Note from the Editor
As a dedication to the end of slavery and to Anne Frank, whose birthday is in June, this issue of Treasures contains the Georgia Mae Juneteenth Paper Doll and the Anne Frank Paper Doll.
Juneteenth, a combination of the words June and nineteenth, celebrates the announcement of the endvbb of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s official January 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation, MajorGeneral Gordon Granger arrived in Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that the slaves were free. Prior to Major-General Granger’s arrival, many of the slaves in the south did not know that they had been freed. Juneteenth is an important event to remember and celebrate because it commemorates the beginning of liberty and the end of the brutal, demeaning system under which people were forced to do hard labor without pay and were denied basic human rights. Anne Frank (1929-1945) was a Jewish girl who was forced to go into hiding in an attempt to avoid cruel Nazi persecution. On her 13th birthday, June 12, 1942, Anne received a red plaid diary. With the exception of the first three weeks of having received her diary, Anne wrote about her life in hiding for two years. Anne went into hiding with her father Otto, her mother Edith, and sister Margot as well as four other Jewish occupants: Fritz Pfeffer and the van Pels family Hermann, Auguste, and Peter. As Anne desired to become a writer, her diary not only contained entries of her hopes and events that happened to her and the other occupants in hiding with her, she also wrote a collection of stories. Anne’s last diary entry was on August 1, 1944. On Friday, August 4, 1944, she, her family, and the other occupants in the hiding place were arrested and taken to concentration camps. Tragically, Anne, her mother, Margot, the van Pels family, and Fritz Pfeffer all perished in concentration camps. The only surviving member was Anne’s father Otto Frank who unselfishly published her diary, an act that ensured Anne Frank’s dream to become a published author.
