Lighting will not only overlay the design of your rooms with drama and subtlety, but also have a direct bearing on your mood and frame o f mind. well-lit rooms are by turns welcoming, cheering, soothing, safe, soulful and sensuous.
How to light your space 8

SPARKLING CRYSTAL (right), brings a magical dimension to a space, especially when it has been configured into a sculptural design andcombined with light. These Tulsa 2 swirling crystal hanging lights from Swarovski make a stunning focal point for a hallway or stairwell. DIRECTIONAL CEILING LIGHTS (opposite), such as these nickel globe-shaped examples from Robert Clift Lighting, are an extremely versatileingredient of a lighting scheme, as they can be used to highlight objects or art, or to wash walls and floors with gentle pools of ambient light.
L
ighting has to be considered at the very first stages of any project. It is such an essential design ingredient that it must be given sufficient funds from the budget so that you are able to achieve versatile, flattering light in every room. I take lighting extremely seriously, using the extraordinary number of light fittings and light types that are available, as well as creating my own – most notably the crystal Twists and Waterfalls, developed with lighting specialist Robert Clift. I have learned that to create successful lighting you must achieve a balance of light on all sides of the room. I use different light sources and bulb types to cast light in tones ranging from pure white to yellow, through to blues and soft greys. The three main light sources I like to work with are tungsten, low-voltage and LED. LEDs are a low-energy low-heat light source that can be fitted almost anywhere as uplighters, surround lights, floor lights and shadow-gap lights. The colour rendition is very white, but if you use them so that the light bounces back from a soft finish, the effect is far more gentle. Soft ambient light is generally created with tungsten bulbs, which produce a warm light; task light is provided
by low-voltage directional spots and reading, floor and table lamps; accent lighting can be achieved using LED strips for uplighting and highlighting wall finishes, fabrics and artworks. Downlighters are an essential part of lighting, but be careful how you position them. When installed around the edges of a room, they create a good general light, and some can be directional, aimed at objects or art. Avoid placing downlighters where they will shine directly over someone’s head, as this exaggerates signs of tiredness. A warm rounded glow that forms a wave of light across a room, in combination with gentle uplighting, is the most flattering form of light, both for you and for the room. I have had great success with shadow-gap lighting at skirtingboard level and on either side of staircases. The whiteness of the LEDs along the side of the risers and treads creates the impression of greater width, as well as drawing the eye. Recessed lowvoltage lights and LEDs can be installed as floorwashing lights for a soft, low glow. LED linear strips can be concealed within shelving, used within alcoves and to light cupboard tops, all of which allows the light source to reflect softly back into the room. LUXURY TITLES

SUBTLETY AND CONTROL (right top) in lighting is key. In this dining space up–down plaster wall lights, positioned symmetrically on the vertical banners with three tall vases of flowers below each one, glow on the wall. The lighting strip beneath the bespoke floating stone shelf provides another layer of soft background lighting. STATEMENT LIGHTS (right bottom) that are objects of beauty in their own right make wonderful additions to a living space. The beauty of this fluidly sculptural wroughtiron Sera Lantern floor lamp by Mark BrazierJones is that it looks hand-drawn into the space. When lit it casts decorative shadows on the walls and over my collection of treasures and artwork by Desiree Dolron. THE JOY OF THIS ARRANGEMENT (left) is not only the combination of the custommade crystal chandelier with the velvet and Novasuede Donghia Villa sofa, but also that the chandelier has been suspended so that it hangs where you would expect to see a table lamp. A series of crystal chandeliers, also made by the contractor, each hang at different heights through the stairwell, adding drama and glamour to the space. FEATURE | Kelly Hoppen - Lighting
LIGHTING CHECKLIST • The secret of good lighting is to have three or four circuits in each room, so that you can vary the light throughout the day and for different functions. Design for options and control. • Use dimmers or a pre-set system, so that you can have a ‘wow’ setting for evenings, a comfortable scene for day-to-day life, a sexy night-time scene and a bright scene for cleaning. • Often it is best to position pendants and chandeliers over a table or grouping of furniture to the side of a room, rather than in the centre, as doing this casts a welcoming pool of light.

LAYERS OF LIGHT Start a lighting scheme by assessing the natural light on sunny and overcast days, and take photographs as a reminder of how the light falls in the room. Refer to the list you made of everything you will be doing in the room. Check your floor plan for the positioning of furniture, which must be worked out prior to the lighting design. Draw up elevationsof every wall, showing where pictures, star pieces or collections will be placed. Pay attention to wall finishes and floors, as you want the lighting to bring out their best qualities. Sufficient floor sockets for lamps are essential. FOR MY LIVING ROOM (right), I chose the softest of low-level lighting, to subtly enrich the many matt and glossy textures at play – the black glass and white-waxed plaster walls, dark wood floor, sheer linen curtains, damask linen Modenature sofas, polished steel and brass coffee table, and lacquer and bronze side tables by Christian Liaigre. It is the perfect light to make anyone look and feel good, and is glamorous and soothing. DECORATIVE LIGHT the crystal and metal lizard lamp by Mathieu Lustrerie is both pretty and quirky. ATMOSPHERIC LIGHT the warm glow of firelight and candlelight can never be underestimated. SCULPTURAL LIGHTS the two chrome table lamps are stunning vintage pieces that look as fabulous unlit as they do lit.

CEILING LIGHTS The directional nickel ceiling lights wash the walls with gentle background light and highlight artworks. STATEMENT LIGHT The Kelly Light Sculpture is an intriguing ceilingto- floor silver chain and crystal piece designed by me for Spina. LIGHTING KEYNOTES I recommend having a five-amp circuit for table lamps, floor lamps and task lighting; a circuit for recess lighting that highlights artwork and wall finishes; a circuit for low-level or shadow-gap lighting; a circuit for wall lights and chandeliers; and an optional circuit to light fitted furniture. A STATEMENT PIECE (opposite far left), such as this Lustre ovale pendant from Galerie Van der Straeten, is very much a part of the welcome-wow aspect of this New york entrance hall. Hanging centrally above the cream lacquered table with antique-copper conical base by Robert Kuo, it illuminates the artwork I Am Not a Geisha, by Daniel Kelly, and casts patterns of light and shadow on the ceiling.
IPE CAVALLI’S TEXTURAL METALLIC WALL LIGHT (left) is an unusual example. The perforated metal mesh shade on a polished metal plate – reminiscent of a cheese grater – emits small points of light. THESE BRONZED BRASS LIBERTY FLOOR LAMPS (below) from Estro, with black painted shades, have beautiful flow of movement in their shape, which brings a sculptural element to the room and a utilitarian yet elegant feel. They work well as reading lights in a seating area.
THE DRAMATIC ARCHITECTURAL QUALITY (left) of this modern staircase is perfectly balanced by the Swarovski Tusla 2 hanging light, specially made to hang through all three storeys of this London townhouse. A SERIES OF FOUR NICKEL GLOBE TASK LIGHTS (near right) hangs above the cooking island-cum-breakfast bar in my kitchen, with additional nickel globe ceiling lights bouncing soft, balanced light into the space.

Natural selection As a self builder you’re probably more aware than most of your style and taste, however, buying natural stone flooring can be a major investment, so it’s worth taking time and effort to research the type of stone that works best for you and your property. To give you a taster: Limestone: a very beautiful type of stone with a highly distinctive appearance, hard wearing and has been used to pave prestigious structures for centuries, for example French and Italian palaces. Marble: renowned for its high gloss appearance, marble is rich, distinctive and durable. Synonymous with affluence and good taste, marble is available in a range of colours. To make a really luxurious and dramatic impact on walls, ask for a book match finish. Sandstone: a versatile natural stone, sandstone can be used both indoors and outdoors as to create both a formal or more informal/ rustic appearance. Sandstone is very evident in English stately homes and in its reclaimed state is absolutely stunning. Travertine: no two travertine tiles are the same. This is ideal if you have to replace a tile since it will enhance the look, whereas other stones have to be matched. Interesting fact: the Coliseum in Rome is built from travertine. STONE FACTS • Stone comes in a variety of different grades, and grading is done according to colour, quality and markings. Lesser grade commercial cut-offs are the lowest and hand-selected stone are the highest. When buying stone, don’t be shy to ask for proof of origin. That way you’ll get exactly what you paid for. • All stone is porous but, with the correct sealant, can last for decades. • There are lots of different types of stone and each has different qualities – always remember this when you’re looking to buy.

Granite: revered for its hardness, granite’s strength is its benefit, however the varying colour isn’t always the most appealing. It is ideal for places in the home associated with high wear and tear, for example kitchen surfaces. Slate: generally found in black or grey and, characteristically, has a very flat or riven surface Onyx: prized for its highly decorative appearance, onyx is intrinsically beautiful and makes a real statement. Simple sums Once you’ve established the type of stone best suited to your needs establish the dimensions of the space you’re looking to tile. Then add on at least 10% to allow for setting out and cutting. (It’s worth remembering that diamonds ultimately govern the price of stone: the harder the stone, the more diamonds it takes to cut and finish it). With the size in mind, it’s time to calculate the budget available. It might sound obvious, but always buy the best you can afford. With natural stone, for example, the softer and consequently cheaper stone may sound appealing but is less likely to last as long, so it could be a false economy. Remember you’ll need to factor in a whole range of costs including the purchase of the tiles; grout; sealants (if used); decorative tiles or mosaics; accessories and installation costs (if tiling is not your speciality).
Installation tips 1. It may sound obvious, but before you purchase any natural stone, be sure the floor underneath it is strong enough. If in any doubt strengthen it.

2. A s outlined in ‘simple sums’ (above), be sure to measure up correctly. Do a dummy run and establish exactly where the centre point is – this is where you will start to lay the stone from. 3. M ake sure that the surface you’re planning to lay the stone onto has been correctly prepared e.g. dry and clean with a level surface. If you do not prepare carefully at this stage the stone could be prone to cracking or becoming loose. 4. T hink about what colour grout you want. You could get one that matches the colour of the stone or one that contrasts and consequently highlights it. 5. R emember: all natural stone is porous and therefore requires sealing to ensure it always looks its best. Sealants are used to ensure stone tiles are resistant to stains. Colour enhancers further demonstrate why stone is so versatile, and various finishes include ‘colour enhanced,’ ‘light sheen’ or ‘matt’ looks. When you’re buying ask for specialist advice on the best way to care for your stone. Some manufacturers will give guarantees of up to 15 years on sealants – it really is worth investing in the best you can afford.

in the making! With projects ranging from country hotels to manor estates, Emma Sims Hilditch is recognised as a specialist in bespoke interiors for listed buildings. So when she was approached to breathe new life into a Grade I listed crescent known as Somerset Place, it was a match made in heaven.

enowned for serpentine crescents overlooking the rolling Cotswold landscape, Bath is a world heritage city that wears its architecture proudly. Somerset Place is no exception and has survived as something of a time capsule full of original Georgian plasterwork, fireplaces and original detailing from the late 1790s. “ I believe that good design is not merely a discipline but a way of life that seeks to challenge, inspire and engage,” says Emma. “When dealing with period properties, one has to work closely with each client to preserve the authenticity of the architecture while enhancing the character of the location so as to reflect the clients’ lifestyle and needs.” Emma and her team applied this philosophy at Somerset Place, which has a history to match its landmark status. The façade was designed by John Eveleigh in the late 1700s and is a typical

example of “Queen Anne front and Mary-Anne back” design characteristic of the era. Original purchasers would have bought a length of the façade and employed their own architects to finish the rear. The Second World War took a heavy toll on the property, which was badly damaged in the Bath Blitz in 1942. Following the war, the damage was gradually repaired and the building was integrated into the Bath Spa University campus. It was in 2005 that Somerset Place again made history as it became the first crescent in its entirety to be offered for sale in 200 years. Sims Hilditch were approached by Future Heritage Group to be part of a development team tasked with restoring the property to its original glory. “ It is very rare that an entire Grade I listed crescent is put up for sale. In fact, the last time one was on the market was when George III was on the throne so we were thrilled to be a part of its rejuvenation,” Bringing her signature style to the duplex garden maisonette was a matter of balancing the investor’s penchant for colourful contemporary living with the bones of the building. “ Our interior design scheme looked to preserve the elegant character of the historic Georgian architecture, whilst sympathetically introducing a contemporary palette of bright accents, luxurious materials, wide oak floor boards and a complementary mix of modern and traditional lighting,” Before Sims Hilditch were brought on board, the apartment seemed to have a split personality. Firstly, the duplex layout meant a physical dislocation between reception rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms on the lower ground floor. Another challenge was that the front rooms had more period features while the rear rooms felt more contemporary as they had been added later. “ It was vital that the generous proportions and striking period features took centre stage, so the design was stripped back to create a clean, classical feel that emphasised the natural light and mainly south facing views.”

With the design concept in place, the first port of call was to address the flooring on the ground floor in order to create a basis for other design elements. “ We were keen to achieve a chalky white feel to the floor,” explains Emma. “In this case, the flooring sets the mood and is a signature feature which pulls the entire ground floor together.” Colour is another feature which is artfully used as a unifying element that also gives each room a unique identity. In the drawing room, colours pick up the artwork from the owners private collection, while the considered use of greens and purples in the rear rooms and open plan kitchen dining area create a chromatic precursor to the landscaped garden. As a keen cook, the kitchen is one of Emma’s favourite areas in the home. When it comes to designing kitchens for clients, the first thing she does is imagine how it could enhance their way of living. “ You don’t need a lot of space for a kitchen to work but it is vital that it is easy to navigate. An island is brilliant for making a space sociable and also for acting as a boundary.” Not surprisingly, a key part of the scheme was making the most of the natural light, especially in the lower ground floor rooms. When it comes to maximising natural light, Emma advises the use of reflective materials like glass, metal and mirror. “ These do have a contemporary feel so it’s important to balance these finishes with textured materials like the grass cloth wallpaper which we used on the walls or the elegant linens and sophisticated silks we used for the bedrooms.” The overall result is seamless classic yet contemporary style; the signature look for which Emma is known. “It’s all about giving a nod to the old while creating a link to new,” she says. “It was a delight to be able to do this in a building as unique as Somerset Place.” SIMS-HILDITCH www.simshilditch.com LUXURY TITLES

Closest to the house, use straight lines for beds and patios to echo the geometric shape of the house – these straight lines can be softened with planting spilling over the edge. A garden plan is invaluable, either sketched out by yourself or for a larger garden drawn up by a professional designer, and will help a landscaper to provide you with a more accurate quotation. Planting is best done from March onwards, though, when the soil starts to warm up, and can continue through till November avoiding the frosts.
