Born in Montreal, Barbara Stutman studied Fine Arts and Art History at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Saidye Bronfman Center and Concordia University. Although her paintings were included in several Canadian juried exhibitions, her love of jewellery led her to begin to study metalworking. The idea that she could design and make the pieces she wanted to wear proved irresistable and she has devoted herself to jewellery ever since, continuing her education with a variety of teachers both in Canada and in the United States. Early in her career her focus changed from creating jewellery designed specifically for adornment to more challenging pieces created to stimulate the mind as well as the eye. This development unfolded hand-in-hand with her decision to specialize in working metal wire using textile techniques such as weaving, knitting and crocheting. Stutman’s jewellery has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia and has been written about in newspapers, professional journals, catalogues and books. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Koch Ring Collection in Switzerland and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

EMPTY-BEZEL SERIES After making ‘stones’ surrounded by ‘bezels’ in my Royal Series work, I decided to make some pieces with ‘bezels’ but without the ‘stones’.

The work in my Royal Series is inspired by the aesthetics, the workmanship, the scale and the sheer extravagance of Indian royal jewellery; at the same time, it is in no way responsible for exacting the environmental or human tolls associated with the mining of gold, platinum or precious gemstones.
