Latest News HAMLEYS OWNER AIMS FOR DEAL WITH HOUSE OF FRASER The Chinese owner of famed toy store Hamleys could become the majority shareholder on House of Fraser. The department store chain is 89% owned by Nanjing Xinjiekou Department Store, part of the Sanpower group. In March Nanjing said it was in talks to sell a 51% stake to Chinese tourism operator Wuji Wenhua. Now Hamleys owner C.banner international has said it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Nanjing to by the shares. It told shareholders a deal would its boost its ‘competitive strength’, particularly in the Chinese retail market and could create cost saving opportunities. Sanpower bought House of Fraser in 2014 for about £450m and in recent months has injected £30m in the 169-year-old retailer.
ONLINE MATTRESS MOVEMENT More consumers are now purchasing their mattresses online rather than in a store. According to The National Bed Federation, 51% of people who bought a mattress between September 2017 and the end of February 2018 did so online. Its survey of 500 shoppers found 47% bought in store. ‘This is the first time our consumer research has shown that online bed purchasing is preferable than buying in-store, confirming the steady rise of Internet shopping and ecommerce. It was also interesting to see the research showed there was little difference among the age groups this time, demonstrating that the over 55s are now as comfortable as their younger counterparts when it comes to using the Internet to make purchases,’ said Simon Williams, NBF marketing manager. The survey, which is carried out twice a year, also found that in mattress only sales, sales of flat mattresses fell from 44.5% to 40.2%. Roll up mattresses were up from 11.2% to 17.2%, making the share of mattress only
sales 57.4% of all bed products purchased. Some 65% of those aged over 55 bought a mattress on its own, compared to just 45% under 35 years old. Mattress and bedsteads accounted for 25% of sales (up from 21%) and divan sets 17.6% (down from 22%), indicating there may be a decline in the traditional divan set. Pocket springs are still the most popular mattress core (44%) with memory foam the most popular comfort layer (38%). More people are choosing king size (31%, up from 24%) but the standard double is still the most popular bed size (44%). The average price paid for a new bed/ mattress was £505.70 (up from £476.28), with the under 35s spending the most on their new bed (average spend £535.80). Purchases made at the big national bed specialists and local independent bed stores were down year-on-year (19% vs 23% and 9% vs 15% respectively) whereas buying from the ‘one size fits all’ start-up companies more than doubled going from 2% to 5% of market share. The most important factor in the purchasing decision was price at 58%, followed closely by comfort (56%).
RECORD SALES FOR FURNITURE FOR THE HOME Independent retailer Furniture For The Home is celebrating the first birthday of its Black Country showroom, after posting its best year yet. Furniture For The Home, which was set up as an online business in 2011 by Gornal entrepreneur Simon Foster, has seen sales soar to £1.15m in the past 12 months after it decided to launch its first ever store – investing £75,000 into transforming the County Wallpapers building outside Sedgley, West Midlands. Five new jobs have already been created to help cope with the expansion, with the possibility of more to follow. MD Simon Foster says: “There has been a lot of talk recently about the High Street being a thing of the past, but we’re disproving that theory by demonstrating you can be successful both online and in store. Over the last seven years we’ve built up strong partnerships with our suppliers and can sell the products in our showroom at the same price as we can on the website. 06 - Luxury Interiors Magazine
The difference is some consumers want to test beds, sofas and see how things look when placed in a living room environment. “The showroom on Dudley Road has given us the ideal opportunity to do just that. We’ve saved a famous building – once Jack Darby’s Picture House – from being turned into housing and made it into a destination venue for local people to come and discover great home and bedroom furniture and furnishings.” Work on the building in Sedgley took six months to complete and created 4500 sqft of open-plan space for 15 living/dining
room settings and a dedicated bedroom department. Simon concludes: “To say thank you to everyone who has supported us in the past 12 months we are hosting a special Birthday Weekend (May 4-7th) where there will be refreshments, spot prizes, giveaways and balloons for the children.” Furniture For The Home, which also operates an 8,000 sqft warehouse in the Black Country, expects to grow sales across its showroom and online operation, with plans in place to launch a new website in the next two months and expand the business to £1.5m by 2020.

The Brooklyn ‘House’ Painted With Monochrome Colours by CJ Hendry New York artist CJ Hendry created the series of seven single-coloured rooms for her Monochrome exhibition, to display new images she created of crumpled Pantone’s watches. Every room at this house in a Brooklyn warehouse is entirely one colour, from a green kitchen with grassy surfaces to a pink bedroom where a tub is overflowing with teddy bears. >>

“Art is the first thing (my collectors) add to space and they design their entire home around their collection,” said Hendry. “I have taken this concept to an extreme level.” The Australian artist has previously created hyper realistic black and white studies using her self-described scribbling technique. She started experimenting in colour last year for a collaborative exhibition with French fashion house Christian Louboutin. “People generally buy art as the last item; they find art to match their home. I have become close to my collectors over the years and have noticed how differently they live their lives.” >> 12 - Luxury Interiors Magazine

A 22,000 square foot industrial space in Brooklyn has been re-conceived as an all-encompassing colourscape. Divided across seven distinct rooms, New York-based artist CJ Hendry has envisioned ‘MONOCHROME’ as a walk-through tableau of vivid tones and tints, with each colour corresponding to the art hanging on the walls. The faux-home sees every area of the ‘house’ pained entirely in one, monochromatic colour. The spectacle, sure to make Instagrammers swoon in seas of saturated bliss, is on view from April 5, April 8, 2018 at 276 Greenpoint Ave. Modular plastic bricks by every block, which are similar to Lego but larger, were used to build the partitions – onto which the artist has mounted her artworks bearing different tones of the same hue.

Returning the ceiling to its rightful place
Above & Below - Austria Center Vienna - Austria
Scan any architecture journal, and you’ll see articles on nearly every part of building design. Building envelope and brickwork, glass façade, clever use of light and space – yet the ceiling takes a relative back seat, as an often blank, overshadowed canvas. It wasn’t always this way. Look back at the great buildings of old – from the Sistine Chapel through to Washington DC’s Library of Congress, from the palaces of Venice to the UK’s Houses of Parliament – and you’ll see form meeting function with a flourish. Ancient builders used the ceiling to convey meaning, like the spherical, holed ceiling of Rome’s Pantheon, seeing their ceilings as everything from religious tributes to markers of wealth and power. So what happened? New technologies, new cost and usage demands, new regulations. As the world moved on, the ceiling became less feature, more function, until we arrive at today, where ceilings are simply spaces for light fittings and concealing structural work. But times change… A greater choice of materials is inspiring architects and interior designers to push boundaries and seek out styles that focus the eye on the ‘sixth surface’, enhancing spaces with light, shape and form. We’re entering the age of the ‘aesthetic ceiling’ – so what might this look like? 16 - Luxury Interiors Magazine
Armstrong Ceiling Solutions’ A Book for 2018 is a coffee-table visual delight, a cornucopia of global showcase projects that prove ceilings are no longer an afterthought in the design and build process.
Austria Center Vienna, Austria
Here we detail how the company’s metal and mineral ceiling solutions helped bring a touch of luxury to the interiors of two particularly prestigious projects.
With 24 lecture rooms for between 100 and 4,320 participants, 180 meeting rooms and 22,000m² of exhibition space, the centre has an impressive total capacity of 20,000.
The Austria Centre Vienna is truly unique - the world’s only conference centre directly linked to a United Nations site.
Surrounded by state-of-the-art architecture and only seven minutes from the city centre and a short walk from the Danube and the Donaupark, the Austria Center Vienna offers a broad range of spaces unique in Europe. This is where ideas that change the world are discussed. Recent years have seen the opening of the modern business lounge and the Motto café in addition to structural changes to the former police station, the press room and the largescale kitchen to designs by architects Albert Wimmer and RRP Architekten, both of Vienna. The challenge was not to disrupt ongoing conference operations so the ambitious construction schedule required a precise planning process as well as a high level of flexibility in production, delivery and execution.
Above & Below - Moxy Hotel, Germany
The project started with the delivery and installation of ceilings in the café and the business lounge. A particularly eye-catching solution was chosen for these spaces – some 300 metal triangular canopies from the D-H 700 system which appear to be “floating” on the black soffit. This stunning effect is achieved by the use of a black suspension system and special suspensions. Then came the large-scale kitchen of the renowned Motto Catering company where some 1,600m² of custom metal Q-Clip F and R-Clip panels were installed. As the production of the ceilings for the press room and police station, using mineral Optima L round canopies and Optima baffles respectively, was taking place simultaneously, a precise scheduling of delivery and installation was critical here too. Then saw the expansion of the existing ceiling in the corridor outside the café and the business lounge. The big challenge here was adapting the 200m2 of new ceiling elements to the dated existing dated tiles. To meet this test, some tiles were taken to Armstrong’s metal ceilings factory in Rankweil to produce identical new elements and to achieve a harmonious match for the ceiling system and to save time, all wall connections were pre-assembled at the factory. Determining the precise actual dimensions and coordinating the work with other trades working on site simultaneously was absolutely key here but the result was the perfect integration of a new black suspension system and new panels with the existing sections without any discernible visual differences.
Moxy Hotel, Germany As part of the globe-spanning Marriott Hotels brand, Moxy Hotels are known worldwide for being chic, boutique accommodation that’s both stylish and affordable. The ceilings within these hotels need to reflect that, and in Germany, it was down to architects Vastint Hospitality to uphold the warm, relaxing yet contemporary look and feel of the Moxy brand and concept. Within this hotel’s corridors, 855m2 of Neeva Board mineral tiles in RAL 7043, as well as Prelude 24 XL2 suspension systems and perimeter trims in similar colours,
achieved the bold, modern aesthetic expected of the brand. Meanwhile, in the hotel’s meeting rooms, a ceiling solution comprising 18m2 of metal Axal Vector tiles in RAL 7043 and 220m2 of Perla OP 0.95 MicroLook and Board tiles provided an effective balance between hospitable aesthetics and practical acoustics, while being efficient and easy to install within a tight timeframe, to exacting corporate standards. The Perla OP 0.95 tiles used at the Moxy Hotel were the first mineral ceiling tiles in Europe to win Cradle to Cradle™ certification.

Tang Interiors is appointed to deliver £750,000 conference and events facility at Park Regis Birmingham Tang Interiors, a group company of Colmore Tang Construction, has been appointed to create a brand new conference and events facility at the deluxe four-star Park Regis hotel in Birmingham. The firm - which specialises in refurbishment and interiors for the commercial, retail, restaurant and hospitality sectors - is remodelling the hotel’s 16th floor into a 5,250 sq ft open-plan conference space for up to 440 delegates, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering 360° views across the city. The 15th floor - where the current conference facilities are - will also be transformed to create additional meeting rooms and breakout areas, as well as a new bar area. Worth £750,000, the project involves stripping out the existing bar and restaurant on the top floor and transforming it into a completely versatile space. “We’ve been appointed to deliver an inspirational conference and events space that has the wow factor but is still in keeping with the luxurious feel of the rest of the hotel,” explained Carl Hubbard, Operations Director at Tang Interiors.
18 - Luxury Interiors Magazine
The firm will construct two new bars and install contemporary lighting, state-of-theart audiovisual and new air conditioning to provide the highest level of comfort and technology for delegates and visitors, while specially-selected furniture and upholstery will complete the look. Tang Interiors will also install Bolon tiled flooring; an innovative Swedish product that is impervious to spillage and offers sound attenuation.
to be complete by mid-June. The hotel will remain open as usual for the duration of the refurbishment. “As interior fit out specialists, we are used to working in live environments and therefore understand the importance of keeping noise and disruption to an absolute minimum,” said Carl. “We are liaising with hotel staff on a daily basis to ensure guests are not disturbed by our work.”
“We’ve worked closely with Park Regis and architects Tibbatts Abel to design every aspect of the space so that we can deliver a high-quality conference facility that reflects the prestigious brand and ensures the hotel remains one of the most popular city centre venues for hosting events,” continued Carl.
As well as the new conference space, Tang Interiors will also provide a dedicated entrance on floor one which will take delegates directly to the 16th floor, where there will be a new welcoming reception and cloakroom area. External signage will also be upgraded in keeping with the new reception area.
Work started at the beginning of April and the new conference facilities are expected

Lighting Project
A Glowing Mediterranean Meze Haz restaurant, London Located in the City of London, Haz Restaurant provides a fresh approach to modern Mediterranean cuisine. Leading lighting design consultancy Nulty, worked alongside architects Mailen Design and branding agency I-AM to complete the lighting scheme for the modern and quirky refurbishment of this much-loved Turkish establishment. Spanning the ground floor of an office building, a large glass façade surrounds the building’s entrance giving passers-by a floor-to-ceiling view into the restaurant. An intimate dining and bar area to the front features a dropped ceiling made from dark

wooden slats. Nestled between are cleverly hidden bespoke can downlights, positioned to form pools of warm light above the tables and bar, picking up the sparkle in the glass and silverware below. An integrated linear line of light under the bar counter washes light down the copper finish to highlight the warmth and opulence in the material palette. The all-LED lighting scheme supports the interior design concept, which is based on the art of Turkish coffee, and the balance between the bitter and sweet or light and dark. Two undulating ceiling features create a strong design statement and look like luminaires in their own right. Discreetly positioned
LEDs around the edge of the features’ white moulded surfaces create a wash of illumination reminiscent of rippled coffee and a strong contrast against the rich timber slats framing them. Large mirrors mount the burnt cocoa textured walls surrounding the dining area and have been backlit to create a warm halo that illuminates the vertical surfaces and entices people into the space from the street outside. A soft perimeter glow that frames the dining area is achieved by uplights positioned behind the seating, creating an additional layer of light and highlighting the interior’s different textures.
Two timber walls that frame either end of the venue have copper bespoke circular disk wall lights mounted to them, creating a reflective surface that radiates a diffused light
around the edges and draws customer’s eyes down the full length of the restaurant. Sparkling neon signage punctuates the walls and highlights the brand’s bold spirit.
The lighting scheme continues into the washrooms, where mirrors have been backlit to create focal points and contrast against the dark interior palette. Within the cubicles light levels have been kept low with cove lighting washing the back walls adding to the drama. The main circulation area has carefully positioned downlights to help with wayfinding. Haz is a dining experience that evolves so a lighting control system was installed to enable the client to select the right scene for the right time of day, making light a central component of the space. Energy-efficient lighting was also key to the brief and Nulty achieved this through approximately 19 watts per square metre. Anna Sandgren, Associate says, “The lighting was carefully considered to complement architectural design of the restaurant. The dark interior palette and lighting design details create a huge dose of contrast for a dramatic, yet chic, feel that celebrates the brands bold spirit and Mediterranean elegance.” Luxury Interiors Magazine - 21

TP BENNETT DESIGNED 30 LOMBARD ST FULLY LET TO ST JAMES PLACE McKay Securities PLC, has exchanged contracts to let the entirety of its 58,000 sq ft speculative office development, Aurum, at 30 Lombard Street in the City of London. The high-quality office building designed by architects tp bennett has been pre-let on a 15-year term to FTSE 100 wealth manager, St. James’s Place plc (“St. James’s Place”). Tp bennett’s concept design for Aurum, a Grade A office building was inspired by Lombard Street’s financial heritage using an elegant palette of stone, bronze and glass to enhance this internationally recognised core City location. The building is set across 11 floors and benefits from column free floorspace and excellent natural light as a result of its corner location. The team collaborated with renowned architectural artist Kate Maestri who introduced a gold accent to the building design through a façade artwork that references the sites’ historical connection with the weaving Guilds, a precursor to the banking industry, which was to make the street so renowned.
Designed to make wetrooms even sleeker and cleaner, the Infinity single-fall shower tray by Abacus Elements is the only product of its kind on the market today where the slopes of the tray former and drain are fully integrated and sealed. This allows for straightforward installation and provides a truly unified, leak free and secure wetroom. The Infinity single-fall shower tray by Abacus Elements helps achieve a subtle style statement and a minimalist look as the tiles fall seamlessly into the wall. The cleverly conceived tray eliminates the need for fiddly floor tile cuts and grout lines, with their potential to look unsightly and trap dirt, while also avoiding the problem of damaging leaks. Fast and professional installation is easily achieved on both timber and screeded floors. The Infinity single fall tray may be installed level with the floor or can be raised using a sub-element to draw attention to the shower area. The tileable slot drain is perfect for large format tiles and 700mm or 1000mm drain lengths are available, both featuring a high capacity drain trap. Ensuring a complete, easy and trouble-free wetroom solution, the competitively priced Infinity wetroom tray kits from Abacus Elements are supplied with waterproof-ing tape and a comprehensive installation kit. David Blair, Principal Director of Tp bennett said: “In designing this building, we were acutely aware of the significant location. Our solution not only reflected the client’s aspiration for a highquality building, which responded to the sites heritage, but was also aesthetically modern, elegant and nuanced. Achieving a column-free interior space required clever engineering, but the complexity is largely invisible in the final design. The investment is fully justified as it will ensure this unique new building is befitting for one of the most historic streets in The City of London.”

The substantial roof terrace overlooks the 17th century Wren church opposite and other iconic city buildings. The scheme is one of a very limited number of medium sized new office developments set for completion in the City core during 2018, with this shortage contributing to the decision by St. James’s Place to commit early.
27/04/2018 12:15:36
Simon Perkins, Chief Executive of McKay, commented: “There is something special about the history and the presence of this internationally recognised City core location, which our development will both complement and benefit from. We look forward to completing this stunning City of London property for St. James’s Place, and providing them with a prominent and highly attractive workspace for employees and clients alike. “This isn’t just a landmark letting for McKay and another boost for the City core but a substantial vindication of the strategy we have been pursuing since our capital raise in 2014. The 38% reversion in our portfolio continues to be transformed into income and we have plenty more to go for, generating further momentum for McKay and our shareholders. “What the Lombard Street redevelopment also highlights is the technical and logistical complexity of providing new office floorspace in such constrained surroundings. St. James’s Place has secured one of the few new build opportunities of this size, and these practical, as well as financial, constraints will continue to restrict occupier choice in the City core. What the letting also highlights once again is the importance that must be placed on creating the right kind of high quality space for occupiers. Uniquely placed with our sole focus on London and the South-East, we are acutely aware of tenant needs and will continue to create relevant and flexible space for today’s businesses.” Knight Frank and Savills acted on behalf of McKay while Doherty Baines acted for St. James’s Place.

THE AVOCADO GENERATION Even at the luxury end of the bathroom market, there has been little innovation in sanitary-ware in recent years, so when a client of ours in the film industry asked us to design them something unique, we wondered if it was time for a revival. We wanted to create a sense of glamour and so often designers think glamour and end up with a deco inspired look. We wanted a fresher take on a classic design and looked instead to the glamour of PanAM, Farrah Fawcett and the 70’s, which led us to the avocado palette! This palette is then modernised with bespoke lighting, ‘chunky’ brushed brass taps and ironmongery and ‘cool’ grey Carrara marble. The use of greys continues into the joinery and furniture. Allowing the avocado to be the focus, the palette is kept quite clipped to create a sense of calm with photography chosen to compliment and add ‘splashes’ of colour. 24 - Luxury Interiors Magazine

UNIQUE NEW WOOL YARN BEHIND LATEST KASTHALL ORIGINALS For the 2018 collection Legacy of Tomorrow, Kasthall has developed new yarn qualities and techniques for weaving and tufting, which are clearly reflected in Katja and Freyja, two rugs from the new collection. Both are tufted using new wool yarn with a unique undulating, felt-like character, giving them a luxurious yet robust look and feel. Kasthall has incorporated the wool in different ways into both new rugs. Inspired by fashion designer Katja of Sweden’s 60/70s patterns, the idea for Katja’s wavy, graphic pattern was born. The wool is unusually voluminous, facilitating the creation of Katja’s curly, undulating surface. Indeed, this unique surface inspired the Kasthall Design Studio to create a sister rug, Freyja.
In Katja, the wool is tufted in different blunt cut heights, creating a mischievous, graphic pattern. In Freyja, an uncut bouclé tufting in combination with the unique qualities of the
new wool, create an irregular, rugged surface, bringing to mind moss and soil. www.kasthall.com
LIGHTART BRINGS SCULPTURAL ELEMENTS COLLECTION TO THE UK Inspired by the gracefulness of feminine proportions, the new Josephine sofa by Gordon Guillaumier is simple yet sophisticated with an elegant silhouette. Josephine is a distinct piece of furniture with a direct reference to legendary Afro-American entertainer Joséphine Baker, who rose to fame during the 1930’s and throughout her life was a provocative symbol of female empowerment.
Designed for the contract sector but equally suitable for a residential setting, Josephine is at home in any space. Luxury Interiors Magazine - 25
You can never have enough of a good thing, so they say. But lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking luminary pieces by the Wiener Werkstaette and the Bauhaus, having long fallen out of production. This is the story of WOKA, the Viennabased manufacturer that set out to bring a significant slice history back to life. Craftsmanship lies at the heart of the enterprise, with Karolinksy and his team taking pains to ensure that each piece that leaves their atelier remains true to the fabrication techniques of the original designs. ‘Our workshop is producing in the same way as the Wiener Werstätte did when it was operating from 1903 to 1932,’ says Karolinsky. ‘We are about 20 people and that’s enough. We never wanted to be a big company, just a company that is able to deliver quality.’ The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a Who’s Who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. Commerically minded Karolinsky is without 26 - Luxury Interiors Magazine
doubt – this is a business, after all – but it’s also more than that, the entrepreneur’s absolute passion for the oft forgotten designs he brings back to life inextricable from the daily business of producing and selling. ‘We have had the licence for a very strange, very early Josef Hoffmann design with the punched sheet for over 30 years,’ he explains. ‘But nobody wanted it. Yet I’ve loved it all this time because I know it’s great design. Hoffmann really invented the modern. It’s only now that people are starting to buy these kinds of lamps that I’ve kept for decades. A normal businessman would have got rid of them a long time ago.’ Designs that take to stage a second time, particularly after a long absence, aren’t with their own set of problematics, however. ‘Original’, ‘reissue’, ‘reproduction’. It may just seem like a bunch of semantics, but
attending each of these terms is a particular value. At what point is a classic design no longer faithful to its original iteration once it’s been subjected to modifications, ones due either to changes in technology or to shifts in market appeal or consumer need? For Karolinsky, whose company holds over 200 design licences, it’s not always been easy to convince people of the authenticity, as it were, of his enterprise, but, that said, he has witnessed over time a definite change in the way his products are viewed. ‘In the early days, people often thought I was doing fakes,’ he says. ‘They were very purist. Now there are new generations of admirers of these works and they appreciate the quality of our production. They know the original pieces are in museums and not available to buy.’ www.woka.com Photography: Thomas Gobauer
Lighting Project
fdcreative Brings the Luxury of Light to Talan Tower fdcreative were approached by architecture and design firm Perkins + Will to be part of a professional international team to design a scheme for the headquarters of Astana Properties, in Astana, Kazakhstan. The 12,500 sq m commercial workplace has a mixed-use purpose, consisting of office space, retail space and residential space.
28 - Luxury Interiors Magazine
The brief was to design the lighting for the main reception area of the office, as well as the lift lobbies and the two top floors which consisted of client facing Executive floors and the Chief Executive’s suites.
Working closely with Perkins & Will, the finshed design reflected a super luxe and superior quality to the designated areas as well as a subtle yet sophisticated touch for the Executive floors. The lighting needed to be flexible and energy efficient meeting all local standards and requirements
including LEED. fdcreative’s approach to the lighting was to create a vibrant welcoming space as people entered the building that reflected the Astana high quality values.

To fulfil the design aesthetics fdcreative developed a bespoke LED back lit glass ceiling. Dual white LED controls allows the ceiling to change between cool white and warm white changing the mood of the entrance hall when required. Within the ceiling fdcreative also included integral directional high output LED downlights providing accent lighting to the space. The lighting leading from the main reception area to the lift lobbies was deliberately changed to a slightly warmer tone, and the lighting integrated into the feature ceiling was designed to keep in line with the clean architectural lines Perkins + Will wanted to achieve. Bespoke glass light boxes were created for the lift lobbies to provide a link and common language as you enter the building and move between the floors. Lighting to the client facing floors and the CEO floors had to provide a modern sophisticated look in keeping with the finishes proposed by Perkins + Will. Accent lighting was provided to all seating areas focusing on the furniture elements while linear cove lighting and down lights were used within the corridor areas. The ceilings were also edge lit with LED lighting to give a flexible solution for each room. All lighting was fully dimmable and controlled via the building lighting control system. >> Luxury Interiors Magazine - 31

Lyndon unveils coffee table by Mark Gabbertas
20%. off..
Another successful collaboration between Lyndon by Boss Design and award-winning furniture designer, Mark Gabbertas, has unveiled a striking low coffee table to add to Lyndon’s exquisite table collection. Harnessing Lyndon’s renowned expertise in handcrafting timber with the design vision of Mark Gabbertas, the 120 table is a fusion of classic and contemporary design that is destined to complement a range of executive reception and hospitality interiors. The table takes its inspiration from a bold yet elegant three-way leg split that preserves a 120-degree angle. It is this defined shape, lines, and form that were to inspire the name of the table. To further emphasise the natural beauty of this product and to showcase the crafted joints and solid timber underframe, a 12mm toughened circular glass top with a bronze tint and polished edges provides a refined and poised arrangement. Sitting at 380mm high, the table is available in a choice of European Oak or American Black Walnut, with the option of a coloured painted frame.
Discount Code: LuxuryInteriors20
Commenting on this latest collaboration, Mark Gabbertas said: “The 120 Table is an exercise in geometric simplicity…..the solid wood frame supports a round bronze tinted glass top which is secured to the frame. The glass allows the geometry of the frame to be apparent and also detail of the frame to be visible. Specifically, the frame is divided into three equal sections that meet in the centre via a precision milled wooden junction.”

The 120 table is testament to Mark’s extraordinary design ability combined with the degree of craftsmanship that goes into creating every piece of Lyndon furniture. Together with its refined aesthetic, we are confident that this latest table will meet the demands of any commercial space.”

OSMO UK PROTECTS THE HEART OF THE HOME Floor maintenance specialist, Conrad Park turned to Osmo UK when renovating and refreshing an existing oak floor in a family kitchen. Thanks to its hardwearing properties and aesthetically pleasing finish, Polyx-Oil was the ideal choice to rejuvenate the room in the heart of the home. When the client requested a timeless appearance that would refresh and protect the wooden floor in the kitchen, Conrad Park recognised that two coats of Osmo UK Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044 would create the desired result. Preparation of the three-day project began with 60 grit sanding, before abrading with a mesh disc on 120 grit. The floor was then thoroughly vacuumed to remove the residual of dust before applying the finish. Due to Osmo UK finishes being very viscid, and containing both oil and wax, the wood absorbs the finish to provide a smooth surface, resulting in the extra level of sanding not being required. Conrad Park applied the natural finish with an Osmo UK microfibre roller. For the hard to reach areas, including the edges, corners and under the kitchen island, Conrad Park opted for an Osmo UK flat brush. The finish was applied thinly, using just under two 2.2L to achieve the desired look.

“Osmo UK is by far my favourite wood finish to use both internally and externally” explains Conrad. “It’s incredibly easy to apply, gives the floor a natural look, protects the surface against spillages, and most important, is easy to maintain.”

At home with Diespeker and the ‘Bond’ terrazzo The name of London stone specialist Diespeker & Co has become synonymous with lavish terrazzo for extravagant interiors. The company has successfully developed a range of standard and standard plus terrazzo along with stunning, bespoke handmade designs. There is one particular terrazzo design that has really caught the imagination of clients with retail and residential projects. It is now the best-selling terrazzo of all – a standard terrazzo Diespeker calls TE007, nicknamed the ‘Bond’ terrazzo. It’s distinctive design, available in cement or resin based terrazzo, has become an increasingly popular feature on the interiors circuit not just in London but across the UK and overseas. TE007 is a stand-out mix of black, browns, greys and white combining subtlety with statement. Equally at home in the kitchen and
bathroom, TE007 is the perfect backdrop for many residential projects, combining interest with neutrality to work with any design choice. The material is extremely durable and hard wearing. It hides dirt and water-marks well, yet is incredibly easy to clean, often resulting in a voguish sheen. As smooth and sophisticated as James Bond himself. The Bond effect can be seen in a recently refurbished luxury Wimbledon home, where the kitchen and hallway flaunt TE007 cement based terrazzo tile flooring. The black granite island and worktop in Indian Black granite introduce a stark contrast, with the highly polished finish reflecting the speckled terrazzo. Terrazzo skirting and two terrazzo covered steps serve to create a unified look for the floor area. Bringing the outside in, TE007 also features on the garden patio. The stunning shower room illustrates well the versatility of TE007 in resin terrazzo, with matching floor and wall cladding giving a warm contrast to modern white sanitaryware. Three terrazzo alcoves with lights are built in to the shower. Diespeker is also known for skills with natural stone, and the family bathroom harks back to the glory days of marble. This was created in high quality Tuscan Carrara marble with a hint of bookmatching in the design, using diagonal lines to create a sense of space and offering a classic sense of opulence. In perfect contrast to Carrara’s white stone with dark grey veins, the Spanish marble Nero Marquina floor is black with white veins, creating a sense of drama. There is further drama in the ensuite shower room with striking red marble, Rosso Levante taking centre stage. Dark red with white veins and the occasional hint of green and black, this Italian marble creates a stunning visual impact and has been used carefully with

an abundance of stark white to contrast its dramatic tones. The house is a showcase for the versatility of terrazzo and natural stone. From refined tones to dramatic notes, these materials will stand the test of time with the minimum of maintenance. Founded in 1881, Diespeker has been developing unrivalled skills with terrazzo, including leading-edge technical advancements in moulded resin terrazzo and devising methods of bending the material to allow curved cladding for countertops.
