Bespoke Wine Storage Project Our client approached us in the summer of 2017 with some bespoke furniture requirements for her large residence in Bath.

The initial brief was for a utility room, a library and bespoke wine storage, but the project developed with an additional walk in dressing room and wardrobes for her children’s rooms. Our client had a very keen interest in interiors, particularly hotel interiors, and we worked closely with her on the designs—shaping them into beautiful yet functional domestic designs.We kept to fairly classic shapes and proportions in order to complement the period architecture of her home, but introduced lots of interesting materials and textures. These included unpolished solid brass, Elitis wallpapers, antique mirror glass, several different marbles, walnut, oak, Turnstyle and Armac Martin ironmongery.

The project took several months of design, manufacture and installation and we took great pleasure in building beautiful furniture designed to do justice to the wonderful property. It was a really exciting collaboration and we enjoyed working closely with the client. The results were impressive and involved a huge team effort—from Alex in the design department, Natalie in operations, Tom S, Ben, Neil, Andy, Richie and Will the cabinetmakers, Brett and his painting team and all of the site team.

BESPOKE WINE WALL The wine wall was designed in collaboration with Mia Marquez and crafted for the far wall in the open plan kitchen. It created a beautiful yet functional feature wall, which complimented the rest of the space. Every inch of this design was well thought out in principle and practice, and was designed to hold and display 128 bottles of wine! The glazed doors on either side of the wine wall were crafted from Accoya wood and finished in house with Farrow & Ball Railings, while the cabinets were made from walnut. Once crafted, the central carcasses were fitted with a series of solid brass bars—slotted in by hand. This complemented the brass inlay which was inserted throughout the panels.

To finish off this centrepiece, an antique mirror effect wallpaper was fitted on the back wall to create a sense of opulence and to reflect light around the room. This beautifully complimented the stunning Nero Marquina stone worktop and the Armac Martin solid brass handles on the doors. Find out more about how the wine wall was made here.

UTILITY AND BOOT ROOM The utility room was designed to work as a laundry area and boot room. We crafted custom made cupboards and cabinets from oak with several unique storage solutions within. The solid oak curved seating area was designed with space for shoes underneath and a designated umbrella stand, while the large cabinet featured eight solid oak pull out drawers with brass cup handles and glazed display cabinets. We finished the cabinets with Armac Martin handles. The top of the cabinets featured bespoke mouldings to match the period characteristics of the house, and were finished and painted in house in F&B Lichen. We also handcrafted vertical panelling to add a little detail into the room and finished the counter top with a polished Carrara stone.

LIBRARY AND TV ROOM The library featured a beautiful study desk, bookshelf and oak work desk. Crafted from oak and finished in a rich Stiffkey Blue, the study desk featured solid oak drawers and work top and also custom designed tier shelving. Alongside this, we also designed and crafted a beautiful drinks cabinet with an antique mirror back and a polished Carrara stone top. The lower cabinets were covered with a leather like material, which beautifully complemented the rest of the design and added extra depth and texture. We finished the cabinets with round brass handles from Armac Martin and also inserted brass inlay into the cabinetry, which continued the theme from the wine wall in the kitchen.

We also added custom mouldings on top of the cabinets to match the heritage characteristics of the home, as well as the wall panelling with integrated socket holes.

The stairs led down to an enclosed TV area where we crafted a custom TV unit and slated dividing screen using walnut. The unit featured a modern, sleek design with painted drawers and a flap down door complete with inlay speaker fabric. This allowed the TV remote to be used without having to disrupt the door.

WALK-IN DRESSING ROOM We worked closely with designer Mia Marquez and our client on the creation of this walk-in dressing room. Each wardrobe featured bespoke storage solutions to suit her exact needs, which included pull out shoe racks, a slated shoe cabinet, internal deep drawers and hanging solutions for different garments. We crafted the cabinet interiors from walnut and contrasting this with Accoya doors, with a walnut trim, which we paint in a classic London Stone. We handmade the solid brass handles for the doors and drawers and also included an elegant enclosed dressing table with surround mirror panels.

BEDROOM ALCOVE CABINETS We crafted these symmetrical alcove cabinets for the master bedroom which led on to the walk in dressing room. Made from walnut, the cabinets featured mirror backs with vintage leather vinyl on the fronts of the lower door cabinets. We inserted a glass shelf below the walnut shelving, which featured underneath spotlights, to compliment the mirror backing and also added a luxurious marble stone top. Armac Martin brass round handles were added to the doors to compliment the rich tones of the wood.

This wardrobe was designed by our team and the client for her boy’s room. The design was beautifully minimalist but effective and featured large painted slab doors finished in Stiffkey Blue. We crafted the cabinets to fit the space perfectly, including around the existing light fittings. When you open the doors you’re in for a surprise, as the internal deep touch-to-open drawers were painted in a bright orange—enough to brighten up anyone’s day. Alongside large fitted mirrors in

the internal doors, the client also added small leather handles which added character to the simplistic design.

GIRL’S BEDROOM WARDROBE Likewise, we also worked closely with our client to design the perfect storage solution for her little girl’s room. We crafted and fitted a series of cabinets, painted in a strong white tone, with glazed doors, a shelving

unit with space for pull out boxes and also a dressing table space with solid ash worktop and Worsted painted drawers. Again we used round Armac Martin handles to complete the elegant design.

Our client was really happy with the results and it was a fantastic project to be involved in.

TANG INTERIORS APPOINTED TO DELIVER NEW OFFICES FOR HIVE360

A growing employment support company in Birmingham has moved into its impressive new offices on Hagley Road, after Tang Interiors delivered a lavish refurbishment in the space.

Hive360, which provides specialist HR, administrative and legislative support to business, has moved from Pinnacle House, Hagley Road, to a 1,500 sq ft office suite on the eighth floor of 54 Hagley Road.

Tang Interiors, responsible for project managing the refurbishment, undertook a Cat B strip out and fit out, comprising new partition walls, ceilings, lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), flooring and kitchens.

Hive360 also specified bespoke joinery, including feature walls and freestanding partitions, as part of the programme of works, which took six weeks to complete.

‘Behind Closed Doors’ with Grid Wardrobes by William Garvey Furniture Makers Are you a slave to your home storage, unable to find that perfect outfit or favourite pair of shoes? We speak with leading British furniture designer and maker, Bill Garvey, Managing Director of William Garvey, and find out how a walk-in dressing room could be your answer for a fuss-free, organised bedroom with tailor-made storage and design features.

Step 1. Identify the space & your personal interior design style First and foremost, how do you want your dressing room to look and feel? If you’re lacking in inspiration then create a mood board as this will allow you to easily envisage how your ‘styling’ and design elements will all come together in one scheme. For instance, the bathroom has cleverly taken a ‘his and her’ approach to interior design with dual solutions like a twin set of basins or double ended bath to make room for two! Use this principle in your dressing room and choose personalised wardrobe space that is tailored to the individual. For him, think about interior solutions which are designed to organise belts, ties and cufflinks as this will minimise clutter, as well as a half-height clothes rail at the top and midway for shirts, jackets and trousers. For her, you can opt for a full height

clothes rails to look after those long dresses, along with display shoe storage or an integral vanity unit with strategically placed lighting for optimum illumination.

Step 3. Concept design stage & Install This is your opportunity to maximise the space available, so make sure you consider full-height furniture solutions that are designed to fit the room from floor to ceiling, and spans the length and breadth of the room. By doing so, you will capitalise on all available storage: display and concealed.

At this stage, I recommend enlisting a professional and opt for a well-established brand that is able to listen to your needs and expertly design a fitted furniture solution that achieves the best results for you, your home and lifestyle.

People on the move NEW HR MANAGER FOR KITCHENS INTERNATIONAL Karen Miller has been appointed as HR Manager for award-winning kitchen designer and retailer Kitchens International.

With over 20 years experience in HR Karen joins the prestigious Scottish kitchen company from Johnson & Johnson Medical Ltd. With a degree in Human Resources and an MBA, Karen is also an Accredited Coach, as well as Chartered Membership of CIPD, so brings to this position a wealth of experience and knowledge.

In the contracts division Ailsa Howorth has just been promoted to another newly created position as Contracts Design Manager,

heading up a team of four designers for the expanding contracts division. With some great new contract developments underway and in the pipeline, Ailsa brings to this role a great depth of knowledge, organisational ability and creative skill.

CONCORD REINVIGORATES LONDON OFFICE Concord Lighting has created a bright and welcoming environment at a recently refurbished office block on Jermyn Street in central London. With its prime location, the building offers 38,000 sq ft of Category A office space over six impressive floors. Its modern feel is accentuated by a variety of lighting solutions from leading architectural lighting brand, Concord by Sylvania.

D.W. Electrical Ltd (www.dwgroupuk.com) was the electrical contractor on the project and worked with Concord to specify the new lighting scheme.

“The office block has been refurbished from top to bottom to reinvigorate the space and give it a fresh décor,” comments Justin Goodwin, Contract Manager at D.W.

Wood Although a classic choice, wood furniture, flooring and fittings has seen a remarkable revival this year. With doors having been painted white or shades of neutral, people are going back to the bare wood look of a couple of decades ago. Those who really want to hark back to nature, are opting for more natural options for flooring such as oak parquet or wide planks.

Sustainability Part of the reason why wood is so popular is due to its sustainable attributes, something which has become more and more of a buzzword across all industries. Sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds – including at design events such as 100% Design which also flagged sustainability as one of the key themes. Not just a trend, but a mega-trend – one that affects the business world for a decade or more. Sustainability helps to protect the environment for future generations and any company with goods that are sustainable will have fans who are dedicated to finding that sustainable option.

Shades of Grey Grey is perennially popular not just as a flooring choice (think engineered wood or large format tiles) but also in paint colours. We know that this won’t die down any time soon. However, white is also gathering pace as an option for those wanting a softer look for their home for a more country feel perhaps – particularly when it comes to floors. Whilst on the other end of the spectrum, darks – chocolate and black make a statement and form the basis for a heavier style.

DESIGN GUILD MARK LAUNCHES 2019 CALL FOR ENTRIES The Design Guild Mark is now accepting applications for both the Furniture and 2D (textiles, wall coverings, surfaces, carpets and floor coverings) categories for the 2019 awards.

For over 10 years the Design Guild Mark, awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, has been distinguishing the excellent from the ordinary in the design of furnishings intended for volume production.

It is unique to other design awards as the panel of independent judges – all experts in the field of design – examine the submitted pieces and question the designer during a judging day that takes place in the fantastic surroundings of Carpenters’ Hall in the City of London.

DULUX TRADE ANNOUNCES COLOURFUTURES™ 2019 Dulux Trade, the UK’s leading paint brand, has revealed its coveted ColourFutures™ colour palettes for 2019.

Now in its 16th year, the Dulux Trade ColourFutures™ 2019 palette is selected to help professionals make colour and design choices for a wide variety of buildings, from commercial to healthcare and education to residential.

“We pressed pause and took time to regroup. As we move forward into 2019, we find this pause has given people time to re-energise and deal with the sense of unpredictability with positive action, optimism and purpose. If the unpredictability of last year forced people to retreat and regroup, 2019 is the time for their awakening. We are ready to ‘Let in the Light’.”

Even with a range of unique perspectives from around the globe, the panel recognised the valuable role that designers play, and are increasingly playing, in bringing about positive change and that ColourFutures™ 2019 should be a valuable

For example, in 2017, when our consumers felt a need for balance and calm, the palette was dominated by cooler shades of blue and grey. The next big trend: Bringing nature into interior design Due to the increase of built up urban areas, we are becoming more and more disconnected with nature. With commercial environments being dominated by harsh interior designs and limited natural materials, the homely comfortable feel is getting lost within day-to-day life.

So, how can Biophilic design benefit an environment?

By 2020, The World Health Organisation expects mental health related illness and cardiovascular disease to be the two largest contributors of disease.

Incorporating direct or indirect aspects of nature within a working and commercial environments has been demonstrated through research to reduce stress, blood pressure levels and heart rates whilst also increasing creativity, work ethic and well-being.

Over 35 years, there has been on-going research to see how Biophilic design has benefitted various environments. It has been proven that guests are willing to pay 23% more for rooms with Biophilic elements when it comes to hospitality design. In addition to this, educational spaces have also seen a positive impact as it has shown increased rates of learning, improved test results and reduced impacts of ADHD. In Health care spaces, post-op recovery times have decreased by 8.5% and reduced pain medication by 22%. Retail, office and home environments have all seen improvements when there have been elements of nature incorporated, demonstrating the positive impact of biophilic interiors.

How to create a great natural space: When aiming to create an environment that has natural elements involved, there are a few things to consider; including the colour palette and the types of materials used to create the look.

The colour palette will depend on your personal aesthetic, but make sure to try and avoid anything that resembles man made items. Earthy, jungle tones such as pale greens and blues are particularly effective

or if the warmer tones such as dusky oranges and reds are more suited, then they can mimic dessert colours. Softer tones of the chosen colours tend to encourage a more relaxed setting.

With the ever-growing use of sustainable materials, natural furnishings are becoming more popular throughout interior design. This is not only great for the future but also helps with bringing the natural feel into a space. Exposed wood, brick and concrete are great ways to integrate nature with urban. Plant and flower walls are another fantastic idea for mixing nature and interior design and will be sure to create an instagrammable space. Plant and flower walls are visually pleasing which is great for customers as it encourages them to feel more connected with nature in the fastpaced 21st century lifestyle. It also brings an artsy edge into interiors as well as increasing oxygen flow, energy levels and naturally filtering the air.

Overall, including natural materials and greenery within interior design has had fantastic benefits for people using the space. Customers are willing to pay more to feel closer to natural aesthetics, demonstrating the commercial benefits of biophilic elements. In Addition, those who enter an office space which has aspects of nature are more likely to feel happy and motivated for the day ahead which leads to higher rates in productivity, creativity and well-being. The distinctive blue finish is achieved using indigo, a natural dye extracted from plant leaves that has been used for thousands of years. The complex dyeing process takes a staggering 30 days to complete; the hide is first tanned with bark and nut shells, with natural oils and waxes applied for a slightly aged look, and the indigo is then applied.

Once the leather has been upholstered onto the finished piece, it is hand- finished for a second time using wet sandpaper to achieve a stonewashed look, and finally polished with lamb’s wool.

PLASTIC-FREE PACKAGING FROM FENWICK & TILBROOK PAINT Paint manufacturer Fenwick & Tilbrook has gone plastic-free by removing all plastic from its packaging and packing materials.

With immediate effect, Fenwick & Tilbrook paint will be sent out in its standard boxes, which are already made from recycled board, but they will be packed using only paper bubble wrap and sealed with kraft paper tape.

Brown kraft paper will be used to wrap smaller parcels together.

The paint tins themselves are made entirely from metal (including the handle) with a paper label on the front, making them already fully recyclable.

THE RESURGENCE OF MURAL ART Modern day interior decoration is in my opinion the most sombre that it has been in years. Where the sixties and seventies were defined by their bold prints and patterns, both on carpets and wallpapers, we have reached a time of ultra-modernism where now a block colour painted wall is the standard spec for indoor spaces, and even a papered feature wall is considered unusual or ‘quirky’. In many spaces walls now do little more than give a coloured backdrop to an inside space, rather than working as an integral part of the character of a room or building. Modern interior trends favour putting the attention to detail in the way a room is furnished, with dark wood, metallics and botanical prints currently in favour. I think that the potential of walls to carry their own in terms of style, design and colour has been greatly underutilised in recent years and we need to inject some magic back into them, using mural art.

Mural art these days is often associated with graffiti-style street art made popular by artists such as Banksy and tends to be left on outdoor spaces to convey some sort of theme,

message or idea. However, the possibilities of the mural reached in the artistic movements of the past have not seen the rediscovery that they deserve. From the street-inspired popart of Keith Haring to the darkly fantastical regionalism of Thomas Hart Benton, the means of expression that mural art is capable of are no longer being reached in indoor spaces.

The use of mural art spans the globe and hundreds of years and throughout history it has garnered a reputation of being the exclusive turf of the rich and famous, only found in palaces, cathedrals and stately homes. It is not typically looked at as an option for the everyday decoration of interior spaces. However, when held up against the vinyl wall art that is mass produced, the possibilities of painted mural art become apparent. The vinyl decals that populate online stores are often of poor picture quality, irreparable, low durability and, of course, absolutely lack any sort of uniqueness.

Between these various drawbacks of supposedly more-affordable substitutes and the scope of a live artist’s work real murals begin to look like an option worth considering.

Many assume that one of the reasons for the exclusivity of the mural is that the time and

skills of a professional artist are too expensive to consider for everyday settings. But in order for the mural to make the comeback it deserves this misconception needs to be quashed. Being designed and created from scratch to unique personal criteria gives a mural artist endless scope to tailor their approach. If supplied with a budget, the artist has the skills and creative eye at their disposal to deliver work that meets both the artistic and financial specifications of the client. The single expense of hiring an artist - and all the expertise and customised work that comes along with it - when held in contrast to the lack of quality, durability and uniqueness offered by vinyl wall art substitutes, emerges as an interior design solution that isn’t as unaffordable as initially assumed.

The time has come for mural art to enjoy a resurgence and, by doing so, break away from the dated misconceptions that have held it back for so many years. It is no longer only for church ceilings or villa walls or for illustrating age-old tales and fables. Moreover, it is a modern, flexible and completely unique way to express the individual character of an indoor space and its occupants, and is totally free of restrictions. It really is a blank canvas and, in modern design projects, the possibilities are endless.
