EDITORS NOTES Winter is upon us, the clocks have been wound back, the heating is on and the wood burners are being lit. It’s time to relish those cosy evenings in with family and friends. Yes, the Summer is just a distant memory now, but what a fantastic Summer we had! Somehow it feels better heading into the colder and darker months having enjoyed such a wonderfully warm and pleasant Summertime. In this issue we hope that you will find inspiration from the fantastic Kelly Hoppen, I’m sure you’ll enjoy her imaginative designs, natural forms and edges as much as we do. We’re also very pleased to feature a beautifully designed Knightsbridge apartment by Sims-Hilditch and we also feature some slick bathroom designs for less able people brought to you by Chester Bathroom and Wetrooms. Decadence What do you do when your long standing client of 15 years approaches you to renovate their chic Knightsbridge apartment in just 12 weeks? In the case of interior designer, Emma Sims-Hilditch, it resulted in a spectacular interior that not only fulfilled the brief of creating a comfortable refuge by day, but also an entertaining and glamorous space by night.

mma’s relationship with h er client went back over a decade “Having already worked on a few of his family’s properties, including their country estate, they approached me to do this Knightsbridge apartment.” Emma recognised immediately their need for a tranquil haven from busy city life, that was also in complete contrast to their country lifestyle. “They wanted an incredibly glamorous but understated look, with comfort a key aspect. The flat was to be a London base for the family and also for entertaining.” Structural changes to the spacious third floor, three bedroomed apartment on Lowndes Square were already being carried out by Peek Architecture. Emma worked closely with them to ensure every detail was considered on a practical and aesthetic level to create the overall effect of absolute luxury. From the highest quality fitted joinery to the commissioning of oak, glass and stainless steel finishes, every detail was carefully considered. Emma initially presented her ideas on mood boards and 3D drawings so the client could visualise the end result. They loved it, 8

only changing one item which was the interior hallway light. Instead, Emma commissioned a stunning chandelier to create a more dramatic focal point, and to complement the light above the dining table. To create the opulent feeling that would translate perfectly from relaxed family time to sophisticated entertaining, Emma introduced a wealth of rich fabric textures including velvets, silks, wools and linens. Where colour is often used to entice the senses, Emma let textures take the lead. Cushions in Mulberry Home’s ‘Magic Circles Velvet’ create a tactile accent when placed on a chair upholstered in ‘Razzle Dazzle’ by Threads at GP& J Baker. The attention to detail was no more apparent than when the flat took on its night-time allure. The Evitavonni Chairs include a tiny silver thread running through the fabric that is unnoticeable in the day but beautifully iridescent at night. This play on reflective light is one of the signature looks of the overall scheme. Emma’s natural empathy for space, light and proportion are put to great use through the design of
crystal chandeliers from Phillips and Wood and wall lights by Porta Romana, which add a sophisticated sparkle that perfectly transforms the apartment from a gentle relaxed setting to one of night time drama. Further use of bespoke furniture designs, wall paper in soft colours and a sublime silk carpet added to the elegant finish. Emma added that “the carpet in the bedroom is particularly special. It’s pure silk from Stark Carpet and the client loved it so much we used it in the three bedrooms, inlaying it into the oak floor to give it greater visual impact. It’s the nicest thing I have ever walked on!” Working closely with the architects gave Emma the opportunity to harness every detail of the interior fit to ensure it met her clients’ expectations. All the joinery was given special consideration from the door furniture to the stunning fittings that were flown in from SA Baxter from the States.

Although the soft furnishings helped to convey the sense of luxury her clients wanted, the contemporary spray lacquered kitchen helped to finish the look of cool sophistication. Fitted out with the latest Gaggenau appliances the kitchen is a masterclass in combining the shock of the new with the patina of the past. Emma includes a stunning Carrera marble floor in the kitchen and master bathroom, which acts as a stylish backdrop to the crisp modern cabinetry and sleek bathroom fittings. The final finishing touch was the careful curation of artwork and accessories that bring a sense of place and character to the scheme. Large scale and interior books from the RIBA Bookshop, elegant coffee tables from JVB furniture and the distinctive use of contemporary prints, led by her clients passion for photography. The ‘floating drive-in’ by Tim Walker appropriately adorns the main wall of the Cinema room. Somewhere Emma was probably keen to relax in after completing such a stunning scheme in such a short space of time.

How you Begin A good beginning starts with a focused mind, and there is no better design practice than that of laying out mood boards to get your vision under way. Seeing your influences pinned t o the boards will increase your confidence and skill. Raid fashion and interiors magazines for references – a chanel jacket can be as key an inspiration as a finished room. Put it all on the mood boards, one or more for each room, leave them for a day, then revisit them with a fresh eye. Do not file swatches and samples away – keep the boards on view, as this will move you ever closer to the right d esign d ecisions.
At work in my london studio, where I initiate every design by compiling many mood boards detailing every facet of every room.

I am known for my palette of neutrals – Black, white, cream, grey and taupe. These make the perfect backdrop for any scheme.
Subtlety and contrast of tone and texture are the keys to a successful monochromatic scheme where neither the black nor the white dominates and there is a natural balance between the two. Adding elements such as the bronze christian liaigre ajoure side table, the wroughtiron Mark BrazierJones sera lantern floor lamp and the zebra-skin rug brings highlighting focal points into the design.

Every one of us sees and responds to colour in our own way.
I
have always wholeheartedly enjoyed a monochromatic palette. To my eye, it embraces all the neutral tones between the opposite poles of black and white, plus the black and the white. This palette has an infinite range of blacks, charcoals, greys and whites, browns, taupes, sands and creams. It forms a limitless variety of neutrals that can be put to work with vibrant tones of burnt orange, luxurious purple, earthy green, glorious red and, sometimes, emperor’s yellow. Dwelling on this locks my mind on to the creation of vastly rich, exciting colourscapes that translate into wonder fully workable, comforting homes. Every one of us sees and responds to colour in our own way. When I am putting colour together, I always start with a natural linen fabric. Instinctively, I will know whether it is a taupe or a sand tone. If it is grey-brownbased, it belongs in the taupe family; if it is
yellow-cream-based, it hangs with the sand group. Brown is not just brown: it can be bitter chocolate or honeyed oatmeal. White can be blue- or umber-based. Just the slightest shift in tone can throw out the whole, or give me the beauty i seek. I never mix the taupes and the sands together in a scheme. A taupe linen next to a sand linen will look dull. Taupe goes with white, while sand goes with cream. Taupe is happiest with nickel and other silvers, while sand is in harmony with bronzes and golds. That does not mean that bronze and taupe cannot be mixed, nor does it mean that sand will not work with silver. Metallics and reflective materials can be moved between the families of taupe and sand. Trust your instincts and go with what is beautiful, harmonious and exciting to you, and mix a signature palette to create a personal colourscape vision.
IN NEUTRAL I cannot separate colour from texture: a natural linen in a sleek, glazed finish will look entirely different to a wide, chunky-weave linen in the same colour. Black, charcoal, dove grey and silver are as invaluable to me as white, cream, sand and gold, but I am careful to never mix taupe tones with those of sand, as the two are incompatible.

MONOCHROME PALETTE I liken the success of a monochromatic palette to that of black-and-white photography, where the serenity of an interior scheme lies in the subtlety and contrast of tone and textural combinations.
MONOCHROME LOVES… A RANGE OF BLACKS, from purest ebony to charcoal, mixed with whites that can have undertones of grey or taupe. REFLECTIVE SURFACES such as glossy lacquer or silky polished plaster. CONTRASTING TEXTURES that are surprising and enlivening within the space – such as the combination of linen, lace and velvet shown here. CRYSTAL LIGHTS for reflection and feng shui.

BLACK-STAINED WooD – flooring or joinery. GLASS – clear, as well as dramatic accents of green, purple or red. SILVER or NICKEL finishes. STONE MATERIALS that have grey or mocha undertones, such as slate and grey limestone. A TEXTURAL MIx in the same taupe tone.
TAUPE HATES … BUTTERY YELLOW TONES in any material, hard or soft. GOLDEN WOODS, such as oak. TAN LEATHER, as it contains too much yellow.
THIS MOOD BOARD (above) has been translated into the reality of my bedroom in London (above). Every tonal colour and material texture, from the crushed white silk velvet to the silvery shag-pile carpet, is included on the board. 34

SANDY-COLOURED STONES – for flooring or walls. DARK CREAM CERAMICS or any accessories that contain any hint of yellow.
TAUPE RULES ou can create wonderful interiors using taupe-only materials, as long as you have suffiY cient texture and contrast between the different elements – mix the rough with the smooth, matt with gloss, opaque with sheer. A dash of the perfect accent colour will enliven the whole. Taupe loves clear glass – it is like sun breaking through clouds.
PERFECT ACCENTS FOR TAUPE Taupe is the perfect foil for rich, deep tones such as mulberry red, purple, burnt orange and chocolate brown – colours that can be injected into a scheme to lift the palette and delight the eye. Taupe is also as happy with bronze as with nickel and chrome, and always enjoys a pure white accent.

THE COMBINATION OF SUEDE AND LEATHER in this sand scheme (right) is in perfect pitch with the textures of the white blinds and the cream shaggy carpet. The natural white and cream tones in the petrified wood blocks bring in another form of texture that is beautifully peaceful in this woodlined living space. It is easy to see in the mood board (left) how this particular yellow brings in just the right amount of light-handed contrast. The quinn sofa by Meridiani is covered in linen, and the IPE Cavalli opium ottomans are upholstered in soft suede. hy? Because a bathroom designed with less able people in mind needs to avoid “difference.” And any differences that there have to be should be subtle - it does not have to look like a hospital. The key lies in the detail because if the designer is to fully reflect the wishes of disabled people he must take account of their special requirements and at the same time recognise their desire to maintain the maximum possible independence. They need to be able to enjoy the same range of facilities that we all expect from today’s modern bathroom. For example, walk showers continue to grow in popularity among all homeowners and are the perfect replacement for a bath or conventional shower tray and enclosure. In most cases a walk in wetroom can be fitted to ensure there is no step up making access aided by walking sticks or by wheel chair easy. Amarita Vargas is a visual artist capturing the essence of energy and flow in her abstract works. Strongly influenced by her career as a flamenco dancer, Amarita pares movement down to a minimal statement using a restricted palette of tones.
