In recent years the kitchen has become an

all-embracing area for family and social life, where spaces are opened up into one another and we all endeavour to live more communally and freely. By Kelly Hoppen.

The theatre of the home T

he way we look at kitchen design is markedly different to how we viewed it even as little as five years ago. The influences of celebrity chefs such as jamie oliver, nigella lawson and gordon ramsay have shifted our perceptions of life in the kitchen possibly more than any other factor. We have been inspired to loosen up and cook with abandon. To cook and entertain at home is cool, and this, combined with the aspiration for open-plan living, has made the kitchen become a sophisticated cutting- edge environment of ease and beauty, with space for living, dining, playing and working. It is the theatre at the heart of the home, where you chill with friends, tackle homework and make plans. It is also the place where, if you were invited to a kitchen supper, you would think twice about turning up in your tracksuit. Kitchen planning I treat the subject of kitchens as being highly personal and specific. One of my jobs is

to deprogramme and then reprogramme my clients’ brains, so that first of all they agree to put their kitchen in the right place. The position of a kitchen should always be based on your way of living, rather than on where the kitchen is currently sited, irrespective of whether or not you have to reroute the plumbing. Work on the basis of available space and how you want to use the kitchen. Ask yourself questions and make a list of your needs to create a tight brief – all decisions need to be based on your vision, your requirements and your pocket. I bring in kitchen planners on every job, as the kitchen is the most complex of rooms and possibly the most important, since it is where most of us spend the majority of our time. Achieving a workable openplan space with three or four zones demands a meticulous and organized approach. At the first meeting, show the planner your mood board of ideas displaying the elements and furniture you wish to be worked into the scheme; explain your brief with as much detail as possible, to get to NORTH YORKSHIRE LUXURY

The glass-ToppeD islanD in my kiTchen was set with a four-ring gas hob. it is a triumph for me, as the rings are arranged in a single row, so that i never have to lean over a hot pan. the core of the design and the range of options. How many zones can you accommodate in your space? How will each one be lit? Do you want air conditioning or an integrated sound system? Will you need to install a suspended ceiling for extraction and ducting? What combination of surface materials will work in terms of both practicality and look? What proportion of your budget have you set aside for this room? The planner will have answers and solutions, but first you need to make the call on each question. Let the ideas flow and investigate your options, but stick to your brief to keep the kitchen workable for you, and compromise with care where you have to. Even though most specialist kitchen companies term their designs universal, this is not always the case. The same concept will not necessarily work for a couple with children as for a divorced man. Gender does come into it: boys like toys, and men tend to want it ‘easy’ in the cooking and eating areas, with perhaps the emphasis on the chill-out-and-play zone. A design’s conception will always depend on your circumstances and how you like to live. Surfaces and finishes There are wonderful surfaces to play with in kitchens – generally wood, lacquer, glass, stone, stainless steel and ceramic. Whatever you choose has to work for where you are putting it. I have successfully had wooden floors in kitchens (they need periodic refinishing) and less successfully had concrete and resin (they can crack if the substratum is not solid). Think of the tones of colour and the varying textures of the materials you like at the same time as thinking practically, because you want to make connections between the zones to give the room its balance. Design solutions: my kitchen The layout of my kitchen takes up the majority of the ground floor: there is an island– bar chill-out zone at the front of the house, which flows into the working zone, which flows into the dining zone at the back, which opens into the garden. I knew from the outset that I wanted a comfortable and open series of spaces in a monochromatic, textural palette. I wanted

a fireplace in the kitchen, up on the wall like a painting. My look is a tidy mess, and i like being able to pull things from the shelves without opening a door. This led to a new design of sliding cupboard-front panels in place of doors, which read to the eye as charismatic vertical banners, as they do not span the entire width of the cupboard shelves. Boffi built the kitchen units in a special mocha-toned lacquer, and the feeling in the space is that of a furnished room, rather than a zone of wall-to-wall storage. The use of milk glass (toughened glass with a painted and foil back) gave me a superb working surface for all the counters. It is very tough and practical, as well as beautiful and reflective, and i have come to use it in place of stone and wood surfaces all over the house because it is pricesavvy and relatively easy to install. These are personal examples illustrating how i reached certain design solutions and will perhaps inspire some original and practical solutions for your own project. Kitchen lighting Getting the lighting right is enormously important, but it does not need to be overly complex. All lighting should be controllable, by way of individual dimmer switches or a main pre-set control panel for each zone, which can be programmed for instant lighting settings. The principle is to have task lights by which to prepare food and ambient light to create and enhance mood. Discreet under-cupboard lighting is a must, and it is worth considering toplighting the cupboards to add a soft glow. I chose surface-mounted globe-shaped nickel lights, having tired of the pockmarked look created by recessed ceiling lights. I like to see lights, and I also love to see the detail of a nickel screw in a fixing plate – it adds to the overall beauty of the many layers of interest and texture. Appliances and furnishings For some, the choice of appliances alludes to the level their cooking has reached; for others, it is purely the kudos of having ‘it’ items. I have a thing about sub- zero refrigerators (the aston martin of fridges, freezers and wine coolers), am very particular about taps (pieces of sculpture),

My kitchen was made to measure by boffi in this mocha-toned lacquer finish. The cupboards have a slim banner-style sliding door that allows me to see and access crockery easily. I always wanted a fireplace in my kitchen, and this bd design fire sculpture has been set in a bespoke fireplace with a chrome edge, mounted high on the wall like a painting. The chrome and leather bar chairs were custom-made by talisman, based on one of their original pieces.

“ Whatever your design, never underestimate the value of comfort in a room”

would never be without a tap that provides instant boiling water, and like gas hobs that run in a line of up to five rings (they are practical and look incredible). I install air conditioning and like extraction fans that pop up from the counter. Whatever your design, never underestimate the value of comfort in a room where you are so often to be found. Instead of stools for my island– bar, I had some retro leather and chrome chairs altered to the correct height (and additional ones made). Everyone loves this part of my kitchen; it is not only the chill- and-chat zone, it is a place to work, read, have breakfast and generally ‘be’.

FEATURE | Indulge Yourself

Indulge yourself... By Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen

Personally, I think it’s a little pointless to live in a manor house and not indulge yourself with panelling, antlers, big stone fireplaces, concealed passages and all the things that such a space demands. But perhaps that’s just me...

W

hile this manor houses great room might have oozed history, thanks to several decades of unsympathetic ownership there was surprisingly little here of architectural interest. Apart from the Cotswold stone fire surround, the room itself was a blank (or more accurately beige) canvas. So, where to start? That the room needed bookcase units to house this huge collection of books was a given. In creating these, I took design inspiration from the bigwigs of history, the taste mongers and

style gurus of the seventeenth century (the time when this manor house was built) such as Samuel Pepys, who were all for covering bookcases in fabrics or hand-painting in patterns. Papered in the same custom-designed paper as the walls in rich shades of chocolate and orange, the bookshelves were built in wallet-friendly MDF (as the budget precluded polished timber), and the disparate colours and odd sizes of the books they house make for a randomly patterned, everchanging wallpaper background to the space.

FEATURE | Indulge Yourself

Accessory accents in slippery tangerine lacquer – such as the eye-catching faux-lacquered console table made using printed tissue paper and PVA – bring warm hospitality to the chocolate brown throughout this north-facing room. It’s the perfect plinth for the laser-cut iron lamp bases and shades showing continuous views of Venice. Finally, for practicality’s sake I bordered the pale, sand-coloured carpet with rufty tufty brown, so that constant journeys in muddy country boots wouldn’t make their mark. I chose sofas for this room that would be of a comfortable size, but not so gigantic that they would dwarf the space. Covered in cosy silk velvet, they’re the perfect perch for conversation. The large coffee table is, in fact, an old wooden door (carved with the date 1672, which places it around the age of this part of the house) simply displayed on an MDF plinth covered in a piece of carpet. The panels aren’t hugely convenient for putting down items that need to balance on a flat surface, so I’ve placed a series of lacquer trays, books and platters to act as safe perches for those coffee cups or water glasses.

28

NORTH YORKSHIRE LUXURY

“ the taste mongers and style gurus of the seventeenth century” This room profits enormously from its uninterrupted blocks of displayed books and art, so using guile to cover the tracts of utilities or dull conveniences is one way of preserving the space’s bookish character. The large bookcase behind the sofa conceals a spring-hinged panel door – leading to an odd collection of boot and flower rooms – over which real book spines have been stuck. Meanwhile a simple, gate-hinged flap on which I’ve hung a framed map conceals a large flat screen television. I’ve drawn attention to the pleasing rhythm created by the four tall windows in this room by using elegant tangerine-lined curtains and by placing bronze radiators in the spaces between each. Stone shelves turn the radiators into console tables, whilst bronze mirror panels on which I’ve hung ornately framed portraits make a knowing nod in the direction of early Georgian decorating, where light was maximised by placing classical ‘looking glasses’ between windows. When a pioneering Wiltshire based kitchen factory lay dormant after becoming a victim of the economic downturn, a group of 8 friends re-opened the doors and formed McCarron & Co, a brand new production company.

Yorkshire based Stephen Neall and McCarron & Co Wiltshire became bonded by a common goal to design and make beautiful furniture. At a time when others stood still, Stephen Neall were busy creating a new high street showroom and a furniture collection incorporating the latest technologies, higher production quality and better standards, thus raising the bar in luxury kitchens. The decision to completely replace the original Stephen Neall showroom, established in 1982, on Prince Albert Row in Harrogate, was a bold move incorporating dramatic changes.

“Innovative furniture of uncompromising quality” The total refurbishment, including shop frontage restoration to a classic period style, and reinstatement of the original Victorian high ceilings, has created a gallery style studio that is bright and welcoming. McCarron & Co by Stephen Neall is the only northern flagship store to present this exciting collection of high quality English kitchen furniture, supported by premium appliance brands Miele, Wolf and Sub Zero.

Inspired by the kitchen at Hampton Court Palace Inspiration for the furniture styles came from various sources. Our Hampton kitchen window display was inspired by the kitchen at Hampton Court, where the iconic giant fireplace is not only a focal point, but the hub of cooking in this historic palace. Our Modena kitchen display with oversized hand cast aluminium handles, was inspired by an exquisite collection of silver plated cutlery by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, pieces of which are now showcased in a glass display box within the display itself. There are many product highlights for us to be excited about and for our customers to enjoy.

Visiting the showroom will always leave you with a sparkle of the team’s infectious enthusiasm. When you combine the dedication and creativity of the design team at the Stephen Neall Group, with the quality and superior branding of our partners McCarron & Co kitchen furniture, you have a strength that is difficult to match and is unlikely to be beaten.

The Stephen Neall Group was established 30 years ago, as a dedicated studio for premium kitchen design in Harrogate. With a natural instinct for design and for business development, the company soon began creating full house interiors. The Poliform part of the journey started some 10 years ago when business owner Stephen Gee had the vision to develop, but needed a property big enough for his ambition, and an international brand that offered day and night furniture with uncompromising quality and at the forefront of lifestyle trends. This vision has now become a reality, with the opening of The Factory building and the launch of the only UK Poliform/Varenna flagship store outside London. Poliform North has been a real labour of love for the whole team including designers, management staff and sub contractors. Ever since the original showroom was opened on Station Parade, The Factory building has been temptingly tucked away down the back of Station Parade, always of interest not only for the expansion of the company, but for the chance to bring life back into a tired building that was once a thriving depot for Craven Dairy. When it came up for sale in 2008 Stephen knew that, having missed the opportunity to buy for £68,000 in 1989, this time must have it and began to relish the challenge of transforming it into what you see today. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s 1960’s studio in New York, of the same name, the Factory in Harrogate is a place for inspiration and a perfect meeting venue for clients, designers and

32

architects. The 9000 sq ft historic building has been converted into a cool contemporary oasis on 3 floor levels, overlooking the main railway line to Kings Cross London, and only metres away from the railway station. The store truly has an urban buzz, demonstrating the ability of the Stephen Neall team, but more so the essence of the Poliform brand. Visitors can meander through a series of room sets featuring kitchens, wardrobes (including walk-in), sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, beds and accessories.

Poliform North showcases a luxury complete home experience In a truly unique environment, the showroom style is unlike most furniture stores and has been described by management from Italy as one of the top 5 Poliform stores in the world. The layout is graphic and atmospheric, accessorised in a precise and ordered way.

“One of the finest showrooms in the world” As part of a genuine family business, it is evident that the team members of The Stephen Neall Group, dedicate their lives to preaching the modern lifestyle. Bridging the gap between the architect and the interior designer, their reputation has enabled them to trade almost exclusively on repeat business and word of mouth for over thirty years, a testament to the passion, the dedication and the reliability of this team. Their boundless enthusiasm for the business and the new Poliform North project is infectious.

Old School A Sims Hilditch project

When Emma and John Sims Hilditch first stumbled across a row of old farm cottages in a pretty village in Wiltshire they knew they had discovered a hidden gem. The three derelict homes with small barn attached, dated back to 1790 and had originally housed the village school; but years of neglect had left the properties needing a complete restoration.

T

he first step into breathing new life into these Grade II listed cottages was to apply for permission to open up the space to give them an open plan living area to suit their young family. The challenge was in sympathetically re-organising the property whilst maintaining much of the character of the old buildings. The result was an elegant three-bedroom home that comfortably accommodated Emma and John’s family for over 15 years. However in 2010, with a husband and three children, an award winning interior design practice and two cats all squeezed in, Emma decided the time had come to convert the barn to create an open plan living space to properly cater for their extended brood. The conventional route would have been to create two stories throughout. Instead, Emma designed a

mezzanine level and stunning full height sitting room that dramatically opened up the space and created a sense of theatre, light and space. The huge glazed barn doors, rendered limestone fireplace and fitted bookcases with a ladder for access, all create a spectacular setting, which is cleverly offset by the informal layout of the kitchen area. Emma felt that “what makes this house a home is the balance between the space that lets everyone do their own thing and the cosy areas around the woodburners.” To create the dramatic full height effect whilst 46

maximising the accommodation Emma raised the roof to its original height and organised the interior so that she could introduce a mezzanine level with a new upper storey for a bedroom and bathroom above the kitchen and dining areas. An elegant dining room helped sympathetically link the two structures, whilst the introduction of a beamed roof, exposed stone walls, and floor to ceiling doors, helped to preserve the character of the barn, whilst introducing the crisp, contemporary feel of the present. To ensure the building retained its sense of the past, Emma used plenty of local vernacular materials, such as Cotswold reclaimed stone that helped retain its historical roots. A less expensive, but just as effective design trick, was her clever use of new wood, which was given a limed effect by colour washing with thinned paint. Used as timber boarding on the kitchen and dining room ceilings, it gave the impression the building had been that way for generations. Emma uses layering as a practical, functional and effective technique throughout the conversion. The different finishes she introduces such as fabric walls, timber boarding and rendered limestone, all bring a depth of colour, texture, light and character to the overall design. Combined with a play of scale with the full height sitting room, impressive fireplace (designed by John and Emma), and flanking large sofas and beautiful table lamps, the feeling of space and size is energising and enthralling. When combined with the warm, cosy winter sitting room and atmospheric dark hallway, you have an intriguing and engaging space that keeps on surprising. Her design of the elegant new bedroom and bathroom on the upper storey employs the same technique to beautiful effect. The open rafters create a sense of drama, which is complemented by the modern four-poster bed and large floor to partition-height mirror. The light pours in from the bathroom and surrounding open eaves. Emma’s inspiration for this new addition came from “the wonderful quality of light” that floods the top floor conversion. The freestanding bath, painted in a stylish Moss by Neptune has been NORTH YORKSHIRE LUXURY

placed between two bedroom windows so they can enjoy the expansive view while bathing. The palette throughout the house is soft and restful, whilst feeling fresh and modern. The use of a soft wool plaid fabric for the curtains by British design company, Mulberry Home combined with the cushions by De La Cuona add elegance and warmth. Much of the beautiful interior furniture and accessories, including their stunning Chichester Kitchen and Sheldrake Dining Table are part of the sophisticated Neptune Collection, a stylish lifestyle brand run by husband John Sims-Hilditch. 48

Emma’s approach throughout the conversion is understated and elegant. The overall effect gives the subtle impression that it has been simply stripped back to the bare essentials. It’s a cleverly restrained use of colour, light and architectural detailing that adds drama and ease, glamour and comfort. Not an easy balance to satisfy so completely, but one Emma has done with great success.

The Beauty of

Stone

66

NORTH YORKSHIRE LUXURY

F

rom breathtaking modern masterpieces to captivating country cottages, the beauty of natural stone can take your breath away. Nowhere is this more evident than the magnificent structures around the world – Stonehenge, the pyramids, English castles and French chateaus are just a few examples. These are natural stone constructions that have stood the test of time, paying homage to all that is great about natural stone: strength, beauty, durability, authenticity, timelessness and versatility. Natural beauty Stone is a completely natural material shaped by centuries of evolution, and every single stone tile is different. In fact, with natural stone its individual nuances are its beauty. What’s more, the older stone is, the more exposure it has, the more beautiful it becomes, offering a natural charm which is hard to rival.

FEATURE | The Beauty of Stone

Natural selection As a self builder you’re probably more aware than most of your style and taste, however, buying natural stone flooring can be a major investment, so it’s worth taking time and effort to research the type of stone that works best for you and your property. To give you a taster: Limestone: a very beautiful type of stone with a highly distinctive appearance, hard wearing and has been used to pave prestigious structures for centuries, for example French and Italian palaces. Marble: renowned for its high gloss appearance, marble is rich, distinctive and durable. Synonymous with affluence and good taste, marble is available in a range of colours. To make a really luxurious and dramatic impact on walls, ask for a book match finish. Sandstone: a versatile natural stone, sandstone can be used both indoors and outdoors as to create both a formal or more informal/ rustic appearance. Sandstone is very evident in English stately homes and in its reclaimed state is absolutely stunning. Travertine: no two travertine tiles are the same. This is ideal if you have to replace a tile since it will enhance the look, whereas other stones have to be matched. Interesting fact: the Coliseum in Rome is built from travertine. STONE FACTS • Stone comes in a variety of different grades, and grading is done according to colour, quality and markings. Lesser grade commercial cut-offs are the lowest and hand-selected stone are the highest. When buying stone, don’t be shy to ask for proof of origin. That way you’ll get exactly what you paid for. • All stone is porous but, with the correct sealant, can last for decades. • There are lots of different types of stone and each has different qualities – always remember this when you’re looking to buy.

68

NORTH YORKSHIRE LUXURY

Granite: revered for its hardness, granite’s strength is its benefit, however the varying colour isn’t always the most appealing. It is ideal for places in the home associated with high wear and tear, for example kitchen surfaces. Slate: generally found in black or grey and, characteristically, has a very flat or riven surface Onyx: prized for its highly decorative appearance, onyx is intrinsically beautiful and makes a real statement. Available in a wide range of jewelcolours.

FEATURE | The Beauty of Stone

Simple sums Once you’ve established the type of stone best suited to your needs establish the dimensions of the space you’re looking to tile. Then add on at least 10% to allow for setting out and cutting. (It’s worth remembering that diamonds ultimately govern the price of stone: the harder the stone, the more diamonds it takes to cut and finish it). With the size in mind, it’s time to calculate the budget available. It might sound obvious, but always buy the best you can afford. With natural stone, for example, the softer and consequently cheaper stone may sound appealing but is less likely to last as long, so it could be a false economy. Remember you’ll need to factor in a whole range of costs including the purchase of the tiles; grout; sealants (if used); decorative tiles or mosaics; accessories and installation costs (if tiling is not your speciality).

Installation tips 1. It may sound obvious, but before you purchase any natural stone, be sure the floor underneath it is strong enough. If in any doubt strengthen it.

“ the softer and consequently cheaper stone may sound appealing but is less likely to last as long”

2. A s outlined in ‘simple sums’ (above), be sure to measure up correctly. Do a dummy run and establish exactly where the centre point is – this is where you will start to lay the stone from. 3. M ake sure that the surface you’re planning to lay the stone onto has been correctly prepared e.g. dry and clean with a level surface. If you do not prepare carefully at this stage the stone could be prone to cracking or becoming loose. 4. T hink about what colour grout you want. You could get one that matches the colour of the stone or one that contrasts and consequently highlights it. 5. R emember: all natural stone is porous and therefore requires sealing to ensure it always looks its best. Sealants are used to ensure stone tiles are resistant to stains. Colour enhancers further demonstrate why stone is so versatile, and various finishes include ‘colour enhanced,’ ‘light sheen’ or ‘matt’ looks. When you’re buying ask for specialist advice on the best way to care for your stone. Some manufacturers will give guarantees of up to 15 years on sealants – it really is worth investing in the best you can afford.

Wallpaper... a Global Style At the beginning of the industrial era, there were just two contenders locked in a battle for world supremacy in the field of wallpaper production – France and Great Britain.

T

he dawn of the 20th Century saw production take off globally. France remained a front runner for elegance and chic, but British designers were the most adventurous. Then, in the period between the wars, the Germans also began to make their mark, enlisting the support of major contemporary artists, and today Germany is a leading producer, with the huge Russian market conveniently located on its doorstep. Although originally slower to embrace wallpaper than Europe, the US and Canada have long since made up for any lost ground. The Scandinavian countries were relatively quick off the mark and introduced some genuine design innovations. Italy, on the other hand, continued to prefer paint to paper for many years but it is now the home of the luxury brands. Spain, predictably enough, began

76

producing designs that would have looked at home in an Almódodovar film, while the Russians, rather than manufacturing wallpapers, have generally opted to buy them instead. Wallpaper it seems, is as varied as any other aspect of global culture. The British have been pioneers in wallpaper design since its earliest days. Queen Victoria is said to have taken a close interest in the choice of wallpaper for her various residences, insisting on identical colours and patterns – perhaps to ensure that she would feel at home in all of them. And British designers, traditionally regarded as the most innovative, have always had a talent for balancing quirkiness with tradition and a hint of wit. Sanderson is one of the most internationally renowned of British brands. The firm was founded in London in 1860 as

an importer of French wallpaper, but began to commission original designs in the late 1860s and built its own factory in 1879. Its papers were the work of designers including Christopher Dresser, George Haite and most notably C.F.A. Voysey, a magnificent Art Nouveau designer, decorative artist and architect, who also designed a new factory for the company in 1902. A pioneer of colour advertising from 1911 onwards, Sanderson was awarded a Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Wallpapers to King George V in 1923, and began to license motifs from the Disney Studios in the 1930’s. It also bought up other firms including Rottman, Strome & Co., Charles Knowles, Turnbull & Stockdale and – most significantly – Morris & Co. in 1940, thereby acquiring all of the printing blocks and pattern books belonging to the great William Morris,

philosopher, designer and father of the 19thcentury Arts and Crafts movement. The last member of the Sanderson family left the business in 1965 and it was bought by the Walker Greenbank group. The brand, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010, has long been associated with upmarket elegance in a vivid and sophisticated colour palette, and has always remained faithful to the English country style. Graham & Brown was established in the aftermath of the Second World War by two friends, Harold Graham and Henry Brown, both of whom were passionate about new printing technology. Harold Graham died in 1951, but the company continued to expand with financial backing from the founder’s sons, and by the 1970s it was producing millions of rolls of wallpaper, becoming one of the top independent manufacturers in the UK. The third generation forged creative links with interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, as well as Linda Barker, Marcel Wanders, Wayne Hemmingway, Basso & Brooke and more recently designer Kelly Hoppen and fashion icon Barbara Hulanicki. This dynamic company has even organized competitions in art schools as a means of 78

recruiting new design talent and has built close links with the fashion world by selling its products through retail chains such as Monsoon. Its website offers a host of different wallcoverings, including ‘wall jewels’ for a customized look, and an ‘eco’ range that is manufactured without the use of harmful chemicals and printed on paper from manufactured sources. Osborne & Little also grew up out of friendship, this time between two brothers-in-law, Peter Osborne and Antony Little, who started out with a small showroom in Chelsea in 1968 and went on to build the Osborne & Little empire thanks to their award-winning first collection of hand printed wallpapers. The firm has expanded its product range to include fabrics, trimmings, accessories and furniture, creating complete interiors in which everything complements everything else. For the last forty years, Osborne and Little creations have occupied a central place in the world of interior design, form the paint effects of the 1980s to the current metallic trends, via the sun, moon and star motifs of the 1990s. Osborne & Little have also began distributing designs by Nina Campbell and the Parisian design studio Lorca. What all of these wallpapers have in common is a fresh colour palette and what might be described as a poetic approach to pattern. Colefax and Fowler – the creation of John Fowler, Sibyl Colefax and Nancy Lancaster – were founded on London’s Fulham Road and for the last fifty years have embodied the essence of English style, that sense of timeless elegance that is so characteristic of modern British interiors and which blends comfort, a restrained palette and relaxed informality. Colfax and Fowler also market the work of other design talents, including Manuel Canovas and the highly original work of Jane Churchill, whose fresh and relaxed designs seem quintessentially British.
