MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN RECENTLY ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF PSYCHEDELIC AND ONEIROGENIC PLANT MEDICINES IN TREATING MENTAL HEALTH, BEHAVIORAL, AND SUBSTANCE ADDICTION ISSUES. HOWEVER, ONE SUCH MEDICINE, IBOGAINE – AN ALKALOID EXTRACTED FROM THE WEST AFRICAN SHRUB TABERNANTHE IBOGA – HAS, UNFAIRLY, IF NOT SURPRISINGLY, RECEIVED A BAD RAP. ADMINISTERED AT A HOLISTIC DETOX CLINIC IN PORTUGAL – TABULA RASA RETREAT – MY IBOGAINE TREATMENT ALLOWED ME A PAIN-FREE DETOX FROM OPIATES, PROVIDING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL INSIGHT NEEDED TO CURB MY ADDICTIVE IMPULSES AND HEAL FROM PAST TRAUMAS THAT HAVE SHAPED MY SELFPERCEPTION AND INTERNAL NARRATIVES SINCE THE AGE OF 12.
IN OTHER WORDS, THIS PIECE IS ABOUT THE DAY I WAS, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, «LOBOTOMIZED» BY A PLANT.
By Pedro Gorman
IIn West Africa, the Bwiti tribes of Gabon have long used the psychoactive Iboga shrub in shamanic rituals. Its root bark contains Ibogaine, an alkaloid distinct from psychedelics like ayahuasca or psilocybin, inducing an oneirogenic state that resembles lucid dreaming for about 24 hours, offering hyper-realistic visions from one’s subconscious.
Ibogaine effectively treats substance abuse, PTSD, anhedonia, and chronic depression by confronting personal traumas and revealing the roots of addictive behaviors. It uniquely facilitates painfree detox from opiates, cocaine, and methamphetamines, allowing one to emerge from a 48-hour treatment without withdrawal symptoms.
While its mechanism for rewiring the brain remains under study, Ibogaine is known to reset dopamine and serotonin levels, mitigating depression and drug cravings for months and thus aiding life restructuring.
Despite these benefits, Ibogaine faces legality issues in many countries due to concerns about cardiac and liver risks. This contrasts with the legal status of potentially harmful and addictive pharmaceuticals like benzodiazepines and opioids.
MMainstream science often acknowledges that Ibogaine complications mainly arise with pre-existing liver or heart conditions, particularly if treatment lacks medical supervision.
At Tabula Rasa Retreat in Portugal, where drug decriminalization occurred in 2001 and Ibogaine is unregulated, client safety is a priority. The retreat features a fully-trained medical team with ECG monitors and defibrillators. Clients undergo a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, a Resting ECG, and a stress test to verify heart health before treatment, proceeding only after clear test results and a successful Ibogaine test dose.
I learned about the retreat from a high school friend, Sebastiano, whose brother Alvaro de Ferranti founded it in 2018. Reconnecting with Sebastiano this summer, while struggling with sobriety and a challenging job, led to his suggestion of contacting Alvaro.
Upon arriving, I was warmly greeted by the whole team, and we proceeded to my room. Nena, one of the nurses, searched, catalogued, and stored all my belongings except for clothes, toiletries, my books, and my journal. I then took a urine test to determine which substances I had recently consumed. I tested positive only for opioids.
Following the intake process, we all gathered for lunch. Joining me for treatment that week were Petter, Dora, Lewis, Alexandra, Yolanda, Tareeq, and Jerzy. We went around the table, each of us introducing ourselves and sharing what we hoped to heal from. I was astonished by the diversity of backgrounds these fellow psychonauts came from.
Petter, a Swedish man in his late forties, was a serial entrepreneur who owned upwards of 20 companies. He was there to heal from his addiction to cocaine and alcohol.
Alexandra and Lewis were a couple from Oxford, England. Lewis, a property developer, sought to halt his cocaine and alcohol addiction, while his partner Alexandra, a yoga instructor and retreat organizer, sought healing from the emotional distress caused by Lewis’s addiction.
Yolanda, a woman in her early 30s working in tech development at gov-
ernmental levels, was there to address a multitude of issues, ranging from workaholism to sexual abuse.
Tareeq, a restaurant owner in his 40s, was grappling with burnout and heroin addiction, as well as the challenges of being a single parent.
Dora, a doctor from Germany in her fifties, aimed to end her addiction to opioids.
And Jerzy, a truck driver from Poland in his 30s, sought to release his traumas and overcome multiple addictions.
I introduced myself, explaining that I was there to overcome my dependency on the long-acting opiate buprenorphine and curb my alcohol and benzodiazepine addictions. I also wanted to release the shame surrounding a couple of instances of sexual trauma.
The first group session was a fascinating take on the healing journey with plant medicines, drawing upon Joseph Campbell’s monomyth of the «Hero’s Journey.» This led to a discussion about Ibogaine, where we were informed that, no matter how miraculous the media might portray it, Ibogaine would not magically solve our problems. Instead, it would shine a light on what we needed to address and the changes we needed to make in our respective lives.
When it comes to plant medicines, intentions are crucial. An intention, in this context, is a specific aspect of ourselves we wish to explore further or a request for assistance in healing a particular issue.
As an example, my initial intention was «Please help me stop my addictive patterns.» However, upon further reflection that day, I realized I was focusing on a symptom rather than the root cause. So, I revised it to «Show me the source of my
pain and sadness, and help me to thrive, not just survive.»
Then, as a symbolic act, we were invited to read our intentions aloud to the group and then burn them one by one. This ritual is significant as it represents openness. While it's beneficial to have an intention to guide the experience, it's equally important to let go of any expectations. Ibogaine often reveals what you need to see, rather than what you want to see.
TThe last session of the day, before dinner, was an extended, hour-plus-long holotropic breathwork session. Alvaro explained that this was not only beneficial for the breathwork itself but also served as a trauma release exercise. Additionally, it acted as a trust-building exercise between us, the clients, and Tabula Rasa Retreat. He emphasized that through Ibogaine, we would ingest a substance that might be uncomfortable and challenging, but that it would pass and the team would be there to support us.
Alvaro then introduced us to «sananga,» a herbal medicine made from the roots and bark of the Tabernanthe Undulata shrub, a relative of the Tabernanthe Iboga shrub but native to the Amazon rainforest. The medicine is typically administered as eye drops and is known for its potent effects on vision, energy, and perception. And yes, it stings – a lot – but is 100% safe. As we opened our eyes and blink-
Ted, a searing, burning sensation engulfed both of my eyes. I focused on the fast-paced circular breathing and concentrated solely on the bodily sensations, repeating to myself, «It's going to get better.» Through the technique of deep circular breathing in the breathwork session, we built up pressure in our bodies. Then, at specific moments, we were encouraged to scream as loud as we could. It wasn't just a short «aaaaah,» but a loud, long bellow from the depths of our pain reserves.
Every inch of my body tingled with electricity, and with each scream, tears flowed freely. There is something profound about being in a room with seven other strangers, all of us shouting, weeping, and breathing through our own levels of personal pain.
At the end of the session, all seven of us felt as though we had been hit by a freight train of sensations and emotions, yet we all felt much lighter for having gone through it.
Tuesday
The next morning, Neal, the head nurse at Tabula Rasa Retreat, detailed the precise procedure of our treatment. We would start with a test dose of Ibogaine, then wait for an hour. After this period, we would each be connected to our individual EKG machines. Assuming our hearts reacted well to the initial test dose, we would move forward with the treatment.
I was warned to brace for some nausea and possibly even purging. Additionally, Ibogaine was likely to impair my mobility, as it could cause a temporary condition known as «ataxia,» affecting my arms and legs. In light of this, if I required assistance going to or returning from the bathroom, the nurses would be readily available to help.
SSettled in the luxurious, soft bed of my room at Tabula Rasa Retreat, I waited as the capsules dissolved in my stomach. The first visuals manifested through a corolla of light fluttering behind my closed eyelids.
A low, droning hum of white noise commenced, accompanied by distant chanting. It took a few minutes to realize the sound was inside my head.
In the near distance, I discerned movement. Soon, it became clear: about five or six men were chanting and dancing around an open fire. The images were incredibly clear, crisp, three-dimensional, and lifelike.
The face of an African shaman rose from the flames. As he opened his mouth, his lips drawing back and wrapping around the back of his head, the face came towards me with a giant, gaping mouth. I bolted upright in bed, feeling myself being swallowed.
Emerging on the other side, the ship wheel hung on the bedroom wall, spinning so fast it became a blur of crackling blue light, then seemed to come off the wall and settle horizontally in front of me, slowing down. I was now looking at a small, circular amphitheater with stage curtains at the back.
Two cartoonish figures ran center stage from each side, took a bow, and drew back what seemed like red velvet curtains. I laughed and whispered, «Wow!»
A small hole opened in the ceiling of my room, which I could somehow see through closed eyes, and lines started emerging from
it. I shuddered in anticipation, not knowing what was coming.
They appeared to be roots, extending across the ceiling and down the wall. They crept up the bed, and I clearly saw the soles of my feet open multiple little mouths, where each of the tendrils and taproots entered my body.
I could feel the plant making its way up my legs, as if under my skin; my whole body rippled with electricity. I recall checking with my hands for any movement under the skin. Once I realized it was all part of the visions, I put my blindfold back on and focused on the dimly lit amphitheater.
On the left, two skeletons were poised for a game of chess with a young boy, who was the twelve-year-old me.
I was playing with the smaller skeleton while the taller one loomed behind it, occasionally pointing an accusatory bony finger at the young me.
After a few moves, the taller skeleton leaned down, picked up a bishop, and executed a blatantly cheating move to knock off my queen. The twelve-year-old me stood up, kicked the board into the ether, and a cartoon-type character carrying a scythe swooped down on a rope and decapitated the taller skeleton, whose head rolled off to the side.
The young me then started dancing joyously with the other smaller skeleton. The ship wheel began spinning so fast that it created
a twister that sucked up the smaller skeleton, despite my young self’s best efforts to hold on. The wheel slowed, and the image directly in front of me, on one of the spokes, presented a stunning, rugged mountain landscape.
Willing myself into the image, I flew over mountains, volcanoes, swamps, and dense rainforests. I was struck by an intense feeling of belonging, but also of newness – the newness of planet Earth billions of years ago, long before sentient life on land.
When I was airborne, I noticed I had what seemed like 360º vision in all directions at once. It was as if I were a giant eyeball that could see everything around it simultaneously, which was as disorienting as it sounds.
Suddenly, I felt myself hurtling towards a rolling, tumultuous ocean at breakneck speed, as if I were a meteorite.
I hit the water’s surface with a loud smack, floating down to the ocean floor, deep into the absence of light, past strange, Paleozoic-era underwater beasts
that looked at me with non-menacing curiosity.
Wondering what this had to do with the origins of my pain and traumas, I heard a high-pitched whirring sound inside my skull, followed by taps, clicks, and radio static. A voice seemed to be trying to come through the static in an unrecognizable language.
This new language was translated into a thought in my mind right after the buzzing stopped.
«You don’t need to interpret any of this right now. All you need to do is lie back and relax. Enjoy the entertainment while we clean you out.»
Feeling a wave of warmth wash over me, I felt a deep sense of love. It felt as if the plant itself had spoken to me. It knew what it was doing, and I trusted it implicitly.
At one point, I felt as if my brain had been plugged into an electrical socket for a serious defragging. Sparks crackled inside my skull, and it was as if I could feel my synapses firing.
Wednesday
OOnce I fully recovered from the less pleasant effects of the Ibogaine – specifically, the purging and ataxia (intense dizziness and difficulty moving) – I felt exhilarated and completely renewed. In less than
forty-eight hours, this intelligent, generous teacher plant had provided me with not only a completely pain-free opiate withdrawal but also prompted some profound introspection.
Once I fully recovered from the less pleasant effects of the Ibogaine – specifically, the purging and ataxia (intense dizziness and difficulty moving) – I felt exhilarated and completely renewed. In less than forty-eight hours, this intelligent, generous teacher plant had provided me with not only a completely pain-free opiate withdrawal but also prompted some profound introspection.
The account above omits much for the sake of brevity but highlights some pivotal moments, which I shall now explore in detail.
Regarding the vision of the 12-year-old me, Ibogaine transported me back to one of my two major traumas, which paved the way for all my subsequent addictions and fear of attachment.
When I was 12, my parents had a live-in housekeeper, Elisabete, and her son Rodrigo, also 12 years old (both names have been changed). Rodrigo and I would grow increasingly close, eventually becoming romantically and sexually involved – a mutual decision. However, our relationship was not the source of my trauma.
When his mother discovered the nature of our relationship, she concealed it from my parents but harbored a muted, seething hatred towards me, evident whenever we were alone. Her visceral reaction and the subsequent ban on my contact with Rodrigo, though they lived in the same house as me, deeply tainted my self-image. They left soon after, citing «problems back home» for my mother. Even at the age of twelve, I recall seeing through the lie.
I suffered in silence, and from then on, I grappled with «internalized homophobia,» exhibiting all the textbook symptoms of self-loathing: binge-eating, significant weight gain, declining grades, absenteeism from school unbeknownst to my parents, bullying due to my shyness and weight, difficulties in maintaining close friendships, negative body image, low self-esteem, defensiveness, shame, a need for constant self-justification, and the belief that I deserved any misfortune that came my way.
Another defining moment occurred around the age of 16, when I regretfully manipulated another boy into trading sexual favors for access to my computer games and drum kit. This memory, long buried in my subconscious, resurfaced during my Ibogaine treatment. It had remained so deeply hidden in my subconscious that I never mentioned it in my extensive journals from that time.
This, I realized, was the missing link that had further cemented my self-loathing: how could I, having been a victim of bullying back then, have done this to someone else? For decades after, I would run from myself, steeped in shame, seeking out any situations that felt punishing.
By 19, I had regularly indulged in weed, alcohol, and LSD. Heroin entered my life in my early twenties as an escape from my repressed sexuality. Although I came out as gay at twenty-six, the grip of heroin persisted until I was forty. I am now forty-seven.
Thursday
BBy Thursday, I had already made a full recovery. Dora and Tareeq, though up and about, still looked like they were still recovering from the physical and emotional ordeal. This sometimes happened, I was told, depending on a person’s usage of opioids. Whereas I was on a low maintenance dose of buprenorphine, Dora and Tareeq’s daily opioid consumption was higher.
After breakfast, we were to go to the Temazcal. A temazcal is a type of traditional sweat lodge, popular in South America. It's a small, dome-shaped structure, often made of volcanic rock and cement, designed to retain heat.
Its therapeutic uses are varied; it's believed to purify the body and mind, aid in detoxification, improve circulation, relieve stress, and promote emotional healing. During a temazcal ceremony, water is poured over hot stones to create steam, often infused with medicinal herbs, enhanc-
Ting the therapeutic experience.
As we all sat around the candle-lit dome, we each shared our Ibogaine experiences, along with the insights we had. Once the sharing session had finished, Alvaro and Ruben played us beautiful healing songs, which we contributed to by either chanting or playing percussion. A few times, just as the heat in the Temazcal reached the threshold of being unbearable, we would alternate with a dip in the swimming pool’s cool water.
The rest of the afternoon following lunch was spent between full-body massages and counseling sessions.
At dinner, we were told that on Friday morning, we would be taking another short-acting ancestral medicine, so we should abstain from eating breakfast. This substance is known for inducing intense and short-lived psychedelic experiences when ingested.
Friday
Therapeutically, this ancestral medicine has been explored for its potential in treating various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It produces profound emotional and introspective experiences that can lead to psychological insights and emotional release.
Additionally, the compound further helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms for various substances. Going beyond its therapeutic applications, it is often used for personal development and the exploration of consciousness. Below is a first-hand account of that experience.
Moments after taking the prescribed ancestral medicine, I stretch back on the grass and hear a sound like ripping cellophane.
I feel as if my soul is being catapulted out of my body and strewn across an initially empty and formless space, which then explodes, radiating outwards into what seems like uncountable, unimaginable atoms, protons, electrons, and wavelengths rendered visible, in a movement of wild dispersion that my rational mind perceives as similar to what the universe’s Big Bang may have been like.
Particles of matter collide. Some meld, while others are repelled. There is a rapid shifting and incessant rearranging of everything I have been conditioned to believe as reality, as I fully and wordlessly realize I am both in and of the Cosmos.
I am being spoken to in a new, undulating, visual language unlike anything else, which transcends the verbal chatter of our monkey minds, which we have grown too accustomed to.
Beings that are not immediately identifiable as beings send me a message, translated in feeling, that I do not yet need to understand, as much as I should simply observe what they are doing.
Feeling the limits of my physical being stretched beyond palpable tissue, I become engorged with eternity. I am only faintly aware that my heart is racing, and for a fraction of a second, I fear its explosion and my ultimate physical death. There is a moment
of slight panic. I am surely dying, and this is what it feels like.
I begin breathing deeply, sighing and groaning as I pass my hands over my closed eyes, and my jaw drops in awe. But no sooner has the fear set in than I receive another coded message, which unfolds as the utter absence of fear and an impossible, overwhelming sense of wonderment.
It appears I am being shown the composition of everything, which is only as terrifying because my mind cannot label, categorize, or comprehend the nature of that which is being shown.
«I don’t know what to do with this!»
I think. But that is as close to a rational thought as I can catch.
The answer, again, in this new visual language, is nothing. Keep watching. You are safe.
I surrender further to this wondrous realm.
So, it shows me more as I watch the exploded particles return to form what appear to be shiny, tubular vortices of a space-time continuum in multi-dimensional layers. I am completely outside my tiny self. Everything matters, but the «I» cannot untangle this.
My rational thinking mind is gifted with intergalactic possibilities, which, quite frankly, I am still unable – if I ever can be – of putting into adequate words.
Language, as I am shown, is a self-replicating, intelligent organism that has chosen us as its host.
There is no trauma when the body becomes irrelevant. There is no time in the gaseous tapestry of eternity. There is no individual story; there is only the Everything of the Oversoul.
Everything I thought I guessed or supposed I knew is reduced to an infinitesimal micro-fraction in this glorious, untranslatable phenomenon unfolding before me.
Filled with an overflowing sense of connectedness, the pixels of this dense, planetary illusion crumble and fall. All the fear, all the doubt, and all the cockiness of existential certitude pale in comparison to the Vibrant Unnameable.
How could I ever have feared pain, both physical and emotional, to the point of trying so hard to dull life through multiple addictions?
I now understand that there is only physical death, as birth is nothing but a rite of passage – a timed interlude in eternity. Absolute death does not exist because there is no end; there is only constant transforma-
tion and an infinite multitude of forms.
I try to open my eyes but swiftly close them again, as everything about the physical level of reality has melted into pixelated formlessness: there is no foothold, and nothing around me is even vaguely recognizable anymore.
As the intensity that has me hyperventilating seems to come down a notch, I manage to utter a tremulous «What the...?!»
There is a part of me that wishes only to reside in these fractal, intangible layers of incomprehensible Creation-Art, which is also the moment that I realize I am deeply home.
I have always been here before, outside of time; there is no coming «here,» just as there is no going back down to this mineral, carbon existence in the body.
I am everywhere, and by being everything, the «I» that perceives this is deliciously halted: this is to exist outside the limits of self and is the most splendid gift I have ever received.
TThe rest of the day was spent reflecting and relaxing. Then, one by one, those of us who agreed to do so recorded our testimonials for the week about to end.
To culminate the week's experiences, we embraced the ultimate challenge under the cool October sun, bathed in the golden hour light: cold exposure therapy, as popularized by Wim Hof.
While some were hesitant about the ice bath, everyone participated. For me, it represented a metaphor for my recovery: the ice and the cold might be unpleasant and challenging initially, but ultimately, they would aid in rebalancing my central nervous system.
With this in mind, we were reminded that ice baths, alongside breathwork, mindfulness, and meditation, are fundamental pillars of recovery, whether from mental health issues or substance addiction.
Later that evening, around the dinner table, there was laughter and lightness. None of our problems had been magically eliminated, but many of them had had a light shone on them.
All of us were then armed with greater selfknowledge than before, and with our nervous systems rebalanced, our withdrawals and cravings curtailed, and our habitual behaviors seen for what they were – maladaptive coping mechanisms for dealing with emo-
tional trauma –I was amazed at how such a diverse crowd of people were united by one common thread in their ailments: inherited narratives of shame, guilt, and unworthiness.
That night, preparing for departure the next morning, where all of us would step back into our daily lives, I sat under the stars in deep thought.
Ibogaine granted me the insight and grace needed for self-forgiveness.
While the past is unchangeable and I've spent years in self-flagellation, I now understand that I am much more than my conditioned survival reactions to external events.
Post-treatment, I felt as if a tremendous weight had been lifted from my shoulders. It was both the weight of my pain and the inherited pain from my family’s toxic relationships, which I had always unsuccessfully tried to mend. My baseline anxiety and sadness vanished, leaving me ready to thrive, not just survive.
Reentering my life with its triggers and stressors, I found myself no longer compelled to drink, use benzos, or use opioids. A year on, and the lightness remains. My gratitude to Alvaro and our Tabula Rasa Retreat Team is boundless.
Though still a work in progress, I have made significant changes in my routines, adopting a healthier, more holistic, and more connected approach to life. Recov-
ery is not merely the absence of drugs or symptoms of illness, nor is it solely about how Ibogaine rewires the brain. It's about re-evaluating and changing your life to make space for a better you.
Ibogaine and other supporting holistic therapies from Tabula Rasa Retreat have shown me that physical death is not the end and that everything in the universe is deeply interconnected.
For millennia, we co-evolved with plants, yet it took only a few hundred years for our species to forget the miracle of natural healing and to lose trust in our body’s capacity for depth, self-love, and regeneration.
We must remember that not everything that happens to us reflects who we are; rather, it builds on the lies we are told about conditional love.
The foundation for meaningful change, which I now understand, lies in recognizing that we are, in fact, entirely enough. It's about discovering ways to connect more with our body's intuition and healing capacity than with our mind’s tendency to wander into the trappings of inherited narratives about ourselves.
We are, in fact, completely enough. www.tabularasaretreat.com

IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF INTEREST FROM THE WESTERN WORLD IN A FASCINATING AFRICAN ROOT BARK IBOGA. THIS MIRACULOUS PLANT MEDICINE HAS CAPTURED THE ATTENTION OF THOSE WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTIONS, DEPRESSION, AND PTSD, THE CONDITIONS THAT ARE MERCILESSLY RAVAGING WESTERN SOCIETIES.

What are the most important things that a person needs to know before heading into Iboga/Ibogaine treatment?
Before you experience this healing medicine, there are important preparations that must take place. Iboga/Ibogaine have severe interactions with a list of medications, like antidepressants, as well as some medical conditions; this is not something to be taken lightly. Each medication you are on must be reviewed in advance and stopped before the ceremony—from days to weeks leading up to the ceremony, depending on the medication. This is something that your Iboga provider will guide you through.
EKG/ECG monitoring is a must for the treatment, as Ibogaine has a strong effect on the heart. There are things that you can only see on an EKG that do not show up in other kinds of cardiac monitoring. We review our potential clients' EKGs prior to deciding if a person can undergo this treatment. The EKG readings help us time the doses and work out the amounts. The patients often need to go deep into their experience to get the healing they require, and that means serving them high doses of Iboga or Ibogane. Most people have absolutely no problems with this kind of treatment, and any potential issues are identified way before the decision to go forward is made.
What are the biggest misconceptions that people have about iboga/ibogaine?
TThere are many misconceptions about Iboga or Ibogaine, which is unfortunate because people either do not know about the powerful benefits of this medicine or were exposed to inaccurate information about the plant. Either way, people are missing out. Iboga and Ibogaine are not “street drugs." They're not addictive whatsoever; they provide freedom from addictions, heal trauma, remove trauma-based behaviors in people, and give other reported benefits for certain medical conditions. You will not find an Ibogaine addict anywhere. You will not find anyone reduced to poverty or who was led to commit crimes to get an “Ibogaine fix." This is misinformation.
TThis medicine is unlike the addictive substances that people are hooked on: coffee, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, and more. Ibogaine is famous for its antiaddictive properties and for widening a person’s perspective on life. This is not a drug that is used for partying or to escape one’s reality. This incredible African root bark is a healing medicine that gives a person another chance to live a happy and fulfilling life.
IIboga is a powerful life-changing experience for anyone who is looking to reset the current state they are stuck in, to help remove their painful childhood conditioning, and to bring a person to an understanding of how to process unfortunate events in their lives that impacted a person so much that their entire existence is affected because of that one traumatic instance. Iboga is gifting someone with the freedom to reassess their life and start living consciously. Iboga gives one the power to take a leading role in their own life without being jerked around by past circumstances.
After the Iboga ceremony, one can experience this elevated state of mind for months with regular new insights invigorating and uplifting their mood, especially if you make time for this processing by taking walks in nature, disconnecting from the media, or meditating.
What would a person see or experience during an Iboga ceremony?
IIt is hard to say exactly what you might experience; each experience is personal and widely different for each individual. There are no generalizations here. The visions could cycle through the memories of a person, cleaning out traumatic life events. Sometimes the visions even appear to come from previous or future lifetimes; you may see your ancestors or become aware of shared soul groups. There are a wide range of possibilities. Or one might have no visions at all.
After the ceremony, you will get a great experience of the ‘Overview’ perspective, which goes on for 3-6 months. You will start seeing the bigger picture of everything in your life, which will bring you a feeling of peaceful calm, and serenity.
What is the difference between Ibogaine and Iboga treatment? Who is benefiting the most from each of these treatments?
IIbogaine is mostly used to treat opiates and other addictions. Iboga is valuable for the psycho-spiritual experience to gain a new perspective on life.
Iboga has 11 active alkaloids, one of which is Ibogaine HCL. These plug into different receptors in the body, resetting the receptor site while producing visions that are considered an important spiritual journey by the Bwiti (the indigenous Iboga-consuming culture in Gabon, Africa).
Ibogaine HCL plugs into the opiate receptors, quickly healing the physical aspect of heroin addiction, for example, with no withdrawal symptoms. At that point, the epic psychedelic journey begins, and with some guidance from trained therapists, deep psychological healing can occur.
TThis instant healing of opiate addiction is why Ibogaine HCL became famous. Iboga has some Ibogaine in it, but not enough to cure most opiate addictions. They say it takes you to a place physically where you would be if you had stopped opiates using other modern medical detox methods for 2 years. This was jaw-dropping, as heroin and opiates were previously well-known for being extremely painful to detox from. With Ibogaine and Iboga, people let go of the addiction not only physically but psychologically as well. This deep effect on the psyche of a person is crucial to healing the problems of addiction, depression, and anxiety that so many of us deal with. I personally feel that Iboga saved my life, and I felt driven to learn and work with his plant and pass this experience on to those who suffer still.
BBoth Ibogaine HCL and Iboga reset the serotonin system, which helps with depression and other behaviors. Also, both Ibogaine and Iboga provide a medically confirmed Neural Growth Hormone release. This is something that adults don´t typically have a lot of, but children have vast amounts of. This means that you will be able to learn new things more rapidly and deeply, like a young child. For example, a young child automatically learns the languages spoken around them, and whatever those languages are, they will typically speak them at a native speaker level. I personally learned to speak Spanish in my 30s. I had previously failed French at school in the UK, so I was not a natural when it came to foreign languages. But after a series of doses of Iboga and Ibogaine and living in a Spanishspeaking country, I am now fluent in Spanish. This is just one example to inspire anyone who is curious about healing with Iboga. Iboga and Ibogaines have shown significant help in the treatment of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. This African root benefits many medical disorders, not just depression and addiction.
Are all Iboga/Ibogaine providers alike?
IIn the wider Ibogaine/Iboga community, there is a division between the traditionalist/shamanic and the scientific/medical models. The noticeable difference in the medical model is the lack of a traditional ceremony, which directly affects one’s meaningful Iboga/Ibogaine inner experience. Another variation, and it’s a big one, is the timing of the administration of the medicine. Typically, under a medical model, the treatment is performed during the day, whereas the traditional Iboga ceremonies are held at night, which massively enhances the experience. We witness spectacular healings and hear jaw-dropping stories when the ceremony is carried out at night.
How is Madera Sagrata different from other providers?
AAt Madera Sagrada, we are committed to providing our guests with safe and effective Ibogaine treatments and Iboga ceremonies. It is our goal to provide the space for you to leave behind whatever no longer serves you so you can begin the journey of becoming your fully realized self.
S“Safe” and “effective” describe our approach. I have an extensive record of working and volunteering with a wide range of Iboga and Ibogaine providers. I devoured all available books and scientific research on the subject during my training. At Madera Sagrada, we combine the best parts of both medical and traditional approaches to ensure a safe and effective treatment. We have treated a wide range of people, from those suffering from addictions to those struggling with depression or having other behavioral issues, and we have witnessed staggering changes. Our reviews online (including on Facebook, Google, and Trust Pilot) are full of great testimonials.
WWe have the perfect setting for this work here in Spain: our building seems to have organically emerged from the Spanish countryside. The old stone walls and timbered roofs are set in our beautiful grounds, which contain both a swimming pool and a sweat lodge. Going into the cold and heat resets other parts of a person’s body's chemistry. It is our aim that, at the end of the weeklong session with us, you will be fully reset by both the Iboga/Ibogaine and these supporting practices. You will leave totally fresh and ready to be a new, improved version of yourself. We stay in touch with ex-clients for the coming months and years to check in with them. We offer advice and keep some records of your progress. We genuinely care about our clients and look forward to hearing about their progress.
IIf you would like to know more about Iboga or Ibogaine and learn how useful it can be to you or someone you know, please get in touch at maderasagrada@protonmail.com You can learn more at www.maderasagrada.org
