Heart of glass... No home would be complete without windows. But with more architects opting to embrace the structural qualities of glass in their designs, glazing is being placed firmly at the heart of modern home building.

Occupying a remote coastal site overlooking Cardigan Bay, Cefn Castell makes use of structural glazing to bring the outside in. Structural frameless balustrading provides the property with seamless views. The spectacular threebedroom cliff-side home featured in Channel 4’s Grand designs and could be named as Wales’ Best Built home. Wind and airtightness were very important as the property was very exposed.

o what is structural glazing? In short it’s where glass becomes an intrinsic part of the structure, where its load-bearing capabilities are as, if not more, important than its’ aesthetic appeal. Kristian Hansen, of structural glazing specialists Clear Living, said: “Structural glazing allows us to do fantastic things with glass. “In traditional glazing it is the frame which provides the strength, be it oak, timber or aluminium. “But by utilising the structural qualities of the glass as a load-bearing medium, we can do away with frames and edges and create these aesthetically amazing living spaces of seamless glass which connect directly with the building, becoming an intrinsic part of the design. “The only place there may be a frame is around the edges, but the trick is to incorporate that into the building design so it’s buried within the structure.” Structural glazing generally uses an annealed soda-lime glass, which has a slight green/blue tint due to the presence of iron in the mix. The iron content can be removed to make the glass ultra-clear. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

The glass is toughened by reheating it and laminated for extra safety and security, while special coatings help to eliminate solar gain. During installation the glass is bonded to a frame using structural grade silicon, which has the capacity to secure huge weight loads while keeping the same waterproofing and movement qualities as normal silicon. In terms of thermal qualities, the µ values of structural panels are superior to traditional framing systems. Such is the popularity of structural glazing that almost all of the properties in the running for the 2015 RIBA House of the Year featured it in some way. Kristian’s firm Clear Living, based in Wincham, Cheshire, were brought in by architects to provide bespoke frameless glass frontage and minimal windows for two properties on the RIBA long-list, one in Formby, Liverpool, and another in Criccieth, Gwynedd. Kristian said: “For the property in Formby we were asked to provide minimal sliding doors which we managed using our Sky-Frame system. This gives a frameless appearance, with only 20mm sightline between the glass panels. Structural glazing on the front elevation gave a smooth flush appearance. “The property in Gwynedd was incredibly exposed, so wind and airtightness were very important. Structural glazing was used extensively to provide large 3000mm x 3000mm fixed panels. Minimal sliding doors were used with our Sky-Frame system. Structural frameless glass balustrading provided seamless views from the first floor bedroom towards the Irish sea.” One of the great appeals of structural glazing is that it gives the feeling of bringing the outdoors inside, and creating a connection which hasn’t been possible until now.

“ One of the great appeals of structural glazing is that it gives the feeling of bringing the outdoors inside, and creating a connection which hasn’t been possible until now” That’s why it’s typically used at the rear of a property, where people put their kitchen, dining and living spaces - areas where the views out are the best and the whole experience of connecting the inside with the outside becomes more meaningful. Kristian adds: “It’s a feeling people tried to emulate with bi-fold doors. They look good when they are open but we have to remember we live in the UK. “It makes more sense to design a building which works for 365 days of the year rather than one which is great for the seven days you can actually have your bi-folds open. “Structural glazing is useful for front elevations if someone wants to create a feature entrance, a statement hallway or something like a double-storey atrium at the front of the house.” So you’ve decided that it’s for you. What next? Kristian advises: “It’s not something selfbuilders should begin to think about tackling themselves. “It needs to be designed into the building before it even comes out of the ground. We work to tolerances of 2mm while a whole project might work to a tolerance of 10mm so it’s very important to make sure a specialist is brought in early on in the design process. “You have to understand glass. You need to know where it can be strong and where it can’t take too much of a load. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

“You also have to build in contingencies for glass failure. Working with an expert they will design in residual strength so the building stays intact while any repair is carried out. “It’s very difficult to retro-fit or integrate into a project which has already started. 99.9% of the projects we work on are new-builds, re-builds or extensions.” And the cost for all of this? Typically structural glazing will cost around 25% more than a highend framed solution. But as with everything, this will vary depending on the size and the exact details of the structure. the Porsche Cayenne A sharper design, boosted efficiency and extensive set of standard features: Those are the key characteristics of the Porsche Cayenne. As a sports car among sport utility vehicles (SUVs), besides offering five seats and extensive high-end features, it primarily offers a lot of room for a lot of driving fun. With high performance and typical Porsche design DNA. At first glance, the latest Cayenne can be clearly made out as a Porsche by its bi-xenon headlights, which are standard in the base and S models, with “hovering” four-point LED daytime running lights that are typical of Porsche. The high performance standard of the top model, the Cayenne Turbo, is emphasised by standard LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS).

In the interior, designers devoted much of their effort to the driver’s space – the driver now gets a multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles as standard; its look and functions are based on the steering wheel of the 918 Spyder. They also made the rear seating system even more comfortable, and seat ventilation can now be ordered as an option for the rear seats.

In its latest version, Porsche designers have given the Cayenne an even sharper design with precise lines and purposefully placed light refracting edges. Entirely new are the design of the front body, the front wings and the bonnet. Also new are the airblades: These air fins on the right and left of the vehicle’s front end efficiently guide cooling air to the intercoolers and also make a strong visual statement.

Power and torque have been boosted while improving fuel economy, enabled by numerous individual modifications to the entire drivetrain: for Porsche these are not incompatible or contradictory goals. For instance, the latest Cayenne models consume significantly less fuel, because of a coasting function, the further advanced “auto stop-start function plus” and optimised thermal management. Active cooling air flaps are now being used for the first time in the Cayenne models. They are located behind the middle air inlet and are controlled by engine management. They are opened or closed according to the specific driving situation and cooling needs; this way they adjust the air volume that is available for cooling. When they are closed they improve aerodynamics, which reduces air drag and thereby improves fuel economy.

The rear section of the Cayenne has also been thoroughly updated: the layout of the rear lights creates a threedimensional effect; the brake lights – like the LED daytime running lights in front – are designed in four elements. The licence plate recess, boot handle and lights are now integrated more elegantly into the boot lid. Designers also re-designed the car’s horizontal lines, giving the vehicle an even fuller stance on the road. The newly designed exhaust tailpipes are now integrated in the lower rear section. An automatically activating boot lid is a standard feature.

Miinus officially launched in the UK Four Seasons Interiors of Leeds, hosted a launch event on February 11th to celebrate their becoming the first UK retailer of the pioneering eco range of kitchens, the Puustelli Miinus. Attendees at the event included the Miinus project Manager, Tony Lonnqvist and Puustelli CEO Jussi Aine. Established in 1920, Puustelli, are the largest kitchen manufacturer in Finland and the Miinus range is the result of a â&#x201A;Ź1.5 million investment to identify the most ecological components for use in the manufacture of kitchens. The range employs the use of a groundbreaking bio-composite frame structure that arrives with a 30 year guarantee. Other benefits include almost halving the carbon footprint of conventional kitchens in a cabinet range that sets new standards for the kitchen sector. The First UK Retailer of New Eco Kitchen Range Announced Long established Leeds retailer, Four Seasons Interiors, will be the first kitchen showroom in the UK to offer Puustelliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s range of Eco Kitchens, the Miinus Range.

The showroom will be offering the range to clients from January 2016 and owner and Design Director, Ian Sandford stated, “We’re delighted and proud to be the first nUK retailer of a groundbreaking kitchen range especially at a time when consumers are so conscious of the environment when making buying decisions”, he continued, “I’ve long held the belief that Retailers have a responsibility to meet the eco demand and by offering the Miinus range, this will allow us to realise that ambition with a kitchen range that ticks all the Eco boxes”. The Puustelli Miinus range is the result of a €1.5 million investment R&D programme to develop a material to replace the standard Melamine Faced Particle Boards that make up the majority of kitchen cabinets. The complete range, from carcasses to doors, has been developed entirely on ecological grounds and utilises a biocomposite carcass frame that results in almost halving the Carbon footprint of existing kitchen cabinetry.

CASE STUDY Diane Berry Kitchens are well known across our county but they’re particularly well respected in the suburb of Bradshaw, outside Bolton. When residents Rachel and Tom Morris visited their neighbour’s home and saw their striking, contemporary kitchen by Diane they were instantly impressed and keen to introduce the same quality into their own home. The couple had bought a plot of land in Bradshaw and transformed a former cow shed into a stunning family home. They were very much involved in each step of the 18 month renovation, especially since Tom’s background is in the building trade. The couple’s two young sons were equally excited about the developments and looking forward to finally moving in to their rural home. They consulted architects on the layout and flow, coveting open-plan, family living. Fortunately they sought Diane’s design expertise just at the right time. Diane was able to re work some of the original plans, making the most of the generous space the couple’s home afforded them. Tom and Rachel were so thankful for Diane’s input, not just for their kitchen but in fact for much of the downstairs layout. ‘Diane is so talented and has such a good eye’ Rachel explained. The couple are delighted that their home works as well as it does for busy, family life. The home provided a real blank canvas for Diane and her talented team; they were on hand to help with the bigger decisions as well as the finer detail too. Rachel admits Diane thought of new ideas not just for the kitchen but for detail such as suggesting where windows could go in order to make the most of their home’s location and countryside views. The social space works brilliantly for the family and not forgetting their four legged friend Lottie; everyone is together. Rachel sums up their feelings on their finished kitchen ‘Diane is amazing!’

Brereton Hall... Having the rare distinction of a Grade I listing, Brereton Hall is a dramatic country residence standing in grounds of about 113 acres. In recent years, the hall has been refurbished by the current owners with well presented interiors now enhancing the wonderful architecture of this historic house.

t is believed that Brereton Hall is one of the first Elizabethan brick mansions to be built in Cheshire. It is understood that the building was originally built in the shape of an ‘E’ although the centre ‘bar’ was removed in later times and replaced by a vast conservatory built around 1829. The architectural historian, Nikolaus Pevsner simply states “the front is not easily forgotten”. This majestic western front greets visitors and is dominated by the magnificent octagonal twin towers which flank the splendid front entrance approached via a flight of wide stone steps. Originally the two towers would have been higher and crowned by ogee cupolas but now they are completed by battlement walls and connected by a fascinating bridge which offers a wonderful vantage point for views over the grounds.

The Legend of the Muzzled Bear There are many legends and traditions attached to the Brereton family and the hall, perhaps the most fascinating of which is the story of how the muzzled bear became part of their Coat of Arms. Sir William Brereton, having been interrupted by his valet at dinner, pursued him upstairs and in his ungovernable rage murdered him. Sir William, in fear and consternation of his horrible act, went to London to plead for the pardon of the King. The King refused but offered him a chance to obtain a pardon. He would allow Sir William three days in which to invent a muzzle with which to muzzle a bear and if it proved affective, his life would be spared. If not, the bear would provide his punishment! For three days Sir William was shut in the tower at the end of which he was brought before the bear who was let loose. The prisoner flung his newly invented muzzle over its head and escaped unharmed. From that time, the muzzled bear became the emblem of the Breretons and today it is depicted in various places around the house. The main entrance to Brereton Hall is heralded by a splendid staircase hall having a flagstone floor and beautiful ceiling mouldings with an intricate rose framed within a star shaped delicately moulded freize. Either side of the grand stairway symmetrical steps lead down to the cellars. The panelled sitting room has a fine cast iron fireplace with marble surround and carved panels above depicting the Brereton bear. The walls are believed to be oak panelled but carefully painted to cleverly simulate walnut. Upstairs the long central landing opens out beyond the extent of the reception hall below to provide generous open areas flanking the principal staircase. To the south is the charming minstrels gallery where a freize depicts many Coats of Arms reputedly of Estates within riding distance of Brereton. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

The principal bedroom lies on the southwest corner of the hall with two wide bay windows providing lovely views of the grounds. There is a fine carved stone fireplace featuring the Brereton bear and the room has a capacious ensuite bathroom with shower. There are five further bedrooms with a variety of architectural features and five additional bath/shower rooms at this level. It is believed that one of the smaller bedrooms was indeed Lord Breretonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite and retains its panelled walls and a fine fireplace with a mantelpiece incorporating the Brereton Coat of Arms with a seven fold shield recording ancient alliances of the Breretons with Edgerton and Belward, Corbet and Orreby. A more spectacular fireplace lies in the small dressing room off this bedroom and it is believed that this was installed in 1633 to celebrate the marriage of Lord Brereton.. Brereton Hall is approached from the private road through tall, ornate, wrought iron electric gates. A tarmacadam driveway sweeps up towards the house flanked on one side by traditional iron railings with pasture beyond and on the other side by banks of rhododendrons and numerous mature trees with the church grounds beyond. The trees and shrubbery obscure the house which comes into view as one approaches the front with the awe inspiring facade and central towers standing majestically above the drive. Areas of lawn and beds of lavender lead up to the front elevation and the impressive stone steps to the front door are flanked by raised flower beds.
