The reflective quality of glass, together with superb lighting, creates a magical atmosphere in my bathing space. The Starlet bath by Bette has been inset into a milkglass surround, which ties in with the adjacent glass shower enclosure. I have used KH2 taps from my own range for Waterfront Bathrooms. They are mounted on a floating wall of marble, with lighting behind that defines the space and lights the area beautifully.

The bathroom is the only room in the house where you can lock the door and claim the Space as your own. The privacy in itself is a luxury. The bathrooms I design for my clients are all bespoke and are based on the Japanese bathing custom: the ceremony of cleansing, followed by relaxation in a hot tub.

he first step in bathroom design is to decide how many you need and where to site them. Actual space for bathrooms is usually taken from other rooms. A whole section of a master bedroom may be given over to a wet room or bathroom, although mostly an adjoining room is turned into a bathroom, with a shower, bath, basins and loo, perhaps with an interconnecting dressing room or space for a massage slab. You might be able to accommodate a shower room and separate loo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is often the configuration that men prefer, whereas women tend to favour big bathrooms with two sinks and good storage. Once you have defined your requirements, it is relatively easy to design a bathroom if you use the grid, to see the potential of your space and workout what goes where. Taking a line from the door across The floor and up to the basin is always a successful Option, as is a banner that draws your eye through the space from the window to the bath or shower. I favour bathing over showering, so my own bathrooms always have the bath at the centre of the design. Bathrooms are expensive, and invariably a large chunk of the budget will be taken up with the plumbing: The constant flow of hot water; the right pressure for the shower. This requires professional help, as often a house will need some new plumbing and changes to water systems in order to function to a high standard. CHESHIRE LUXURY

FOUR VIEWS of my own bathroom (see previous page for first) show how the room works as a whole. The grid line from the bath across the floor to the basin was taken in the form of a blackened oak banner set into taupecoloured milk glass, as this centred the room and gave the bath prime importance. The grid lines are further in play in the way the cupboards flank the mirror and basin. The washstand and mirror, glass bath surround and shower enclosure are all bespoke, and the backlit floating marble wall behind the bath was also specially made to my design. All the taps and the black shutters are from my ranges, and the White Bishop side table is by India Mahdavi. the lighting scheme was designed by Robert Clift and me. In addition to the backlit wall behind the bath, there is more concealed lighting behind the loo and basin, again giving a soft, flattering light. Pre-set controls have been programmed to give several instant settings at the touch of a button. This bathroom illustrates just how the symmetry of line and mix of wood and glass textures create a luxurious and timeless statement that is very much my signature.

The elements that make up a bathroom – the taps, sinks, bath, joinery, materials and finishes – give the space its personality. Sublime comfort is the aim, as this is the only room in the house where you can shut the door and look after yourself. MATERIALS and their various tones and textures play a key role in creating the overall look of a bathroom and giving the space its point of interest. in this bathroom the hero material is the wonderful grey-veined Arabescato Stone, which has been used on the floor and two walls. Its lively texture has been balanced by the soft grey plasterwork on two of the walls and the pared-down ebonized joinery and streamlined shelves. The use of mirror on the cabinet, together with a selection of glass accessories and vases, provides a reflective lift. THE FLOW of marble continues into the shower room and is in beautiful contrast to the polished plaster wall. I often design the up-stand skirtings to match the floors, as i have in this case, as this continues the flow of line.

LIGHTING must be well planned and flexible, to allow for different light levels and moods. Task light for shaving and making up has been integrated into the mirrored cabinets, as this gives the right kind of light to see properly, while still being soft on the face. There are also directional spotlights on a pre-set control panel, and the joinery has lowlevel lights that are set to glow at night. The niche in the wall by the bath provides a convenient spot for candles, for a relaxing bathing experience. STORAGE is essential to bathroom design, as there is so much kit and therefore potentially so much mess. Have on display only what you really want to see, and keep the rest hidden away. FITTINGS are available in a vast choice of shapes and styles for all budgets.

Research your options thoroughly at specialist bathroom suppliers, to find the right bath, basins, loo, bidet, showers and taps to suit your needs. The bath should be the most comfortable and shapely you can find. installing two sinks makes the morning rush much less stressful, and the sink unit can incorporate allessential storage. Here the simplest of round sinks and bathtub balance the lines of the room. TAPS are sculptural art pieces and come in all styles, from the simplest of squared-off designs to elongated ceilingtobasin versions – these are from my range for Waterfront Bathrooms. A TELEVISION can be set into the bathside wall (opposite), a luxury that is increasingly requested – in the same way integrated music in every room is now a standard ask.

While thinking about your hard surface materials, work with the grid so that you can make the most of the space and create the ‘lines’ of the room, perhaps with a banner in a contrasting material that runs across the floor and up the wall. next choose the fittings, bearing in mind the textural contrast and subsequent spirit of the room. avoid overhead lights that will shine unflatteringly onto the top of your head – my advice is always to work with a lighting consultant.

BATHROOM CHECKLIST At the planning stage, make a decision on whether to bring music and/or television into the bathroom. Take the advice of your contractor and structural engineer about water flow rates, bath sizes, weight loads and tanking (waterproofing). Baths, basins and taps are the room’s accessories, so choose carefully. The lighting design should incorporate three circuits: one for main directional light, one for task lighting at the basin, and the third for soft backlighting and low-level lights. The final touches are as important here as in any other room, so where space permits have an inviting seat.

To the Manor born... When award-winning designer Emma Sims-Hilditch was approached by her client to transform a spectacular Grade II Cotswold Manor House into a comfortable and convivial family home, she jumped at the chance. When her client mentioned she had 8 children and the house was a homage to orange wood paneling and oil paint effects, Emma realised the project was going to be less than straightforward.

he brief was relatively simple. Turn a dark and gloomy Jacobean house into a modern weekend home for a city family. The reality was a little more complex. The property had not been touched since the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s and the dark stairwell at the centre of the house made the interior feel oppressive and gloomy. With a family of 10 to cater for, the kitchen, utility areas and living spaces needed to open up to accommodate the new brood, whilst the house also needed to offer visiting friends and family a place to stay on the weekend; and a place to party. Emma was asked to take on the role of interior architect & designer to lead the refurbishment project. As an expert in the restoration CHESHIRE LUXURY

of historic buildings, Emma’s reputation for sympathetically balancing authentic architectural details with modern detailing preceded her. “Classic contemporary country house style” is how Emma describes the finished look. Her ability to enhance the character and location of the property whilst bringing it into the 21st century has meant that Foscote Manor now retains the patina of its past whilst offering its new owners a stylish, comfortable modern home. Emma’s first hurdle was to persuade her Clients to paint over the paneling and oil based paint effects that covered the hallway and sitting room walls. The dark orange boards and moody gloss effects only served to create a gloomy, manorial atmosphere. It was a bold decision, but the effect was stunning. By keeping the original features and updating them with clean, crisp colours and a large roof lantern, the browns and oranges were replaced with calming blues and natural light that brightened the entrance way and main living areas. By painting the panels as well as the architectural joinery, such as the door mouldings, balustrades and door leaves, the whole space became lighter and felt more expansive. Transforming a Manor House into a modern family home meant more than just brightening the place up. The Clients looked to Emma to help them re-design the space to fit life in the

country: a large family room with the latest AV technology and comfortable seating, a boot room with plenty of hanging space and room for 10 pairs of wellies, storage in all the bedrooms and bathrooms and a large laundry room with 2 washing machines and 2 dryers, were all on the essential list. Throughout all these rooms Emma injected an informal, relaxed colour palette mixed with a combination of linens and wools for a more natural, earthy feel. Linen curtains by Mark Alexander created a neutral backdrop to the relaxed drawing room, whilst shutters in the laundry room and lighting from Original BTC introduced a crisp, industrial design to the utility areas. With 8 children and 7 bedrooms to decorate, Emma needed to create a harmonious range of versatile and comfortable living spaces that would cater for different age ranges, visiting family, and friends for sleepovers. The beautiful wallpapers from Swedish company Sandberg, introduced some primary colour, pattern and texture to the rooms complemented by the upholstered French beds in pretty floral fabrics from Emma’s own range. Luckily the master bathroom had unusually generous proportions, making it ideal for the inevitable flow of traffic from such a large family. Unluckily the bathroom was clad in brown marble and acres of tiles that made it feel CHESHIRE LUXURY

dark and lifeless. Emma started by introducing paneling instead of stone to match the moulding found elsewhere in the house. A natural colour palette of off-white tones by Neptune were chosen to blend with the bedroom and dressing room suite, and then swathes of curtains in soft linen, a natural oak floor and a small amount of Carrara marble for just the right amount of luxury. “Often large bathrooms can look stark and lifeless, particularly when using modern, angular products,” says Emma. “But here classic fittings and a tonal palette create a dreamy feel and lots of character”. With all the work going on in the rest of the house, the family was happy to make do with the perfectly serviceable kitchen and had no plans to update it. However, “the kitchen worried me from the start” explains Emma, “it seemed so small and it was out on a limb. It didn’t connect to anywhere.” However it was only after Emma had worked on the project for a year and Noreen had seen the metamorphosis of the rest of the house that she agreed to the kitchen overhaul. “It is such an important space,” says Emma, “and you should never underestimate what a well designed kitchen can do to a house.” The original space consisted of two small rooms, with a load-bearing wall in the middle, low ceilings, four lead-light windows and three doorways to contend with. “It was clear from 62

the start that, with the shape of the room and not much wall space, the only way the kitchen was going to work was to have a multi-purpose island.â&#x20AC;? This clever design solution acts a natural barrier between the cooking and eating areas and incorporates 10 bar stools, 2 dishwashers, 2 bins a gas hob, wide pan drawers and large storage cupboards. The cabinetry from the

Suffolk Range by Neptune offered great quality and value for money whilst the 2 stainless steel Sub-Zero fridges at the far end of the kitchen injected a sleek finish to the soft palette in the rest of the room. The result typifies Emmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approach to the whole refurbishment. Each interior space is layered with an artful balance of classic designs,

impeccable lighting and a muted colour palette. The overall effect is one of easygoing grace. The overall feeling is one of comfort and character: which is the perfect combination for a modern city family living in such an historic country setting. LOUIS XV Revisited This residence suggests the layered and faded appearance of the vivid colors popular in 18th century french homes. Pigmented sheetrock mud in this french blue entrance fades into the nearby creams used in the rest of the home. By leaving small, irregular gaps when applying two shades of custom-tinted blue gray over cream and terracotta hues, the surfaces give the effect that layers of centuries-old walls have been chipped away, exposing the paint of the past. 86

This hallway leading to the master suite contains wonderful treasures from france. By applying the pattern on the ceiling in a watercolor fashion, the paint treatment suggests the same time period as the surrounding antiques.

The antique rug inspired this bedroomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s color choices. Applying a panel design with insets of a floral pattern creates a soft effect featuring the antique French wainscoting. A barely-there raw umber stain over the soft blue coved ceiling complements the tones in the rug and artwork. Seeking harmony between the bedroom and nearby sitting room, a faded stripe individualizes the two spaces while the uniform ceiling treatment lends consistency between the rooms. Drawing color cues from existing furnishings, various applications in color treatment add interest.
