we really are providing new homes ‘right up your street.’ Although we are a national

business, we understand the importance of working with local communities and aim to ensure that the homes we provide have a true sense of place and meet the needs of local people.” To celebrate the launch of their ‘Right Up Your Street’ campaign, Taylor Wimpey will be hosting street parties at some of its developments across the UK this summer to give both existing residents and potential purchasers the chance to meet their neighbours and get a feel for what it’s like to live in a Taylor Wimpey community. For more information about Taylor Wimpey visit www.taylorwimpey.co.uk.

Having built a reputation over 35 years as a family contractor specialising in social housing developments across the North West, the Wigan-based business has seen its core services expand in recent years with a growing number of projects in the commercial sector. The new brand image has been designed to reflect Connolly’s increasing diversification as the business continues to focus on making a positive difference in the community. Managing Director Simon Harrison explained: “As a family business, our focus has always been to add social value to the communities we work with, whether that’s through the people we employ or the projects we work on. We’re extremely proud of the reputation we’ve developed for socially conscious construction and planned refurbishment, and that drive remains at the core of what we do. As Connolly has developed and grown in recent years, we’ve recognised a need to bring our brand image in line with that focus. The intention is that this new visual identity will communicate the quality and professionalism of the team, whilst not losing sight of our responsibility to the partners and residents who have come to rely on us.” Alongside an increase in commercial refurbishment and fit-out projects, Connolly has also seen its reach spread from the North West into Yorkshire and North Wales, where it continues to develop its social housing proposition with local partners. Simon continued: “Connolly is built on a foundation of providing quality pathways for its employees to develop, employing local people, engaging with local businesses and delivering a human touch to the communities we operate in. As we expand the areas and business streams we offer, our intention is very much to continue operating as a family business that invests in its people to facilitate growth.” With over a decade’s experience in planned maintenance and refurbishment for the social housing sector, the firm continues to work with a raft of local authorities, social housing providers and specialist care developments across the region.

NEW APPROACH TO BUILDING DESIGN REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A HEALTHIER FUTURE Living in damp and mouldy homes increases our risk of asthma by 40%, and unless we act now we risk endangering our health as a result. Research from the VELUX Group has revealed the need to rethink building design and renovation to avoid a future increase of children suffering from asthma or allergies. The Indoor Generation survey was conducted across 14 countries (including the UK), unveiling around 16,000 people’s perceptions of the way they live their lives and what contributes to their personal health. The survey unearthed an alarming misconception that the vast majority of people in Britain (62%) believe indoor air is just as polluted or cleaner than outdoor air. It also revealed a lack of understanding about the importance of adequate natural ventilation. VELUX hopes to raise awareness of the importance of designing healthy buildings that are well ventilated and enjoy both good daylight and fresh air. Dr Russell Foster, Head of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, University of Oxford, said: “From the year 1800 to 2000, we’ve gone from 90% of people working outside to less than 20%. In a very short space of time, we’ve gone from being an outdoor species to spending most of our time in dim, dark caves.” We know from previous research that Europeans consider the quality of their home environment to be more important than a healthy diet or being physically

The health benefits of improving our indoor environment are scientifically proven, however we still have a long journey to go on in terms of making people understand that these changes are not just a ‘nice to have’. Without action we can put our health at risk active, yet the new YouGov survey uncovers an alarmingly low level of knowledge of what makes a healthy home. Jim Coates, Director at VELUX, said: “Public buildings are just as important to consider as homes. Many offices have been designed with windows which do not open, leading to ‘sick building syndrome’ where carbon dioxide and viruses remain trapped in buildings with no means of escape. And whilst there is compelling research which demonstrates the positive impact which both daylight and ventilation has on exam results, for example, there is no clear

legislation to influence change for the better. “It was recognised in the legal framework for buildings, adopted on 17 April by the European Parliament, that all technical building systems shall be designed in a way so that they optimise health, wellbeing and indoor comfort. But we need to go further to promote the holistic building approach. “The health benefits of improving our indoor environment are scientifically proven, however we still have a long journey to go on in terms of making people understand that these changes are not just a ‘nice to have’. Without action we can put our health at risk.” The YouGov survey revealed that most people underestimate the amount of time they spend indoors, with a quarter of people (25%) claiming to spend just 14 hours or less inside. We know, in reality that the majority spend over 90% of their time indoors, and often in dark, poorly ventilated buildings leading to the emergence of a so called ‘indoor generation’. Almost one in four people (23%) admitted to never going outside, spending up to 24 hours a day indoors. The Indoor Generation refers to a growing number of people who spend the vast majority of their time indoors – currently 90% of their lives – compared to previous generations.

Interview

Mental health in construction and the workplace - Interview with Russell Stilwell Russell Stilwell is the Founder and Managing Director of RSE Building Services and RSE Technologies. He is a passionate advocate for improving and changing attitudes towards mental health wellbeing within the workplace and the construction industry as a whole. After experiencing his own personal challenges with mental health, he realised that in order to help others, there needed to be a huge shift in culture within the sector.

1. What is currently being done to draw attention to mental health and wellbeing in the workplace and the construction industry? Organisations such as Mates In Mind are working hard to break down the stigma associated with mental health. Mates In Mind is pushing the boundaries of mental health awareness within the construction industry and is providing an example of best practices that all businesses can utilise. However, there is still a lot more that needs to be done.

2. How has the construction industry’s attitude towards mental health changed within recent years? Construction can be an extremely stressful environment to work in. Commercial game playing and finger pointing play a devastating role on the mental health of everyone within our industry. Ultimately, this can cause a domino effect, having an enormous impact; instigating late or no payments tremoring through a contractual chain – not to mention ‘passing the baby’ and the creation of fictional credibility accusations. The risk of suicide among those working in the construction industry is three times higher than the male national average. In fact, people

The risk of suicide among those working in the construction industry is three times higher than the male national average. In fact, people working in the construction industry are 10 times more likely to die as a result of suicide than from accidents on site. working in the construction industry are 10 times more likely to die as a result of suicide than from accidents on site. You only have to look on the top of the ITV’s London Headquarters for a very real and compelling shiver to go down the spine However, slowly but surely, the construction industry and businesses as a whole are starting to wake up to the mental health problems we face in the workplace. The foundations are being laid for a better understanding of mental health. But we still have a long way to go. At the end of the day, healthier minds achieve better results, and this is something we can all learn from.

3. Do you think enough is being done to give the subject of mental health attention within the industry? We go to great lengths to assess hazards and put in place risk assessments associated with mitigating physical harm but do not do enough to assess the subject of wellbeing and healthy minds. There is a long road ahead of us and a lot needs to change.

4. Is there training available to enable workers within the construction industry the ability to supports their co-workers? Mates In Mind provides tools which cover a range of topics including how to tackle stress in work, how to achieve positive mental health at work and managing returning to work after a leave of absence. All these tools are readily available on the Mates In Mind website - www.matesinmind.org

44 Construction UK Magazine - June 2018

5. Other than to raise awareness, what are the main aims for Mental Health Awareness Week? A big part of tackling poor mental health in the workplace is encouraging people to speak up and seek support if they need it. It is important that people feel comfortable discussing their problems. Its important that the macho culture in the construction industry is broken down. In order to achieve this we all need to work together. We all have a role to play. This could be as simple as checking in with colleagues. Asking how they’re feeling. Asking if they need a hand. If you suspect someone isn’t being themselves, grab a coffee with them. After all, having a chat with someone or being able to spot the signs of behaviour concealment could result in them opening up and allowing them to get the help and support they need. This could prevent them from potentially adding to the horrifying statistics that exist with the illness that is mental health.

A big part of tackling poor mental health in the workplace is encouraging people to speak up and seek support if they need it. It is important that people feel comfortable discussing their problems. Its important that the macho culture in the construction industry is broken down. greater. This philosophy extends throughout every aspect of my business. I am dedicated to creating a positive work environment. This includes continually investing in technology and staff development, and a commitment to the highest health and safety standards. Our use of state-of-the-art tools and

workflows ensure an efficient means of removing ambiguity from the construction process and potentially the ability for game-playing to be minimised through the creation of black or white results. Today, through the use of technology my team can accurately highlight possible issues with a project before work even begins – potentially saving the end client a serious amount of

money whilst eliminating stress before it materialises. The introduction, research and development work undertaken by the RSE businesses has been seen to enhance programme deadlines that can be met or bettered. Budgets can be adhered to and managed with optimised effect. Outstanding results can be achieved. But, perhaps most importantly, projects can be de-risked effectively and staff benefit from improved safety and culture. www.matesinmind.org

News Stories

British and migrant workers at risk of exploitation on UK construction sites, says CIOB The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is urging UK contractors to face up to the significant human rights risks in their supply chains, with the launch of a new report that finds both British and foreign workers at risk of exploitation. Construction and the Modern Slavery Act, tackling exploitation in the UK is published as the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and National Crime Agency (NCA) jointly lead a national enforcement campaign involving police forces and other agencies aimed at tackling labour exploitation. NCA analysis has identified construction as one of the most common sectors for labour exploitation in the UK. Criticising the industry’s slow response to the Modern Slavery Act, CIOB’s report highlights the aggressive business models that are creating an environment for unethical procurement and recruitment practices, and the systemic auditing failures that are allowing criminals to infiltrate major projects undetected. Problems are set at the top of supply chains with lowest cost tendering, abuse of the retentions system and late payment pricing out ethical practice. The situation is creating an imbalance of power that leaves all nationalities vulnerable to exploitation. Illegal activities such as blacklisting are also believed to be continuing, despite recent high profile court cases. Major contractors in construction typically have long and fragmented supply chains,

with little visibility beyond tiers one or two. They are also heavily reliant on temporary migrant labour, a significant indicator of risk. Nevertheless, the report found examples of complacency and disbelief that major projects were vulnerable to criminal infiltration and human trafficking. This contrasted with incidents of modern slavery being found on major UK infrastructure programmes, PFI hospital projects, power plants, recycling centres, renovation projects, demolition sites and local authority schemes. The report highlights: • How industry is conflating immigration checks with modern slavery checks. This is ineffective because many people trapped in modern slavery have a legitimate right to work in the UK. • Severe weaknesses in commercial auditing models, with auditors disincentivised to report problems to the police. • Poor transparency in supply chain reporting standards, with many eligible companies failing to produce a modern slavery report in the first annual reporting cycle. A significant number of published statements do not follow minimum legal requirements, including being visible on the company homepage and being signed off by a board director. • A tendency for companies to water down their modern slavery statements to remove mention of risk, against the spirit of the Modern Slavery Act.

• Examples of sharp practice, with major players defaulting to legal compliance exercises that push responsibility onto their less well-resourced suppliers. This is also against the spirit of the legislation. • Construction and the Modern Slavery Act includes interviews with a number of leaders and influencers, including: • Independent anti-slavery commissioner Kevin Hyland OBE • The late Paul Broadbent, former chief executive of the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) • Leading barrister Caroline Haughey QC • Chief constable for Devon and Cornwall Police and national policing lead for modern slavery Shaun Sawyer • Justine Currell, executive director of Unseen and the Modern Slavery Helpline The report explores the legal, investor and social pressures for driving change. It also highlights examples of industry best practice as well as platforms for information sharing, such as the GLAA’s construction forum. Strategies for rehabilitating survivors of slavery are included through the Co-op Group’s Bright Future programme. CIOB is calling for a new industry narrative: asking contractors to acknowledge that every supply chain is at risk and collaborate more widely to combat crime. It is launching a Routemap to Fair Business which sets out steps for raising standards for all workers and suppliers, encouraging a more proactive approach to tackling systemic issues.

News Stories ISLE OF WIGHT EDUCATIONAL SCHEME HOPING TO SCORE DOUBLE AWARD WIN A £12 MILLION SCHEME, funded by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which aims to create a worldclass engineering workforce on the Isle of Wight, has been shortlisted for two industry awards. The Centre of Excellence for Composites, Advanced Manufacturing and Marine (CECAMM) – a new educational facility at the Isle of Wight College – has been nominated for a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) [IW] and IW Society Design and Conservation Awards and a Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Regional Building Excellence Award for the best educational building in the south east. Leading property, construction and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard delivered full multi-disciplinary services for the project – designing the building as well as acting as quantity surveyors, project managers and mechanical and electrical engineers – which provides 3,050 sqm of high quality teaching facilities and flexible workshops for up to 500 engineering students. Rod Burton, partner at Pick Everard, said: “We’re delighted that the CECAMM has been nominated for two prestigious awards, showcasing the success of such a worthy development. “The world-class facility offers students a broad experience of engineering skills within a study programme – created in partnership with local industry leaders – designed to help secure their careers by preparing them for work or higher study.

We’re delighted that the CECAMM has been nominated for two prestigious awards, showcasing the success of such a worthy development. “We achieved a BREEAM design rating of ‘very good’ by incorporating sustainable solutions – such as rainwater attenuation and optimised use of day-lighting – within the design.

encouraging young students to seek their career path here. The design was a team effort within a very tight budget with guidance from island employers to give students the skills they need for work.”

“Due to the nature of the clients’ requirements, the project challenged the design team from the outset, particularly the mechanical and electrical engineers, as they had to work to very exacting standards when producing specifications for the specialist equipment needed. Surface water was also a particular challenge, resulting in the design and construction of swales, these shallow channels now serve to enhance the local habitat and landscape quality within the site by collecting water.

The CECAMM Centre – situated at Whippingham Technology Park, East Cowes – provides training in numerous specialist industries, including 3D printing, bench fitting, boat construction and design, marine engineering and fabrication.

“This new facility will contribute to a sustainable, long-term economic development on the island, hopefully

Nottingham City Homes sweeps the board at the UK Housing Awards Nottingham City Homes (NCH), the arms’ length management organisation (ALMO) of Nottingham City Council, swept the board at the UK Housing Awards in London last night, taking home three awards including the prestigious Landlord of the Year. The UK Housing Awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing, are known as ‘the Oscars of the housing world’ and showcase the very best the sector has to offer. The Landlord of the Year Award is the Housing equivalent of Best Film, and as well as submitting a nomination, NCH representatives had to go through a gruelling interview process in which they were quizzed on every aspect of the work they do in some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities, delivering on the vision of creating homes and places where people want to live and achieving record satisfaction by putting residents at the heart of everything the organisation does. NCH also took home the awards for Innovation of the Year, in recognition of its pioneering approach to tackling energy inefficiency in older housing stock using Energiesprong techniques, and Outstanding

Approach to Tenant Involvement, for the way in which it includes tenants in decision making from Board level down. ‫‏‬ NCH is the first housing organisation in the country to adopt the ground-breaking Energiesprong approach, pioneered in the Netherlands, that upgrades a home with new outside walls and windows, a solar roof, and a state of the art heating system, dramatically reducing household energy bills and making homes warmer and healthier for residents. Construction partners for the Energiesprong project, delivered in the Sneinton area, were Melius Homes, and the project has been supported and part financed by the REMOURBAN initiative that works to show how sustainability can be integrated into the regeneration of towns and cities across the UK.

achieving that – with the Innovation award demonstrating they are going beyond that to improve energy efficiency for their tenants. It’s really good to see them win the Outstanding Approach to Tenant Involvement Award, showing how they work closely with the local community, listening and responding to tenants brilliantly to create homes and communities where people want to live and choose to live.”‫‏‬

The City Council’s Portfolio for Planning and Housing, Councillor Jane Urquhart, said: “I’m really proud of everything that NCH have achieved, and these awards are really excellent recognition of all the fantastic work they have done to make the housing offer for people in Nottingham so good.

In the last year, NCH has helped over 5,000 people live more healthily, injected over £100,000 into community projects, and has worked alongside older residents to shape a £4m modernisation project. NCH residents themselves have delivered 1,100 community fitness sessions, successfully resolved 18 community conflicts, and have come forward in their hundreds to lobby the government about changes to social housing.‫‏‬

“Our overall expectation is of high quality housing across all tenures and winning Landlord of the Year shows that Nottingham’s biggest social landlord is

I’m really proud of everything that NCH have achieved, and these awards are really excellent recognition of all the fantastic work they have done to make the housing offer for people in Nottingham so good

NCH won the Outstanding Approach to Tenant Involvement‫‏‬Award because it puts residents at the forefront of everything it does, empowering them to influence decisions and shape the direction of the organisation. It also supports residents to develop their skills and contribute to their community by volunteering in a range of different ways.

Resident Sarita-Marie Rehman-Wall, who attended last night’s awards, said, “I’m proud to be a part of NCH, and to be involved in all the great work that we do in communities across Nottingham. These awards are richly deserved.” Nick Murphy, NCH Chief Executive, said:‫“‏‬Our vision of creating homes and places where people want to live goes beyond traditional housing services. We offer our residents a whole range of initiatives to help them create better lives and better futures for themselves, their families and their communities. ‫‏‬ “It’s about so much more that having a home that’s secure, warm and modern ‫‏ –‏‬it’s about realising the potential of individuals and communities. Our residents know that if they have a goal that they want to achieve, we’ll be right beside them, supporting them to reach it. “I’m delighted that we’re Landlord of the Year - it’s a testament to the great work that our staff and residents do every day across the city. I am fortunate to lead a magnificent team of committed and dedicated staff at NCH, and it was an honour to accept this award last night on their behalf.”

Reaching for the sky at the University of Manchester’s Manchester Engineering Campus Development Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, has reached a key milestone on The University of Manchester’s £287 million Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) project with the first reinforced concrete core reaching full height. The core, which is one of four, will be an integral component of the seven storey ‘MEC Hall’ building, housing lift shafts and stairwells. Core 4 stands at 22.4 metres high and 9.15 metres wide, constructed on a 1.8 metre deep reinforced concrete raft foundation. A hydraulic jacking system is used to construct the cores, formed of plywood-faced metal formwork modules, floor-by-floor. Once in place, concrete is poured in and allowed to set before the system ‘jumps’ to the next level and the process is repeated until the core reaches full height. The remaining three cores will be completed over the coming months. Upon completion, the MEC Hall will house an array of cutting-edge teaching and research facilities including lecture theatres, laboratories, an anechoic chamber (designed to completely absorb sound and electromagnetic waves), and an Electron Microscope suite.

Mark Pearson, Balfour Beatty MECD Project Director, said: “We are delighted to reach this project milestone which has seen the team safely construct the first core to full height. The core gives a true indication of the vast scale of the MEC Hall and how this will form a fundamental part of the MECD. We have extensive expertise in the higher education sector and look forward to continued collaboration with the University of Manchester to deliver the project, which will bring benefits for staff and students, in addition to the local community through work and development opportunities.” Diana Hampson, Director of Estates at Facilities at The University of Manchester,

said: “The Manchester Engineering Campus Development will be a worldleading centre for learning and research and is set to become one of the largest buildings in UK higher education. It is an exciting development for The University of Manchester and is great to see it start to take shape.” The four-year MECD project, which is being delivered in collaboration with the University of Manchester’s Directorate of Estates and Facilities, is one of the largest capital development projects ever undertaken by a UK higher education institution. The scheme is being project managed by Buro Four.

LANES GETS THE LOW DOWN ON HGV SAFETY Lanes Group plc is the first drainage specialist in the UK to introduce a new low entry high visibility lorry cab developed by Scania. The company is taking delivery of a jetting and vacuumation tanker that has the new L-series cab, designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, especially in urban environments. The JHL RECycler 312 jet vac tanker was shown off by Scania at IFAT, the environmental technologies exhibition in Munich, Germany (May 14-18 2018), before being delivered to Lanes Group. Investment in the innovative cab is the latest step by Lanes Group to boost road safety. It already holds FORS Bronze accreditation and has invested in an advanced lorry video camera system to ensure vehicles comply with the London Safer Lorry Scheme. The new jet vac tanker has a 12,000-litre partitioned tank, can filter and reuse wastewater, jets at up to 140 bar (2030 PSI), and lifts 26,200 litres per minute at 60% vacuum. It will be operated by Lanes Utilities, Lanes Group’s wastewater network services maintenance division. The jet vac tanker is also fitted with the latest mini video cameras to give the drivers

The technology has been introduced to comply with the Safer Lorry Scheme, a programme of safety measures brought in by Transport for London and the capital’s mayor to make roads safer. Lanes’ achievement of the Bronze accreditation under FORS, the HGV operator safety standard for London, confirms it has good transport practices and complies with

World Leaders in Water Leak Detection and Prevention Floodcheck® ‘AUTO’ Unfortunately the vast majority of homes worldwide have absolutely no form of water leak prevention or detection installed, leaving them open to huge damage should a leak or flood occur. Typically, such devices are only installed after an incident of water damage has occurred, often at the insistence of insurers. It is anticipated in the future, all new properties will come with a leak detection/prevention device fitted as standard, in much the same way as electrical fuse boxes are installed now; more importantly older homes will require systems to be retrofitted, to protect home owners, investors and insurance companies from the huge costs and devastation that water damage can cause. We strongly believe that the Floodcheck® range of products (and associated services) can be deployed to properties all over the world, ensuring that they are safe from leaks or floods, providing one less stress for their owners.

The Floodcheck® ‘Auto’ valve is a flood prevention device, that monitors the water supply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, to minimise internal water damage caused by leaks or floods, protecting your property from internal flooding by monitoring the water usage and automatically switching off the mains water supply if the device detects any of the following: • A water leak (or forgotten running tap) • An excess flow of water (e.g burst pipe) • Low temperature (to prevent frozen pipes) • Zero water usage (e.g vacant property or owners away) • Floodcheck® Auto is available in UK and EU 15mm & 22mm and USA 1/2” and 3/4” sizes. Suitable power supplies are also available/supplied for these countries.
