It’s time to enter the UK Roofing Awards 2018 The 2018 UK Roofing Awards are now open for entries, with 14 categories to choose from.

Now in their 12th year, these awards recognise the most outstanding roofing projects in the UK as well as individuals who have demonstrated excellence across the roofing industry.

James Talman, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors which hosts the event, said: “The UK Roofing Awards have become an established and eagerly-anticipated highlight of the roofing industry calendar, celebrating businesses and individuals who consistently deliver superb workmanship, innovation and quality in the built environment.

“This event promises to be as spectacular as ever, with more categories to enter and glittering awards ceremony bringing together clients, architects, suppliers, contractors and

other partners under one roof.”

Among established categories, three new categories have been added including innovation, large scale project over £250,000 and small project under £25,000.

Fourteen of the categories can be entered online using a simple and user-friendly form.

The awards ceremony will be held on May 11th, 2018 at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.

Representing over 70% of the roofing industry by value and volume, NFRC is the largest and most influential roofing trade association in the UK and its primary aim is to promote quality contractors and quality products, ensuring that is members are at the forefront of all roofing developments.

Soluis Group secures £1 million innovate UK grant for the construction industry A Soluis Group-led consortium has secured £1 million of funding from Innovate UK to develop an Augmented Worker System (AWE), pioneering the use of virtual and augmented reality for the construction industry.

The system will enable the intelligent design, construction, maintenance and whole-life value of buildings, supporting construction and infrastructure growth. AWE will also realise significant value from Building Information Modelling (BIM) and will target a 25% reduction in cost, 25% reduction in waste, and increased productivity of 30% for projects.

Soluis Group will work with partner organisations that will add considerable skills, knowledge and connections in the industry.

These include, Pinnacle Business Solutions, an information systems consultancy; Carbon Dynamic, an innovative world leading modular timber building construction company; two High Value Manufacturing Catapult centres – the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC).

The consortium will be supported by key industry organisations that will comprise a steering group. These include AECOM, Doosan Babcock, Laing O’Rourke, Autodesk and Microsoft.

With the construction sector being a key sector to the UK economy and one with a considerable growth opportunity, the government has been investing through its Digital Built Britain (DBB) programme.

Through the implementation of DBB, the industry will be able to deliver faster builds to a higher quality with fewer defects and more sustainable buildings. The challenge for industry is meeting the DBB Building Information Modelling (BIM) level mandated by the UK Government. The Augmented Worker

System will provide the construction industry with augmented and virtual reality to improve the construction process at every stage, meeting these standards.

Business Secretary Greg Clark said: “Research and innovation are at the heart of the Government’s vision for a modern Industrial Strategy. The adoption of cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality technology in industries like construction will be vital in helping us identify new, smarter ways of working.

Soluis Group will work with partner organisations that will add considerable skills, knowledge and connections in the industry.

“This Government-backed initiative will help build the UK’s reputation and expertise in the pioneering use of this technology, while helping make construction projects of the future more efficient, cost effective and productive.”

Lead partner in the awarded consortium, Soluis Group, is a leading construction visualisation company that has pioneered the application of realities technology, including development of an augmented reality asset management tool, In-Site, that was piloted at Crossrail’s Liverpool Street station with Laing O’Rourke.

Martin McDonnell, Chairman of Soluis Group said: “The proof of concept project with Crossrail showed how this technology could be applied and add incredible value to the industry. Our vision was to develop this concept much further and create a set of tools that would form the augmented worker of the future. For a business like us, we could only drive this innovation a certain amount and working with the consortium and receiving funding from Innovate UK will help us achieve this much faster and more effectively.”

Real time access to individualised data, analytics and instructions during the construction and operational stages will greatly improve productivity, quality and also help worker well-being.

Creating a framework and guidance around the augmented worker is critically important if we are to successfully unlock this value proposition.”

The funding was awarded by Innovate UK as part of the Infrastructure Systems competition which aims to stimulate innovation that creates UK business growth in infrastructure systems.

Caledonian wins place on £50m ESFA School Framework Caledonian has been awarded a position as an approved supplier on the £50m Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) Framework to act as Lead Designer and Principal Contractor for the design and build of new schools, academies, and other educational facilities.

Caledonian and its Design partner HLM Architects will deliver innovative design led solutions that promote the intelligent use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) and the use of Lean Manufacturing techniques to eliminate waste. This will enable entire school buildings to be manufactured off-site with only minimal works required onsite to install, connect and commission the buildings.

The national agreement for the design and build of modular primary schools is one of three

batches procured directly by Central Government, with Caledonian being selected as one of the two suppliers on the second batch to provide offsite building solutions.

The Framework, which falls under the second wave of the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP), is due to go live in August 2017 for a period of up to 4 years. Sixteen schools will initially be delivered, with further schemes expected up to a value of £95m.

The ESFA plans to continue to develop and apply the modern methods of construction (MMC) provided through the framework to further programmes, revolutionising the way education buildings are specified, procured and delivered.

Green light for £12m town centre leisure scheme in Haverfordwest

Fairacre Property has been granted planning permission for a landmark town centre development in Haverfordwest, Wales, to be designed by Holder Mathias Architects.

The planning application, originally submitted in November 2016, received unanimous council support and will result in the delivery of four restaurants/shops at ground floor level with a five-screen cinema at first floor level, covering 1,400 sq m of leisure floor space. In support of the application, Fairacre has also secured commitment from national cinema operator, REEL Cinemas.

Holder Mathias’s design intent is to create a new leisure offer that fully engages with the River Cleddau, and the proposals include widening and improving the existing riverside walkway, creation of new restaurant units

Britcon completes 13 unit industrial scheme at Markham Vale Building and civil engineering company Britcon has completed the construction of 13 modern new SME units at Markham Vale in Derbyshire.

Britcon were appointed to build to scheme by development partnership Priority Space and Hunt Group which acquired the 1.6-acre site last year and subsequently secured planning consent to deliver 25,000 sq ft of accommodation from Derbyshire County Council.

The scheme sits within the Markham Vale flagship regeneration zone which is a 200-acre business and distribution park at Junction 29A of the M1 motorway.

The industrial units range in size from 1,200 to 3,050 sq ft and are designed to support small to medium sized businesses looking to expand or start up and are available to purchase.

Britcon delivered 13 units of steel frame structure with metal cladding and curtain walling. It also completed site infrastructure works and landscaping with sister company Specialist Surfacing.

Paul Clarkson at Britcon said, “We are pleased to complete our second project with Priority Space. The first, Kiln Park in Yorkshire, was a great success offering a 21,000 sq ft of accommodation with units of unusual design for industrial space. It also incorporated complementary retail units. Britcon’s sector experience includes the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Sheffield, Treleigh Industrial Estate in Cornwall, and Langage Science Park in Plymouth.

Established for more than 26 years, Britcon is £50 million turnover business headquartered in Scunthorpe and directly employs 90 people on its project sites across the UK. Key contracts secured in the last 12 month includes a £13.5 million contract to deliver a new anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in Dagenham for food waste recycler ReFood (UK) Ltd, a series of new developments, extensions and refurbishment projects valued over £10 million for Lidl, and contracts worth over £4 million for global chemicals business Kemira.

Britcon is currently listed by the London Stock Exchange in its latest report of ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Europe’.

ADP wins go-ahead for Arts and Craftsinspired house in Sevenoaks ADP has won planning permission for this 430m² house on a ‘highly sensitive site’ in Sevenoaks, Kent Replacing an existing bungalow, the scheme in The Drive will sit between a Grade II-listed house on one side and a locally listed house on the other According to the firm, the design was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement ‘but expressed in a contemporary manner’ and was described by Sevenoaks District Council’s planning officers as ’high quality and sustainable”.

Olsson appointed as part of Google Kings Cross development team Fire and risk engineers Olsson which established its UK HQ in Manchester last year, will work on Google’s new London campus at Kings Cross.

Olsson moved into the UK market just a year ago, having originally operated out of Australia and New Zealand. The project win will see Olsson work on the fire strategy for the building, working closely with the client, architect and design team.

The news comes following Google’s submission of a planning application to Camden Council for its King’s Cross Campus. This building will be the first, wholly owned and specifically designed Google building outside of the United States.

Construction on the purpose-built 11-storey building, comprising of more than 1 million square feet, of which Google will occupy 650,000 sq ft, will commence in 2018. The building, designed by Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) will feature a natural theme, with all materials sourced through Google’s healthy materials programme.

This new building, combined with its current building at 6 Pancras Square and an additional third building, will create a Google campus with the potential to house 7,000 Google employees. The new building is being developed from the ground up and will contribute to the Knowledge Quarter and King’s Cross’s growing knowledge-based economy.

The project features natural ventilation chimneys, a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system, photovoltaics and ground source heat pumps.

Underground tanks will store rainwater for irrigation of the landscape.

A spokesperson for ADP said: ‘The internal layout reflects the traditional Wealden House arrangement, with a large double-height central void. The work of Baillie Scott – who was active in Sevenoaks – and the adjoining listed house by CW Bowles have also influenced the design.

‘Passive low-energy design has been integral to the design concept, with heavily insulated facades on three sides, and a higher proportion of glazing on the south side for winter warmth.’

The project is being delivered by ADP’s sister company Corde, a combined architecture and engineering design service.

ADP chairman Roger FitzGerald said: ‘This is an important project for Sevenoaks, showing that high-quality design can be respectful of history and setting, whilst being contemporary and sustainable.’

Work is expected to start on site in early 2018 and take 12 months to complete.

Major Shoreditch redevelopment plans unveiled by Douglas and King Local practice Douglas and King Architects has revealed plans for a major redevelopment in Shoreditch, east London Plans for the 9,000m² scheme on the triangular site - dubbed Shoreditch Island - include renovating and extending two 19th century terraces, as well as the replacement of the exisitng Picture House with a ten-storey office building, both in Great Eastern Street.

The project will also involve replacing the 1970s Titchfield House in Tabernacle Street and Singer Street with a five-storey office block; creating a new 90m² building on a vacant site in 95 Tabernacle Street; and a public courtyard in the centre of the site.

Detailed plans are expected to be submitted in November. If approved, work is expected to start on site in in Spring 2020, with a completion date anticipated for Spring 2022.

Restoration for Ram New Orders in Construction Fall to Brewery the Lowest in Three Years Chinese developer Greenland Group has gained planning for phase 3 of its £600m redevelopment of the historic 4.5-acre Ram Brewery site in south London.

ONS figures published today show that construction output in July fell by 0.9% and was 0.4% lower compared with one year earlier. In addition, new orders in Q2 declined 7.8% and fell 12.6% on an annual basis.

Rebecca Larkin, Senior Economist at the Construction Products Association, commented: “Today’s data from the ONS confirms that alongside a 1.3% contraction in output in Q2, new orders in construction hit the lowest level since 2014 Q1.

“In particular, the sectors suffering the largest falls were the industry’s largest three; private housing, commercial and infrastructure.: private housing, commercial and infrastructure. Commercial new orders began tailing off in the second half of 2016 and are 11.2% lower since the EU Referendum. Whilst this downward trend was expected amid the rising uncertainty giving way to a reluctance to invest in new offices space, private sector house building and infrastructure are the key drivers of growth in the CPA’s forecasts for 2018 and 2019. New orders in these key sectors were the lowest since 2015 and highlight that there are now lower volumes of work queued up in the pipeline.

“Nevertheless, for the year to date, construction output is still 1.3% higher than a year ago. The weakness in new orders is factored in to the CPA’s forecasts for 2018, with construction growth slowing to 0.7% as activity on projects reaching an end is not replaced at the same rates.”

Phase 3 of the redevelopment of Britain’s oldest brewery site will see 50 new homes, office and workshop space, and public realm works to connect to the new river walk alongside the Wandle in Wandsworth.

The project also includes the restoration of a Grade-II* listed terrace that is one of Wandsworth’s finest architectural assets. The row of houses will form 16 of the 50 new homes.

In previous phases, Greenland Group has also undertaken the restoration of the original Ram Brewery site, which will be turned into a heritage centre and microbrewery, the Coopers Lofts, which are being sensitively converted in just 14 warehouse-style residences and also the reimagining of the old brewery stables, which will form part of phase 2.

Contractor Ardmore secured the £170m phase 1 of the scheme, which involves building 338 of the 663 planned new homes and is due to be completed later this year.

Along with a strong retail, leisure and residential offering, Ram Quarter will also include a heritage centre, which will display some of the original machinery that had been in use when the site was a full-time brewery, and a microbrewery to continue the site’s 500-year tradition.

The River Wandle, previously hidden behind the brewery walls, is now a central feature of the scheme, running alongside the open courtyard, with restaurants and cafés fronting onto a pedestrianised boulevard on the river.

Contractor Ardmore secured the £170m phase 1 of the scheme, which involves building 338 of the 663 planned new homes and is due to be completed later this year.

ISG has been awarded a £2.5 million contract by Alliance Leisure to deliver the refurbishment and extension of Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton, Yorkshire.

The project will result in a new 5,100 sq ft extension to the complex that will house a gym and toning area to allow the current gym space to be converted into studios, including an immersive spinning studio. New energy-efficient lighting will also be installed in the sports hall and the timber sprung floor will be upgraded.

The refurbishment of the existing centre will include repair and upgrade works to the existing water slides, flumes and wave machine in the pool area. The changing facilities will also be upgraded with the addition of a new members’ change area.

The centre, which is run by Hambleton District Council, is due for completion at the end of the year.

Unobstructed pitch views at bet365 Stadium This summer, Q-railing supplied 250 metres of its revolutionary Easy Glass Pro glass railing system for an ambitious redevelopment of the bet365 Stadium. The frameless balustrades give supporters in the newly constructed disabled bays a spectacular, unobstructed view of the pitch.

As an official Platinum Club partner of Stoke City FC, Q-railing were proud to be involved in this project, which greatly improves the match-day experience for disabled fans. The railings were installed by local metal fabricator Xtraweld Services.

Balcony railing for high-level disabled bays The bet365 Stadium redevelopment included the creation of several new disabled bays – two high up in the stands and three more at pitch side – and the addition of super-risers in existing bays. Balcony railings were installed in each of the locations to ensure safety and a totally clear view, even when other spectators are standing. The disabled bays now fully comply with the latest recommendations of the Accessible Stadia Guide.

The project, which had to be completed before the start of the new Premier League season, has closed off one of the previously exposed corners of the stands. Additional seating in this area has

increased the ground capacity from just over 27,000 to 30,000. Two new LED screens have been constructed: one suspended above the new seating and another in the opposite corner of the stands.

In the bet365 Stadium project, 250 metres of Easy Glass Pro have been installed, with 21.52 mm SentryGlas®. Each glass panel is aligned with the others, thanks to Q-railing’s ingenious Safety Wedge system.

Incorporated in the base shoe, this feature allows panels to be individually adjusted.

Installation of Easy Glass Pro is straightforward, the whole process can be carried out from inside the railing. With no scaffolding required, it is ideal for high-level locations. The system can cope with the most challenging of construction scenarios, there are five different base shoe models available: two for top mounting and three for fascia mounting.

Easy Glass Pro has been used in Q-railing projects all over the world. It can be found in a huge diversity of settings, both indoor and outdoor, fulfilling many different roles.

Common User Towers for HighRise Projects The solution to access requirements for personnel and materials during construction.

High-rise tower projects are on the up in and around London and the numbers are rising still. According to the 2017 London Tall Buildings survey, there are now 455 towers in the pipeline, of which 420 are marked out for residential.

With the number of new skyscrapers and tower developments transforming the capital’s skyline already, and this number set to climb further in the next few years, contractors need efficient and fit for purpose access solutions more than ever before. Common user towers and hoists make the construction of high-rise structures (up to 300m high) more efficient in terms of cost, time and money and greatly improve building logistics.

Brogan Group are one of the few access contractors in the capital that can offer design, hire and installation of common user towers – a dynamic access solution that eases the construction of tower designs drastically.

A Common user Tower is a temporary structure tied to a high-rise building during construction that enables all hoisting facilities to be arranged around and tied to it. Only the common tower itself is tied into the main structure, providing a common access area for all trades and goods, whilst reducing the need to leave openings for access into the building. Hoists can be attached to all three of the open sides of the tower and many also incorporate an escape staircase.

Employing common user towers affords maximum capacity for the transport of materials and personnel to optimum working heights of the building with minimum interference.

Rapid fit outs are enabled as the tower/ hoist system allows contractors to fully exploit floor level openings and optimise the use of the floor heights when distributing cladding and installing prefabricated pods. The deck level can be set either flush with the slab level or above it depending on requirements.

ROCKWOOL reacts to post-Grenfell Tower fire guidance UK Department of Communities and Local Government issues post-Grenfell fire guidance. ROCKWOOL welcomes the guidance while raising concerns about the tests on which it’s based and advocating for changes in UK building regulations.

We welcome the DCLG’s consolidated advice to building owners following its series of full-scale fire tests – particularly the guidance that ‘one way to ensure that a cladding system adequately resists external fire spread is for all of the relevant elements of the wall to be of limited combustibility’. The combination of A2 limited combustibility cladding and noncombustible stone wool insulation is a good example of such a solution.

This test series was designed to give owners of potentially unsafe buildings immediate guidance on reducing fire risk based on current UK regulations. While certainly relevant, the tests were nevertheless conducted under ideal conditions that do not reflect real-world construction experience, nor allow for a margin of error either in installation or material performance over time. The test results’ value as a guide for the significant regulatory changes that are required is therefore limited.

The fact that more than 95 percent of buildings screened and covered by the large scale tests fail to meet current fire safety standards clearly demonstrates the ambiguity, complexity, and confusion that exists among landlords and local authorities regarding compliance with the standards as well as an urgent need for clearer guidance on UK building regulations.

Current UK regulations and practice have allowed tall buildings to be wrapped in combustible cladding and insulation. We believe that to truly ensure public safety and building resilience, the UK should adopt a simple binary system – with building materials classified as either combustible or non-combustible. We also believe the UK should follow the example set elsewhere in Europe that only non-combustible cladding and insulation be allowed on mid- to high-rise buildings. This system would be a simple, easily implemented, and effective way to safeguard lives and property.

We fully support the DCLG advice from 02 August 2017, which states ‘An obvious option to ensure that the cladding system adequately resists external fire spread, is to replace the system with one where all of the elements of the wall are of limited combustibility’. We believe this should become the standard required for all UK buildings taller than 18 metres as well as for public buildings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.

Individuals, organisations and authorities responsible for or living in tall buildings should ask themselves whether it makes sense to wrap their buildings in combustible materials. It’s hard for us to imagine a scenario where it’s worth taking that risk.

Current UK regulations and practice have allowed tall buildings to be wrapped in combustible cladding and insulation.

We believe that to truly ensure public safety and building resilience, the UK should adopt a simple binary system – with building materials classified as either combustible or non-combustible.

Historic chimneys restored at Battersea The painting of all four chimneys at Battersea Power is now complete in the exact colour of the originals.

All four of Battersea Power Station’s chimneys had to be painstakingly dismantled and rebuilt, following completion of detailed surveys, very close consultation and engagement with Historic England and the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Rob Tincknell, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, commented: “It is wonderful to see the chimneys, which have become a permanent fixture on the London skyline, freshly painted and the finishing touches applied. This is a great opportunity to thank the BPS team, the specialist contractor and everyone else who was involved in ensuring one of the most important parts of the redevelopment project was successfully completed.”

Cllr Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “An exciting new skyline is developing at Battersea but it is fantastic to see our old friends, the Power Station chimneys, restored to their former glory: a proud landmark for Wandsworth and for London. Across the Mersey In the North West of England, Heightsafe Systems have been involved in the design, supply and install of a complete, safe roof access system for Seacombe Ferry Terminal. Most commonly know from the Beatles song Ferry Across the Mersey, the terminal forms a central part of the famous ferry service from Wirral to Liverpool and has been running since the 1800’s.

Seacombe Ferry’s Terminal roof slopes are very steeply pitched and are therefore virtually impossible to access.

Heightsafe Systems took on the challenge and installed levelled aluminium walkways, sitting on bespoke fabricated brackets as well as installing restraint safety lines. By installing these safety lines, workers will be protected from reaching a fall area when walking along the perimeter of the roof space. Heightsafe Systems have provided a safe working area, in what may look like a dangerous working environment surrounded in the most part by the River Mersey.

As Heightsafe Systems can provide bespoke services and special project fabrication, Merseytravel (owners of Seacombe Ferry Terminal) opted for some additional features to their structural and robust aluminium walkway.

To allow ease of access for gutters underneath and any ongoing maintenance, individual panels

were specifically designed to be lifted on a hinge.

Industry innovator set to end year with record growth A manufacturer and installer of innovative hoarding solutions is set to end the year with record hire figures.

WSP to improve southern connectivity with Great Western project appointment The south of England and Wales is set to gain increased route capacity, performance and greater connectivity as the next phase of work begins by WSP on the main Great Western lines in the region.

This next phase of the Greater West infrastructure and rolling stock programme will focus on delivering upgrades to the Great Western main line high-speed routes from Paddington to Newbury, Oxford, Bristol, south Wales and the Cotswolds.

Work for the £2.3m contract is due to be completed by March 31, 2019; it continues the specialist work WSP has previously carried-out on the programme for the past three-years.

The project will see the biggest step change in capability on the Western route, culminating in a new timetable aimed to improve journey times on high speed routes and increase capacity on regional services.

Plans for this latest upgrade will enable the introduction of electric commuter services between London Paddington and Reading as well as Didcot and Newbury. Whilst services in Bristol and the west country can expect to see improvements to the infrastructure that will allow bigger and longer trains.

Global consultancy WSP, will provide programme integration support to the Greater West Programme and Heathrow Rail Access by achieving greater clarity in communication and an improved understanding of programme objectives for stakeholders.

The reappointment is testament to the hard work carried-out by the WSP Rail System Engineering and Integration team for the last three years and it is a sincere commendation from the industry for our contribution.

Reducing Utility Strikes Construction companies work hard to avoid striking buried cables and pipes when they excavate – the reasons are obvious: cable strikes can cause harm to workers, as well as damage to underground utilities.

A key element in reducing the rate of damage to buried cables and pipes has been logging the data collected by advanced Cable Avoidance Tools (CATs), and using that data to improve on-site behaviour. For several years, managers and supervisors have been able to recover data logs from CATs and see how well they have been used. Major contractors who have incorporated this into their standard work practices have consistently reported reductions in the rate of damage when excavating.

Despite this success, contractors have discovered two big obstacles to realising further improvements:

1. no easy way to collect data from all their operators and analyse it comparatively, and, a delay between the CATs being used, and the data being analysed.

2. Both these obstacles are serious problems. If it’s onerous to collect all the data, and to perform comparisons then it is much less likely to be done.

The process can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. Not every team will have access to a suitable computer and internet connection to upload the data, and these end-of-day tasks can be overlooked. For larger contractors, these challenges are particularly severe.

The greater the delayy between poor practice occurring and it being identified, the greater the expossure to the risk of cable strikes. Some companies have worked to address th hese obstacles with changes to workking practices, for example having daily uploads of data, or using a mo obile app to e-mail the results to a central server.

However, these apprroaches do not address the burden of data collection and aggreg gation, or the need for rapid analysis.

The way forward To overcome these challenges, a leading g manufacturer of cable avoidance tools, Radiodetection n, has developed a revolutionary system m that requires minimal intervention n to collect and consolidate the data ffor allll CAT CATs iin a company. The system must comply with legislation regarding the transmission and storage of personal information, and it must also ensure the confidential company information is kept secure and private.

In just six weeks Timber Expo, the UK’s only event dedicated exclusively to Timber, will return to Birmingham NEC from 10 – 12 October 2017. Not to be missed, this year’s show will explore the latest advances across the industry and offer visitors a first look at some of the latest products, applications and innovations from across Europe.

At a time when building materials and regulations are under scrutiny it is now more than ever before crucial for the industry to take a proactive step toward educating and inspiring those that work in the built environment.
