Back to the

Old School A Sims Hilditch project

When Emma and John Sims Hilditch first stumbled across a row of old farm cottages in a pretty village in Wiltshire they knew they had discovered a hidden gem. The three derelict homes with small barn attached, dated back to 1790 and had originally housed the village school; but years of neglect had left the properties needing a complete restoration.

“the wonderful quality of light”

T

he first step into breathing new life into these Grade II listed cottages was to apply for permission to open up the space to give them an open plan living area to suit their young family. The challenge was in sympathetically re-organising the property whilst maintaining much of the character of the old buildings. The result was an elegant three-bedroom home that comfortably accommodated Emma and John’s family for over 15 years. However in 2010, with a husband and three children, an award winning interior design practice and two cats all squeezed in, Emma decided the time had come to convert the barn to create an open plan living space to properly cater for their extended brood. The conventional route would have been to create two stories throughout. Instead, Emma designed a

mezzanine level and stunning full height sitting room that dramatically opened up the space and created a sense of theatre, light and space. The huge glazed barn doors, rendered limestone fireplace and fitted bookcases with a ladder for access, all create a spectacular setting, which is cleverly offset by the informal layout of the kitchen area. Emma felt that “what makes this house a home is the balance between the space that lets everyone do their own thing and the cosy areas around the woodburners.” To create the dramatic full height effect whilst 10

maximising the accommodation Emma raised the roof to its original height and organised the interior so that she could introduce a mezzanine level with a new upper storey for a bedroom and bathroom above the kitchen and dining areas. An elegant dining room helped sympathetically link the two structures, whilst the introduction of a beamed roof, exposed stone walls, and floor to ceiling doors, helped to preserve the character of the barn, whilst introducing the crisp, contemporary feel of the present. To ensure the building retained its sense of the past, Emma used plenty of local vernacular materials, such as Cotswold reclaimed stone that helped retain its historical roots. A less expensive, but just as effective design trick, was her clever use of new wood, which was given a limed effect by colour washing with thinned paint. Used as timber boarding on the kitchen and dining room ceilings, it gave the impression the building had been that way for generations. Emma uses layering as a practical, functional and effective technique throughout the conversion. The different finishes she introduces such as fabric walls, timber boarding and rendered limestone, all bring a depth of colour, texture, light and character to the overall design. Combined with a play of scale with the full height sitting room, impressive fireplace (designed by John and Emma), and flanking large sofas and beautiful table lamps, the feeling of space and size is energising and enthralling. When combined with the warm, cosy winter sitting room and atmospheric dark hallway, you have an intriguing and engaging space that keeps on surprising. Her design of the elegant new bedroom and bathroom on the upper storey employs the same technique to beautiful effect. The open rafters create a sense of drama, which is complemented by the modern four-poster bed and large floor to partition-height mirror. The light pours in from the bathroom and surrounding open eaves. Emma’s inspiration for this new addition came from “the wonderful quality of light” that floods the top floor conversion. The freestanding bath, painted in a stylish Moss by Neptune has been COTSWOLD LUXURY

placed between two bedroom windows so they can enjoy the expansive view while bathing. The palette throughout the house is soft and restful, whilst feeling fresh and modern. The use of a soft wool plaid fabric for the curtains by British design company, Mulberry Home combined with the cushions by De La Cuona add elegance and warmth. Much of the beautiful interior furniture and accessories, including their stunning Chichester Kitchen and Sheldrake Dining Table are part of the sophisticated Neptune Collection, a stylish lifestyle brand run by husband John Sims-Hilditch. 12

Emma’s approach throughout the conversion is understated and elegant. The overall effect gives the subtle impression that it has been simply stripped back to the bare essentials. It’s a cleverly restrained use of colour, light and architectural detailing that adds drama and ease, glamour and comfort. Not an easy balance to satisfy so completely, but one Emma has done with great success.

Another creation we’re proud to reveal is the new ‘driftwood’ finish on our Urbo range – a beautiful, sea-washed oak. We like it mixed with the uber-cool polished concrete work surface on display in our Cheltenham studio. Texture plays a big part in the redesign of our Cheltenham showroom. Smooth stainless steel nestles up with rough-sawn oak, burnished silver gives depth to ice-white glass and industrial chic concrete and black walnut pally up with marble and high-gloss applewood. And of course Olive the beagle continues to be the most popular feature of all! Roundhouse offers an initial planning service free of charge. How you Begin A good beginning starts with a focused mind, and there is no better design practice than that of laying out mood boards to get your vision under way. Seeing your influences pinned t o the boards will increase your confidence and skill. Raid fashion and interiors magazines for references – a chanel jacket can be as key an inspiration as a finished room. Put it all on the mood boards, one or more for each room, leave them for a day, then revisit them with a fresh eye. Colour

by Kelly Hoppen

I am known for my palette of neutrals – Black, white, cream, grey and taupe. These make the perfect backdrop for any scheme.

Subtlety and contrast of tone and texture are the keys to a successful monochromatic scheme where neither the black nor the white dominates and there is a natural balance between the two. Adding elements such as the bronze christian liaigre ajoure side table, the wroughtiron Mark BrazierJones sera lantern floor lamp and the zebra-skin rug brings highlighting focal points into the design.

FEATURE | Colour

BLACK AND WHITE (below) have been used to give this staircase dramatic flair – the wide green band on the curtains balances the weight and depth of contrast.

Every one of us sees and responds to colour in our own way.

I

have always wholeheartedly enjoyed a monochromatic palette. To my eye, it embraces all the neutral tones between the opposite poles of black and white, plus the black and the white. This palette has an infinite range of blacks, charcoals, greys and whites, browns, taupes, sands and creams. It forms a limitless variety of neutrals that can be put to work with vibrant tones of burnt orange, luxurious purple, earthy green, glorious red and, sometimes, emperor’s yellow. Dwelling on this locks my mind on to the creation of vastly rich, exciting colourscapes that translate into wonder fully workable, comforting homes. Every one of us sees and responds to colour in our own way. When I am putting colour together, I always start with a natural linen fabric. Instinctively, I will know whether it is a taupe or a sand tone. If it is grey-brownbased, it belongs in the taupe family; if it is

yellow-cream-based, it hangs with the sand group. Brown is not just brown: it can be bitter chocolate or honeyed oatmeal. White can be blue- or umber-based. Just the slightest shift in tone can throw out the whole, or give me the beauty i seek. I never mix the taupes and the sands together in a scheme. A taupe linen next to a sand linen will look dull. Taupe goes with white, while sand goes with cream. Taupe is happiest with nickel and other silvers, while sand is in harmony with bronzes and golds. That does not mean that bronze and taupe cannot be mixed, nor does it mean that sand will not work with silver. Metallics and reflective materials can be moved between the families of taupe and sand. Trust your instincts and go with what is beautiful, harmonious and exciting to you, and mix a signature palette to create a personal colourscape vision.

IN NEUTRAL I cannot separate colour from texture: a natural linen in a sleek, glazed finish will look entirely different to a wide, chunky-weave linen in the same colour. Black, charcoal, dove grey and silver are as invaluable to me as white, cream, sand and gold, but I am careful to never mix taupe tones with those of sand, as the two are incompatible.

50

A RICH AND SENSUOUS IMPRESSION (left) is given by the combination of the black velvet cushions and the charcoal damask upholstery in conjunction with the lace banding on the white linen cushions. I particularly enjoy this part of the room, as the grouping is reinforced by the powerful photograph of a woman wearing a sexy lace dress – Jessica in Lace Dress, by Louise Bobbe.

MONOCHROME PALETTE I liken the success of a monochromatic palette to that of black-and-white photography, where the serenity of an interior scheme lies in the subtlety and contrast of tone and textural combinations.

MONOCHROME LOVES… A RANGE OF BLACKS, from purest ebony to charcoal, mixed with whites that can have undertones of grey or taupe. REFLECTIVE SURFACES such as glossy lacquer or silky polished plaster. CONTRASTING TEXTURES that are surprising and enlivening within the space – such as the combination of linen, lace and velvet shown here. CRYSTAL LIGHTS for reflection and feng shui.

MONOCHROME hates… NOTHING… as it goes with everything. COTSWOLD LUXURY

BLACK-STAINED WooD – flooring or joinery. GLASS – clear, as well as dramatic accents of green, purple or red. SILVER or NICKEL finishes. STONE MATERIALS that have grey or mocha undertones, such as slate and grey limestone. A TEXTURAL MIx in the same taupe tone.

TAUPE HATES … BUTTERY YELLOW TONES in any material, hard or soft. GOLDEN WOODS, such as oak. TAN LEATHER, as it contains too much yellow.

THIS MOOD BOARD (above) has been translated into the reality of my bedroom in London (above). Every tonal colour and material texture, from the crushed white silk velvet to the silvery shag-pile carpet, is included on the board. 52

COTSWOLD LUXURY

SANDY-COLOURED STONES – for flooring or walls. DARK CREAM CERAMICS or any accessories that contain any hint of yellow.

TAUPE RULES ou can create wonderful interiors using taupe-only materials, as long as you have suffiY cient texture and contrast between the different elements – mix the rough with the smooth, matt with gloss, opaque with sheer. A dash of the perfect accent colour will enliven the whole. Taupe loves clear glass – it is like sun breaking through clouds.

PERFECT ACCENTS FOR TAUPE Taupe is the perfect foil for rich, deep tones such as mulberry red, purple, burnt orange and chocolate brown – colours that can be injected into a scheme to lift the palette and delight the eye. Taupe is also as happy with bronze as with nickel and chrome, and always enjoys a pure white accent.

THE ACCENT OF RICH MULBERRY RED (right) in both the rough texture of the linen cushions and the smooth texture of the leather ottoman and carpet border lifts the taupe scheme of this living space. The mood board (above) illustrates the bones of the design, showing how it translates into the finished interior with furniture by Christian Liaigre.

FEATURE | Colour

A sand palette can be put to work with coffee, cream, toffee, rusts and the right kind of earthy, organic yellow.

SAND LOVES … THE CONTRAST of white and the easy warmth of cream.

SAND-BASED neutral linens and natural buttery suede. ALL TONES of caramel, coffee, toffee, rust, and a touch of orange or yellow. STONES that contain beige, such as French limestone. WARM METALS, such as verdigris, bronze, copper, gold and brass. MOTHER-OF-PEARL details. NATURAL HONEY-TONED oak flooring.

SAND PALETTE A sand palette is warm, earthy, comfortable and natural. Sand is a yellow-based colour and has an organic ricness of tone that works perfectly in country-style homes. Contemporary designs in sand palettes tend to have a whisper of traditional flair. 54

COTSWOLD LUXURY

SAND HATES … ANY TONE of taupe. ANY TYPE of wood with a pinkish base. TOO MUCH black. BLUE-BASED stones. METALS in black or copper tones.

THE COMBINATION OF SUEDE AND LEATHER in this sand scheme (right) is in perfect pitch with the textures of the white blinds and the cream shaggy carpet. The natural white and cream tones in the petrified wood blocks bring in another form of texture that is beautifully peaceful in this woodlined living space. It is easy to see in the mood board (left) how this particular yellow brings in just the right amount of light-handed contrast. The quinn sofa by Meridiani is covered in linen, and the IPE Cavalli opium ottomans are upholstered in soft suede. The curving leather Rosetta armchair and Pia hanging light above it are both from Promemoria.

Restoration... Very little has changed in the methods employed by Full brooks’ master craftsmen since the 1700’s.

This is something that sets us apart from companies who simply retail plaster architectural features and it is why we are commissioned by organisations that need optimum levels of authenticity, skill and tradition in the workmanship. We are trusted to deliver work that is as well executed as the original article and so we have worked on a wide range of projects from the restoration of Grade II Listed buildings such as Cheltenham College’s Thirlestaine House (pictured) and Bath’s Holburne Museum through to the re-instatement of opulence in many private homes that may have damaged or missing pieces. We work with architects, interior designers and private clients who expect a bespoke service and a discrete approach to working relationships. 64

Bespoke Bespoke interior features such as ornate ceilings, cornices and other decorative schemes can include enrichments that have been designed to suit your own creative requirements and personal tastes. Originally these features displayed an understanding and appreciation of quality and craftsmanship and in turn were a show of status. So why stick to tradition? With the introduction of modern materials, the medium of ornamental plaster has never been so versatile, so flexible or had so much potential for precision detail. Amarita Vargas is a visual artist capturing the essence of energy and flow in her abstract works. Strongly influenced by her career as a flamenco dancer, Amarita pares movement down to a minimal statement using a restricted palette of tones. Her paintings may be created in her studio in Oxfordshire or whilst travelling in Spain. She recently exhibited two canvases in the exhibition ‘Flamenco: Entre Lo Figurativo Y Lo Abstracto’ at the Museo del Baile Flamenco in Sevilla and her artist’s books are in the collection of the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Dancing Script

“ I don’t recall seeing anything that similar. I’m sure Picasso and others have made squiggles like these yet not perhaps with the same deliberate purpose” Rosie Miles National Art Library, V&A “ It is the placing of the sound in the space that is important - the resonance that a step has when it is surrounded by exactly the right amount of silence. In the same way the drawing needs this relationship. The stroke carves out space that holds the immediacy and vibrancy of the gesture. The real practice is in understanding this relationship of form to space and sound to silence.” Amarita 2013 Flame

FEATURE | A Cotswold gem

A Cotswold Gem Dormy House Hotel near Broadway has undergone a complete transformation by interior design house Todhunter Earle Interiors. The exciting new look has transformed the 17th century farmhouse, part of the family owned Farncombe Estate, into one of the finest small luxury hotels in the Cotswolds. The extensive renovations retain much of the hotel’s original charm – oak panelled beams, flagstone flooring, exposed Cotswold stone, roaring fires, earthy tones and traditional local materials – whilst creating a glamorous new look for the next chapter in the hotel’s story. Todhunter Earle has worked closely with Architect Tony D’ Alton, and introduces a mix of classical touches with contemporary designs combining old antiques with a new look of geometrics patterns, a mix of fabrics including velvets, suede, felts with rustic materials and earthy tones, a hint of retro and a touch of Scandinavian influence. Highlights include oneoff pieces and bespoke fabric designs by Emily Todhunter, which have been made exclusively for the hotel. Three sumptuous lounges (The Red, The Blue and The Yellow) set the scene to welcome guests into the Dormy’s ‘home from home’. The rooms combine wood burning stoves, rustic benches, a splash of colour and a mix of antique mirrors and 1950s-inspired lighting. The new bar and restaurant The Potting Shed will offer the perfect surroundings for a relaxed drink and meal for COTSWOLD LUXURY

up to 52 guests. It features a large rustic oak bar with leather and stud detailing designed specifically for the hotel, exposed timber flooring, antique mirrors and retro wall lighting. Internal courtyards will welcome guests through and the large main restaurant, The Garden Room, with seating for up to 80 covers and its own terrace, will ‘bring the garden inside’ as the ultimate country retreat. In addition, 23 of the 40 stunning en-suite bedrooms have been individually designed by Todhunter Earle. The Main House offers six newly-designed bedrooms with a charming, traditional feel - hand painted wallpaper, natural fabrics and linens - and all feature large en-suite bathrooms. The Emily Wing offers five additional rooms, newly-built in 1950s style and with a hint of Danish influence. For those preferring a more contemporary look, the tongue-in-cheek named Attic and Loft Suites offer a separate wing with their own entrances. Five other rooms have been all designed with a ‘New England’ feel - think big geometric patterns and bold contrasting colours,

with lacquered furniture and pale flooring. The New Spa Rooms will offer calm, spa-like décor, whilst the intimate Rose Cottage has more traditional, floral interiors. Additional rooms in the Danish Court and Main House have also undergone refurbishment. Emily Todhunter, who headed up the refurbishment, comments, ‘I fell in love with Dormy House the first time I went there. I don’t know if it was the way it is nestled into the hill overseeing that extraordinary landscape or because the staff and family were so friendly; perhaps it was the building itself, its warm Cotswold stone and roaring fires. It is a good, solid English farmhouse with no airs and pretensions to being anything else. If the building were a person, it would be a wonderful smiling farmer with stories to tell of bygone days.....but young at heart. It is that “young at heart” that we were asked to bring out in its reincarnation whilst respecting its charm and history. The process has been a happy collaboration between all who recognise the potential of this wonderful place

Testimonial We visited Dormy House on a blustery rainsoaked day, but this didn’t dampen our spirits or our experience. On days like that you really appreciate the hotel’s attention to detail – particularly when we were met from our car by a member of staff with an umbrella to shield us from the rain and welcome us into our new home for the night. And what a home it is! The Dormy is warm and welcoming, with the perfect combination of a new look with a lived-in feel. There were three lounges to choose from on our arrival, Red, Blue and Yellow, all with their own impressive log fireplaces already burning away. During a short tour of the newly opened hotel we were really impressed with the décor throughout, particularly the men’s toilets! The much-anticipated new Spa, opening early 2014, already sounds like an exciting reason to visit again.

and feel a responsibility to bring it into the next chapter of its life, preserving its history but with a new lightness, to give it a new lease of life. Personally, I can’t wait to stay there!’ Todhunter Earle was founded in 1988 by Emily Todhunter and has expanded rapidly both in size and scope. Projects range from English castles to well-known restaurants, ocean-going yachts, nightclubs, to ski chalets and beautiful homes throughout Great Britain and Europe. Another rare hotel project was the Manor aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire. Dormy House also features beautifully landscaped gardens by designer and BBC broadcaster, Chris Beardshaw and exceptional dining experiences created by Head Chef Paul Napper and Food and Beverage Consultant John Wood. House Spa, a stunning new destination Spa by Sparcstudio and Howard Spa Consulting, will be added in January 2014. For more information or to book please visit www.dormyhouse.co.uk or call 01386 852 711

We settled into our individually designed ‘Top Notch’ room – a spacious, beautifully designed, luxurious affair with a lovely view of the gardens and our own terrace – before heading down to dinner. We chose to eat in the Garden Room, the more formal of the Dormy dining options. Having looked at the menu we were anxious to save space for the amazing desserts and both plumped for the blade of beef for our main course. We had already heard some wonderful things about the Dormy’s new menus, both in the Garden Room and the Potting Shed, but we were blown away by the quality. The succulent melt-in-your-mouth beef with crisp Parma ham, parsnip pomme purée, thyme root vegetables and an oyster jus was beyond delicious, whilst the rhubarb crumble soufflé, which came highly recommended by our attentive waiter, rounded off a perfect meal. After a restful night’s sleep back in our room we were all set to move in and make it our actual home! Sadly, albeit after a delicious breakfast, we left our Cotswold retreat after a wonderful stay. We highly recommend the Dormy – with its faultless service, beautiful location and farmhouse chic design it is well worth a visit. Alastair McClare COTSWOLD LUXURY
