Instructions • Cut out the dolls and their dresses • For the paper dolls with long hair, cut a line between their hair and their shoulders in order to secure the dress tabs to the doll’s shoulders

• Use the tabs on the paper dolls’ clothes to secure the clothes on the dolls.

Note from the Editor

To some, Independence Day (the Fourth of July) means getting together with family and friends for picnics, barbeques, or other outdoor activities, and fireworks. To others, it means a day off from work or just a day to relax. However, the significance of this holiday is more than social activities and fireworks: celebrations on this day should serve as a reminder that the 13 colonies established by England declared their independence from British rule, one year after the start of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).

The following are important facts about Independence Day/Fourth of July: • June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee, a statesman from Virginia, introduced a resolution asking Congress to declare independence from Great Britain;1 • July 2, 1776, not July 4, 1776, is the day the Continental Congress (12 of the 13 colonies) voted for and declared independence by adopting Lee’s resolution;2 • July 4, 1776, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence;3 • August 2, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed;4 • There were 56 signers on the Declaration of Independence – 8 of the signers were British.5 I hope you enjoy the Fourth of July paper dolls as you remember the meaning of this national holiday.
