What are 3D visuals? 3D visuals are essentially images generated digitally. We create a scene on the computer using advanced software that allows us to build in a three-dimensional world. Once the scene has been constructed, materials and textures are added. We then render it, which converts the 3D space into a ‘photograph’ image. What are 3D visuals used for? 3D visuals are used to communicate your vision, your idea, before it takes place in the physical world. Architects, property developers, interior designers and other professionals really benefit from the use of 3D visuals. How does Mighty Visage Work? Our main purpose at Mighty Visage is to understand and duplicate our clients’ vision. During the process of creating your 3D visual, we will show you the development at each project stage, giving you the opportunity to make changes and rectify anything you need before the next stage. This process ensures your complete satisfaction without any hidden fees. How much does it cost? 3D visuals can reduce project costs as making changes digitally is cheaper than physically at the end of the project. We understand that every customer, and every project is very unique. We consider the whole project and price it individually. Depending on intricacy of design, and amount of work involved. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information. newprojects@mightyvisage.co.uk 020 3150 1755

Arper furnishes a new library in the heart of Helsinki Arper collections furnish Oodi, a new library recently inaugurated in the heart of Helsinki and designed by the Finnish firm ALA Architects. The building, located in central Töölö, unfolds on three levels designed to interact with one another. The first two floors feature multipurpose spaces, a cinema and workshop areas, while on the third floor you can find the library: a quiet area seemingly fluctuating over the lively city, just the perfect place to relax and have a break. Among the bookshelves, the trees and the break rooms, Arper collections interact with the surrounding architecture and blend in seamlessly with the different areas. This ever-changing space develops underneath the undulated ceiling on an equally irregular wooden surface, lit by skylights and the surrounding glass walls. Positioned along the whole library area, the Saari and Catifa 80 sofa and armchair collections create cosy urban living rooms where people can sit down and read. The Catifa Sensit seats, arranged alongside the glass walls, invite people to unwind and enjoy the views, while young readers can take a seat on the colorful Pix ottomans in the children’s area. Heikki Ruoho, Designer at ALA Architects, describes the project concept and the choice of the Arper collections as follows: “The building features elegant and supple lines. Its profile makes us think of long waves outlined on the horizon, a harmonious 06 Luxury Interiors Magazine February 2019

Project News blend with nature. At once, it also conveys a strong architectural message embodied by the geometric shape of a rectangle stretching out, just as the arch of an arrow. We wanted the furniture to be in line with this language. Elegant and minimal shapes, precisely as the ones Arper collections express that integrate with the space and intensify their elements of style. These functional products can bear the intense use they are meant for; they are extremely versatile for the comfort of guests of all ages with varied needs. Flexible products that cater to the wishes that rapidly change over the day and depending on the areas; they are light and jolly to express the playful side of this project, whilst preserving its cultural value. Colors play an essential role as well. On the ground floor, black prevails, combined to natural colors and wood, thus strengthening the essential lines of the space concept, while the colors chosen for the library express a natural and harmonious feeling in a space where the boundary between inside and outside disappears.” The library intends to be a gathering place for the residents, and once again Arper products contribute to define the different areas within the building through a strong identity and innovative drive, allowing to personalize the individual experience of the spaces. Arper’s know-how is once again employed by international A&D professionals, effectively contributing to the realization of such a cutting-edge project.

SD Sealants’ tiling division awarded prestigious £250k contract SD Sealants’ tiling department has won a highly sought-after contract worth a quarter of a million pounds in Gloucestershire. The 59 Lansdown project, which is being built by CALA Homes, is a brand-new residential development in Cheltenham Spa, Gloucestershire. SD Sealants will be carrying out extensive tiling work across Lansdown’s 42 one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as 25 three and five-bedroom villas which are expected to cost around £1million. Andre Hunt, Tiling Division Manager at SD Sealants, said: “We are delighted that Cala Homes has awarded the SD tiling division this prestigious project. The development is set to be an incredibly unique and impressive collection of million-pound homes and we’re looking forward to working on them and seeing them take shape over the coming months.” The design of the home and the development aims to bridge the residential aesthetics between Cheltenham’s growing urban environment and its traditional spa-town origins, and as such the design brief for each property combines modern and classic tiling features.

Managing Director at SD Sealants, Nick Jones, added: “SD launched its tiling service in early 2017 and it’s amazing to see what the team has achieved in less than two years. This new contract is the culmination of a lot of hard work and meticulous on-site skills from the tiling team, and we are over the moon that Cala Homes have recognised this and trusted SD Sealants with such a big project. I very much look forward to seeing more exciting developments for our tiling division this year.” Launched in 1973, SD Sealants originated as a family run business in Somerset that specialised in the supply and application of sealant. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the UK’s largest tiling, repairs and sealant companies, with nine offices across England, Scotland and Wales. ARRCC Interior Design Presents City Heights On Cape Town’s mountainside stands a striking angular building by renowned local architecture firm SAOTA. Complementing this terraced home, the interiors, by interior-design leader ARRCC, are a treasure trove of gem-like materials and custom furniture which pull together the client’s brief for ultimate comfort within high- functioning entertainment zones. A profusion of metallic surfaces is juxtaposed with warm wood and splashes of bright colour, invoking a sense of dynamic living. Says ARRCC Designer Nina Sierra Rubia of the entrance hall: ‘The walnut paneling is a reflecting of the warmth in the rest of the home, while the metal fleck ceramic by Chantal Woodman for OKHA, standing on a suspended black swing server, tells you that there’s fun to be had inside,’ The patterns in the marble-like flooring and custom designed geometric grey woolen rug are complemented by ceramic installation art by Hennie Meyer, each piece inviting closer inspection in its uniqueness. SAOTA developed the house with all guest bedrooms on the bottom storey to elevate the main living area and master bedroom to a penthouse. Dividing the bedroom and bathroom is a slatted, faceted walnut screen. ‘It creates yet another beautiful point of interest, while defining the two spaces and adding privacy,’ Mark explains. The bathroom walls continue the language of the marble-like floors, presenting the notion of five-star indulgence. Director Mark Rielly. Reached via a doublevolume-glass stairwell that introduces mountainscape views, the living area is a riot of calculated contrast, where light-reflective metallics – polished, tarnished or patinated – hover above and surround precious marble and wooden surfaces. February 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 09

Project This is evident in the pared-back kitchen, where a dark marble is inserted into a patinated brass countertop with granite work surface. Brightened up with an optically abstract painting by Andrzej Urbanski from Everard Read, this area also encompasses the dining suite. The walnut dining table was custom-made with a marble lazy Susan and is surrounded by Arti-forte chairs from Limeline that complement the table’s rounded form. Such circular shapes come to play in the sculptural light, too. Brass rings cast a halo over the table, an atmosphere that is mimicked in the lounge with its polygon-shaped light. Separated from the dining area by architecturally slatted walnut screens, the lounge continues the dialogue of fascinating form. Its custom sofa, with angled bend, allows for complete immersion, offering views of the ocean, courtyard and television, which also acts as a mirror, further enhancing the sense of space. On either side of this mirror is a decorative acoustic fabric with brass detailing, cleverly concealing the speakers, while below the mirror stands a biofuel fireplace surrounded by Emperador marble. Such cosiness is best enjoyed while lazing on the reclining chair up holstered in a mustard felt by COR. Two purple OKHA Gloob chairs, on either side of a Minotti side table, introduce colour to this otherwise muted area. The custom-made server and coffee table cluster create interest in their unusual design, with the Tom Dixon Melt lamp acting as sideboard sculpture, maintaining the metallic pops of attraction around the home.

On the opposite end of this floor is the bar, a stylish nook for mixing drinks under Lee Broom hanging lights from Crema. It’s here that the combination of material and form is at its most condensed, with the slatted ceiling wrapping itself over the back wall, blurring into the wooden splashback that doubles up as illuminated shelving. The bar itself is a custom structure, fronted by Pietra Paesina Laminam slabs. Tom Dixon bar stools and Classicon side tables from Limeline add vibrant colour and light reflection to this intimate hangout. ‘This entire living-area floor opens up to an enclosed terrace,’ Mark explains, ‘which can be closed completely for weather protection.’ Here, Nina and the ARRCC team created two outdoor entertainment areas – one encompassing another lounge with custom furniture in neutral tones, reflecting Cape Town’s beach lifestyle, and the other sporting a cantilevered bio-fuel fireplace for dry ing off after a swim in the infinity pool. Entrance at the back of the building is deliberately understated; a modest canopy shelters the front door opening onto a landing from which a broad spine gently traces down the natural gradient alongside a generous garden courtyard. The corridor ends at the kitchen, whose island – a solid block of granite – forms a fulcrum with the principle living areas placed at right angles, parallel with the lagoon. The kitchen looks out over open-plan dining and lounge areas towards a fireplace and picture window framed in a massive concrete hearth wall. The top-storey master suite continues the home’s affinity for walnut, grey, mustard, and curvaceous forms, bringing these to play in a more masculine way, and then softening the aesthetic with linen effect curtains. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson honored with 2019 AIA Interior Architecture award for Apple Store, Upper East Side The American Institute of Architects have selected the Bohlin Cywinski Jackson-designed Apple Store, Upper East Side as one of nine projects to receive its prestigious award. The awards program honors notable achievements in architecturally spectacular interior spaces. Located at Madison Avenue and 74th Street, the project is an adaptive reuse of the 1922 U.S. Mortgage & Trust building designed by Henry Otis Chapman, and is now home to one of Apple’s Manhattan retail stores. The neighborhood is characterized by a mixture of luxury-brand retail shops and several notable landmarks, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum designed by Marcel Breuer. Apple collaborated with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and its consultant team to restore the building’s general ambiance and grandeur. The project included exterior restoration that required significant repair to many of the original windows; exterior paint, stone, and grout were also reconditioned. The interior finishes, such as the marble entry, plaster coffered ceilings, and chandeliers, were reconstructed 14 Luxury Interiors Magazine February 2019

with the help of historic photographs and blueprints. Sensitive alterations were made to the original banking hall, which now serves as the store’s main sales floor. To recover the light and airy qualities of the space, partitions and mezzanines were recreated, and columns and thick bearing walls were removed. The original vault room, repurposed as a private sales space, allows for a more personal customer experience. In addition to careful restorations and modifications, many upgrades to building services were made during the renovation. “To become a recognizable and active Apple retail environment, while respecting the original design, this project required dedicated focus to reinterpret and recreate the spatial qualities and the unique architectural detailing of the interior,” said Karl Backus, design principal from Bohlin Cywinski Jackson’s San Francisco office. “We’re thrilled with the outcome and proud of the team’s work in restoring the grandeur of the space. We are honored to receive this recognition.” This is Apple’s seventh New York retail store to be designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. 2019 Trends

Interior Trends and Tiles for 2019 Original Style has teamed up with award-winning interior blogger, Stacey Sheppard, author of The Design Sheppard, to present top interior trends for 2019. From ‘Rough Luxe’ to ‘70s Revival’, 2019 is set to be a year full of colour and textures and Original Style has a tile to complement each of the following on-trend looks! 1. Rough Luxe Industrial décor continues to be popular amongst interior enthusiasts, but it can be difficult to integrate this style into domestic settings. Through the incorporation of luxurious finishes and accessories, warmth and elegance can be brought into an industrial-inspired space. “Rough Luxe is where refined luxury meets rough industrial finishes” comments Stacey. “Expect to see warm metallics like brass and gold, paired with exposed brick and concrete”. Original Style’s Midnight Blue, a metal-effect tile, is perfect for creating an industrial look whilst retaining luxury and tranquillity. Pair Midnight Blue with gold accents, warm tones of grey and earthy textures, such as the concrete-effect tile ‘Shadow Smoke’, for a space that exudes style. 2. Colourful Kitchens The use of bold colours in kitchen settings is set to soar in 2019. “With kitchens in deep navy blues accompanied by statement metallic splash backs, we are done playing it safe in the kitchen and we are seeing some really bold statement colours coming through” comments Stacey. To achieve this look; team Original Style’s Copper Leaf glass tile with dark hues, greys and wood-effect floor tiles, such as Lignum Taupe, for a statement kitchen that leaves a lasting impression. 16 Luxury Interiors Magazine February 2019

3. 70s Revival With the arrival of fringing on home accessories, bold colours and patterns; it’s time to welcome the return of the experimental glamour of the 1970s! “Colour wise we will see a strong focus on rich, earthy tones like mustard yellow, ochre, olive green, chocolate and camels such as Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2019; Spiced Honey” says Stacey. The Winchester Tile Company’s Olive Green, Honey and Amber field tiles are ideal accompaniments to this revival. Pair with retro-patterned wallpaper and fabrics with bold motifs for a real throwback! 4. The New Neutrals When it comes to neutral colours in interior settings, a variety of palettes have come and gone over the years, from the very dated Magnolia to the more recently beloved Grey. However, it’s now the turn of the New Neutrals. “Think tea rose, lavender, mint, lilac and pale peach shades” says Stacey. “Pastel colours in a more muted shade are ‘in’ in a big way and are perfect for those who are looking to create bright, open spaces”. To embrace a pastel colour palette, team Original Style’s Maison Blanc, a pale blue tile with a woven fabric effect, with ‘Mint’ or ‘Cloud Smooth’ from The Winchester Tile Company. 5. Natural Selection Materials such as wood, rattan, seagrass, wicker, cork and bamboo naturally provide warmth and texture to spaces. When paired with Original Style’s palm print tile, ‘Hot House’, and ‘Cream Natural’ wood-effect tiles; expect to be immersed in a tropical paradise. “Focus on imperfect finishes, artisan, tactile accessories” suggests Stacey. “Hot House from Original Style perfectly encapsulates nature at its best and is a great tile for embracing this trend!”

2019 Trends

The 2019 tile trends to look out for When it comes to new floor and wall tile trends, 2019 is set to be an exciting year. Here, Stephen Baker, Commercial Director at Solus Ceramics, discusses the emerging tile trends that are set to develop in 2019. Marble is a popular and timeless interior design trend, which is set to continue into 2019. The natural, neutral hues of calacatta marble are subtle and understated, meaning not only can it be paired with almost any colour, but it can also be used in a variety of different locations to provide a luxurious and capturing interior design. The use of patterned tiles is another trend that is set to develop into 2019. From subtle patterns to bold contrasting colours, patterned tiles can create a capturing aesthetic to transform any interior space. Unique patterns can create striking statements when used on a large surface area, as well as creating a subtle vibrancy when incorporated on a smaller scale, making patterned tiles the perfect addition to any interior. Another trend set to take 2019 by storm will be coloured tiles. From a blast of bright colour to soft and subtle detail, designers are now choosing coloured tiles to create a vibrant and capturing design. The use of coloured tiles within kitchen areas is set to be particularly popular for 2019, creating a standout feature. Finally, the use of wood effect tiles will also be an emerging trend in 2019, adding charm and character

to any space. Practical and high quality, these tiles are a popular choice for designers, with a variety of colours and textures available, allowing both classic and contemporary looks to be created. February 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 17

Rug or Mat on Smooth Flooring • Place the grey side facing downwards on the smooth floor. • Place the rug or mat on the black side.

MHK UK’s first appearance at imm cologne/LivingKitchen is a great success The imm cologne/LivingKitchen event is one of the leading international trade fairs. It is also an important trend and mood barometer at the start of the new financial year. From 14 to 20 January 2019, 217 exhibitors from 28 countries demonstrated their innovative strength, their design requirements and the quality of the industry sector in Cologne. For the very first time, MHK UK was among the exhibitors. At the 432sqm stand of MHK UK’s parent company, the MHK Group, Marcel Crezee, expansion managing director of the MHK Group, presented the range of services offered by the association to the international trade audience. “We are very satisfied with results of our trade fair appearance,” summed up Marcel Crezee. “This year was particularly global, with 52 percent of attendees being foreign trade visitors from 145 countries. There were also many UK kitchen retailers who attended the fair and visited MHK’s stand to learn more about the new UK buying association.” “Interest in our comprehensive offering is high,” says Crezee. “During the numerous discussions it became clear that the dealers value, above all, the direct purchasing advantage and the other advantages offered through our supporting services. But for many, central regulation with the unrestricted ‘delcredere’ is important,” explains

Marcel Crezee. “We are the only buying association in UK to assume the liabilities of our contractors – and we do so without a limit.” Thanks to this MHK partners always enjoy a 1A credit rating at suppliers and banks. “Our partners do not have to pay for their orders in advance with their suppliers in the event of a no-deal Brexit.” All these strong combinations convinced and helped MHK UK to sign several new membership contracts in Cologne. 35 years ago, the MHK Group, Europe’s leading association for medium-sized kitchen and furniture retailers as well as the sanitary trade, presented itself for the first time at imm cologne. Since then, Hans Strothoff, founder and CEO of the MHK Group, has been actively campaigning for the development of the trade fair into a leading international trade fair, a trade fair that reflects the innovative strength and performance of the kitchen industry.

Nulty designs lighting for Newnham College Nulty is pleased to have designed the lighting for Newnham College’s newly opened modern extension, incorporating a light-filled homage to some of its most notable former students and research fellows. Working in close collaboration with Walters & Cohen Architects and Ab Rogers Design, Nulty was tasked to create an inviting warmth in the new wing of the Cambridge women’s college, as well address the practical needs of the students and faculty. In the café and social space, Nulty commissioned Haberdashery design studio to develop a lighting sculpture inspired by the fascinating written and photographic history of Newnham College and the prints of Japanese artist Hokusai. Designed to represent 270 pages of paper flying through the air, the ‘pages’ made of brass or powdercoated steel are etched with historical college documents and letters written by women associated with the college. Small LED lights are positioned on some of the ‘pages’ and carefully targeted spotlights positioned on nearby walls allow light to be reflected from the piece. The documents etched onto ‘pages’ of the lighting sculpture are: - A letter by archaeologist Prof Dorothy Garrod, first female Professor at Cambridge - A letter from Anne Jemima Clough, the College’s first Principal, to Horace Darwin - A letter home by Mary Hutton, one of the College’s first students - The estimate for repairs to the Clough Gates, after male undergraduates attacked the college in 1921, in riots protesting degrees for women. - A photograph of Anne Jemima Clough and the first five Newnham students of 1871 24 Luxury Interiors Magazine February 2019

- A letter home from Newnham student Rosalind Franklin, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA - Second Principal Eleanor Sidgwick’s 1890 publication of Health Statistics, demonstrating education did not damage women’s health - A travel journal by Philippa Fawcett, who received the top mark in the mathematics Tripos exams at a time when women could not receive degrees - A letter from Newnham’s architect, Basil Champneys, to campaigner for women’s rights Professor Henry Sidgwick - A 19th century student’s satirical sketch of Henry Sidgwick giving ‘Lectures for Ladies’ - A 19th century student’s cartoons of Tripos exams - A comic play by Newnham students from 1906, poking fun at University traditions Associate Lighting Designer at Nulty, Anna Sandgren comments, “we were determined to reflect the history of the college in the main lighting installation and tell the inspiring stories of these pioneering women. And due to the double-height configuration of the space, it is possible to be close enough to read many of the pages when looking from a first-floor opening”. Externally, the texture of the brickwork of the entrance area/ Porter’s Lodge is highlighted by a series of low intervention uplights to warmly ‘lift’ the façade. A highlight of the exterior is a two-storey tall artwork by former Turner Prize nominee Cathy de Monchaux, inspired by a lecture Virginia Woolf gave at the college, the basis for A Room of One’s Own. Cast in bronze and standing in relief from the brick wall the sculpture needed carefully considered lighting. The Nulty team visited de Monchaux at her studio prior to the installation of the artwork to February 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 25

determine the appropriate colour temperature and type of lighting required. A narrow, very powerful uplight reveals the tall piece’s highly textured surface, preventing any light from flooding elsewhere. Inside the entrance, Nulty Bespoke produced 36 beautiful surface-mounted ceiling pendants, with the capability of producing two layers of light. Each pendant consists of two circular plates with a gap in between. The lower plate holds a series of small LED lights which project light onto the larger brass disk close to the ceiling, producing a soft ambient glow of reflected light, highlight the sensual texture of the ceilings timber coffers. Nulty Bespoke cleverly utilises some of these pendants further by incorporating a pop out, adjustable spotlight within the lower disk. When popped out and angled, these allow highly targeted beams of light to illuminate art on the walls, when required. Alternatively the spotlights can stay partly hidden and create a pool of light on the floor directly below the pendant. Some of these pendants are also fitted with concealed emergency lighting features, ensuring this necessary function doesn’t impact on the aesthetics of the space. Bringing the history of the college to life further, linear LEDs are fixed to cabinets washing historic artefacts with light. Each fitting has a high light colour rendering and is dimmable to minimize the potential for light damage to any of the pieces. Each of the individual teaching rooms has a central ceiling light that emits a generous amount of light onto the space, using both direct and indirect light distribution, reducing glare. 26 Luxury Interiors Magazine February 2019

An Innovative Wallcovering With Wood SanFoot is a real wood veneer solution for multiple interior design applications applied directly to drywall as a wallcovering, complimented with fabricated architectural wood panelling and profiles. An engineered sheet material manufactured from 5 layers. This unique construction includes a pre-finished Polyurethane lacquer coating, an ultra thin slice of real wood veneer and an Aluminium foil core. There are many unique qualities to SanFoot, most importantly that the product achieves a fire rating classification of Euroclass B - s1,d0 (UK Class 0). Pre-finished as standard, there is no need for additional finishing either on or off site, as the product is ready for use right out the box. Supplied in rolled sheets SanFoot can be wrapped around both internal and external corners as tight as 90 degrees, making this the ideal wallcovering solution. When considering performance SanFoot is both impact and moisture resistant as the Aluminium foil layer acts as a zero adhesive bleed through barrier, along with providing unrivalled durability and structural integrity. A key environmental benefit of SanFoot is the 300% greater yield than conventional veneers, due to our unique veneer slicing process. As such the product is typically 0.3mm in thickness. By comparison conventional veneers are typically sold in raw plank lengths, to be stitched together to produce sheets of veneer, which then require finishing and application to a core material before they are fit for use. Each SanFoot sheet can be sequence matched and veneer sheet matching in a variety of ways to include book, slip and random plank matched, with various sheen levels also available. From an economical perspective SanFoot as a direct application wallcovering solution is typically 1/3 the cost of conventional veneer panelling on a wall lining system. Choose from over 100 natural, exotic and reconstituted species available to order as FSC. Whether you’re looking to custom stain a particular species, we have over 5,000 custom stain tones and if we don’t have the right tone then we’ll match from an approved control sample. Incorporate Branding, Wayfinding or Graphic designs as we can digitally print within the 5 layer construction or this can be done retrospectively by others. Or even consider custom inlaying various shapes with contrasting species to offer your client something completely bespoke.

SanFoot is the Clients product of choice, both the Architect and Interior Designers preference when specifying wood as the desired and value engineered wood wallcovering solution.

Gordon Young Architects designs VIVI, a new all-day dining destination rhubarb - the premium hospitality group behind Sky Garden – will launch VIVI at the iconic Centre Point, a new all-day dining destination. Designed by Gordon Young Architects Ltd, the vibrant interiors take inspiration from London’s ‘Swinging 60’s’ – the decade that embodied fun, hedonism and in which Centre Point was built. Celebrating the playfulness, music and youth culture of the time, the decor will include optical art, dog-tooth patterning, a glamourous elliptical bar as well as the original tiling down the wings of the grade II listed space. Suspended over the dining area will be a signature, central bespoke chandelier handmade by Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt mimicking the 1960s ‘playplax’. This talented female designer creates exclusive one-off lamps in plexiglass and brass, reminiscent of 1960s Italian design, French Art Nouveau and German Bauhaus modernism. This piece showcased in VIVI is Vibeke’s first public commission in London.
