Roland Dubuc finds his inspiration in everyday objects and in a phrase borrowed from Stravinski, which has become his leitmotif. “Inspiration consists in getting to work” His artistic process is reflected as much in his drawings and paper models as his actual jewelry made of gold and silver.
“I approach my creative work by seeking balance between a piece of material that is transformed, and the aesthetics of the finished product. Cut from a single piece of raw material, my jewelry combines fluid form and precise detail. The challenge lies in continually pushing the limits of a simple technique by creating complex, sculptural pieces. I proceed instinctively twisting, folding, knotting and refolding the metal as abstract forms emerge. My work can be described as a play on form. I make delicate objects shaped with decisive saw cuts and a wink and a nod to what is considered jewelry.”

Roland Dubuc was born in Montreal and discovered jewelry making in 1975, when he was offered a job as an apprentice jeweler, right after he completed his studies in fine arts. He rapidly acquired the technical skills involved in this work, and continued in the field for eighteen years. He began his first experiments folding metal in 1993. At the time, he didn’t intend to create jewelry. He simply enjoyed folding the material into what became increasingly complex forms as his technique developed. Later that year, he produced his first collection of jewelry. His works, all sculpted from a single piece of metal, were shown at the Salon des métiers d’art du Québec in Montreal. The innovative aspect of his technique did not go unnoticed and he received the Jean-Cartier Prize the same year, an award given to an outstanding new artist. In 1998, at the same show, he won the Jean-Marie Gauvreau Prize for the originality, creativity and quality of his work. From the time that Roland Dubuc began creating jewelry, he has sculpted all of his works from a single sheet of gold or silver. His unique technique can be likened to origami and demands great technical precision. First he does drawings, then he makes paper models or he proceeds directly on metal shaping a model for the final work. Roland Dubuc shapes his pieces using his intuition. Inspired by human inventiveness, he is especially interested in sculpture, architecture and constructions of all kinds. His aim is to constantly push the boundaries of his technique. He received a Research and Creation Grant in 2010 from The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for his current project, experimenting with metal thicknesses. Roland Dubuc’s collections are available in very limited editions at his studio/boutique in Montreal or during exhibitions in Canada and the U.S.
