Note from the Editor

This December issue features the Jane Austen (December 16, 1775 – July 18, 1817) Paper Doll in honor of her birthday.

Austen was an English novelist famous for having written Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818, posthumous), and Persuasion (1818, posthumous). 1 Austen was the daughter of a clergyman and the seventh of eight children. She and her siblings were encouraged to be creative and to read books from their father’s library.

When Austen was 12, she began writing stories and by age 14 she completed her first novella.2 Austen preferred not telling most people that she was a writer and she published her novels under a pseudonym. She carefully guarded her talent by concealing her writings when someone entered the room.3 Although Austen never married, she received a proposal from a family friend in 1802, which she initially accepted. However, by the next day she rescinded her acceptance due to her desire to only marry for love. When Austen was 41, she became ill and by the age of 42, the esteemed author died of what was perhaps Addison’s disease.4 Austen’s novels, which exhibited her keen wit and clever character developments, have endured the test of time by remaining popular for 200 years.
