Note from the Editor
This month’s featured paper doll is Bessie Coleman (January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926). Coleman born into a large family of 12 siblings in Atlanta, TX. Although Coleman worked hard to contribute to her family by spending part of her youth working in cotton fields, she completed school and excelled in math. At 12, she received a scholarship to attend the Missionary Baptist Church School. When she turned 18, she attended one term at the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University. Coleman moved to Chicago at the age of 23 where she soon developed an interest in aviation. Due to her gender and race, Coleman was not given the opportunity to take flight lessons in the U.S. Not to be deterred by those restrictions, Coleman studied French and saved money to travel to France to study flying. Despite all the obstacles Coleman faced, she became the first U.S. female pilot of African and Native American descent as well as the first aviator of that heritage to hold an international pilot's license in the U.S.1,2 To learn more about Bessie Coleman, visit these websites and museums below: • • •
