Welcome to the new issue of exciting destinations! We are thrilled to invite you to give yourself the gift of travel. Whether you are planning a large destination wedding, a small romantic getaway or are looking to share an exciting adventure with your family—we have reviewed some amazing places to jumpstart your inspiration. Experience is what people value most during their travel. Because our team has visited every place we are featuring in this publication, it has been exciting to work on this issue. The locations we have experienced will leave you with longlasting memories and the desire to explore the world even more. We focus on destinations readers have expressed greater interest in. We explored a wide range of places including Italy, Mexico, India, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Let it be known, a night at the Ice Hotel will be difficult to top and the four beautiful Sardinian venues have given us an experience of the Sardinian culture, wine and food.

Join the Cabo Sky Tours which provide you unmatched thrill that is hard to find elsewhere! While many of us love to snorkel and explore sea life from the boat, the best whale watching we have ever done is from that ultralight glider. Palazzo Gattini offers guests sweeping views of Sassi Matera. And, the hotel is just a few steps away from many of the most important landmarks and monuments of Matera, both UNESCO heritage and elected cultural capital for 2019.

Nicole Flanagan is an international speaker and has been featured in numerous international publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Expensive Pleasure and more. Nicole is known for helping wedding and lifestyle businesses to obtain international publicity and open new opportunities worldwide. Nicole is also the founder of the American Wedding Academy which provides educational courses to wedding professionals in the Russian language. Nicole Flanagan has a B.S. in Computer Science from the Purdue University School of Science and a Master of Science in Strategic Management as well as an MBA from the Indiana University School of Business.

Helsinki’s Hotel Kamp is for those who want to be a part of history, Lapland’s Camp Ripan will give you astonishing opportunities to view the Northern Lights, and the Raj Palace is a true Jewel of the Pink City. Additionally, Grand Hotel is in the heart of Oslo and proudly hosts the winners of the Peace Prize. We know you will enjoy not only reading about these beautiful destinations, but also planning your next exciting adventure. We would also love to hear from you about the places that are most curious about so we can add those adventures to future publications. Nicole Flanagan

The story of the hotel began with a revolutionary idea. In the 1960s, Peppeddu Palimodde began serving local cuisine close to the Su Gologone Spring: he was responsible for bringing the Supramonte region out of historical isolation. «When we were engaged,» recalls his wife, Pasqua, «Peppeddu wanted to do something to celebrate the land he loved. He thought opening a restaurant was the perfect way to do this. When we returned from our honeymoon, he’d convinced me it was a good idea.»

In 1967, Oliena’s first ever restaurant, Su Gologone, opened its doors. No one could have predicted that the simple food locals cooked every day would have such an impact. The restaurant was such a success that the Palimodde family opened a small hotel to accommodate the stream of visitors arriving from abroad to taste their cuisine. Slowly, tourists were realizing there was a different Sardinia to be discovered beyond the island’s beautiful beaches. Each suite and room is uniquely decorated—there is so much love and care in every corner of the hotel.

OF: Federica, your masterclasses have proven to be a magnet for aspiring wedding florists, as well as for accomplished wedding professionals. Bridal magazines are striving to obtain your work and your masterclasses are creating a beautiful splash in every area where you hold your stunning educational events. What is your secret? FA: (laughing) Thank you for this compliment! It’s really difficult to explain what I feel when I work and teach. I have a lot of passion for what I do and I think this is what is playing the biggest role in the success of my masterclasses. Our well-tested format for these events have proven to be working because we are reaching the right people who want to get together to learn, to get inspired and to create something unique based on my vision and the participants’ input. It’s just amazing how many wedding professionals come together, novice or experienced, to create something unique. They spend several days together sharing ideas and learning new approaches.

Expert Spotlight 418

OF: Who is the audience for your masterclasses? FA: Our goal is to get together and to collaborate with all types of wedding professionals: wedding planners, floral designers and photographers. We welcome every wedding professional who is looking for more experience working on high-end events so that they can attract more of this type of work for their business. There is a lot to learn not only from the masterclass, but from each of the attendees who is sharing other experiences with their colleagues.

Expert Spotlight 420

OF: Why did you decide to hold your masterclass in Matera, Italy? FA: We were planning to create a scenic floral design in an exclusive location. After the massive success of my previous masterclasses that were held in picturesque cities such as Rome and Venice, our 9th masterclass was held in the magical setting of the City of Matera, both UNESCO heritage and elected cultural capital for 2019. In the amazing Piazza del Duomo, overlooking the «Città dei Sassi,” 25 participants, with the precious support of professional suppliers, gave life to this luxurious project: over 10,000 flowers were used, a world-renowned band came from Prague, and we paid great attention to every detail, light and color, which made this masterclass unique in its kind.

OF: What was your inspiration for the event? FA: For this particular masterclass I was supported by Elisa Mocci, international wedding designer, who held a one-day class on event designing. We were also so lucky to have incredible support by «Novia Weddings,” who helped us realize such a special event in a location where an event of such magnitude never took place before. Only a unique city such as Matera — one of the most ancient cities of the world — with its natural caves dug directly in the bare rock and its rocky panoramas could have lit the spark of desire in my imagination to create such a contrast between the city’s rural rocky history and contemporary glamour. The contrast between dark rocks and the bright extravagant colors of the chosen flowers, between the ancient Cathedral and the modern crystal marquise, are the extreme modern elements that characterized the staging of the final evening gala. I am so pleased how amazingly well it all went together.

422

LUXURY Wedding & Style With Nicole Flanagan | issue 2019 Destinations

OF: What unique opportunities did the participants experience during this event? How was the event structured? What should your future participants expect from your masterclass? FA: All our participants had the opportunity to actually assist and contribute to the realization of this event in its entirety—from beginning to end—together with some of the most renowned Italian professionals of the industry. I personally illustrated my approach to the floral art world, and supporting directly every single attendee, passing on all my knowledge of floral design. I also gave tips and advice on problem solving and stress management, which is essential when organizing large events with a high budget. OF: What are your plans for the future? FA: My goals and objectives for the future are always the same: to continue to propose new ideas and innovative inspirations for the Italian and international market, continuing the constant research of new styles, and flower and color combinations that are always avant garde.

Expert Spotlight 424

OF: Your masterclasses are always full and sell out quickly. Why are these wedding professionals so eager to participate in your events? FA: The biggest reason is that this is not a theoretical class where one just reads a textbook. We are providing an invaluable experience for our participants where they can express their vision, they can learn from other colleagues and they get a real feel for what it’s like to work on a high budget event. They have the possibility to participate directly to the realization of a luxury event in an exclusive location, increase their own social network, enjoy the conclusive gala evening, add on to their cultural exposure and to simply have a good time while learning! OF: What would be your most important advice for wedding professionals? FA: Never lose your curiosity. In this particular industry, it is of utmost importance to continue to research new inspirational trends while always being yourself. It is crucial to believe in what you do and in your capabilities while taking creative risks and striving to be original.

Every couple wants to be heard. They want to be understood by their floral designer so they can tell the unique story of their love. What is your process to make your clients’ dreams a reality and to then exceed their expectations?

I

It’s all about communication. I tell each client’s story through the language of flowers— I am their personal poet. In my work, the client is my focus, and their vision is brought to life through artistry and craftsmanship.

How does the vision develop while you are creating such unique realities for each different client?

I

I go with the flow and guide my clients on an esthetical basis—this is why they hired me. My clients understand that building a design concept is a process. I tend to ask a lot of questions during this process: who, what, where and what? What is the timeline and the budget, and what mood are they looking to be expressed during their event? This is vital information in order to get in touch with the client’s expectations, vision and feel of the event. The color palette plays a big role in how we communicate the mood. After engaging with a client on a personal level and after we define their unique needs, we start to design, and we work on how to best express the client’s ideas in the language of flowers.

You are known to be an exceptionally empathetic professional who follows a human-centric design process. Why is this so important, especially at the level of collaborations you are accustomed to?

Empathy allows design thinkers to set aside their own assumptions about the world in order to gain insight into clients and their needs. The reason clients hire me is because of my approach. As a bespoke designer, I turn myself away from mass displays with no personality to create a tailored event. I pinpoint the unique needs of clients and gain inspiration from their stories, transforming their elusive and abstract ideas into an expression of their unique personalities in a uniform and creative way. Every human being is unique. Why should a floral design be any different?

We know that you dare to be proactive with your clients by sharing your expertise and knowledge to make them see creative expressions of their vision. How do you accomplish such amazing connection that instills so much trust from the people you are creating the designs for?

I

It really starts with basic human communication. We always encourage an open dialogue and different opinions so we can implement our floral installations that consider all aspects of the event. It all starts with a conversation to understand a client, to show my expertise as a designer and to provide ideas that implement each client’s wishes esthetically into my designs. Sharing my knowledge and guiding the client to the outcome of their dream wish is vital when communicating. We do not sell fixed template designs, nor do we sell the same flowers for each event as everyone is different as it is built on the DNA—the unique vision—of the client. Clients approach me because they know my field of expertise; events with an exclusive, luxurious experience through architectural floral splendor. We focus on tailor-made designs of the unique visions of our clients, who include top 10 wealthy families worldwide, royal families, upscale event agencies and luxury brands.

What is your opinion on trends? How much do you follow trends and what do you advise your clients as far as trying to be trendy?

B

Being a floral event designer means I should know more than only how to arrange flowers in an attractive way. My work demands a significant knowledge of what “is in at any given time throughout many industries. I have never made a floral installation based solely on what is trendy, but we have gathered inspiration from current trends for details such as colors and form. In other words, trends should create inspiration, and are not be simply followed!

Individuality is becoming more and more important in this industry, and this results in creating personal trends as well as worldwide or localized, regional trends. I work closely with a renowned company located in Belgium that comes up with trends based on thorough research of many industries: international furniture, wallpaper, cars, lighting, carpet, and even banking. With this knowledge, we have the diverse expertise in understanding the current trends in colors and materials, trends in flowers, knowledge of local and global flora, design of unique exclusive constructions, interior design, high-tech construction and customer contact. Our passion for the profession means that we are invited to be guest speakers at seminars and to speak to the press.

How do you express the couple’s DNA — their unique vision — through the flower design created just for them?

W

We get to know our clients, their needs, their wishes, their style, their preferences and expectations down to the smallest detail. We offer them stylish, elegant unique solutions for their exclusive, prestige event. The customer is involved in the entire process. There is a huge difference between guiding the couple through their dream or just telling them what style they have to go with based on my opinion. We are all different, and we strongly believe this should be reflected in the design for every single event, for every single client. We often say that we create “DNA events” because we do just that— we customize the florals to our clients’ DNA, the DNA of their dreams and desires, the DNA of their history and future aspirations. People have always had an emotional relationship with flowers and nature itself and it’s up to me to figure out the artistic expression of that particular client’s dream so we can speak in the flower language that each client deserves. Finding the right rapport, trust and minimizing risk for our client is important to us. We see each flower’s personality and match it to our client’s avatar. I would advise each person to ask themselves a question, “What is your favorite flower and why?” You will be surprised with your response mostly because you may not be able to interpret your answer. Speaking in the language of flowers, I can easily interpret and explain why that particular flower is matching your personality. It all starts with the strong visual language of color, followed by form and its masculine or feminine elements, and last but not least, the flower itself (and its trendy character). I am excited to work with every client to take them on this amazing journey to figure out the deepest meaning of their floral preferences. photo | Tanuj Bhatia Set Design | Scenografia Sumant Floral Design | Tomas De Bruyne Management | E-factor Entertainment Location | Calcutta – India

This is absolutely fascinating! Please tell me about your own floral journey — what parts of your experience are enriching your clients’ events?

O

Our target group is the client who lives life to the fullest and would like to express their experiences in life through floral architecture. We give our clients a unique floral customized concept, represented by mood boards and sketches. We push the boundaries of the possible, and we are proud to say that because of their innovative character, our architectural floral designs set the trend for other designers.

You have been working all over the world — what differences have you noticed as far as trends, clients and events?

T

This difference is huge. Every culture has it’s own focus concerning color, form, flowers and traditions. I explore the international differences in clients and what is desirable, and being open to this enriches me not only as a designer, but as person as well. I do realize this is one of my strengths—being in touch with global design as well as having a great deal of international experience on a personal level with my clients. It allows me each day to grow and to borrow from each culture, meaning that I am happy to incorporate the intangible details of the world to help express my clients’ vision.

For the luxury event to go smoothly, it is very important for all event partners to work together in a collaborative way. How do you connect with these partners that are responsible for other parts of the event to ensure that you are working as one?

photo | Tanuj Bhatia Set Design | Scenografia Sumant Floral Design | Tomas De Bruyne Management | E-factor Entertainment Location | Calcutta – India

G

Good communication is essential when engaging with your clients, and the follow-up communication is just as important. You have to work in a team to achieve the best outcome. It’s not a one-man show, but the result of any element which gives the highest gestalt to an event.

Expert Spotlight 474

You are a preferred floral partner for many international wedding professionals. How did you accomplish such incredible trust from these experts?

T

Thank you and yes, we are a worldwide reference for turning exclusive luxury events into magical experiences with architectural floral grandeur. We work as a preferred floral partner of luxury event agencies, brands and royal or wealthy families. Good cooperation with our partners is crucial to continue the concept and the experience in all elements of the event. This is why we share a script-book with our partners. Here is one simple example: elements as color have to be shared with the lighting designers as they can bring to life our floral color concept. Working together works in both directions as we may work closely with each partner, receiving or sharing input as we both are working for the same goal: creating a bespoke magical experience! The elegant designs should enhance the theme of the event and create a sensory sensation.
