Report Reveals that Almost Half of all UK Works Put Workers at Risk of Striking Underground Assets Text According to a new report, 44% of all excavation work in the UK takes place without a thorough underground asset search, putting site workers at constant risk of injuries caused by accidently striking utility infrastructure such as electrical cables or gas pipelines.

The report, Digging Up Britain, by LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD), has revealed that despite there being a 27% increase in location-specific searches between 2016 and 2017, only 2.25 million of the estimated 4 million work projects which took place last year included a thorough search for the utility assets which might be present underground.

Of those searches, 305,542 were made in relation to highways works – an increase of 23% on 2016. The nature of the works ranged from enquiries relating to street furniture (120,652), resurfacing (56,185), road/track construction (12,840) and traffic calming measures (2,322).

Richard Broome, Managing Director of LSBUD, comments: “Inadvertently hitting an electrical cable or a gas pipeline can cause lifechanging injuries to unfortunate highways workers and, during the five years to 2017, 318 injuries (including fatalities) caused by underground electrical cable strikes were reported to the HSE with many more likely to have gone unreported.”

The report also highlights that the number of safety related electrical incidents reported to the HSE almost doubled to 1,244 in 2016/17 while the number of reported pipeline strikes in the last five years reached 6,746.

Richard Broome continues: “These figures show why it’s so vital that comprehensive utility asset searches become recognised as standard practice when firms are planning and preparing for any works involving digging. Alongside this, all asset owners must protect their infrastructure by doing everything they can to make access to their data easy for those third parties that need it to work safely. It is only by doing both these things that we can better protect workers and manage and reduce the vulnerability of our national utility infrastructure.”

LSBUD’s report reveals that the risk of strikes comes from many fronts. The highest volume of searches by sector came from firms working on behalf of telecoms companies, with just under 800,000 searches made during 2017. Using LSBUD’s data as an indicator of all work being carried out in the UK, it can therefore be said that over a third (35%) of all works being undertaken relate to the telecoms sector.

Water companies and their contractors

generated the second highest volume of search enquiries during 2017. The six most prolific regional water suppliers requested details of underground assets on 523,043 occasions – 23% of all searches made last year.

Using LSBUD’s data to build an accurate picture of the UK’s construction activity, the report also shows that 80% of searches carried out were to inform utility work and 13% related to highways works. Government drives to increase housing provision and reduce flooding meant that searches ordered for housing projects rose by 34% in 2017, while there was also a 17% leap in work relating to watercourses.

Richard Broome concludes: “The sheer volume of work taking place across the country means that the risk to our utility

infrastructure is coming from all directions and asset owners cannot possibly keep track of all the work going on that might affect their infrastructure. The most effective way to mitigate this is by ensuring information about asset location is made available to as wide an audience as possible. LSBUD facilitates that and we’re delighted that over 70 asset owners including the National Grid, UK Power Networks, WPD, SGN, Northumbrian Water and the majority of the major electricity, gas and fuel networks are already seeing the benefits of being registered with us. Whilst we’re still some way off reaching our goal of having all asset owners making their information available through us, we believe that the insights revealed by our report will help other asset owners understand the wider benefits of protecting their network of assets through the service.”

Latest News THE APPRENTICE WINNER, JAMES WHITE, LAUNCHES NEW PROPERTY & CONSTRUCTION DIVISION Six months after securing a £250,000 investment from business mogul Lord Sugar, The Apprentice winner, James White, has expanded Right Time Recruitment with a new Property & Construction division.

The IT recruitment firm, which offers expertise in specialist recruitment, has now developed a Property & Construction division to cover permanent recruitment solutions, including contract and contract-topermanent recruitment solutions.

The new division showcases the firm’s keen focus within Quantity Surveying, growing into Project Management and Site Management.

The aim of this new avenue gives Right Time Recruitment the ability to cover a national portfolio of clients that range from small consultancies to large multi-disciplinaries.

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY NEEDS WOMEN ONSITE, NOT OUT OF SIGHT, TO BRIDGE SKILLS GAP In the past few years significant progress has been made to make the construction industry accessible to women; whether that be lowering the gender pay-gap or increasing the amount of jobs on offer.

Whilst the changes are positive and reassuring, there are still some gender imbalances which need addressing.

Baumit, a global building materials manufacturer, is making a commendable effort to make the sector more inclusive for women, standing as a fine example of how the construction industry is levellingout gender biases in the sector.

Whilst the construction industry appears to be heading in the right direction, with women currently accounting for 18.8% of the sector’s workforce compared to 12.1% a decade ago, the figures still show how building and associated trades predominantly remain a man’s world.

This is an issue that urgently needs to be addressed, and companies should be focusing on how they can change this.

The industry is missing a trick by not tapping into the largely ignored talent pool at its disposal, and further attention needs to be paid to how women can access jobs

within the construction industry. Whether by learning the skills to be a plasterer or becoming head of marketing for a building company, there are plenty of opportunities for women. They just need to be highlighted and made available.

A survey commissioned by house builder Keepmoat, for example, revealed that only 13% of women aged 16 to 25 would consider a career in construction. To find out why this figure is so low, certain questions need to be raised. For example, are women not encouraged to enter the industry, or are they simply not being given the right opportunities to make construction their career?

Baumit’s current employment ratio of men to women is almost at 50%, showcasing how the company is leading a new generation of building manufacturers that are bringing women into the job sector. At Baumit, employees are hired on merit and credibility and the company is a known advocate for equal pay in the construction industry. Research carried out in 2016 by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors found that on average men earned £11,000 more than women in a similar role. This

was up from a pay gap of £7,000 in the same survey a year earlier. At Baumit, both men and women in the same roles are paid similar rates, and both female and male employees are given equal opportunities.

This equal environment allows women to cultivate their skillset while working for one of the leading innovators in the built environment.

It is important that the construction industry continues to make positive attempts to promote inclusivity in the sector. Organisations such as Women in Roofing seek to inspire and support young women hoping to make their way into the trade. Hopefully, organisations such as this will help dismantle perceptions about the sector being inherently male. The annual Women in Construction conference is another important step, providing a space for discussion on equal rights and female representation throughout the industry.

Change is happening because of these timely and honest conversations, but in the meantime, Baumit remains a testament to equal opportunities and gender equality in the construction workplace.

Wyboston Lakes Resort awards multi-million pound construction contract to Revo Wyboston Lakes Resort, the UK’s largest privately owned single site conference and leisure venue, has awarded the multimillion pound construction contract to carry out the comprehensive upgrade of its meeting and events spaces to Revo Leisure Services.

Work is already underway and is scheduled for completion in March 2019.

Synergy Architects Ltd were commissioned to assess ways the existing building, which opened in 1998, could be adapted sensibly to accommodate the latest trends in conferences in the 21st century and meet the needs of the latest and future generations of conference delegates. Their plans encompass a comprehensive interior refit to modernise and upgrade the facilities

sensitively and in keeping with the existing building.

The construction work will double the size of the main function space of the Woodlands Event Centre to accommodate up to 300 people and include internal reorganisation of the meetings and break out areas, providing a fresh modern look with current finishes and high spec tech. Matching ceiling heights, installing movable walls to expand training rooms and pillar-less views are some of the unique architectural features to be implemented. A Paddy & Scott’s Coffee Shop will also be constructed within the revised footprint.

Bennetts chosen for HB Villages apartments project Aluminium glazing specialists Bennett Architectural have been chosen to work on a new 28 apartment scheme from HB Villages for people living with disabilities.

Oak House, based on College Road in Birmingham, was the site of a former care home and will be adapted for people living with physical disabilities or learning development challenges.

Bennetts is working alongside main contractor Lovell and Calderpeel architects, providing Kawneer AA100 curtain walling and doors on the £4m scheme.

Lionel Grant, Managing Director at Bennett Architectural commented “We’re delighted to be working on the brand new apartment scheme from HB Villages, which will provide a state of the art facility for people living with disabilities. As always we will ensure that we’re providing the highest quality of work and service.”

Galliford Try appointed to £500m highways framework Galliford Try has secured a place on the new edition of the Midlands Highways Alliance framework. The total value of the work is £500m over the four-year term which will be shared among four contractors.

The framework is operated by a regional highways maintenance procurement partnership which covers 21 local authorities. Galliford Try was first appointed to the framework for its previous edition in 2014. The programme will encompass delivery of the whole lifecycle of road

projects including road reconfigurations, resurfacing, waterproofing, enabling works, and design and delivery of new bridges and carriageways.

Four 108-tonne bridge beams lifted into place as part of bypass project Four 41-metre long, 108-tonne bridge beams were lifted into place this past weekend during a twelve-hour Market Rasen to Lincoln rail line closure possession.

Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said: “This is a huge milestone in the construction of the new bridge in Greetwell. Not only does it show we’re making significant progress in getting the new crossing completed, but it shows that we’re making big strides with the bypass, overall. Now that the beams are in place, Galliford Try will start building the bridge deck over the next eleven weeks, with a view to the whole bridge being complete by the end of October. From then, we can start using it to transport materials over the rail line for use elsewhere onsite.”

As part of the work, the Market Rasen

to Lincoln rail line was closed as a crew of twenty specialist operatives worked with a 1200-tonne crane to safely place the beams above the rail line.

Below are some facts and figures about the bridge beams and the new bridge, itself: • All the bridge sections were manufactured by Braithwaite Engineers Ltd in Newport, South Wales • When complete, the bridge deck will have span for 40m over the existing Market Rasen to Lincoln railway lines • The bridge beam sections were assembled next to the new bridge supports and lifted into place using a 1200-tonne mobile crane • The bridge deck will be constructed using heavily-reinforced concrete • A total of around 30,000 work hours have been spent on the road

bridge project to date, including the manufacture of the bridge beams Cllr Davies added: “Getting the beams lifted into place and constructing the bridge deck is just one of the many important jobs happening on-site at the moment. This month, we’ve also started stripping soil across the site and starting the bulk earthworks, as well as making a start with constructing the new Greetwell Road roundabout. The scheme as a whole is progressing ahead very well, and we’re still on track for having the new road open by May 2020.”

The Lincoln Eastern Bypass project is part-funded by a £50m Central Government capital grant and aims to minimise traffic congestion, support Lincoln’s growth as a principal urban centre, and enhance the inter-city environment.

NORTHAMPTON CARPENTER IS BRITAIN’S TOP TRADESPERSON 2018 It’s your time to shine Stuart Roache – the Northampton carpenter has been officially crowned Britain’s Top Tradesperson 2018.

He said: “It feels totally surreal. I didn’t have any expectations on Friday and was just determined to enjoy the experience.”

The married Father of three scooped one of the trade industry’s most coveted awards during a grand final held at the world famous Twickenham Stadium on Friday. The competition is organised by omnichannel retailer Screwfix and supported by Mitsubishi Motors.

Stuart qualified in both joinery and plumbing after training at night college for six-years after deciding on a career change at the age of 30.

More than 3,000 people entered the annual contest, first launched in 2009, but it was Stuart, who trades under the name Abington Home Maintenance who triumphed, impressing judges with his passion, his commitment to customer service and his desire to support adult learners.

Caroline Welsh, Director of Brand and Marketing at Screwfix said: “It was a tough decision this year as our 11 finalists were outstanding in their trade but Stuart’s passion for customer service and dedication to his trade was overwhelming. As a late starter into the trade himself he is also devoted to supporting adult learners and plans to recruit and train them so they are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to also succeed. Stuart is a true people’s champion and a very worthy winner.”

For his achievement, married Fatherof-three Stuart not only collects the prestigious title of Britain’s Top Tradesperson, he also gets a Mitsubishi L200 Warrior pick-up truck worth £33,000.

“Putting myself through college while running a family was hard but the support I got from my wife, who is my rock, and my children made me determined to succeed. Because I started from scratch and know how difficult it can be to retrain and learn something new and make that work, I just want to give others the opportunity to achieve the same as I did. I love my job and I wouldn’t change it for the world. My customers are my everything because without them I’d be nowhere, that’s why I always aim to deliver the highest standards of service.”

Rob Lindley, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK commented: “Reaching the final of any national competition is a huge achievement but to make the grade in a competition as fiercely contested as this, against so many talented and dedicated tradespeople, is truly an accomplishment to be very, very proud of.”

During Friday’s grand-final multitradeswoman Christina Valentine from Epsom and heating engineer Ben Kuchta from Nuneaton were also highly commended by the judges.

MARTIN-BROOKS APPRENTICE WINS CONSTRUCTION AWARD Sheffield roofing specialists, MartinBrooks, are celebrating after one of their trainees bagged a prestigious local award celebrating the talents of young tradespeople.

Korneliusz Kasa was presented with the Construction and Technical prize at the Sheffield City Council Apprenticeship Awards 2018.

Martin-Brooks’ managing director, John Elmore, accompanied Korneliusz to a special ceremony, held at Sheffield Town Hall, at which the winners were announced. He also collected a certificate of commendation for the firm recognising its efforts in nurturing a top performing apprentice.

Korneliusz was praised by the judges for his positive attitude to work and further education, along with his drive and determination to succeed. He is undertaking a roofing apprenticeship at Martin-Brooks with day release at Sheffield College and is expected to complete his NVQ level two in just 18 months.

John Elmore said: “We were keen to put Korneliusz forward for this award, as he has shown maturity and professionalism beyond his years since the day we interviewed him. To receive independent commendation of his efforts is the icing on the cake. He is a credit to the firm and particularly his mentors on site, who are helping him become a highly competent roofer.”

Project News LAMINGTON GROUP SECURES PLANNING PERMISSION TO DEVELOP LISTED MISSION HALL INTO FLEXIBLE WORKSPACE Hammersmith-based property developers Lamington Group and HUT Architecture are pleased to announce they have secured planning permission and listed building consent to redevelop and refurbish the Grade II listed building at 41 Iffley Road, Hammersmith into nearly 7,000 sq ft of Grade A office accommodation.

The former mission hall, which dates from 1883-4, was used as a set painter’s studio from 1966 to 2014, and is now being reimagined as a flexible workplace for the creative industries.

Works will open up the hall, extend the basement and insert a new mezzanine level to create an open plan floor space and bring a new viewpoint to the unique vaulted roof.

In addition, complete restoration works of the listed building will be carried out, including stonework, metal work glazing and paintwork. The property will be marketed for pre-letting this autumn, and completion is expected mid-2020.

The renovation will offer a boost to the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) with increased employment opportunities and longer-term benefits to the area. The development has the potential for over £2.1m of economic multiplier benefit once open.

Balfour Beatty lands luxury residential scheme in London Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, has been selected by Brockton Capital to deliver the new, luxury 60 Curzon Street residential scheme.

Located in the heart of London’s exclusive Mayfair district, Balfour Beatty will draw on its experience in operating within a constrained city-centre environment, to deliver 32 luxury apartments formed around a south-facing courtyard garden, as well as a range of private 24 hour amenities.

Throughout the project lifecycle, Balfour Beatty will utilise the latest digital solutions, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) to generate and manage vital information on site and efficiently deliver the scheme with minimal disruption to local residents and the community alike.

Lake Lothing Third Crossing reaches an important milestone On Friday 10th August, The Planning Inspectorate accepted the application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) for Lake Lothing Third Crossing. This will now start the examination process and continue the involvement of engineering and professional services consultant WSP, bringing the project a step closer to reaching consent.

Lake Lothing Third crossing is a new lifting road bridge proposed in Lowestoft, Suffolk, which will alleviate traffic on the Strategic Road Network. This is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, which requires a Development Consent Order in order to achieve planning approval.

being granted by the Secretary of State for Transport, construction could begin in 2019-2020 with the £100m bridge opening as soon as 2022.

WSP will continue to be involved with the scheme through the examination process, as well as being advisors to Suffolk County Council during detailed design.

Consultants WSP have provided a multidisciplinary range of services for the project since 2015 including structures, highways, maritime, land referencing, consultation and stakeholder engagement, environmental disciplines, landscape and urban design, town planning, geotechnical, 3D visualisation, transport planning, intelligent transport systems, quantity surveying and project management. Collaboratively the team at WSP have produced the preliminary design for the scheme, environmental statement, consultation report and other key documents for the application.

COTSWOLD CAFÉ EXTENDED USING STEEL SCREENS FROM SWA MEMBER Longborough in Gloucestershire is located in one of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes, with a unique architectural style that uses mellow limestone walls containing metal framed windows. This heritage continues with a member of the Steel Window Association having recently been called upon to supply W20 screens and doors for the extension of a popular café and food store.

Cotswold Casements is based five miles away in Moreton-in-Marsh and has developed a good working relationship with local builder, Nathan Clarke: carrying out the design, manufacture and installation of three screens at the Cotswold Food Store in Longborough, the largest measuring just over three metres wide by 2.2 metres high.

With the central screen including a double door and each side screen having top opening casements to allow ventilation into the café, this contract demonstrates the full potential of W20 profiles. The slim section size offers optimum glass area to maximise light entering any building; while offering a distinctive appearance.

Schöck meets curved balcony challenge in Docklands When the Royal Victoria Dock finally closed to commercial shipping during the 1980s, it resulted in widespread dereliction and unemployment in that part of East London.

At the time it would have been totally inconceivable that just over a generation later, the Royal Victoria would witness such remarkable and vibrant change. The latest landmark and part of the £1.2 billion transformation masterplan, is Gateway Tower (previously Pump Tower), just a few hundred yards west of the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. With its striking series of curved forms, it is an intriguing example of modern urban design. The 73 metre high, 24-storey mixed-use scheme provides 161 spaciously designed apartments and penthouses, with office and retail space at ground level sitting over an underground car park. apartment features a terrace, a winter garden style ‘sun lounge’, or a balcony. The design specifications on the project were demanding and the avoidance of thermal bridging at any of the critical connectivity points was naturally a key consideration.

To counter any such problems, the widely used Schöck Isokorb structural thermal break element for concrete-to-concrete applications was incorporated – but there was an installation challenge or two.

Curved façade meant a tight radius The first being that there was a tight radius in which to position the thermal breaks, due to the unusual curved styling on the façade.

To resolve the issue, the Schöck Isokorbs were supplied with alternating depths of rebar and 35 mm and 50 mm concrete cover to the tension bars.

This allowed the rebar in the Isokorb to sit underneath the internal slab reinforcement and not clash with the bars from the Isokorbs on either side of each unit.

In addition, Schöck also had to create a bespoke unit for one of the balcony types, where a beam was introduced to the balcony by the Structural Engineer, to reduce the deflection of the slab. The thermal break had

Totally verifiable performance The product type used at Gateway Tower is for concrete-to-concrete, but the comprehensive Isokorb range from Schöck also offers solutions for concrete-to-steel situations, a modular product for steel-tosteel applications – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. When any Isokorb product type is incorporated into residential buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Products meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations, have NHBC approval and offer LABC Registration.

THE CONNECTED HOME AND ELECTRIC HEATING What is the connected home

Many thought it was a passing fad and that it wouldn’t amount to much. But with the recent popularity of Amazon Echo, it doesn’t look like it is going away anytime soon! The connected home refers to gadgets and appliances that can be controlled remotely. Using WiFi, the homeowner can control devices via their mobile, tablet or computer. With the ability to communicate with each other, individual items such as heating systems, lights and security cameras begin to form an ecosystem in the home. This allows appliances and systems to sense and anticipate your needs and seamlessly work together to meet your preferences.

WiFi Remote Control

With more devices connected to WiFi than ever before, not only does this give you control but it provides access to data no matter where you are. For example, you can see your energy consumption in realtime on your phone or watch home security footage from your computer at work. This data can be used to modify behaviour on an individual level. For example, activity tracking stats may encourage you to walk more during the day. Information about your heating costs, may remind to close doors behind you or turn the temperature down 1 degree. Data can also be aggregated and utilised on a larger scale by companies to spot trends and trigger warning systems.

Amazon Echo

Alexa by Amazon Echo is a voice activated, cloud based device that can play music, answer questions and give you the weather forecast.

Alexa learns your speech patterns the more you talk to her, and also gets to know your preferences. It can also work with home devices such as lights, switches, TV’s and thermostats.

If that’s not enough, Alexa can also learn ‘skills’ such as ordering flowers and pizza!

JAMES TAKES UP ROLE AS NEW NOTTINGHAM LEAD FOR CURTINS EXPERIENCED engineer, James Garment, has taken up the role of Nottingham office lead for engineering consultancy, Curtins.

Technical director James has been with the firm for more than five years and will now head up its Nottingham office, leading its 30-strong team of experts in delivering a range of schemes across the region and further afield for its clients.

Leading Tile Specialist Strengthens Team with New Appointment Tile distributor, Ceramique Internationale, has expanded its experienced team with the appointment of a new Specification Sales Executive for the Northern region.

Michelle Foreman joins the senior sales team with a specific remit to work with housebuilders and developers across the region. She will be responsible for building Ceramique Internationale’s sales, nurturing the company’s existing accounts and furthering relationships in the housebuilding sector.

Michelle, originally from Leeds and currently living in Bradford, joins the Ceramique Internationale team from PID systems where she dealt exclusively with housebuilders across the North on their onsite security systems.

The future of the surface preparation industry If you ask someone how the floor in their house was prepared, how much do you think they could tell you? In the construction industry, preparation is as important as the final product. So, the industry must change to increase the awareness of proper surface preparation and support its growth. Here, Claude Besson, country manager for France at surface preparation equipment specialist, National Flooring Equipment explains how the industry is set to change in the future.

It is unlikely that someone would know how the floors in their house were prepared.

However, under the tiling, carpet, hardwood flooring or other covering, the concrete must be properly cleaned and prepared to make sure the new floor stays secure. It is not surprising that homeowners aren’t aware — the flooring industry also knows little about surface preparation.

Current challenges Many people are unaware of the importance of proper surface preparation.

During a renovation, some contractors only sweep the surface or rush preparation before laying the new coating — as that is all the customer will see.

Inefficient surface preparation and lack of awareness has put an economical strain on the industry. Contractors either have little knowledge of the industry or, those who do know about it undercharge for their work because of lack of awareness of its importance.

Surface preparation is also struggling because of traditional views of the industry.

The working conditions can be a challenge as the jobsite is often dirty, dusty and the working hours are inconvenient.

Traditionally, surface preparation is also a labour-intensive industry, as companies prefer to hire labour rather than invest in equipment.

Industry associations need to make equipment manufacturers, distributors and contractors aware that it doesn’t have to be like this. If we demand that trade associations should bring in new training schemes, safety and environmental regulations for the industry, surface preparation will change for the better.

Looking ahead If the associations do make changes, we are set for a revolution in surface preparation.

The demand for housing and modern infrastructure is increasing and with the right equipment, expertise and regulations, the surface preparation industry can grow with the global construction industry.

As the surface preparation industry grows, it will also gain recognition for its importance and become more attractive. In the next ten years, contractors will require more quality equipment and engineering experience on the jobsite to improve productivity. We also need a more qualified and knowledgeable workforce to make the most of this technology.

Only companies that embrace change will survive this growth. If they choose not to adapt and refuse to invest in talent or equipment, they will be left behind. To avoid this, companies should invest in training, monitor and adapt to market trends and acquire the right expertise and equipment to improve productivity and working conditions.

Technology Advances in technology enable contractors to meet the growing demands of their customers. Currently, contractors remove coverings using shanks or blades attached to walk-behind or ride-on scrapers. As more advanced technology supports the growth of the construction industry, we may see similar changes in surface preparation.

20 years ago, contractors were using manpowered push along scrapers that had little to no safety features. Now, manufacturers provide multiple types of plug-in or fuelpowered floor removal machines that all attach to dust collectors. In the next two decades, we will see more changes to how we prepare substrates for new coverings.

Contractors should visit trade shows to understand the range of equipment available to them as well as sharing expertise and monitoring market trends. This will ensure that they are not left behind as the industry changes.

Other industries use lasers for surface treatment this could be a new way to treat concrete. Chemicals could be ideal for removing glue, paint or dirt from a substrate without the noise or vibration of machines. However, the industry needs to manufacture a safe chemical to keep workers and customers safe.

High pressure water could also efficiently prepare concrete for a new covering if manufacturers can develop a way to capture and recycle the water to keep it off the jobsite.

Competitiveness As well as investing in the right technology, companies need to focus on their service offering to remain competitive in the surface preparation industry.

The internet will become more important for businesses that want to communicate

with these global customers. They can share their expertise by posting helpful training assets as well as success stories and advice on social media. Manufacturers can also benefit from developing apps to give distributors and contractors the information they need to select the right machines for each application.

Manufacturers should also approach different distribution channels to increase the number of contractors who can access their equipment. They can approach general rental companies, demolition equipment distributors, paint dealers and more.

The workforce More services and more advanced equipment requires a more knowledgeable workforce. Contractors must invest in proper training to be able to correctly choose and efficiently use the advancing equipment.

Contractors also need to be more performance driven. They need to correctly communicate, promote and quote their jobs to ensure they improve productivity both in the job itself and the service they offer.

By adapting now, businesses can fully embrace the changing industry and be a part of its growth over the next twenty years.

Over this time, equipment will be built to improve productivity and avoid downtime, as it will need little to no maintenance.

Equipment may also be remote-controlled so that it can run without breaks as the operator monitors it away from the jobsite.

This will reduce fatigue and risk of injury for workers. In the next 20 years we will also see cleaner jobsites with less harmful substances, such as silica, in the air.

Equipment will capture dust at the source, stopping it from becoming airborne.

Most people do not realise how much work went into preparing the floor they are stood on. However, the only way to change people’s view of surface preparation is to demand change. Manufacturers, distributors and contractors must request improvements in education, equipment and service offering to increase awareness of the importance of surface preparation and support its growth.

Pockets of tech investment won’t cure construction’s dwindling productivity, expert warns Construction firms must look at improving efficiencies across all operating systems in order to meet targets, rather than investing in pockets of activity, according to insight from Engage Technology Partners.

Following calls from the House of Lord’s Science and Technology Committee for the sector to increase its use of offsite manufacturing and other new technologies in order to improve productivity, the software and service supplier has warned that a focus on such outputs alone won’t deliver the required increase in production.

Drey Francis, Director at Engage explains: “While investing in more efficient processes such as offsite manufacturing is certainly a step in the right direction, this alone won’t solve the problem of hard to meet targets. There’s immense stress on the industry at the moment,

with a high demand of expectations and low availability of talent. What we need to see is a greater focus on the use of technology across the entire construction remit, rather than just pockets of investment in the likes of offsite manufacturing.

For example, small steps in back office systems which provide real-time, transparent data can help firms keep project costings on track, identify staffing shortages early on and, ultimately, ensure completion targets are more likely to be met.

If we look at examples from other sectors – such as travel and entertainment – it’s clear that the integration of technology across all areas of the business can help a firm thrive. With pressure on the sector set to increase, now really is the time for construction to play catch up.”

Construction growth continues but Hammerson’s debacle may halt momentum - BLP Insurance comments on latest PMI: Following the release of the latest Construction PMI figures, Phil Harris, Director at BLP Insurance, comments on why construction sector growth is masking some fundamental issues in the industry: “In July, new orders continued to be the main driver of sector growth, as a result of the continuing high demand for residential housing.

Consumer confidence is still relatively strong, boosted by the government’s commitment to deliver on housing.

Other green shoots of optimism include the build-to-rent (BTR) market, which is continuing to gain momentum, especially in regional areas.

“Despite impressive performance over July and the summer period, there remain some short term and longerterm challenges for the industry to tackle. The potential effect of Brexit is still impossible to quantify. This is

having a tangible drag on the market, causing a perpetual mire of indecision over the short and medium term.

“While employment numbers were the strongest since December 2015, the skills shortage shows little sign of abating, leading to increasing labour costs as the availability of tradespeople shrinks further and wages rise.

Combined with increasing material leadtimes, development is being hindered, especially in the residential market where supply is failing to meet demand.

“July was another strong month for commercial activity but the sector remains vulnerable to volatility. British retailers continue to close shops at a pace and the full impact of shopping centre developer, Hammerson’s failed takeover of rival Intu may have yet to be fully felt. With many predicting the closure of more Hammerson sites, growth in July may prove a false dawn.”

NFB: Vocational education powers the UK economy Speaking to the Commons Education Skills Committee, Skills Minister Anne Milton stated that the Department for Education and its providers need to make it clear the additional qualifications that learners get from T-levels.

Milton also said that many parents may “leave it a year” before recommending a new qualification to their children.

T-levels offer a unique opportunity to follow an educational path that employers really value. They can also offer an increased number of opportunities to learners who find traditional academic learning inappropriate.

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) welcomes this straightforward appraisal from the skills minister and hopes that the Government will redouble efforts to promote T-levels as a firstclass learning and career choice.

Technical education does not just offer more flexibility in learning, but an increased number of opportunities to students who do not believe that a traditional academic route suits them.

The increase in vocational opportunities at university shows that employers value employees who can actually do the job.

Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB, said: “T-levels offer a unique opportunity to follow an educational path that employers really value. They can also offer an increased number of opportunities to learners who find traditional academic learning inappropriate.

“Vocational education enables the training of skilled workers in innovative and crucial sectors of the economy. We must do more to convey this message to parents and schools.”

This traditionally means an increase in roadworks and delays as a result of further closures, reduced speed limits and increased congestion.

Today, Balfour Beatty has launched the latest of its policy papers, “Customer Driven: Delivering roads for the future”, presenting an alternative way of delivering highways works

to dramatically improve customer satisfaction, by evolving the way in which contractors deliver works.

While Highways England introduced a stronger focus on the customer, the road users, following its establishment in 2015, more is required; contractors must also broaden their customerfocused culture and play their part in responding to the evolving needs of the customer.

With eight key points and recommendations outlined within the paper, Balfour Beatty presents a number of ideas to address the issues, based around two key themes: • Improving the customer experience through better communications

Project News DEVELOPERS HARNESS INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES TO DELIVER HUNDREDS OF NEW HOMES IN SOUTHWARK REGENERATION AREA Leading property and construction consultants McBains today announced the completion and partial completion of two major multi-use developments in London’s Southwark Regeneration Area: Elephant One (Phase One) and Two Fifty One. McBains’s involvement in the Phase One redevelopment of Elephant One, Elephant and Castle, in London’s Zone 1, has stretched over a decade, and is the largest multi-discipline project the company has undertaken in the capital. The team has provided project management, contract administration and design services on the build from its early planning phase in 2007, through to its completion in June 2018.

The mixed-use development, situated opposite Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, was designed entirely in BIM

(Building Information Modelling) and its construction was fully coordinated by the design team, both on and off-site.

This method helped reduce activity and pressure on-site, benefiting the project and the local environment.

Comprising three towers, of 374 apartments, 270 student rooms and 12 commercial units – including an on-site Sainsbury’s superstore and GymBox –the development is one of city’s first build to rent (BTR) schemes.

The borough also recently saw a further sectional completion at Two Fifty One Southwark Bridge Road.

This project comprises a single 41-storey residential tower and a 7-storey office block – with the former delivering 338 apartments, across an array of tenures including affordable, private, premium and premium plus. It is being completed in five stages, with all of the 65 affordable and the majority of private tenure apartments being completed in March and May 2018. The penthouse suites will follow in August 2018, and the final touches to the external features are set be completed in October 2018.

Features at Two Fifty One include a communal lounge, gymnasium, club and conference rooms, a private cinema, a green wall and communal garden.

McBains supported the design team and contractor with the design and manufacture of concrete frames for both Elephant One and Two Fifty One, using a ‘Design for Manufacture and Assembly’ (DfMA) system developed by Laing O’Rourke. As employer agents and project managers, they also supervised installation on the 0.51 acre site.

Clive Docwra, Director at McBains, said: “Elephant One and Two Fifty One exemplify the growing appeal of this centrally-located borough and the need for new and improved housing stock. Elephant One carries particular importance for us, at McBains, in so much that it was our largest and most complex inter-disciplinary project to date. So, to have been involved in its development from start to finish, and to have played a part in one of Europe’s largest regeneration programmes, is a real coup.”

NORTH EAST CONCRETE MANUFACTURER CEMENTS ITS FUTURE AT LYNEFIELD PARK H-Mix, one of the first tenants to move to Lynefield Park, the site of the former Alcan Aluminium smelter plant, is looking towards future expansion with plans to increase production facilities supporting Harworth Group’s multi-million pound plans to regenerate the area.

The company, which serves the North East’s construction industry including homebuilders, civil engineering companies, builders’ merchants and general contractors, has bucked market trends and a decline in overall industry growth, with construction output reported as being down 1.7% in May 2018 (three months on three months series *ONS).

In contrast, H-Mix has seen concrete production at its Northumberland facility increase by 18% since January.

Formed in 2015, the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing business has recently recruited two new employees at its one acre, two plant site in order to meet demand from local and national customers. This has taken current numbers to eight along with 1.5 temporary staff. The company also has plans to increase production facilities at its Lynefield Park HQ with the possibility of new investment in external plant equipment, manufacturing capability and additional commercial space.

This would further support site owners, Harworth Group’s long-term vision to develop a strategic industrial zone attracting significant inward

investment, large manufacturing companies and creating a gateway and sustainable masterpan for South East Northumberland that encourages new employment and benefits the region and local communities.

It has a number of B1, B2 and B8 industrial units available ranging from 9,000 to 40,000 sq ft and can accommodate future units of up to 500,000 sq ft on a freehold or design and build basis.

Rudridge Gravesend welcomes new fleet of lorries Rudridge Gravesend has welcomed five new lorries to its delivery fleet.

The groundwork and materials supplier, which is one of the only companies of its type to provide a next day delivery service to its customers, has invested in five 32-tonne Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3240 Tridem 8x4 lorries. The grab loaders feature improved manoeuvrability meaning they are easier to handle in areas with restricted access, such as building sites. Each lorry is capable of a carrying capacity of 17 tonnes and has a HIAB X HiDuo 188 B-2 remote control crane, specifically chosen to handle the more

specialised civils materials supplied by Rudridge.

The lorries will operate alongside the branch’s existing vehicles – a 7.5 tonne Mercedes Canter and a Citroen van.

Craig Lyons, Branch Manager at Gravesend, said: “We are delighted with our new lorries.

Their arrival means we will be able to provide a more extensive delivery service to our customers, fulfil more orders and meet additional next day delivery requests.

The drivers are looking forward to getting behind the wheels and out on the road.”

ENVENIO LAUNCHES BIM & CFD SURVEY Engineering software developer, Envenio, has launched an online BIM (Building Information Modeling) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Survey.

The 5-6 minute survey has been designed to collect baseline data directly from industry, and aims to find out more about BIM and the role for CFD in building design and HVAC system optimization.

“The results will enable us to better understand how BIM and CFD tools are being used, and identify new areas where they could be used” says Scott Walton, VP of Envenio.

Respondents will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win $500 worth of compute time on Envenio’s cloud hosted, on-demand CFD platform EXN/Aero.

Advances in both BIM and CFD technology have enabled complicated building models

to be digitally constructed with precise geometry and accurate information to support the project construction, fabrication, analysis and procurement activities. Mapping 3D flow patterns, evaluating occupant thermal comfort, and predicting contaminant dispersion are just some of the reasons more and more in the built environment have been turning to CFD as a general purpose flow simulator, and

engineers are using CFD to trial new design ideas at low cost or to identify problems with existing systems during retrofits. The survey will ask questions about existing BIM and CFD use, identifying current attitudes and perceptions, training and usability issues, and costs.

Results from the survey will be shared in September.

RGB’s penalty shoot-out raises over £389 for children’s hospice With football fever having gripped the country over the past month, RGB Building Supplies recently gave customers and staff the chance to score a penalty against the company’s mascot Archie Bee, helping to raise £389.73 for Children’s Hospice South West.

Penalty takers made a £1 donation to take their shot and all those that beat Archie Bee were entered into a prize draw to win a Sharp 49” LED TV. Kevin Fenlon, CEO at RGB, commented:
