MYSTERY WELCOMES TRIO OF YOUNG DESIGN TALENT Young designers, Dan Hinde, James Goldsworthy and Laura Sinclair add their considerable talent to the brand design and interiors teams. Dan Hinde, who joins the studio as Brand Designer across all clients has worked predominantly in F&B brands and the luxury lifestyle market, including undertaking design and branding work for Absolut, G.H. Mumm, Perrier-Jouët and Martell Cognac.

“My passion for design is endless”, says James, “but my other love is Art, which I feel plays the biggest part in my creativity. For me, designing an Interior is like painting a picture.” When he’s not working he’ll be in an art gallery recharging the batteries and afterwards, drinking and dining in the new eateries of London.

“I have unwavering passion for design and all things branding”, says Dan. “I love working with smaller clients from the ground up, as much as working with larger more established brands, enabling them to develop and define their place in the market.”

First Class Interior Architecture Honours graduate from Nottingham Trent University, Laura Sinclair, will work under head of interiors Sarah Mannerings as middleweight Interior Designer across all interiors and full concept clients.

Outside of work Dan loves exploring London, checking out exhibitions and finding new and exciting places to eat and drink!

Coming from an architectural background, Laura’s work stems from her appreciation for light and space and her interests follow suit: “I thoroughly enjoy a Brutalist building and know my way around the depths of the Barbican pretty damn well now. I’m known for frequent Euro-trips and hold a niche interest for perusing the metro system / train station in every place I go.”

James Goldsworthy, a graduate in Interior Design from Edinburgh College of Art adds his exceptional flair for art, illustration and design to the interiors team. Since finishing his studies, James has been on a whirlwind journey of design projects; from a Theme Park in China and the luxurious property of One Hyde Park Corner, to designing the global interiors brand guidelines for Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn.

STANTON WILLIAMS AWARDED PLANNING FOR TINTAGEL HOUSE Stirling Prize winning architects Stanton Williams have been granted planning permission for the redevelopment of Tintagel House in London. The architecture studio have been commissioned by The Office Group to transform an existing 12-storey office block into a flexible setting for a variety of work styles, creating affordable office space and ancillary supporting facilities over 10,000 sqm. The design will expand and improve the existing office accommodation within Tintagel House, which was built in 1960 and has been vacant for several years. Key to achieving the aims of The Office Group is the opening up and expansion of the ground and first floors to engage both visually and physically with the public space around the building. The proposals adopt a sustainable approach consisting of the reuse and upgrade of the existing building with the creation of generous communal spaces in the new extension at ground and first floor as well as the conversion of the panoramic top floor from plant room to office space. The site around the building is also transformed with new hard-landscaping, five new trees along Albert Embankment, and richly planted areas along the riverside path and on the upper floors terraces for enhanced biodiversity and visual amenity. The material palette of facing brick and glazed tiles of the new façade

references the original concept of the building, as well the site’s history of pottery and glazed ceramic production, most notably the presence of the Vauxhall Pottery, active in the area between the 17th and the 19th century. Tintagel House is located on the Albert Embankment, near to Vauxhall Bridge. The riverside location has panoramic views across central London, and towards the nearby Riverwalk residential scheme also designed by Stanton Williams completed in 2016. Construction work on Tintagel House is due to complete by the end of 2017.

Aztec partners with Avenue HQ to make pioneering workspace a reality A leading fit-out and construction company has successfully completed the £1million Avenue HQ workspace in Liverpool city centre. Aztec was chosen by the entrepreneurs behind Avenue HQ, Matthew Kennedy and Karl Connolly, to make their vision a reality. Avenue HQ is a unique collaborative environment comprising 16,000 sq. ft. and offering a dynamic mix of start-up and more established companies. The Mann Island campus mixes private offices, flexible workspace, co-working, meeting rooms and events. The entrepreneurs behind Avenue HQ, Matthew Kennedy and Karl Connolly, took their inspiration from cities like New York where collaborative co-working is becoming increasingly popular. Matthew, Avenue HQ’s CEO, said: “It was clear from our very first meeting that the Aztec team understood what we were trying to achieve. We are tapping into a global cultural shift in the way people want to work. A lot of the co-working spaces that have been created to date in the UK have either been focused on start-up businesses or have been sector specific. Avenue HQ differs in a number of ways, not least that we will have start-ups and freelancers working alongside more established companies. Too many businesses fail because they operate in isolation. We want to rewrite the rules by providing the support and human contact that is essential for business growth.”

Neal Maxwell, Founder and Sales Director of Aztec, said: “We agreed from the outset that we would put in the time and effort to create Matt and Karl’s vision through a collaborative partnership. We worked at risk in the early stages while they raised finance to help them take their ideas and create a scheme that was both innovative and commercially sound. Aztec has been in business for over 30 years so the Avenue HQ team were able to tap into our knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work.” Aztec was able to provide all of the fit-out and construction services required including all infrastructure and building works, mechanicals and electricals, interior design, furniture and branding. Aztec’s own joinery workshop has also handmade a number of pieces of bespoke furniture for the development. Aztec worked closely with Liverpool firm Day Architecture. Avenue HQ is supported by Barclays Eagle Labs, the bank’s 11th such facility in the UK. Matthew said: “Our partnership with Barclays will mean that we will have additional facilities such as 3D printers, laser cutters and mentoring from a range of industry specialists. All of our members will also become part of the Eagle Lab network, providing access to all Eagle Labs across the country.” In addition to the 16,000 sq. ft. of workspace, Avenue HQ also includes a coffee shop, Cuppacoffee, providing members with an additional social space. There is also a bar called The Lobby @ Avenue HQ. Avenue HQ offers a range of membership packages to suit all requirements, from people looking for a single hot desk through to those wanting private offices for up to 10 people. Event spaces, meeting rooms and presentation suites are also available for hire. Avenue HQ will be starting work on a second location in Nottingham later this year with further target cities including Leeds and Manchester. Luxury Interiors Magazine - 13

Designer Chris Birchall from the Penketh Group, which recently took Neo’s entire eighth floor from which to open its spectacular new Worklife Showroom, said: “Many of the best innovations come from interactions that can happen anywhere in the office and not just in a traditional desk-based setting. “It’s why we are increasingly seeing a demand for co-working spaces as employers look for more flexible solutions to allow their people to work in new, more creative and collaborative ways.” “Our cutting-edge furniture solutions helped to create the environment that Bruntwood was looking for and we delivered the project on budget and within a very tight eight-week timeframe.” Bruntwood’s Head of Sales Charlie Beck said: “We decided to bring something new to Manchester to encourage creatively-minded businesses of all sizes and our co-working space in Neo is the result of a lot of research.” “We wanted an attractive, innovative space with good design that would ultimately help people because wellbeing is very much at the forefront of our plans. Penketh Group have provided us with a carefully selected range of seating types and tables with integrated power. These all contribute to a collection of sophisticated, informal and flexible workspaces that give users a choice, while also

fostering a sense of community and a space for businesses to connect.” Neo, the former 12-storey Bank House building, is Bruntwood’s most evolved collaborative workspace to date. Penketh Group, established 40 years ago, works with clients across the country to create outstanding working environments that engage with and inspire the people who work in them. As well as office interior design and furniture, the company’s services include AV, Technology and Managed Print Solutions.

LAUNCESTON PLACE UNVEILS A FRESH NEW LOOK Originally opened in 1986, Launceston Place is tucked away on the pretty residential Kensington street that is its namesake. Its rejuvenated look is cheerful and modern in style, including new, blue-veined timber floors and a light, fresh colour scheme of French grey. Designed to be a blank canvas, this fresher palette provides the backdrop for the restaurant’s impressive new collection of contemporary art, curated by Islington’s Amar Gallery. Inspired by Ben’s culinary creativity and combining figurative expression with peaceful minimalism, the collection includes paintings by Korea’s minimalist artist Lee Ufan, and London-based illustrator and painter Howard Tangye.

Meanwhile, intricate and hand-painted murals planned for the staircase walls will be unveiled this summer. In a nod to spring and the rejuvenated new interior, Ben has made some tweaks to his menu, introducing seasonal dishes such as asparagus, walnut and bacon, and peach, jasmine and black pepper. These appear alongside his signature dishes, including the much-acclaimed Carrot with lovage, yoghurt and caraway. “We’re thrilled to unveil Launceston Place’s new look; a hidden gem in a beautiful location, its contemporary, fresh and light design makes it the perfect setting in which to enjoy Ben’s modern European menu,” comments D&D London’s David Loewi.

NEW DESTRATIFICATION SOLUTION LOWERS THE COST OF HIGH CEILINGS ZOO Fans, in partnership with Elta Fans, has launched a destratification solution capable of creating even temperatures from floor-to-ceiling, making it easier and more efficient to heat or cool almost any building. With destratification recommended as one of the Carbon Trust’s effective energy-saving strategies, the ZOO Fan effectively lowers the cost of buildings with high ceilings by improving air circulation and thermal comfort, while offering a typical payback period of just one to three years. Creating a gentle, concise column of air that brings warm air down to floor level, the ZOO Fan destratifies the space and reduces the temperature differential to as low as 1°C overall. In doing so, HVAC

systems can be used less often and the requirement for ducting is reduced; making a favourable impact on energy usage and the building’s carbon footprint. Easy to install around obstructions such as lights or overhead cranes, the fan’s enclosed housing will avoid creating strobe effects with lighting or interference with fire suppression equipment. In addition, the directed column of air is ideal for aisles or avoiding sensitive areas. The ZOO Fan warms-up the floor and helps keep it dry, whilst reducing condensation on equipment. By eliminating hot and cold spots, ZOO Fans noticeably improve comfort, enabling productivity to increase as a result. The ZOO Fan is available in a number of variants for open ceiling, drop ceiling and spot cooling requirements, with a range of supporting controllers capable of further enhancing performance. Richard Johnston, National Business Development Manager at Elta Group Building Services, said: “The concept behind the ZOO Fan is that it uses reduced levels of energy, resulting in a need for fewer units than comparable destratification systems; lowering installation and operating costs. By running HVAC equipment less, it lasts longer, which in turn reduces costs and lowers the environmental impact of regular fan replacement.” For more information about ZOO Fans, visit www.zoofans.com or to find out about Elta Fans and its full range of high-quality air movement solutions, visit www.eltafans.com.

Note Design Studio celebrates pastel colours in revamp of 19th century property Over a century old, the 200-square-metre property was previously the head office of a fashion brand. The clients asked local design collective Note Design Studio to transform it into a family home that maintained its “19th century splendour”. The designers’ response was to create a colour palette based on some of the tones already there. They then applied these pastel hues to walls, mouldings, and door and window frames. They call the project Hidden Tints. “We noted the colours of the three tiled ovens: green, pink and a yellowish white,” explained interior architect Sanna Wåhlin. “We added tones to the original colour scale, which worked as a bridge between the powerful original hues, finally ending up with an eight-tone palette that originated from the hidden traces of the old apartment.” >> 20 - Luxury Interiors Magazine

Some rooms are dominated by one colour, while others present an assortment of different tones. But they all build on the recent trend in Sweden for dark, cosy and colourful interiors, rather than the whites and greys of typical minimalist homes.

Note Design Studio has also applied similar thinking to some of its previous interiors projects, including a 1930s loft with a bright blue kitchen and a green-hued bistro elsewhere in Stockholm.

Pale yellow was chosen for the kitchen and dining room at the heart of the apartment. Here, a wooden table provides a dining space for six people, while a terrazzo island frame a kitchen in green and grey tones.

“Colour helps to emphasise the splendour in the detailing of the architecture,” Wåhlin said. “In fact, the approach to colour in architecture in the old days was

Many of Note Design Studio’s own products also dot the interiors, from the Silo pendant lamps to the Mango chair, while other embellishments include plants, framed black and white photographs, and simple rugs. “The result is a harmonious but rich colour experience,” added Wåhlin.

Redefine interior spaces with Forbo’s new award winning Marmoleum Linear collection Forbo’s new Marmoleum Linear sheet collection enables end users and specifiers working on refurbishment projects to redefine interior spaces through intriguing floor designs, by playing with texture, colour and installation directions. Recently presented with the iF Design Award, recognised as a symbol of design excellence around the world, the Marmoleum Linear sheet collection is divided into three ranges that reflect the latest trends across the office, retail, leisure and hospitality sectors. Striato Original offers a natural, earthy colour palette of twelve shades that enhance the contemporary linear design that runs throughout the collection. Or, to create a quirky, boutique feel, circular, triangular or hexagonal shapes can be cut into the sheet product. Specifiers can also combine the new textures with smooth finishes to add an extra dimension.” Marmoleum is a wholly sustainable floor covering, made up of 97% natural raw materials, 72% rapidly renewable and 43% recycled content. WELSH SLATE HELPS BRING INTEGRITY TO A BRITISH MUSEUM DEVELOPMENT Welsh Slate helps bring integrity to a British Museum development Flooring by Welsh Slate features in a new gallery at the British Museum. Natural slate flooring by Welsh Slate was specified for the refurbishment of a gallery at the British Museum for a multitude of reasons. Some 172m2 of various sizes of Cwt Y Bugail dark blue grey floor slates from Welsh Slate Ltd, part of the Lagan Group, were used on the redevelopment of the museum’s “Middle Room”, one of the oldest rooms in Sir Robert Smirke’s Georgian museum. They were specified by Purcell architects, the museum’s conservation architects and lead consultants, based on their working knowledge of the product which is produced from Welsh Slate’s quarry in Llan Ffestiniog in Snowdonia. Purcell partner Elizabeth Smith said: “The Welsh Slate flooring was specified to match historic finishes within the museum. It lends historic integrity to the proposals and makes the room harmonious with other areas of the museum. It also provides a durable and beautiful finish.” She added: “We work on lots of historic and listed British buildings

and Welsh Slate is a regular feature in these.” The Welsh Slate flooring, in a fine rubbed finish to give a smooth sheen, was installed over six weeks by specialist sub-contractor WB Simpson & Sons for main contractor Coniston, the museum’s framework contractor for more than 10 years. WB Simpson director Steve Valler said: “The project was a little more challenging than usual as there were manholes and temperature and climate-controlled showcases to work around but the Welsh Slate flooring performed very well.” The project involved an initial strip-out of the Middle Room, including the removal of the existing floor and other significant structural alterations, to facilitate the new Waddesdon Bequest gallery display. This is a collection of nearly 300 objects, left to the museum in 1898 by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild. It comprises medieval and Renaissance pieces, depicting a fascinating picture of the development of the art market in the late 19th Century. A Coniston spokesperson said: “As with all refurbishment works at the British Museum, the refurbishment - to include a complete new slate floor, a full decoration package, new M&E services and exhibition

Flooring Feature cases - was required to be completed to the highest standards, with exacting finishes to meet not only the client’s requirements but those of English Heritage due to the building’s listed status.” The new gallery space was designed by Stanton Williams to significantly improve the display of objects from the Waddesdon Bequest and to enable the collection to be better understood and enjoyed by the public.

To achieve this Purcell and Stanton Williams worked closely with the museum’s curatorial team on elements such as the re-use of the historic joinery to receive object displays and alterations to the floor structure and finishes to receive the new showcases. He spent 27 years as National Sales Manager at the company, before he left to take up a role in Bedford in 2015. Looking back on his career, he says his biggest achievement is developing Heckmondwike FB as a market leader in the Education sector, due to the durability and cost effectiveness of the product. Bob is looking forward to working closely with the sales and marketing teams to reignite the Heckmondwike FB brand and offering. His long term goals are to further develop the sales team and

work with the company’s existing network to increase opportunities in key market sectors, such as education and offices. Kathryn Keshmiri has been appointed to the company as Marketing Manager. Kathryn has worked in construction and specification for the past four years. She started her career in marketing with a chemical and biotechnology company and, after three years, moved into brand marketing and product management for one of the UK’s largest joinery manufacturers. He added: “Kathryn is a great addition to our marketing team and brings with her fresh ideas and experience of working with specifiers in both the public and private sectors. We are looking forward to continuing to ensure that Heckmondwike FB retains its number one position in the contract fibre bonded market.”

RECLAIMED FLOORING CO CELEBRATE PARTNER AWARD The Reclaimed Flooring Company, one of the most well-respected flooring companies in the UK, is pleased to have been part of one of the industry’s most talked about successes over the last year. The flooring expert, which prides itself on being a purveyor of sustainable living, was the design partner of Joao Botelho, of Casa Botelho, throughout his International Design and Architecture Award nominated project. The ambitious project saw the designer transform a plain London property into a house worthy of featuring in the finest interior design magazines. The Reclaimed Flooring Company supplied the flooring and wall

cladding used in the project, which acts as a glue to tie the whole design together. A wholly sleek and show-stopping transformation, unlike many designs where the flooring simply blends into the décor, the flooring and cladding is a real statement throughout the whole house. It flows effortlessly from room to room in order to bring the lavish theme together. The four-storey Victorian townhouse had to be completely resigned and structurally altered on the first two floors and in the basement in order for the vision to be created, while the rest of the property was made over to an almost unrecognisable standard.

HOW OAKLAND PROJECTS HELPED TO PUT THE SPRING BACK INTO VISPRING Luxury building firm Oakland Projects recently helped to put back the Spring back into ViSpring, the company that is renowned as the world’s leading mattress and bed supplier. ViSpring has just completed a major rebranding complete with a new logo which will help take the premier bed company into orbit. As part of the rebranding one important task was the complete refitting of ViSpring’s retail display area situated in the basement section of And So To Bed at its flagship outlet in Chelsea, central London. And So to Bed is a prestigious slumber specialist with over 30 stores throughout the UK. As the Kings Road outlet is open seven days a week it was important that the refurbishment project be completed with the minimum disruption and within the shortest period possible. To achieve its aims ViSpring called in London based Oakland Projects, a company that has worked closely with both ViSpring and And So to Bed over the past five years. Just six weeks was allowed for the completion of the project, which included demolition of interior walls and ceilings and the stripping out of all electrical wiring, the installation of new walls, ceilings, wiring, flooring and decoration, all to be completed as quietly as possible so as not to disturb customers overhead. The 3,000 sq ft area was fitted out with new plasterboard ceiling and walls finished in white and two-tone grey while the floor was completed using bleached oak. A hi tech lighting system was also installed with new graphics and light boxes with dimmable lighting schemes to match the 16 bed themes, which included light new fabrics. The work was completed on time for the new launch for the rebranding of the ViSpring company name and new logo to confirm the company’s position as the number one luxury bed and mattress supplier in the world with beds costing anything from £3,000 to £80,000. The new display area now features 16 bed displays with new beds, mattresses, fabrics, head boards and divan bases with ambient lighting designed to make customers feel at home. With nearly 30 years’ practical experience, covering all market sectors, Oakland Projects has the benefit of a nationwide labour force. The company specialises in luxury construction, fit-outs, upgrades, extensions and refurbishment programmes with a realistic work schedule for all clients. Oakland Projects now features a new website which showcases the company’s luxury building company’s impressive range of services, including bespoke shop fitting contracts.
