Collins Group Realty, along with the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund, held their Annual Toy Drive on December 8th to benefit Bluffton Self Help (BSH). Volunteers distributed flyers and donation bags door to door and picked up toys with the Collins Group Realty Community Vehicle collecting more than 1,200 donations. Toys were sorted by BSH volunteers and the building was transformed into a North Pole toy shop where parents in need could come shop for gifts for their children.

avid and Susan first visited Napa Valley shortly after they were married more than 45 years ago. Having spent much of their lives in the
Chicago area, the region’s lush and abundant flora, commanding mountains and dry Mediterranean-like climate captivated the Midwest couple; evoking a sense of memory reminiscent of their favorite places in Pennsylvania where they grew up. To the Sabins, Napa felt like home, and the two knew they would be back. “The chance to leave the winter climate of the Midwest and see the arrival of spring in February was a tremendous calling card,” David said. Their vision became reality in 2002 when they acquired a scenic property along the foothills of the Mayacamas in St. Helena that has long had a tradition of growing grapes, dating as far back as the late 1870s. Having once been the site of an old Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, their historic estate still features remnants of aged redwood grape stakes and the cross members of trellises dug out before prohibition times. Rather than replanting Sauvignon Blanc, the Sabins opted to grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. These two are popularly cultivated varieties in Napa due to the region’s red volcanic soils with a rich iron content.

About the Winemaker Alejandro Alfaro has been working in the wine industry for more than 25 years. He was once named among “Napa’s Winemakers to Watch” by Wine Enthusiast and possesses unparalleled expertise in nearly all facets of the business, with experience ranging from vineyard management and wine production to operations and retail sales. In ’93, Alejandro moved from Mexico to the U.S. with aspirations of becoming a vintner. He had spent years working alongside his dad on his family’s farm and hoped to apply his agricultural knowledge to making wine. He got his start at The Hess Collection Winery, followed by concurrent cellar master positions at Bell Wine Cellars, Quail Ridge Winery and Quail Creek Winery; where he devoted years to achieving an in-depth understanding of the art of vinification. “Wine is a living thing, it is constantly changing,” Alejandro explained. “We interpret the change through our senses, following with a reaction. Sometimes you have to act quickly, but sometimes you have to be patient. Patience is achieved only when you are able to see the whole picture. This, I believe, is the art of winemaking.” He was brought on by renowned winemaker David DeSante to assist him in working with several boutique wineries throughout the Napa region, including Quixote, Tierra Roja, Oakville Terraces and David’s own DeSante Wines. In 2008, Alejandro assumed the role of winemaker for the Sabina Vineyards Pinot Noir Program while also working with David DeSante in the Cabernet Program. Two years later, he was given the title of head winemaker; simultaneously holding winemaker positions at Teachworth Winery and Rutherford Grove Winery. “Currently, I keep busy making wines for Sabina Vineyards, Cabell Estate, The Maker and my own, Catrin Wines,” Alejandro said. At Sabina Vineyards, he personally oversees vineyard management and performs hundreds of small tasks throughout the winemaking process. “At seven in the morning I start with a short walk through the vineyards,” he began to illustrate. “I then sanitize the tools needed for the day’s project and taste the wines I will be working with, making adjustments to the plan based on my sensory analysis. Each of these and many other small tasks are equally noticeable and important to the final product.” Having worked with many, Alejandro appreciates the intimate qualities the small family-owned winery has to offer. “The amount of trust invested in me at Sabina Vineyards makes me feel like a part of the family, with this comes great responsibility.”

David and Susan have a reverence for their land and a deep respect for the natural world. Their own vineyard is farmed organically, and because of its size and proximity, they can more selectively choose when to harvest individual blocks or rows that have reached physiological maturity. This approach is a crucial one because the ripeness of the grapes at harvesting plays a large role in the flavor, aroma and alcohol content of the wine; and certain areas of their estate receive more shade from the nearby forest. As the owner, David’s responsibilities vary greatly throughout the year. “Each day is different depending on the season, but our typical day starts with us waking up and looking out at the beautiful hillsides of Napa from our hilltop vineyard,” he said. “Sometimes I enjoy the rainy season the most as it is a time to relax and appreciate how lucky we are.
