Bathroom Design

The bathroom is the only room in the house where you can lock the door and claim the Space as your own. The privacy in itself is a luxury. The bathrooms I design for my clients are all bespoke and are based on the Japanese bathing custom: the ceremony of cleansing, followed by relaxation in a hot tub.

he first step in bathroom design is to decide how many you need and where to site them. Actual space for bathrooms is usually taken from other rooms. A whole section of a master bedroom may be given over to a wet room or bathroom, although mostly an adjoining room is turned into a bathroom, with a shower, bath, basins and loo, perhaps with an interconnecting dressing room or space for a massage slab. You might be able to accommodate a shower room and separate loo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is often the configuration that men prefer, whereas women tend to favour big bathrooms with two sinks and good storage. Once you have defined your requirements, it is relatively easy to design a bathroom if you use the grid, to see the potential of your space and workout what goes where. Taking a line from the door across The floor and up to the basin is always a successful Option, as is a banner that draws your eye through the space from the window to the bath or shower. I favour bathing over showering, so my own bathrooms always have the bath at the centre of the design. Bathrooms are expensive, and invariably a large chunk of the budget will be taken up with the plumbing: The constant flow of hot water; the right pressure for the shower. This requires professional help, as often a house will need some new plumbing and changes to water systems in order to function to a high standard. 8

The reflective quality of glass, together with superb lighting, creates a magical atmosphere in my bathing space. The Starlet bath by Bette has been inset into a milkglass surround, which ties in with the adjacent glass shower enclosure. I have used KH2 taps from my own range for Waterfront Bathrooms. They are mounted on a floating wall of marble, with lighting behind that defines the space and lights the area beautifully.

FOUR VIEWS of my own bathroom (see previous page for first) show how the room works as a whole. The grid line from the bath across the floor to the basin was taken in the form of a blackened oak banner set into taupecoloured milk glass, as this centred the room and gave the bath prime importance. The grid lines are further in play in the way the cupboards flank the mirror and basin. The washstand and mirror, glass bath surround and shower enclosure are all bespoke, and the backlit floating marble wall behind the bath was also specially made to my design. All the taps and the black shutters are from my ranges, and the White Bishop side table is by India Mahdavi. the lighting scheme was designed by Robert Clift and me. In addition to the backlit wall behind the bath, there is more concealed lighting behind the loo and basin, again giving a soft, flattering light. Pre-set controls have been programmed to give several instant settings at the touch of a button. This bathroom illustrates just how the symmetry of line and mix of wood and glass textures create a luxurious and timeless statement that is very much my signature.

The elements that make up a bathroom – the taps, sinks, bath, joinery, materials and finishes – give the space its personality. Sublime comfort is the aim, as this is the only room in the house where you can shut the door and look after yourself. MATERIALS and their various tones and textures play a key role in creating the overall look of a bathroom and giving the space its point of interest. in this bathroom the hero material is the wonderful grey-veined Arabescato Stone, which has been used on the floor and two walls. Its lively texture has been balanced by the soft grey plasterwork on two of the walls and the pared-down ebonized joinery and streamlined shelves. The use of mirror on the cabinet, together with a selection of glass accessories and vases, provides a reflective lift. THE FLOW of marble continues into the shower room and is in beautiful contrast to the polished plaster wall. I often design the up-stand skirtings to match the floors, as i have in this case, as this continues the flow of line.

LIGHTING must be well planned and flexible, to allow for different light levels and moods. Task light for shaving and making up has been integrated into the mirrored cabinets, as this gives the right kind of light to see properly, while still being soft on the face. There are also directional spotlights on a pre-set control panel, and the joinery has lowlevel lights that are set to glow at night. The niche in the wall by the bath provides a convenient spot for candles, for a relaxing bathing experience. STORAGE is essential to bathroom design, as there is so much kit and therefore potentially so much mess. Have on display only what you really want to see, and keep the rest hidden away. FITTINGS are available in a vast choice of shapes and styles for all budgets.

Research your options thoroughly at specialist bathroom suppliers, to find the right bath, basins, loo, bidet, showers and taps to suit your needs. The bath should be the most comfortable and shapely you can find. installing two sinks makes the morning rush much less stressful, and the sink unit can incorporate allessential storage. Here the simplest of round sinks and bathtub balance the lines of the room. TAPS are sculptural art pieces and come in all styles, from the simplest of squared-off designs to elongated ceilingtobasin versions – these are from my range for Waterfront Bathrooms. A TELEVISION can be set into the bathside wall (opposite), a luxury that is increasingly requested – in the same way integrated music in every room is now a standard ask.

While thinking about your hard surface materials, work with the grid so that you can make the most of the space and create the ‘lines’ of the room, perhaps with a banner in a contrasting material that runs across the floor and up the wall. next choose the fittings, bearing in mind the textural contrast and subsequent spirit of the room. avoid overhead lights that will shine unflatteringly onto the top of your head – my advice is always to work with a lighting consultant.

BATHROOM CHECKLIST At the planning stage, make a decision on whether to bring music and/or television into the bathroom. Take the advice of your contractor and structural engineer about water flow rates, bath sizes, weight loads and tanking (waterproofing). Baths, basins and taps are the room’s accessories, so choose carefully. The lighting design should incorporate three circuits: one for main directional light, one for task lighting at the basin, and the third for soft backlighting and low-level lights. The final touches are as important here as in any other room, so where space permits have an inviting seat.

SPA DESIGN Lynn Russell-Hanson, interior designer for sauna and steam specialists DaleSauna, gives her tips on creating a beautiful home spa. Why invest in a home spa? People are keen to incorporate health and wellbeing into the fabric of their home. Our clients want to create bespoke wellness spaces, which meet their specific health and fitness needs, and which they can use at their convenience. The decision for clients is not sauna versus steam, but whether to add salt inhalation or a Hammam table to their home spa. Depending on these decisions and the space available, today’s home spas can offer everything from swimming pools and spa baths to sauna and steam rooms to heated loungers and foot spas. Some clients have even incorporated a dedicated treatment room for massage and other therapies in their home spas. What key elements should a home spa include? Water is considered a vital element of the spa, either in the form of a pool or spa bath, complete with massage jets to treat stiff, aching muscles. The thermal experience – sauna and steam room – is still at the heart of the spa. And today’s range of materials and finishes means they can be entirely bespoke to each client. For saunas, some prefer the fine grain and pale hues of the knot-free hemlock and obeche

timbers. Others opt for the rustic look and refreshing scent produced by pine and cedar, which also take on a warm golden tone over time. The sauna traditionally features tongue and grove panelling in natural wood, but we are seeing growing demand for laminated timber panels. Our NaturEL specialist veneered board is specially formulated to perform in the high sauna temperatures and provides a more contemporary aesthetic. Continuing the contemporary theme, glass fronted saunas are proving an increasingly popular choice for their sleek look and uninterrupted views. Multi colour or fibre optic lighting and sound systems can further enhance and personalise your sauna. A number of heating options are also available, including the traditional sauna heater, and also individual Infrared panels which offer a wide range of medical benefits. Some clients prefer to relax in a steam room with the gentle warmth of steam infused with natural essences. These can be customised to suit almost any space with a variety of aesthetic finishes from the traditional Hammam to a more contemporary look. The current trend sees a move away from mosaics to large format tiles in neutral shades. Again, fibre optic and LED lighting can be used to good effect here. LUXURY HOMES & INTERIORS

Where should home spas be located? Many of our clients are building extensions to house their new wellness spaces, complete with home gyms. An increasing number of people are installing spas in their newly dug basements. Outdoor saunas and spas are also a possibility, and installations in gardens can be lovely giving views onto nature. Electrical cables from the home to the sauna can be placed discretely amongst the shrubbery without being ‘dug in’. What are the key colour trends for home spas? White is still a huge presence in spas; people aren’t afraid of using white on white to create a near medi-spa atmosphere that suggests order and an almost clinical simplicity. I think this would have been viewed as too chilly a few years ago, but that’s no longer the case. Also a natural palette never goes out of fashion: nature is a constant and varied inspiration, but nothing too saturated, colours are fresh but muted...no more lime green and wenge. What about lighting? Lighting is incredibly important to creating the right mood in your home spa. We all know that turning down the lights can be enough to switch on our internal relaxation button, but coloured lighting can really lift the mood. Even white light comes in different colours with yellow tones feeling warm and intimate, while blue tones with their feeling of high skies and daylight can be quite invigorating. Light can be used to accent a feature or it can be the feature itself, such as an LED starry sky. 54

What else can you do to create a true spa experience at home? Think about scent. People often include scented candles, but these can quickly become over powering in a small space and they are not always practical in a humid atmosphere. Essence diffusers can be used to great effect and that soothing flicker that we find so comforting can also be found in a natural flame effect candle. I think Radiance, London make some of the best. Consider adding a heated lounger to your spa. Ergonomically designed for maximum comfort, tiled loungers are heated to provide deep warmth for tired muscles. A tiled foot spa, perhaps installed alongside a heated bench, is another great way to relax and adds another dimension to your home spa. Any final tips on creating a home spa? I do hear people say that they don’t use their facilities as much as they would wish, and that’s a terrible shame. The most important part of planning is to think carefully about what will fit in with your lifestyle. No detail is too small. For example, don’t invest in a beautiful steam room with 100 per cent humidity if you have problem hair and go to the hairdressers for a blow dry once a week, because the two don’t mix. Don’t choose a sauna with a wood fired stove if you want to use it on a regular basis after a hard day at work because by the time it reaches optimum temperature you will have fallen asleep. he blossoming of architectural interiors projects from both the commercial and residential markets demanded a new dawn; a new structure. When Stephanie Hill relocated to her new showrooms on the affluent outskirts of Leeds in 2013 she did so with the intention of concentrating on developing her own furniture range. Stephanie’s long term ambition had been to design her own range of elegant contemporary furniture. Her popularity as interior designer however continued to pull her away from her goal; liaising with clients and members of her team over the day to day logistics of business forced Stephanie to look long and hard for a solution that would enable her to drive her furniture brand ‘U Liberty’ & Uffizzi Interiors forward simultaneously.
