Following the completion of the house and its enjoyment for a year or two the client realised that there was a fundamental piece of the jigsaw missing from the lifestyle he had created. From white box garage to cutting edge man cave.

To the Batcave... A

lthough the house enjoyed a magnificent swimming pool hall with gym overlooking it at a mezzanine level, a dining room with a wine chiller contained within some gorgeous bespoke cabinetry and a stand alone cinema complete with the latest technology, looking out onto the driveway hinted at the missing component. Our clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection of sports cars sat on a driveway in the affluent south Manchester suburb of Bowdon where the weather was not always as pretty as the cars themselves. The cars were isolated, hardly ever garaged as a result of an awkward entry point to the garage itself which involved reversing back up a steep driveway to get the cars out. From within there was the usual hoarding of garage paraphernalia and wheelie bins to negotiate. Our client turned to The Design Practice by UBER who specialise in creative space planning and fit out of luxurious spaces for residential and commercial properties. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

The wish list evolved from housing two to three of the best cars in a plush environment that offered ease of access, to then include an entertaining space where our client could play pool in the glamour of a subterranean bar and watch the football with his mates. There were however fundamental obstacles to overcome. Not least there were two huge structural columns which were positioned awkwardly in the space. The floor to ceiling heights were already on the low side and yet we needed to get air conditioning and fresh air into the space. We then had the challenge of allowing for the cars to turn and enter and exit the space comfortably (rather than reversing up the drive) as well as providing a break between the garage space and living space that met with building regulations. The Design Practice by UBER set about to create a car ‘trophy cabinet’, to take the very finishes from inside these stunning vehicles and translate them onto the walls of the garage together with some bespoke hotel inspired materials. The space planning was critical and the task was to provide a feast for the eyes in a journey from the staircase leading off the main hallway in the house down into this space, a journey that hinted at a change of pace from the everyday living area at ground floor but also provided a jaw dropping arrival point from which to see the primary vehicle as a first impression. Combining successfully a ‘pedestrianised’ journey through the space and the practicality of housing vehicles that would be used in every day manner was only part of the challenge. Once we had decided on using a glass 26

encased car turntable for both the visual impact and also to provide that element of practicality we then had the challenge of working with engineers and a superb solution-driven builder in Joc Builders to plane out from the structural slab just enough to not undermine the integrity of the floor but just enough to give us the levels we required to successfully sink the turntable and maintain a flush floor. Once The Design Practice by UBER’s in-house space planners were happy and the layout was approved they set about detailing a very considered journey into the space from the ground floor hallway of the house itself. The key was to hint at something that would very quickly become an incredibly exciting section of the house, revealing it step-by-step and then providing at the right moment the all important ‘jaw dropping’ moment. We commenced this journey with a padded leather wall on the corridor space to the side of the staircase and introduced some low level lighting. This lighting carefully eluded to an opening in the leather panelling which discretely revealed the most glamorous of bathrooms with specialist metallic polished wall and bespoke basin finished off with a polished plastered ceiling and Italian sanitary ware. Beyond the staircase corridor one arrives at an oversized tinted pivot glass door with huge hand made crushed metal handle. The view beyond is both unexpected and overwhelming. Curved and tinted floor to ceiling glass surrounds an illuminated turntable on which sits proudly the most beautiful yet aggressive of the client’s vehicles, currently a McLaren 650S. A polished resin floor reflects the polished

plaster ceiling which in turn wraps around a central turntable and leads the eye beyond and passed a climate controlled, leather floored wine cellar and onwards to a fully fitted bar with booth seating, specialised mirror TV and a bespoke pool table. The circular ceiling feature that sits above the turntable was a masterpiece in design and engineering in itself, weighing over a ton in weight and being suspended from a heavily clustered ceiling full of pipe work and cabling, it needed a great deal of thought. In the design intent it was critical that we achieved a glow from the amber back lit precious stone that we had set our hearts on using together with a smoked mirrored central section to show the car off and reflect its beautiful aero dynamic shapes across the roofline. The precious stone was also the conclusion to the pool room cabinetry, drawing the eye to a warm focal point that gave the bottles in the bar cabinetry an extra dimension. The weight of the stone was substantial and proved a problem for use in the circular ceiling detail above the car as well as the fact that the waste in non usable material would have been enormous. We managed to get the slabs of the precious stone to site and once correctly illuminated with a continuous light sheet we photographed the pieces and then printed the high resolution image onto lightweight acrylic to use on the ceiling. This was highly successful and the faux material works harmoniously with the real precious stone in the bar area, something that would have been almost impossible to achieve had we not photographed and used the same pieces. Air conditioning ducts were housed in detailed coffered ceiling sections providing delineation to the pool table area and a level change was introduced to overcome the building regulation requirement to contain flammable

liquids between the garage element and living space. The Design Practice by UBER worked hand in hand with specialist AV contractors Ultamation to bring the space to life technologically and they did not disappoint. Every single element of the garage space and its electrical possibilities were considered to the ‘nth’ degree giving the client the possibility to start the car from a touch panel, rotate the vehicle to pre-set positions or continual ‘display spin’ with floor and ceiling illumination in showcase mode together with music from all angles and at the same time controlling the temperature in the chilled wine cellar and bringing fresh air into the pool room. Floor sensors on gate entry detect which of your vehicles is entering the garage space and all the settings can be customised to suit the particular driver as they drive in, from the music that greets you, to the lighting and even heating levels. The internal walls of the garage were finished in leather panels, strategically dimensioned to house openings and floor to ceiling wands of light. Even the garage door and its mechanism was given the same amount of careful consideration and concluded the cocktail of components that make for an inspired execution of total quality and a job that The Design Practice by UBER and its team are incredibly proud of. s a New Yorker, I am surrounded all the time by high energy and a rich spectrum of life and colour. For the past thirty years, this city has been the backdrop to my creative process, infusing the gardens I paint with an exuberant urban rhythm that I encounter on a daily basis. As a child growing up on Long Island, I used to frequent a small boutique in my home town owned by an elegant Indian woman whose garments held the sweet smell of fresh cottons and whose rich colours and intricate floral patterns sparkled like jewels in my memory. It was a wonderland for me; an early prophecy perhaps of a design career I would not embark upon until my early thirties.

My favorite childhood books were mostly of English origin; in particular, “The Secret Garden” and a small pocket-sized book called “Sarah’s Room” with a black and white illustration of floral wallpaper illustrated by Maurice Sendak. My own childhood room had a timid floral wallpaper on the walls, and bedspread with a fresh white and cranberry floral pattern and ruffled matching curtains. My Mother, whose love of the garden and own floral watercolours graced our home, were the early influences that ignited my desire for painting flowers. My design aesthetic has always been about eclecticism and layering pattern. I have been an avid flea market maven throughout my life; looking for that perfect chair anatomy to cloak in one of my floral or geometric fabrics. I am inspired by the work of Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard and William Morris, as well as the dense patterns of the Wiener Werkstatte and The Arts & Crafts LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

Movement. Where colour is concerned, I am more drawn to the Fauve movement, and the palettes of India and Mexico where the colors literally leap off the surface. My new wallpaper and fabric designer collaboration with Cheshire- based Clarke & Clarke, was a dream I had held in my heart for many years. I imagined bringing the joy of springtime into the home all year round, transforming dreary, long winters into joyful interior gardens. I envisioned foyers boldly decorated in hot pink flowers like “Rosina” creating the perfect “Welcome Home,” while bedrooms could become one’s private “Secret Garden” – a place to dream and lose one self amid the blooms. Toile wallpapers like “Caitlin” could grace a dining room wall; while a cherished Victorian or Danish modern sofa or chair could sport the orange- floral “Martine” or the modern, jazzy geometric “Brooklyn.” The “Art Book” collection was a total act of love, a birth of a dream. Each design was hand painted; none computer generated. For me, the

sensuality of working with pigment, the freedom to mix colors and dip my paintbrushes into a thousand greens of my own making, is just one part of the process that makes it irresistible. With an earlier career as a classical flutist, my creative process is always gently accompanied by a rich, sonic, inner- archive that makes its way into the garden both rhythmically and through the many frequencies colours emit. My mission is simple: to create gardens that bring healing and joy into the home. A home should be a place where we open the door and instantly feel embraced by positive energy. Deena & Howard wanted to transform their three story Saddleworth home into ‘the perfect place for entertaining’.

THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ENTERTAINING From the initial design meeting the team at ArtHouse Creative Interiors created a brief maximising the potential of the open plan setting incorporating our individual family wishes, it was as if they had read our minds. The suggestion of a dining seating sofa was a fantastic addition, as we needed a space where we could spend time together as a family, whilst also being a great entertaining room. The designers at ArtHouse managed to achieve a seamless balance, where the key kitchen zones were perfectly located in the heart of the working kitchen. Alongside the Miele appliances, we love the introduction of the pantry cabinet where all of our small appliances can easily be used, but can also be hidden away in a second. As we have such stunning views of the Saddleworth Valley we wanted to pull the outside in, so the champagne trough doubles up beautifully as a herb garden. The entire process from design to installation was a breeze and a delight to be involved with. Between the ArtHouse installation team and our builder Paul of Boarshurst Building Contractors, all trades worked in sync together with an end result we are thrilled with. It was a pleasure to work with ArtHouse Creative Interiors and we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them to our family and friends.
