LETTER FROM THE EDITOR We at L'Vegue Magazine bring the most interesting people in the city to our pages. I am honored to have the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization be part of the magazine. Jodi Hale Fonfa, CEO, and Audra Baldwin, COO, who head the organization are good friends. I am happy to put our reigning queens on the cover. We are also featuring Wayne Newton who is an institution in Vegas. We are honored to feature a legend who was interviewed by my good friend Steve Schorr. Not a lot of publications have the ability to get these very high end personalities as most of them are very private. L'Vegue has been lucky in the sense that most of them have become friends and respect me and have a high regard for me as an artist and a couturier. Modesty aside, I believe they know everything I do is "always" tastefully done. We also have a new contributing writer who has joined L'Vegue. My very good friend, Elaine Newton. Funny, her first column comes out in this issue the same time as her EX (Wayne ) ...Oh well...Love you Elaine!....

We are also proud to announce our newest section L'Vegue Hollywood. With the help of our esteemed photographer Jaime Lim, we will be following the fashion, art and culture that is Hollywood. It will be an amazing journey to discover the differences that exist in different cities as we explore fashion in Las Vegas, Hollywood and New York. Putting together a magazine is a team effort. I am grateful to the people who have worked and dedicated time, talent and creativity. I think they see and share the same vision I see. Not a lot of people understand and know fashion. There are some people who can sew and sketch but this doesn't mean you are automatically a designer. It takes great skill, experience, knowledge and expertise. One has to have a legitimate background and track record to be an authority on fashion. One has to be "credible." Spring for me is like a rebirth and new outlook. I am thrilled with this issue. It is a labor of Love! Tony and I worked tirelessly to make sure everything is done "on time.” I always believe in "quality" not quantity. You can never "compromise" on quality. You can never "quantify" quality just like love and beauty! When you see a beautiful woman walking down the street do you can't say "Hey look! She is 35% beautiful.” I hope you like our spring issue. As we are starting to work on the summer issue now...It never stops....but hey ...I LOVE WHAT I DO!.....

efore Jodi Hale Fonfa was brought in as the CEO for the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization, a Las Vegas non profit 501 Š (3), she generated a very impressive resume of experience. As a fitness trainer she sustained an exclusive list of celebrity clients from Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominated actress Sharon Stone, Academy Award nominee, multitalented award winning actress Bette Midler, Dick Smothers of the Smothers Brothers, and several players from the Superbowl champion New England Patriots. As a certified fitness trainer she still finds time to teach group fitness and yoga classes at various gyms in the Las Vegas Valley. Just when you think, where does she find the time, her list of achievements and philanthropy continue on and read like a short story. Jodi is kept busy with her position with the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization but she also sets aside time to be a member on many philanthropic committees in Las Vegas. She contends her passion allows her to keep such a busy schedule because she relishes the work she does. Jodi currently sits on the Board of Directors for the world renowned Debbie Allen Dance Academy, is a committee member for the Nathan Adelson Hospice, committee member

for the Animal Foundation, best in show, and gives to other causes close to her heart such as JDRF. Nevada Ballet, ADL and more. But Jodi will tell you her prime achievement that she is most proud of is the Empowerment Award. Jodi created this award in the memory of her mother Eileen Hale. This award requires Miss Nevada contestants to submit an essay on what empowerment means to them. This award has also formed special meaning to the contestants as well. It requires them to put thought into the word empowerment and how they can live with empowerment in their lives. The essays are judged by a separate panel of judges and the winner receives a $1,000 scholarship that goes to the educational institution of her choosing. Jodi has also been married for 29 years to Andrew Fonfa, successful real estate developer, and she is the mother to three beautiful children. So, if you ever have the chance to run into Jodi Hale Fonfa at an event or on her way to teach a fitness class know she has probably already scheduled 3 meetings, 2 workout classes and donated her time at another charity organization and her day is still not over.

ooking your best is always fashionable. When watching the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, I was struck by Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach's answer to the question of why she should be the winner- her response, “…I want to show the world, the universe, rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.” Being “confidently beautiful” comes from the inside, but looking your best on the outside may take more than just a smile. A laser, peel, product, filler or toxin could make your smile shine even brighter.

H.L. Greenberg, M.D. is a board certified dermatologist and founder of Las Vegas Dermatologypracticing in Las Vegas since 2006, he specializes in cosmetic, laser, surgical and medical dermatology. I had an interesting conversation with David Tupaz who reminded me that when it comes to pageants and fashion, the contest is not best gown, but best in gown. Whether you have an expensive outfit or one that is more affordable, it's how you wear what you have that matters most. As a consumer it's hard to know what product or service would improve your look the most; there are so many options to treat your skin and each one sounds better and more innovative than the next. Although a vampire facial, radio-frequency needling or plasma peel may sound like the latest and greatest treatment available, they could also be just a passing fad whose effect on your beauty may not be as spectacular as promised. I remember tweeting a dermatologist friend of mine about her offering placenta facials ala Kim Kardashian, and asking where did she get her placenta for the treatmentCostco, Mckesson, Whole Foods? Using placenta for your facial may be the latest fad due to all the nutrients found in placenta, but a standard facial with growth factors and vitamin C would serve just fine. Increased costs and the latest treatment on T.V. or in the tabloids won't make you confidently beautiful; having appropriate skin care treatments and individualized treatment choices are essential for beautiful looking skin. Knowing what you need to look confidently beautiful may not be easily determined on your own. My favorite treatment for aged looking skin is a carbon dioxide laser aka a CO2 laser, which smoothes away fine wrinkles allowing for fresh looking skin to develop in its place. Using a laser to smooth away wrinkles can provide an amazing result, but multiple treatments may be

necessary and downtime can include a week of redness and a month where the skin appears slightly pink. Many people ask if there are other options with less downtime and similar results? A Dermapen or microneedling treatment can also smooth out wrinkles with about a day and a half of downtime, but many more treatments are required to achieve beautiful looking skin, and eyelid wrinkles can only be treated with a CO2 laser (aka- the Madonna lift), and older looking eyelids cannot be treated with a Dermapen. As I get older, my confidence in who I am grows, but my physical appearance requires a little more effort to look my best. Even though I have access to all types of lasers, services, devices and products, I rarely have time to treat myself. This past week I posted a picture on Instagram of me getting a microdermabrasion (a suction device with a diamond tip used to exfoliate the skin and remove debris from blocked pores). Although fancier versions of a microdermabrasion exist including the hydrafacial and silk peel, our diamond tipped device left my skin feeling fresh and clean, the perfect treatment for my exfoliating my dull looking epidermis. No matter what procedure you have, product you purchase or skin care regimen you undertake, know that washing, protecting, anti aging and moisturizing your skin will go a long way to improving your look. Confidence in your beauty along with appropriate treatments and products will help you look your best, whether you're Miss Universe, Miss Summerlin or Mr. Mom.

very bride's goal is to look flawless and beautiful on their wedding day. Aside from the fabulous bridal dress, & extravagant venues; the perfect hair and makeup is an absolute essential when planning a wedding. Your investment in beauty will be seen and treasured in every photo on your wedding day. - Your goal is to bring out your best features. I highly recommend a face foundation that doesn't contain a high SPF sunscreen, as it contains a formula that makes you look shiny which then causes the light to bounce back when taking pictures. If you are doing an outdoor wedding, use a moisturizer that contains SPF sunscreen in it. Another way to keep your face foundation lasting longer is to use a good matte base primer under any type of foundation. Base primers helps fill in pores and makes the skin look airbrushed and your skin smoother. - Concealers: To hide imperfections, use a concealer that helps neutralize any facial discolorations. Green; neutralizes redness (rosacea, pimples, etc.) Yellow/Peach; neutralizes Blue (dark circles), and Lavender; neutralizes yellow (bruises, under eye darkness). - To avoid looking too pale on your wedding day, I recommend a good neutral matte cheek blush to achieve that blushing bridal look. Choose peachy pink colored blushes. - Aside from face primers to keep your face foundations lasting longer, eyeshadow primer is also an essential to your makeup regiment. Eyeshadow primers will prevent your eye makeup from creasing and it helps to keep your eyeshadow colors stay vibrant, & fresh throughout the day. - Weddings can be a teary emotional event. For my brides I like to use a water proof mascara should you happen to shed a tear. I like to use black/brown in color rather than full black. It brings out a more open and natural look to the eye. Another way to enhance your eyes without using too much eye makeup is to wear artificial eyelashes or falsies. - Always keep a blotting paper to help absorb the natural oils on the face and to keep you looking fresh throughout the day!

First of all I wanna say that you're so talented on what you do, and keep it up!...I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the beautiful transformation makeup on me and thank you for teaching me the basics of makeup and recommendations. I've been searching for the right color concealer that matches my African American skin . I would never thought mixing two different color concealers/foundations,up until you suggested it to me.

Wayne Newton HIS LIFE & LEGACY ON AND OFF THE STAGE

UNDER THE VEGAS SUN with Steve Schorr

W A Y N E

N E W T O N

I Love Las Vegas and I am Proud to Call it My Home! By: Steve Schorr

This Is Las Vegas… There Is A Saying That Goes In Part: Live With Intention Walk To The Edge Play With Abandon Continue To Learn Do What You Love, And Love As If This Is All There Is! 24 | L’VEGUE.COM

S

ince he was a junior in high school, Las Vegas has indeed been the home of Wayne Newton. Born Carson Wayne Newton in Virginia in 1942 he came to Las Vegas when he was a young man performing with his brother Jerry. In a private one-on-one interview with Wayne he shared his life, his hopes and his insights into the ever-changing world around him. Wayne Newton admitted that he has been performing since the age of six, when he learned to play piano and guitar. Today he plays 26 instruments and to date has performed in front of more than 40 million people. “I don't perform for the applause, or the joy to be on stage but instead,” says Wayne, “ I perform to bring people a smile or two!”

I

t all began when a talent agent saw Wayne and his brother perform and signed them on to work in the Carnival Lounge at Fremont Hotel Downtown Las Vegas. The year 1958. Wayne admits they were both just kids and when they first got to town they had just $20 between them. What was supposed to last just two weeks instead lasted 46 weeks over five years, six shows a day, six days a week. But that wasn't all! "It will always be Jack Benny who made the biggest change in my life," says Wayne. Mr. Benny, as he calls him, asked him to sign on as his opening act in Las Vegas. Wayne says, " But Mr. Benny had more for me, he helped me star in my own show at the Flamingo." The problem was it was November and as most people might remember back then no one went to shows in November around Thanksgiving in Las Vegas! Well they did, local residents who became fans of the Newton Brothers at the Fremont showed up in

great numbers, even broke records for attendance, and as the saying goes, it was history making from there. Wayne says he still misses performing on the Las Vegas Strip but feels those times will be back again. He said he was honored when asked recently to be there opening night for the inaugural performance at the T-Mobile Arena. "To welcome this great entertainment center to our town is indeed an honor for me," admits Wayne. But he says, “don't think that's all.” Wayne believes Las Vegas entertainment options over the years have been cyclical. "First it was the star policy, then the magic shows, then the impersonators, now it's the Cirque shows but it's not done," he predicts, "The star policy is coming back and soon i'll be back on the Strip performing!" For now the highlight of his day, when not performing at various centers

around the globe, is greeting the many people who finally have the opportunity to visit his 52 acre home and ranch known as Casa de Shenandoah. Thanks to his dear friends and partners Lacy and Dorothy Harber, the ranch has been opened to the public for tours. The ranch is very special to Wayne. “This property is sacred to me,” says Wayne, “ There is something very special about this place!” From the first five acres he purchased in 1966 to today it has remained an important legacy of his life. “This has been my home and the first house built on the property was for my mom and dad and Jerry and me.” His mom and dad, Pat and Evelyn, played a key role in Wayne's life until the day they died. Wayne admits, “ When I need insight or tough answers I still walk into that home and sense the love that was there and it so often gives me direction.”

oday the ranch, complete with a small zoo, exotic birds, a capuchin monkey named “Boo” and of course his amazing Arabian horses, is seen by thousands who would never have had the opportunity to do so in the past. presidential letters and Robert E. Lee sword to a state-of-the-art barn housing up to 60 Arabian horses, to his tremendous car collection, USO Memorabilia and even his famous jet it is all now for people to see. All of this comes from a man who remains very proud of his home. “ I love Las Vegas and I am proud to call this my home,” he says. Shenandoah at the corner of Pecos and Sunset in Las Vegas used to be just a one-lane dirt road. Today Shenandoah is like an oasis in the desert. And no matter

what, don't call Las Vegas “Sin City” around Wayne. “I hate those words and will never lend my name to anything that describes my home, my town as those two words,” he says proudly. He makes it a point that Las Vegas is the only city in the world built for what it is, the Entertainment Capital of the World and his ranch was created to one day be open to the public as it is today. Wayne says, “My Mom always told me share the things you love with others.” And he does!

But there remains a time in his life that still tugs at his heart. Shortly after Wayne was licensed to become a part owner of the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, which he operated from 1980 to 1982, there was a National TV news story called “Wayne Newton and the Mob.” The investigative story alleged Wayne had ties to two reported organized crime individuals, Guido Penosi and Frank Piccolo. “It was all untrue and my name had been harmed,” said Wayne. Newton along with his attorney, the late noted Las Vegas lawyer Mort Galane, filed suit again the network and won but Newton said he never really got over it. “You never know how many people really believed it,” he said, “It hurt me inside, and I don't know if you ever get over that sort of thing!”

B

ut if you think the Wayne Newton story is over, not yet. There is another side of Wayne that most people don't see and that is his amazing philanthropic heart. “I wake up each day thinking about what I can do to make the world just a little better!” says Wayne. He dedicates much of what he does to helping Veterans, Active Duty Military, First Responders and organizations like Opportunity Village. “I am thankful each

day for my Life and I could never be honest with myself if I didn't help others,” he says. His home has welcomed Presidents, Wounded Warriors, various charitable organizations but most importantly just people wanting to get a glimpse into this very special man and his very special place. Whether you call him Mr. Las Vegas, The Midnight Idol or Mr. Entertainment Wayne Newton remains a one-of-a-kind.

irst off, what is a Wheels Event? At Land Rover Las Vegas, we implement an entire customer-centric event with all levels of off-road driving experience welcomed. Let's face it, any vehicle can be demonstrated on the road just outside of the showroom. How many SUVs can be put to the test and driven on a 45째 slant without the slightest bit of slippage or tipping? Only Land Rovers can because they are extremely centered and bottom heavy while other SUVs can be top-heavy and unstable. These events show customers how to use their Land Rovers in rough and challenging conditions. These events are held quarterly. How are the Event locations chosen? First, a Land Rover professional will go out and scout an interesting spot. We try to find an urban, eccentric area where most customers probably have never been or have never heard of. Since Nevada has a plethora of open land, we are very fortunate to have several admirable venues to choose from. We typically host our events based on two factors: 1. Destination: We like to choose a location that has a heightened technicality-based terrain. On occasion, we choose more popular venues that are typically less challenging for our customers. 2. Technicality: Our technical events are usually about a 7 based on a 1 to 10 difficulty scale. Our employees are extremely experienced and help customers through areas that require spotting and are more abstruse. Regardless of the difficulty of any event we do, we bring Land Rover trained technicians in case of any mechanical difficulties that may occur during complex driving. Our average Wheels Event hosts 15 to 20 customer vehicles, depending on the trail's difficulty (first come, first serve. We hold RSVPs). We have such a small group of vehicles because we don't want anyone waiting for 30 minutes to get through a narrow pass. Lunch is arranged and paid for by Land Rover Las Vegas. The event coordinator will pick up sandwiches in the morning and pass them out to everyone. On many occasions, we have a caterer drive out to our event's lunch site. In the past we have had Cow Camp Catering cater an event with Chef Jim making amazing fried chicken, tri tip and delicious peach cobbler. If we are doing a destination event, we will eat there. We always provide plenty of water and snacks throughout the day. A typical Wheels Event takes place on a Sunday. Our customers arrive at the showroom; we will have breakfast (usually bagels), juice and coffee. We then give a brief description regarding the adventure we are about to explore, hand out an agenda and off we go!

hen David Tupaz, Editor-in-Chief of L'Vegue Magazine, approached me about writing an ongoing series for the magazine, my first thought was, what would I write about? I asked David and he stated, “whatever comes to mind. As the wife of a celebrity it brought many great adventures. I had the opportunity to meet many who've touched my life along the way. Each person who has made an impression over the years have taught me lessons about love, life, and compassion. I hope as you read my series you find the humor and fun as well as appreciate the trial and tribulations of life and can relate to some of my experiences that you may have had in your own life.

really wanted my first article to be fun, light and humorous. However, feeling melancholy, after the loss of a dear friend in the past month, I reflected on a few friends I have loved and lost. began thinking about the joy and giggles we shared along the way and the lessons they've left behind. So I decided to share a few stories of these wonderful people.

“Elio”, as we called her, had a great sense of humor. She taught me to laugh at myself and not to take things so seriously. Her self-deprecating humor always gave me the giggles. My favorite story was the night she asked twelve

decorated with beautiful flowers, wines ready for pouring and the lighting was perfect to feature the centerpiece. There it was, the reason for getting us together. One of the guests exclaims “Are you kidding, you had us dress up to celebrate a purse?” Yes, it was a shiny new “minaudiere.” We laughed (of course) as we sat down to enjoy and celebrate an evening of love and laughter with friends. It was her way to get us together. I will miss her extraordinary spirit and wonderful way of making all occasions fun.

hen there was “V' who I would describe as a deep thinker. She lived with a serious illness for a number of years. She never complained. V was the consummate teacher on how to live life valiantly under the most trying circumstances. Once year she planned for us to go on a safari in Africa for three weeks. Who knew she meant a “real safari”. No running water except for a bucket overhead to shower, a hole in the ground with dirt for a bathroom. Yes, it was a three-week trip “oy vay” as they say. It's a vacation, where's the spa and room service? I asked V why here and not Paris? She answered in her most empathetic voice, “you'll see at the end of the trip”.

ell, being the trooper that I am, I soldiered on. On the second week of our trip we went to the Moreat Kenya Safari Club. OMG I was so excited to see a civilized hotel. Beds with fresh linens and running water. I never thought it would feel so good to appreciate the things in life we take for granted. When it was time to leave, there were claw marks left on the door as they tried to peel me away from my room. (my apologies to the hotel door) But needless to say I finally gave up and trekked on with friends. I did mention what a trooper I was) NOT!

I

t wasn't until the third week into the trip that “I got it!” What V was trying to express that would happen by this time. We were on the Malindi Coast, and it was heaven on earth. The ocean was so clear with multicolors, flowers with fruits like being in Hawaii. We traveled throughout Kenya bonding for a lifetime. I thank “V” for the memories and a true spiritual experience that will forever be etched in my mind.

hen there was Walter. Walter was a deep loss, a friend that left far too soon. He was the funniest man I have ever known. I met him and his wife through a mutual friend from Hawaii who told Walter, when you're in Las Vegas call my friend Elaine Newton. He assumed with the name Newton I wouldn't be a Japanese girl. So, when he arrived at my house and I answered the door he asked “Is Mrs. Newton in?” I kindly replied “I am Mrs. Newton”. As our friendship grew throughout the

olor evokes emotion. Red is known to stimulate our appetite and passions. And Blue is believed to foster serenity, tranquility and relaxation.

Pantone, the definitive authority of color, named Rose Quartz (PANTONE 13-1520) as one of the 2016 "Colors of the Year". Rose Quartz is thought to produce a warm embracing effect in design. Although Rose Quartz reminds most people of cotton candy and bubble gum, this shade of pink, as it's better known in most circles, has always been a staple in Men's Fashion. Think Brooks Brothers, Ike Behar, Ted Baker and Pinks beautiful crafted shirts. Rose Quartz is also found in many fashion designers collections, like Chanel, as well as kids clothing, and toys. The dilemma arises when it comes to blending Rose Quartz in your home décor. So how should you think "pink" in your home? For a refined look start with a grey tailored sofa, and pair it with a coffee table in silver, rose gold or a copper finish, next add Rose Quartz pillows, and a plush throw. To create a focal point in a room, choose a unique or largescale piece of furniture like a bed, buffet, chest or an occasional chair in Rose Quartz to give to the room a pop of color. An abstract painting, metallic rose wall covering or mirrors paired with a rose gold modern lighting fixture can give the room a transitional or contemporary flair.

Let's not forget the accessories. They are like jewelry for the room. Add Rose Quartz vases, candle holders, decorative pieces, and botanicals to bring sparkle and excitement to the room. All of these elements blended together will create a perfect mix of harmony and serenity when using Rose Quartz. Be Color Brave! Create a Stir with Rose!

odi Hale Fonfa knows only too well the benefits of being married to, Las Vegas real Estate developer, Andrew Fonfa when it comes to building your own home. Andrew Fonfa, Developer of Allure Las Vegas, a $240 million high-rise condominium project next to the Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino site, knows what is important for their personal home besides location, location, location. For the Fonfa's it's views, views, views. Las Vegas is shaped like a bowl. The center of the bowl being the Las Vegas strip. Surrounding that bowl are astounding mountain tops properties with some of the most fantastic views. While most locals know this, many visitors to our city don't realize the life that exists outside of the strip. And that's ok because it gives us locals the peace and serenity to raise our families outside the influence of "Sin City", a term most locals detest. As for the Fonfa's, their stunningly modern stucco home sits on the west side of town with a short drive into the hills. Their two story home boasts a small rooftop lounge area offering them 360 degree views of the entire valley. Their home is decorated with warm wood floors throughout and lots of windows that offer stunning views and enhanced lighting to finish off the rooms creating a warm, inviting feeling. Inside; each room was meticulously decorated to reflect their personal taste. However, what I most enjoyed was the office with a large credenza bookcase dedicated to Jodi's many achievements in fitness. Although married to such a high profile husband, he doesn't allow his achievements to overshadow hers and this shows in their home. Outside; the greenery adjacent to the in-ground pool, contributes to the ambiance of living outside their desert surroundings. Privacy abounds with the mature trees and a location world's away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

adja Engst, fourteen year old top model from Sweden, was in New York for her second season of NYFW along with Seira Kiyono, a Japanese top petite model from Bangkok, Thailand. Both arrived to the fanfare of the paparazzi that swarm like bees looking for their queen during fashion week. The paparazzi's job is to catch a celebrity in their most vulnerable moment. The more un-censored the photo, the higher the price they may sell for.

W

hile it is many little girl's dream to become a model, being famous comes with its drawbacks. Today Nadja and Seira are navigating the waiting photogs and are learning very quickly the necessity of always looking your best and on top of your game when out in public. Even between shows and stylings, the models need to be prepared to pose for the press and media. “There is no “personal time” when in public for a fashion model.” States, Jorgen Jorgensen, CEO of Heartland Modeling Agency. “One slip or awkward moment can catch their most embarrassing moment at any time. While even fashion models are human and have their flaws, that is not exactly the way one wants to go viral on social media.”

DESIGNERS TO WATCH

Becca Pahor is a Las Vegas native who's been obsessed with fashion ever since she could remember. She learned to sew in 8th grade living skills class, and she's been sewing ever since. She went to Southwest Career and Technical Academy for high school, where she majored in Fashion Design. There she created her first mini-collection, which showed at Tivoli Village, at the age of 17. Since then she has created a new collection and shown at the LVFDC's Fashion Friday as well as the Pret-a-Porter event. Becca is pursuing a BA in Fashion Design at Sanford Brown College. There, she is continuing to develop her brand, called Bex. The style aesthetic of Bex is bright and modern, with a focus on playing with proportions and colors. Her clothing marries minimalism and maximalism with its edgy yet easy silhouettes and bold print and color combinations.

Corinthia Peoples Designs offers fine handcrafted jewelry made exclusively with semi-precious gemstones, freshwater pearls & precious metals. Collections by CORINTHIA PEOPLES are high quality, superior craftsmanship, uncompromising artistry and bold originality.

Dori Johnson was born and raised in Poland. At an early age she displayed an interest in fashion. Growing up in a large family she couldn't afford new clothes. Most of Dori's outfits were hand-me-downs from her older sister. Craving something new she started altering those clothes. Recycling her old clothes she was able to create something new from something old. At age 7 without formal training she designed outfits for her dolls from fabric scraps. This is how she was learning about draping techniques without even knowing or understanding what she was doing. Dori moved to Las Vegas, NV and continued her Fashion Design program at IADT Las Vegas. Dori has showcased her designs in fashion shows organized by the school and her designs were published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Las Vegas Sun on April 5, 2014. 64 | L’VEGUE.COM

nvironmentally Conscious Fashion

I

t is so easy in this day and age to go to any store or online to choose a dress and accessories and call it a day. However, besides PETA, who is well known for protecting animals from becoming fashion statements, for the average consumer; very little thought is involved in making environmentally conscious fashion choices. One would have to do a lot of research to find designers who design with the environment and preservation of natural resources in mind.

Tony Ferriera and David Tupaz of L'Vegue Magazine had the opportunity to view the exclusive Urban Jungle Collection of Designer Ana Gutierrez. Ana opened her new retail studio at the Grand Bazaar Shops on December 9th 2015. Her line not only speaks to one's fashion sense but is inspired by the balance between urban development and environmental preservation. Photographs of iconic places in San José, Costa Rica´s capital city, are infused into prints for dresses and handbags. Traditional weaving technics from indigenous people are used to create unique handmade bags.

Nazareno Wood Necklace. Center piece made with ametyst druzy rose quartz garnet and hematite set in sterling silver $ 750.00

Genuine leather woven Tote $455

The jewelry, made with semiprecious stones set in Sterling Silver, evoke Costa Rica´s lush jungle. Statement necklaces also include precious woods like Cocobolo and Nazareno.

Guanacaste wood bangles embellished with druzy and semiprecious stones set in sterling silver $390

Within the program of environmental protection, all pieces of jewelry are made with recycled silver from x-ray film and other similar materials. To encourage entrepreneurship, independent goldsmiths and craftsmen/women create the pieces with Gutierrez designs, which gives the brand customers the joy of using unique collectible pieces, so hard to find in the times of the mass production industry.

DT: You have been in the retail business for quite awhile and perfected it. What is the secret formula to succeed in retail? AN: I always keep my client’s needs top of mind first and foremost. I am very client centric on my approach from a service stand point and for the assortments I bring in the store. I have to always be very aware of having unique items and collections in my store which help to set us apart from the rest. DT: If you were not a retailer today? what would you have chosen as another career? AN: As a child I always wanted to be in retail. I think I would have become a fashion designer for both men and women’s collections. DT Who were the role models that inspired you in life? AN: When growing up in Europe as a kid, I was inspired by not just people but by the culture and fashions of the 70's that I was exposed to in London, Paris, and Frankfurt. DT: What is one of the best things you like about owning and operating your own retail store? AN: Being free to create and reinvent the look and feel of my store seasonally. If I see an emerging trend in fashion, I can take a risk and bring it into the store and give it a try for my clients. I am able to take risks and more times than not, I have succeeded. DT: . Las Vegas is known as one of the shopping capitals of the world...is that the primary reason you moved here? AN: I opened my first store in Las Vegas in 1992 at the Forum Shoppes at Caesars Palace. Las Vegas was just starting to be developed into what it is today, a leading fashion shopping destination. It was a huge risk coming here but I knew that there was something very special about the future of this great city and jumped head first into it. Think about it, the Forum Shoppes was where they had the old Las Vegas Grand Prix race track… who was thinking about European fashion then?
