Out of the ordinary Janine Stone & Co. replaced an Edwardian edifice with a contemporary take on a charming Arts & Crafts Dutch style country house.

he couple who commissioned this project had raised their family in the original residence on this site during the 1980s. With children now grown and departed, and a property tired from extensions and alterations over the years, the couple approached Janine Stone for a re-think. Both the necessity and opportunity for change was immediately apparent. With a property like this, these clients could have moved or renovated what they already had. Instead they took the courageous decision to leave aside any sentimentality, save themselves the stamp duty/VAT costs, and replace the house with a new one. Located on six acres featuring mature trees and woodland scenery, the design team at Janine Stone knew from the start that the new home should incorporate these advantageous into the design. Unlike itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ponderous predecessor, this home appears at home, hunkered down among itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural surrounds. 48

As one approaches this house, tantalizing glimpses of the home’s facade are caught along the sweeping journey from the main gate at back of the house around to the home’s front entrance. The unconventional roof lines are reminiscent of Voysey and tiled with the finest welsh slates. From almost every angle stunning views and natural light pour into the house, through the large mullioned windows, some of them over 8 feet tall, and allows the gardens to feel part of the living experience inside the home. To provide privacy and protection from the sun’s glare from the inside, the roof eaves have been extended. This ingenious design allows for perfect views out to the gardens, even when the summer sun is at its brightest. Janine Stone comments: “Our design concept was to create a home that brought the outside in. I was always conscious of this. Subsequently, when it came to create the interiors for this house I purposely chose neutral tones and aspired to create a foil for the wonderful garden vistas.” LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

The main living spaces including the sitting room, snug, kitchen and office utilise a soothing natural palette that takes cues from the surrounding landscape. Many of the choice textiles and fabrics, which upholster the furniture are natural materials, which reinforce the relationship between house and garden. The kitchen and double pantry fully embraces a modern, open-plan style that encourages us to spend time with friends and family in the kitchen. Given that one of the clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was a keen cook and held these values so dearly, the kitchen was perhaps one of the most important rooms to get right on this project. Janine Stone & Co. created a bountiful herb garden just a few steps away from the kitchen and this delighted the client even more. For the other client on this project, the indoor pool was the space that most excited him. The swimming pool itself was designed itself to the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s precise specification of 12.5meters, so that he could accurately measure his performances. The pool has a chic minimalist aesthetic that is created by exposing some of the brick work, which is has been smoothed down on one side and exposing natural timbers supporting the vaulted ceiling which have been painted in a white monotone colour palate that contrasts the mullioned window frames in black. From the pool room one can amble outside along a trail to a secluded yoga platform that resides in its own garden of tranquillity.

Sense of Beauty Janine Stone was tasked to create and construct one coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect house which would meet their needs for the rest of their lives, a place to indulge in their pastimes and watch grand children grow up. The brief was intensely personal and specific, the direction for the aesthetic both surprising and demanding, all with the intention of bringing together a superbly finished forever home. The client made bold choices with Janine and her design team, selecting sophisticated materials for both interior and exterior finishes. The comforting flow of rooms with clever connections to the pretty English country garden setting gives a sense of harmony. By landscaping the gardens almost as a series of individual outdoor spaces, the outdoor spaces feel very much like additional outdoor rooms. The end result is a wonderful residence which is both characterful and elegant offering beautifully spacious rooms which comfortably accommodates extended family gatherings and plentiful guests in some comfort. They were instructed earlier this year to commence with a full programme of refurbishment on this three bedroomed city centre apartment situated on the river Aire in the heart of Leeds city centre. At the start of any project, Ben Huckerby Design assesses the client’s requirement and studies their lifestyle in order to deliver their dream home that is not only aesthetically beautiful but works practically for their everyday life. As a design practice BHD always advise their clients regarding interior changes that may be deemed to affect the resale value of the property. In this case turning a third bedroom into a bespoke walk in wardrobe and adding more floor space to the second guest bedroom and hallway was the client’s preference. What started out as a simple kitchen progressed into a full apartment remodelling, as the original developer’s specification for this apartment was done in 2007 the clients felt it was starting to look rather tired and dated. The BHD team left no aspect of this apartment untouched. With clever interior remodelling, the new two bedroomed luxury apartment now boasts a grand master suite with a very impressive en-suite with steam enclosure and integrated waterproof television and fully fitted dressing room.. The Guest Bedroom has been extended by using space from bedroom three and now includes a bespoke inbuilt wardrobe and high gloss dressing table. In the living area large format porcelain tiles provide a seamless link between all the living areas. The clients wanted a timeless opulent scheme, teamed with all the gadgets required for modern living. This Apartment has an almost 360 degree of the Leeds

skyline from its large terrace. The apartment has been brought into the 21st century with a state of the art lighting system that can be operated from anywhere in the world along with fully automated blinds, for when the evening sun floods into the interior. Teamed with high quality workmanship this Penthouse has now rightfully earned the title of the highest specified apartment in the city centre. MAKE TIME TO LOOK AFTER YOUR PRIZED POSSESSIONS One of the many pleasures of owning a prestige timepiece, is ensuring that your prized possession remains in premium condition. Much like a car or your home, it needs regular maintenance and care. There are simple things you can do to look after your timepiece. Cleaning regularly should be standard practice but only use a soft and slightly damp cloth to clean metal watch cases and bracelets. This is even more important if the watch is made of precious metals - be especially careful of using any cleaning fluids at all as these can sometimes be too abrasive.

A Grand Entrance Not only is the entrance hall the welcome into a home, but it sets the standard and mood for the rest of the house as well.

ntrance halls create that first crucial impression. Whenever I come home, I look forward to experiencing the sense of wellbeing that my hall engenders. That is what you are designing for: the excited sense of homecoming. First impressions are lasting ones, and you do not get a second chance to create them. When you are designing, look at your home as a whole space, and imagine moving through and around it fluidly. Think about whether you are having wood or stone flooring, where this flooring leads and how it will work in conjunction with other rooms, as ultimately all rooms lead off the entrance hall. There must be flow and continuity between spaces to create harmony. Your hall is your hall, so use what you have and make the absolute best of it with wellplanned lighting and attention to detail. The hall must be practical, with a shelf or console for keys and bags, and cupboards for shoes and coats, but do always bring in that element of display with mirrors, flowers and objects. This is key to upping the sense of welcoming wow. As with entrance halls, remember to keep the flow of floor finishes harmonious throughout, as corridors link rooms to rooms. Work with, not against, the architecture of your home, and make much of textural contrast in your choice of materials and finishes. Slim floating display shelves do not intrude into this hallway, and the lighting underneath bounces off the polished wood floor, enhancing natural light. The grid will be enormously helpful when you design the doorways and doors, and in how you finish skirting boards – in corridors they can be matched to either walls or floor equally effectively. I approach the lighting design for corridors as I would for any other space, in order to make the most of them, as often there is little, if any, natural light. Low-level lighting that throws light to the floors, then bounces up into the corridor is particularly inviting and beautiful, as well as being flattering. Corridors are spaces, not just roads through the house – sculpture, objects, star pieces of furniture and pictures can all be used to give these spaces personality and charm. HALLMARKERS • Design for the wow-and-welcome factor, as well as for practicality; a hallway gives the first impression of the interior of your home.

The entrance hallway in my London home makes me smile every time I come home. The 1960s zinc mirrors from Philip Thomas are perfect for the space, striking just the right note of glamour. The long, slim double shelf allows me to display an ever-changing scene of flowers and objects. They are overlaid in this way because the house is in a crescent, and this was a great solution to disguising the curvature in the architecture. Nickel capping on the corners is a signature feature of the house – it is both highly practical and chic. The taupe poured-resin flooring runs throughout the ground floor.

• Create continuity of floor finishes, so that your rooms will flow harmoniously from one into the other. • I have exterior doormats, but you can inset a black coir mat within the hall flooring inside the entrance if you wish.

The beauty of this space lies in the tone of colour and the almost metallic textural quality of the plaster walls in conjunction with the marble floor and giant Shield plant pot from DK Home, a bronze sculpture in its own right. The rectangular niche built into the curved wall creates a yin–yang balance and a perfect display point.

CORRIDORS

The roads through your home are not places where you spend long stretches of time, but you do use them constantly, so their design is no less important than that of the rooms themselves. They are the linking spaces, so your design choices – materials, finishes, lighting and furnishings – should be in keeping with the overall feel of your house.

The entrance hall of this listed house, where little could be changed because of legal restrictions, has been thoroughly modernized with a black-and-white palette, and centred and defined by placing a section of black oak within the Thassos white marble floor. The Monpas table provides the ideal spot for an impactful flower arrangement. The rest of the space is simply and beautifully finished with white-painted walls and a series of three Pearl pendants with crystal drops from CTO Lighting.
