The ability to question established ideas is what moves design forward. When we are commissioned to redesign a home interior, we are not constrained by thoughts of what went before. Like this page, we often spin space around. By physically removing walls and challenging mindset we eliminate real and perceived barriers to achieve a sublime balance of function and form. Our knowledge and experience allows us to mix craft skills with the latest techniques, methods and finest materials. Recent projects have seen us turn prestigious properties with uninspiring interiors into sumptuous, opulent places to live. As part of a major up-grade, we are about to enter phase two of the total refurbishment of our current showrooms building in Southport. The project will see the transformation of our kitchen studios into an extended suite, comprising new offices, kitchen sets, from each of our three distinctive brands. Plus eventually, for the first time, our showrooms will feature exquisite, luxury bathrooms and bedrooms on display together with examples from our unique ranges of designer furniture, lighting, mirrors, accessories and more. Please be reassured that during this inevitable period of disruption, we continue to be open as usual and remain committed and busy as ever, working on new and existing commissions. We would like to thank all our clients for bearing with us at this time. To receive an update prior to visiting call 01704 544622.

FEATURE | The Bones of Good Design
While it is important to allow your mind to wander freely in a creative sense, it is also important to recognize that there are certain factors to consider when designing an interior. The physical advantages and disadvantages of the space are one constraint; the needs of the people who inhabit that space are another; budget is a third; time a fourth. The biggest influence, however, will be your own sense of aesthetics. While this is often defined as a certain way of seeing things, it is just as much about how a room enhances mood. By Kelly Hoppen
THE BONES OF GOOD DESIGN I
t helps if you can develop an awareness of the many layers that go into a room. That does not just mean the many decorative ingredients, such as paint, carpet, fabric, lighting and furniture. It is about the aspects of design that are more intangible: symmetry and balance, scale and proportion, creating impact and interesting juxtapositions. THE DESIGN CONCEPT Good design is about focusing on the overall effect of different materials and colours, rather than becoming obsessed by individual elements. Before you tackle the question of how the room you are designing will look, take time to consider how you want it to feel. Forget fabric swatches and paint samples – back to those later – and gather around you images and textures that make you feel happy. Try to capture the sort of mood you would like to reflect in your home. Pin > LUXURY TITLES
17
> them all together onto one board. This sort of
concept board can include any inspiration you like: art postcards, travel photography, lifestyle elements such as cookery or gardening, fashion shoots, jewellery detailing or swatches of vintage fabric. Together these create a visual reminder of what you would like to achieve in this room. The concept board is a benchmark you can return to again and again, so that you do not lose sight of your original inspiration. Do not confuse it with a design board, which is a breakdown of the actual decorative scheme, showing everything from wallpaper, paints and fabrics to furniture shapes, upholstery and accessories. It helps if you feel relaxed when you are designing. Allocate a good chunk of time to the process, put on some music you love, take some deep breaths, and enjoy. Creating your perfect home should be a pleasure, not a penance. Symmetry and Balance If you are lucky enough to have a room that is beautifully symmetrical, then half the battle is won. In truth, few of us are that fortunate. To improve symmetry, use the idea of the grid within design (mentioned in previous issue’s), emphasizing the vertical and horizontal planes to add a sense of order. Try to place a focal point centrally – such as the bed within the bedroom, or the table within the dining room – and work out from this. Vertical lines may be accentuated through high-backed chairs, tall vases or floor-standing lamps. The horizontal might be underlined through low tables, artwork in ‘landscape’ frames or wide pendant lights. Use the grid system to draw attention to those items that are matched by another item – for instance, a pair of console tables, mirrors or chairs. In this way, you will achieve a sense of symmetry even in a room of less than perfect proportions. However, do not restrict yourself to only two of everything. You will end up with a room that looks very dull and predictable if you take the idea of symmetry too far. It is also important to add one or two items that stand alone asymmetrically within the scheme, perhaps an amazing vintage light or a fabulous piece of bespoke furniture. Balance is just as important 18

Walls, ceiling and floor create the basic canvas against which everything is set, as with the specialist plaster finish here used to display art and treasured objects.
Symmetry is a highly effective tool. The alcoves on each side of the fireplace have been fitted with glass shelves for displaying old leather-bound volumes.
Provide balance through different forms and textures. Here masculine velvet armchairs are juxtaposed with a smaller pair in an embroidered geometric print. Make use of scale, both large and small, as with the antique barometer hung next to the large oil painting.
Break the rules by introducing something unexpected. These tall, glass display units are an inspired choice for a collection of antiquarian books. One or two star pieces make an impact. This crystaland-bronze pendant light is the centrepiece around which all pivots.

> as symmetry, so make sure that such pieces find
a visual echo within the room, whether through colour, texture or form. Think of it as the subtle link between the various design ingredients. Scale and Proportion Over-scaling is another wonderful way of improving the intrinsic architecture and ambience of a room. Again, it relates back to the grid system, accentuating either the vertical or horizontal lines within the room. The great thing about over-scaled designs is that you need only one or two to make an impact. Indeed, it is the very fact that the rest of the room sits nicely in proportion that gives over-scaled pieces their theatrical presence. Think of a double-height headboard over a bed, a magnificent antique armoire or a gigantic floor-standing mirror – each becomes a dramatic focal point in a room of similarly scaled objects. What is less well recognized is the use of under-scaling, which is also a useful tool because it adds a note of wit. The under-scaled object does not shriek for attention, but when it is noticed it gives the observer pleasure of a different kind – that of recognizing the detailed thought process that has gone into the space. Under-scaled objects should link in a subtle way to other items within the room, through form, colour or texture. Think of a single perfect bloom in a clear glass vase, for instance, that is reflected in a nearby extravagant floral arrangement, or mother-ofpearl buttons on a single cushion that reference a runner of mother-of pearl Creating Impact Our homes are not just personal places where we eat, sleep and unwind. They are also a public display of our tastes and interests. One of the pleasures of creating a beautiful home is enjoying the reactions of visitors, particularly when they are presented with a ‘Wow!’ moment. Whether we admit it or not, we hope to create an effect that is more than just bland good taste. Great design is also about making an impact. Every room needs a visual surprise or two. When putting together your scheme, layer on a sense of theatre. The star of the show might be a sumptuous fabric, an extravagant surface finish, > 20

Consider how symmetrical the room is and play to its strengths. This room has been furnished so that one side is almost a mirror image of the other.
Buy key pieces of furniture in pairs. This super-size room accommodates pairs of sofas, lamps, coffee tables and ottomans. Even the way cushions are arranged should add to the symmetry in terms of shape, size and embellishment.
Always find a way to then break it up gently. Here, three small creamlacquered drum tables play against the lines of other furniture.
Balancing objects in a display is a talent, made easier here by these glass niches. Choose one type of object for greater impact. Use the grid to underline symmetry, as with the runners on these tables that echo the lines of the floorboards.
> a piece of bespoke furniture, striking artwork or
any other special object. It might take the form of a jolt of bold colour, a wonderful texture, an over-scaled shape or a vintage one-off. What matters is that you love it and are happy for it to take centre stage. If you want to use such a piece for maximum impact, place it in such a way that it can be seen from other areas within the house – creating internal vistas is key to creating a wonderful home. Or you might prefer to give no indication of its presence until someone walks through the door, increasing the sense of drama. Think not only of where it is best placed within a room, but also with what it should be juxtaposed to increase its visual impact. Build it into your lighting scheme, so that you can ensure it is shown to best advantage at all times. The secret is not to clutter the space with too much else. Star pieces need room to breathe, which is why one per room is usually enough. Think of them as the extroverts of your decorating scheme – the big personalities around which all else revolves. When a pioneering Wiltshire based kitchen factory lay dormant after becoming a victim of the economic downturn, a group of 8 friends re-opened the doors and formed McCarron & Co, a brand new production company.
Yorkshire based Stephen Neall and McCarron & Co Wiltshire became bonded by a common goal to design and make beautiful furniture. At a time when others stood still, Stephen Neall were busy creating a new high street showroom and a furniture collection incorporating the latest technologies, higher production quality and better standards, thus raising the bar in luxury kitchens. The decision to completely replace the original Stephen Neall showroom, established in 1982, on Prince Albert Row in Harrogate, was a bold move incorporating dramatic changes.
“Innovative furniture of uncompromising quality” The total refurbishment, including shop frontage restoration to a classic period style, and reinstatement of the original Victorian high ceilings, has created a gallery style studio that is bright and welcoming. McCarron & Co by Stephen Neall is the only northern flagship store to present this exciting collection of high quality English kitchen furniture, supported by premium appliance brands Miele, Wolf and Sub Zero.
Inspired by the kitchen at Hampton Court Palace Inspiration for the furniture styles came from various sources. Our Hampton kitchen window display was inspired by the kitchen at Hampton Court, where the iconic giant fireplace is not only a focal point, but the hub of cooking in this historic palace. Our Modena kitchen display with oversized hand cast aluminium handles, was inspired by an exquisite collection of silver plated cutlery by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, pieces of which are now showcased in a glass display box within the display itself. There are many product highlights for us to be excited about and for our customers to enjoy.
Visiting the showroom will always leave you with a sparkle of the team’s infectious enthusiasm. When you combine the dedication and creativity of the design team at the Stephen Neall Group, with the quality and superior branding of our partners McCarron & Co kitchen furniture, you have a strength that is difficult to match and is unlikely to be beaten.

The Stephen Neall Group was established 30 years ago, as a dedicated studio for premium kitchen design in Harrogate. With a natural instinct for design and for business development, the company soon began creating full house interiors. The Poliform part of the journey started some 10 years ago when business owner Stephen Gee had the vision to develop, but needed a property big enough for his ambition, and an international brand that offered day and night furniture with uncompromising quality and at the forefront of lifestyle trends. This vision has now become a reality, with the opening of The Factory building and the launch of the only UK Poliform/Varenna flagship store outside London. Poliform North has been a real labour of love for the whole team including designers, management staff and sub contractors. Ever since the original showroom was opened on Station Parade, The Factory building has been temptingly tucked away down the back of Station Parade, always of interest not only for the expansion of the company, but for the chance to bring life back into a tired building that was once a thriving depot for Craven Dairy. When it came up for sale in 2008 Stephen knew that, having missed the opportunity to buy for £68,000 in 1989, this time must have it and began to relish the challenge of transforming it into what you see today. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s 1960’s studio in New York, of the same name, the Factory in Harrogate is a place for inspiration and a perfect meeting venue for clients, designers and

architects. The 9000 sq ft historic building has been converted into a cool contemporary oasis on 3 floor levels, overlooking the main railway line to Kings Cross London, and only metres away from the railway station. The store truly has an urban buzz, demonstrating the ability of the Stephen Neall team, but more so the essence of the Poliform brand. Visitors can meander through a series of room sets featuring kitchens, wardrobes (including walk-in), sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, beds and accessories.
Poliform North showcases a luxury complete home experience In a truly unique environment, the showroom style is unlike most furniture stores and has been described by management from Italy as one of the top 5 Poliform stores in the world. The layout is graphic and atmospheric, accessorised in a precise and ordered way.
“One of the finest showrooms in the world” As part of a genuine family business, it is evident that the team members of The Stephen Neall Group, dedicate their lives to preaching the modern lifestyle. Bridging the gap between the architect and the interior designer, their reputation has enabled them to trade almost exclusively on repeat business and word of mouth for over thirty years, a testament to the passion, the dedication and the reliability of this team. Their boundless enthusiasm for the business and the new Poliform North project is infectious.

Individual bathrooms... ...beautifully designed
Attention is increasingly being focused on the bathroom. On matters of architecture, design and technology, as well as on its status as a place of revitalisation, as somewhere to pause and retreat. The focus is on the rituals and sequences (actions) of the particular individual. At a cultural level and at a technological level. We do this, so that the insights and knowledge we have gained can be incorporated in our work, and thus into your bathroom or your spa.

CREATING HARMONY 86

The vision of one top designer transforms a once cluttered house into a flowing holistic space of quietly contemporary style.
I
t was the glorious location of this period stone village house which eclipsed any of the drawbacks of its higgledypiggledy purchase condition according to its buyers, originally from London. Rather than a weekend cottage, the couple had always wanted to find a home where the whole family – including their two children and three, soon to be four, grandchildren could all come together to spend quality time, so there was much to consider in their purchase brief. Since carrying out significant renovations with the help of interior designer Pippa Paton, it has now become the house where the owners really feel at home, now preferring the quietude of North Oxfordshire over the hubbub of the capital. Originally the house comprised two separate stone cottages; well over a decade ago the dwellings were amalgamated and then substantially added to on an ad hoc basis, creating a single, but somewhat fragmented, abode. While the intentions of previous owners were good, the work had been executed without much finesse, spatial awareness or concept of flow. Undeterred by the rather confused living accommodation which the property offered, however, the current owners decided that there was enough potential here to satisfy their
brief – with both sufficient internal space and a unique vista of beautiful Cotswold countryside which was hard to turn down. Happy with their acquisition, the couple set about planning how to turn the house into the kind of peaceful bucolic haven they had long dreamed of while immersed full-time in the buzz of city life. Their house in London had an uncluttered classic contemporary feel which they felt comfortable with – clean and flowing, yet not overtly ‘cutting edge’ or masculine, filled with muted tones, easy on the eye. In its pre-sale condition, however, their new country residence did not match these aesthetic tastes in any way. Painted consistently throughout in either cream or yellow, the property offered little by way of visual interest internally – contemporary it was not, yet neither did it fall into any kind of chintzy cliché. Quickly realising they could use a bit of help in bringing the rather bland interior inline with their tastes the couple started an internet-based search of local design firms to approach. Pippa Paton Design, based in Longworth, was one of the companies which popped up courtesy of Google. Particularly liking the use of colour they saw on the website, www.pippapatondesign.co.uk - the couple placed the company on their shortlist and asked Pippa to meet with them. LUXURY TITLES
87
Pippa’s design credentials include a prestigious Andrew Martin Design Review Award, but successful relationships of any kind are created more by chemistry than reputation and when she arrived at the house, the rapport with the couple proved instant and Pippa was hired on the spot: “We just hit it off straightaway – our tastes are very in-tune – they said that even what I was wearing helped confirm that I w ould deliver what they were looking for!” she reports of that first meeting. Initially, the couple presented the house to Pippa as a large decorating project to create an internal style which reflected their tastes. “I said yes, absolutely no problem, I could easily come up with a decorating scheme tailored for them – I understood completely the contemporary eclecticism they liked – not traditional Cotswold country and not London come to the Cotswolds, but then as we talked about basing their life in this house, the family coming to stay and gradually took in more of the detail, we all realised that what was really needed here was more than superficial decorating work,” explains Pippa. Because the house had been extended piecemeal over the years, little thought had been given to the flow of accommodation; added to which, the overall standard of workmanship was poor: “An amazing amount of space was taken up with tiny corridors, bits of panelling to cover pipework and odd cupboards here and there; most of the bedrooms had had corners cut off to accommodate en-suite bathrooms and there was a host of mismatched features left over from the numerous extensions which were jarring to the eye. I thought overall the house was a terrific purchase – full of potential, but the space inside was terribly disjointed. Before we did any redecorating, we needed to address the key issue of space management,” Pippa recalls. 88

FEATURE | CREATING HARMONY
“We planned every detail on paper down to the position of the last electrical socket so our clients could be sure of what they were getting”
Although the couple had started off essentially looking for an interior decorator, their instincts that Pippa was the right person for the job bore fruit as it became apparent that more than a lick of paint and new soft furnishings would be required. With Scott Paton, her husband and business partner, Pippa offers a complete interior architecture, design and project management service, covering every last detail of a build or renovation project, including external landscaping and swimming pools, and so the couple were able to use Pippa Paton Design for the entire scope of the project. The starting point was to look at the layout of the rooms to see how this could be improved. “There were no planning issues here, so our only restrictions at the outset were the number of people to accommodate and obviously our clients’ budget. We planned every detail on paper down to the position of the last electrical socket so our clients could be sure of what they were getting” says Pippa. “Before you can get to the
detail, ‘though, you’ve obviously got to be absolutely clear of the overall picture, which sometimes involves taking bigger, less than obvious decisions. One of the earliest conclusions we reached, for instance, was that in order to restore the bedrooms to the sizes they should be, rather than the oddly shaped rooms with corners missing which they currently were, we would take out all the small ensuite bathrooms, replacing them with one large family bathroom. In the new scheme, only the master and guest bedrooms would have ensuites. This was a much more practical solution given how the house was to be used and meant that everyone got a lovely bedroom where everything could be in its rightful place. The order of things is crucial in making a room pleasant to live in – that’s why symmetry is one of the founding architectural principles – the eye finds symmetrical arrangements restful. If the only place for a bed is half under the window, for instance, this is not restful on the eye!”

Downstairs, the room layout was more or less ok, but there was definite scope for improvement. “We made a list of everything which was not functioning properly or had been poorly executed and then went about fixing it in the most economical way without compromising on quality,” says Scott. “Included on our list were the flagstones which ran through the house – they were in a pretty bad state but the budget did not facilitate replacing them so I found craftsmen to renovate them and we had them re-grouted in a paler colour – essentially creating a new floor.” Initially they had planned to keep the kitchen as it was but decided that it too needed to be refreshed in order to create the consistency of style and space they were looking for. Traditional painted wooden units were transformed to create a quietly contemporary kitchen with judicious use of lime green to provide lift. Some clever
“We design almost all of our own furniture and use local craftsmen to make it – each room within each project is very much a bespoke piece of detailed design.”
cabinetry work has created more cupboard space whilst streamlining the appearance of the room: “We’ve managed to create a very spacious looking kitchen despite increasing the size of all the furniture within”, explains Pippa. Decoratively, the house now flows, both in terms of colour and furnishings. “I’ve used a different colour for each room,” says Pippa. “They are all neutral shades of grey/ stone/taupe which I have then often supplemented with a small splash of colour – like the green in the kitchen and the warm reds and oranges in the main sitting room. Using texture to create interest is really my thing – too much colour can detract from, rather than enhance a room, whereas layers of texture add depth and interest, appealing in a much more sensory, timeless way. As well as carefully selected artefacts which I source from all over the world, the fabrics I use are a key factor in texturing a room – I am constantly searching for new and unusual fabrics to add interest and originality. We design almost all of our own furniture and use local craftsmen to make it – each room within each project is very much a bespoke piece of detailed design.” The final part of the renovations, though not pictured here, involved the external landscaping of the grounds, incorporating a new swimming pool and terrace, which Scott project-managed: “The great benefit in
being able to tackle all aspects of a project is that we can deliver a much more harmonious end result”, he explains. “Of course the other significant benefit for the client is on the budgeting front as a more co-ordinated approach ensures that the budget is distributed to where it is most needed. Pippa is genius at understanding that not all rooms are created equal yet some need more attention than their size suggests. The downstairs loo is a case in point – the one room in the house almost all your visitors will use and yet often one of the most neglected. At this house Pippa has managed to turn a pokey little cloakroom into something rather exotic and wonderful that everyone loves – it’s all about a combining pragmatism and logic with imagination”. pippa@pippapatondesign.co.uk 01993 220721 or 07836793624 www.pippapatondesign.co.uk
