Awards News ARIGHI BIANCHI WINS FAMILY BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD Macclesfield-based furniture house, Arighi Bianchi, has been crowned ‘Retail Family Business of the Year 2018’ at a prestigious national awards ceremony. The Family Business of the Year Awards celebrate the best of British family businesses, champion the family business story and help to give a voice to the significant contribution that family firms make to the UK economy. Arighi Bianchi, is independently and family owned and has been since it was established in 1854 by Antonio Arighi and his cousin Antonio Bianchi, both originally from Northern Italy. Their landmark store opened in 1892, selling high quality handmade furniture which gained a nationwide reputation and the patronage of kings. Modelled on the original Crystal Palace, the Grade II* listed store is located on the historic Silk Road in Macclesfield and is still directly owned and run by the Bianchi family. Over its 164-year history it has become famous for its huge selection of furniture, wealth of knowledge and expertise, and its
store has remained an iconic focal point in the town and across the North West. Roman helped Barnard Castle School over the year by attending each challenge and providing them with advice and help whenever needed. The team also had a couple of trips to Roman’s Headquarters, where they were introduced to each department and shown the manufacturing process. The team developed an ambitious business plan which created hydrogen from natural local resources to fuel agricultural machinery. BRITISH INSTITUTE OF INTERIOR DESIGN WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT At its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the National Army Museum, the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) presented its two prestigious Institute awards and officially welcomed new BIID President Gilly Craft The BIID AGM provides members with the chance to learn about the Institute’s progress over the past twelve months and vote in new directors. The AGM also recognises the achievements of individual BIID members who have made a valuable contribution to the institute. The AGM marked the official hand-over to new BIID President Gilly Craft, who takes over from Charles Leon. Gilly is a long standing and experienced member of the BIID council, previously being CPD Director, chairing the CPD committee and working with members of the BIID Council to ensure BIID Registered Interior Designers are fully informed and qualified. Gilly began her working life as an air stewardess, with global travel inspiring her love of architecture and design. She later enrolled at the Regent Academy, completing the Interior Design Diploma with a distinction and went on to teach an Interior Design City and Guilds course. She soon started designing for clients and gradually gave up tutoring and started her own Studio. Koubou Interiors has since become an award-winning practice in Healthcare Design with a wide range of clients.

New design trends through the eyes of ANARCHITECT – Jonathan Ashmore Jonathan Ashmore, founder and director of the international architecture and design practice ANARCHITECT predicts the new design trends following last month’s Milan Design Week. Influence of the Tropics “I have spotted a subtle influence of the Tropics. Statement pieces by Dimore Studio used highly lacquered cane and bamboo framed within machined metals and alloys, while new Lebanese designers, like Khaled El Mays seen at the Nilufar Depot, further challenged traditional use of rattan and cane with his bold contemporary pieces.” Natural and earthy tones “Whilst bold, pristine colours were still prominent, there appears to be a noticeable shift towards natural and earthy tones and a definitive movement towards handmade rather than machined perfection. Pigments offer less uniformity but add depth and character to plasters finishes and concrete tiles for both interiors and exteriors. Examples include Gypsum Arte’s new collections and Matteo Brioni’s Stratigraphies. Technology is the new craft “On the other hand, some companies, like Cedit, have embraced technology as the new craft with their Rilievi collection. They use advanced manufacturing techniques to create textures and 3D geometric forms which play with colour consistency and rely on light and shadow to add depth to forms. They have used technology to evoke a ‘manmade’ aesthetic.” Glass is back “Glass is one of the materials making a strong come back. One of the great examples of this trend is the Bouroullec brothers’ collaboration with Wonderglass on hand-blown coloured objects with purposeful imperfections and organic forms. Latest News BFM SUPPORT FURNITURE APPRENTICESHIP A brand new industry-specific Furniture Apprenticeship will allow young people to learn skills on the job while gaining a Level 3 qualification. The training scheme, funded and supported by the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) as well as The Furniture Makers’ Company (FMC), will allow apprentices to train for a spectrum of jobs including; a bespoke furniture-maker, advanced CNC technician and an advanced upholsterer.

Approval of the furniture designer module is still awaited but expected to follow shortly. “Apprenticeships are a great way to bring a fresh perspective into a business, and with substantial training and development, are beneficial to both the employee and employer. The new scheme will also present the industry with the opportunity to advance individuals to a level that will help fill the skills gap” said Jackie Bazeley, managing director of BFM. A registered community design gives protection in all countries of the EU. Mr Catterall spoke about copyright issues affecting the wallcoverings industry at the annual congress of IGI, the Global Wallcoverings Association in Portugal.

UK INTERIOR REFURBISHMENT & FIT-OUT SECTOR INCREASED BY 6% IN 2017 The interior fit-out and refurbishment market -as defined in AMA Research’s latest report on the sector - has increased by 34% since 2013, in value terms, and rose by 6% within the last year alone. However, annual growth levels are starting to slow, and more constrained growth is forecast, for reasons including the uncertain state of the UK economy, a deferral of major investment decisions, cuts to public sector budgets and a continued scaling back of large construction programmes. Fit out and interior refurbishment output has increased steadily in recent years, especially within sectors such as commercial offices, education and leisure & entertainment. For a variety of reasons, many private sector clients have chosen to commission interior refurbishment works rather than costlier and potentially more disruptive new build projects. Ongoing shortages of Grade A office space in many parts of the UK have also contributed towards much of the recent market growth. In the public sector, reductions in capital spending programmes and the trend towards smaller but more suitable estate portfolios has led to increased interest in refurbishment in industries such as
education and healthcare. Organisations such as NHS trusts and universities have tended to reassess and refresh their existing assets, rather than taking on more expensive new build projects. “In many end use sectors, demand for refurbishment services is also being led by changes in the way industries operate, such as a much greater emphasis upon technology-based learning in schools and universities, as well as rising expectations amongst students, which have led to significant improvements in many higher education institution facilities” said Fiona Watts of AMA Research. “Annual levels of growth of around 2-3% are forecast for the next few years.” Commercial offices constitute the largest market for interior refurbishment and fit-out services, accounting for 27% of value in 2017. The shortage of Grade A office space has contributed to growth in retrofit refurbishment and remodelling of existing space, whilst considerations such as changing patterns of working and energy or sustainability concerns are also affecting ways in which offices are being designed. Opportunities in the retail sector are expected to decline over the coming

years. Store conversions and interior refurbishments remain important to many of the UK’s leading retailers, however many are now rationalising their estates in the face of greater competition from online shopping channels. Others with a high-street presence such as pubs, restaurants and betting shops also face similar challenges, although overall the leisure and entertainment sector is forecast to grow, driven by clients such as budget hotel and gym/fitness club operators. Education represents the second largest sector for interior refurbishment in the UK. In the higher education sector, there are significant opportunities for fit-out and refurbishment work going forward, and investment in areas such as student accommodation and learning and recreational facilities continues to grow, as establishments bid to stand out from their rivals to attract students. At the same time, the healthcare sector share is expected to remain unchanged for the next few years, although looking further ahead, the predicted expansion of the care homes sector may assume increasing significance within the healthcare market.

PROPERTY OWNERS ARE WASTING £107BILLION WORTH OF SPACE IN THEIR HOMES Property owners are wasting £107billion worth of space in their homes, according to research. Experts found homeowners are failing to make the most of space in their home due to bulky TV cabinets and stands taking up large chunks of the floor. In fact, the study - carried out as the housing market slows down - found they can take up to £3,066 worth of space in the average home. The survey also revealed 49 per cent of Brits point to the living room as their favourite room in the house, with the TV being the most common focal point. Despite this, adults across the UK have widespread dissatisfaction with their living rooms, with over half feeling they are not utilising the space they have. The research was commissioned by Samsung as consumer demand for larger screen televisions has seen a drastic increase, with analysts seeing 38 per cent growth in sales of TVs that are 65” or larger, in the last year. Samsung are working in collaboration with
one of Britain’s finest interior designers, Mel Massey, to showcase how a big screen TV can complement the living room, rather than dominate. Massey, said: “With space in our homes being as precious as ever, and most homeowners agreeing that they would like some more space we have had to become space savvy with the way we design and style our homes and appliances – and our TVs are no exception. “In the past we have only ever have two options when it comes to displaying our TV, either in a cupboard out of sight or on a stand in the room – as an interior designer I would always choose for it to be out of sight. “Now we have a way of displaying it that enables us to use the TV as a feature.” In a time where the size of UK homes are continually shrinking, living rooms are suffering the most, being 32 per cent smaller than back in 1970’s. Space is therefore very valuable, and with desirable TV’s growing in screen size and nearly one in 10 Brits blame their TV stand
and unsightly and bulky appearance for their limited space. With more than half of Brits wishing they had more floor space in their living room, as well as feeling as if they aren’t making the most of the space, these design features will allow for the nation to claim back the £107billion worth of space in our homes. Staggeringly, 67 per cent of people still use a stand for their TV; the new Samsung QLED range and The Frame TV can both be wall mounted with a near invisible cable, seamlessly fitting into your interior. Rob King, Vice President of Consumer Electronics at Samsung UK said: “We’re seeing consumer demand for bigger and bigger TV sizes, but at Samsung we have challenged ourselves to create a larger TV that complements a home without being overbearing. With Ambient Mode on QLED and Art Mode on The Frame TV, we give consumers the ability to have the best of both worlds, meaning no one will have to compromise on either screen size or home décor choices again.”
NBF TO IMPLEMENT RANDOM PRODUCT TESTING The National Bed Federation is to introduce random product testing to see if mattresses, bases and headboards meet its Code of Practice. Products made by NBF members and non-members will be bought on the open market. Products will be subject to flammability tests, then cut open and specifications checked against marketing claims. Textile composition labelling information will be looked for and enquiries will be made about chemicals and other featured treatments to ensure compliance with REACH and Biocides regulations. Up to 50 products will be purchased in a year.

They can’t look inside a mattress to see what’s there, so they have to take on trust what they’re told it contains. “With this new random testing programme we aim to go a step further towards exposing the dishonesty that so frustrates reputable traders. We want to make people think twice about what they’re buying, especially if it looks like a “great bargain”. “We also hope it will give customers even further reassurance that buying a product made by an NBF member is worth it,’ said Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director.

INRES At the five-storey Inres offices in Florence, Italy, the entrance acts as a transition between indoors and outdoors with floor-toceiling windows and a profusion of natural materials. The open space is anchored by a reception desk, above which hangs a trio of sleek Skan pendants. Designed by Lievore, Altherr, Molina, the lamp’s striking simplicity and pure form is perfectly in keeping with
the room’s minimalist mien and organic sensibility.
NH CIUDAD DE SANTIAGO Located in Santiago, Chile, the elegant NH Ciudad de Santiago hotel welcomes visitors with a dramatic entryway featuring a sweeping, circular staircase panelled in brass. Lighting design firm Opendark deployed Toan Nguyen’s Algorithm pendant, affixed to the ceiling with a striking tubular steel lattice. Suspended over the steps, its long cables are studded with glowing, hand-blown glass spheres that recall a sparkling constellation and draw the eye upwards to a clear focal point.

VESTA INTERIOR DESIGN NOTES INCREASED DEMAND FOR MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING Luxury interior designer Vesta Interior Design has seen a trend in homeowners requiring a solution to allow multiple generations to live in harmony under one roof. This has traditionally been popular among Middle Eastern and Asian families, but Vesta notes an increase among British and European buyers as a result of the current property market conditions.
With moving now so expensive, and both upsizing and downsizing coming with their own challenges, many families are opting to consolidate their potential purchasing power and buy together. Indeed, they recently undertook a project for leading developer St James at their Fitzroy Gate development in Isleworth to do just this.
Chris Dale, Managing Director at Vesta Interior Design, comments: “Multigenerational living is becoming an increasingly popular way of life and we have seen a real shift in the layouts of new homes and the brief when designing the interiors for a property. We recently undertook a project for leading developer St James at their Fitzroy Gate development in Isleworth where a key demographic at this development was extended family groups and multi-generational living, compared to most developers who are targeting downsizers. Multi-generational living has always applied culturally to Asian and Middle Eastern families, but we are seeing an extension of this with British buyers and Europeans.” Fitzroy Gate comprises of four, five and six bedroom family houses on a gated estate on the banks of the River Thames. Not only will the Grade II listed estate be converted in 39 flats and houses, it will also offer a care home for the elderly. Vesta has recently completed a show home at the scheme which appeals to every generation from grandparents to adult children and the traditional nuclear family. This is all thanks to clever layouts and multi-use spaces. Chris adds: “Fitzroy Gate has a real sense of Luxury Interiors Magazine - 27
community and a family structure which applies to all ages. The new show home caters to the different demands of these age groups within a single abode, offering both a formal living area and a relaxed area to entertain, along with plenty of seating to cater to all at meal times. “The formal dining area is the most important part of the home and for many cultures – including Chinese and Indian – it’s an area which showcases a family’s status. Therefore, we had to make sure that as well as flexible, it was elegant, impressive and a room the family could be proud of. With this in mind, we used high quality furniture, luxurious finishes and grand artwork on the walls, making sure it really stood out to anyone who visited.” The dining area was completed with an oversized table, with bench seating on one side which would allow lots of people to fit around the table. For the older generation, comfortable dining chairs make up the rest of the table’s seating. The relaxed entertainment area is tailored to the younger generation, with a focus on comfort and media, but again with a lot of seating. Vesta made sure it was fully equipped for watching television and using computers, but also for playing board games as a family – a space where everyone can relax together. As well as ensuring the space was functional for the whole family, it was also important for individuals to have their own space, so Vesta had to consider tailoring the bedrooms to this requirement. Chris adds: “Every room had full media capabilities, with all bedrooms pre-wired should they wish to add an entertainment system, such as Sonos, allowing people to enjoy their own space, with their own music. “When it came to design, it was important that each room was designed to suit each generation; the master and second bedroom were situated on the first floor and we took a more traditional approach to the design of these rooms as they would be used by the parents and grandparents of the family. Both had an ensuite bathroom for convenience. The kids’ bedrooms were on the second floor, with their own shared bathroom, and were large enough for additional seating should they wish to have friends over or have some privacy from the rest of the family as they grow older. The upstairs space was somewhat self-contained, which is appealing to families who have children who will likely want independence as they grow older.” Isleworth itself is a small town which offers a village setting within easy commute of Central London, and its riverside location is appealing to residents of all ages and Fitzroy Gate has a real sense of community. Residents even have use of a private communal garden space where they can entertain on the banks of the Thames, giving a family further flexibility. Furthermore, later in life, elderly members can make use of the onsite care home, giving their children the peace of mind that comes with being close by. 28 - Luxury Interiors Magazine

The introduction of tuneable white LED technology has another benefit within the showroom as it enables Bisley’s clients to view furniture finishes under various colour temperatures, mimicking the exact lighting levels and colour temperature being replicated within their own space, giving them piece of mind that the furniture is going to be precisely what is required when it arrives on site.
Bespoke lighting from FUTURE designs creates a dynamic lighting scheme for one of Clerkenwell’s newest Showroom FUTURE Designs has created a bespoke lighting scheme for the interior of Bisley’s new showroom in the heart of Clerkenwell – the home of the UK’s design community. The stunning new space is multi-functional, used as an office, showroom and event space and an important chapter in the evolution of Bisley, showcasing its ability to provide a complete furniture solution for the contemporary workplace. This meant that FUTURE designs had to provide a scheme that would not only show case Bisley’s portfolio of first class workplace solutions but also provide the very best in workplace lighting designs, promoting wellness and comfort for Bisley’s employees. In line with the wellness standard all luminaires are supplied with tuneable white LED’s offering colour change from 2700 Kelvin (warm white) up to 6000 Kelvin (cool white) thus allowing Bisley to vary the colour temperature to suit their needs throughout the working day as well as altering the look and feel during presentations and social events. Within the main area of the showroom striking light scenes were originated via FUTURE designs VANE luminaire creating slices of light that dart across the ceiling.

The versatility of VANE enhanced the space adding a visually engaging appearance, with the feature lighting arranged as a rectangle, L shape and cross section. High grade extruded aluminium housing gives added flexibility to VANE as it allowed for tailor made lengths and seamless joins manufactured specifically for the space. Advances in LED lighting technologies mean enhanced user comfort and performance. It has long been recognised that lighting affects mood, and since the recognition of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), it has become an important design factor. During winter months sufferers can experience depression due to the reduced amount of natural daylight, the symptoms of which can be reduced with artificial lighting
Large round suspended POD pendants were fitted into breakout zones creating an eye-catching element and easily defining the areas. This statement centrepiece luminaire is designed with an aluminium shell and incorporates an LED system, which gives a homogeneous flood of light to the front face. COPPA a bespoke lighting system from FUTURE designs was an integral design element of the boardroom creating a luxurious and dynamic space. Copper was traditionally used for lighting fabrications in bygone years due to its durability, corrosion resistance, prestigious appearance and ability to form complex shapes. The renaissance of copper in interiors design led to FUTURE designs creating COPPA a unique system which embraces the beauty of the past whilst incorporating the latest in LED technology. COPPA has a highly polished and powder coated finish with a clear lacquer to maintain the appearance. To achieve the soft illuminance required from the LED light source, etched glass discs were produced and installed within the COPPA spotlight assemblies.

Fluidity, flexibility and functionality Ian Drinkwater, Managing Director of Applelec, explores how the latest generation of OLED lighting technology is pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved by interior designers. Interior lighting has come a long way since the advent of the fluorescent tube. Links between lighting and perception of a visual space are well established, while the use of colour has been shown to have a profound effect on our emotional responses. The latest technological developments are pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in terms of both creativity and efficiency.
One such innovation is Organic Light Emitting Diodes, or OLED. While it is widely used in televisions and portable tech such as phones and tablets, it is also emerging as a choice for lighting designers wanting to create a stunning effect without eyewateringly large energy bills. Slimmer than regular LED products – OLEDs have no backlight – it’s a technology that is versatile and virtually glare-free, offering a plethora of possibilities. The modules emit a soft light akin to natural daylight, creating a relaxing, cosy atmosphere. Natural style lighting is preferable to more obviously man-made versions as it shows off colours better and can make a room appear
Applelec supplied OLED modules for one such installation, The Ribbon, which was showcased recently at the London Design Festival. The shape emulates a flowing ribbon, celebrating the flexibility and fluidity of OLED. Created by lighting artist Min Sang Cho, The Ribbon was 3D printed in its basic form and then delicately shaped and finished by hand, with 24-carat gold leaf applied to each piece to heighten the light reflection from the OLED modules. The stunning centrepiece now resides in the VIP reception area of the Genting Highland Casino in Malaysia. The sculpture is extremely energy efficient with remarkably low power consumption, using a mere 9W per unit. This is largely thanks to the fact that OLEDs have no backlight. Unlike regular LEDs, an OLED doesn’t just block the pixel shutter, but turns it off entirely, meaning it consumes no power when switched off. Luxury Interiors Magazine - 33

NEW HEAD FOR DFS Ian Filby, DFS ceo is to step down on 31 October. He will be succeeded by Tim Stacey, DFS group coo. Filby, who has been in the role for eight years, will then become the part-time chairman of Sofology for a year, overseeing its integration. Stacey joined DFS from Alliance Boots in 2011, where he was multi-channel director responsible for Boots.com. He became coo in 2015 and has been responsible for leading the omnichannel transformation of the business, developing the leadership capability across the retail organisation, and
leading the strategy and implementation of the property and supply chain transformation. WORLD FAMOUS WALLPAPER DESIGNER MARTHE ARMITAGE COMMISSIONED TO TRANSFORM THE ENVIRONMENT FOR PATIENTS AT WEST MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Renowned artist Marthe Armitage was recently commissioned by hospital charity CW+ to install her intricate, signature wallpaper designs in the Cardiac Care Unit and older patients wards at West Middlesex University Hospital, to transform the environment for patients and their families.
Marthe has been designing hand-printed wallpaper for over 50 years and is local to the hospital. She is a member and past Master of the Art Workers’ Guild, of which the iconic William Morris was himself in 1892. Now in her 80’s, Marthe continues to be as creative and innovative as ever.
Marthe Armitage produces hand-printed wallpapers using the traditional technique of lino block printing, from her studio in Chiswick. A variety of her iconic and distinctive designs have been digitally printed using the latest technology onto vinyl which is a suitable material for the hospital environment. The designs were selected following a consultation process by CW+ with patients and staff.
She says: “I was very pleased to be involved in
this project. I have not worked in a hospital before, so it’s lovely to see my designs in a new and different environment. I hope my wallpaper will help to calm patients by giving them something to really look at. I find it you really look at something, it can help to take your mind off yourself – which I hope will help these patients feel a bit more relaxed.”
Trystan Hawkins, Director of Patient Environment at CW+ commented: “We are delighted to have installed Marthe’s beautifully designed wallpaper in our hospital. Her designs are inspired by the natural world, which research shows can really help calm and distract patients when used in a clinical setting.” The new wallpaper has been warmly received by patients, visitors and staff. Dr Sadia Khan, Consultant Cardiologist, said: “Marthe’s wallpaper has transformed our unit and we have had so many patients and visitors comment on how beautiful it is. Patients in the cardiac unit are often waiting to have heart tests, which can be understandably be a worrying time, so creating a calm and tranquil environment is really important.”
