Note from the Editor

The celebration of women’s history started in 1978 when the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California originated a “Women’s History Week” celebration. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980, as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, after the support of 14 states already committed to celebrating Women’s History Month, Congress declared the month of March as National Women’s History Month.1 As tribute to Women’s History Month, this month’s featured paper doll is Jovita Idár (1885-1946). Jovita Idár and her eight siblings were raised in Laredo, Texas. Idár’s parents published a Spanish language newspaper called La Crónica. The paper detailed the abuses Mexican Texans endured such as lynchings. Although Idár was trained to be a teacher, she decided to write for her family’s newspaper to try to help others. In 1911, she and her family created the Congreso Mexicanista, a convention that addressed women’s rights, racism, and defending Tejanos (Mexican-Americans living in southern Texas) and their property. This forum allowed women to participate and be public speakers. One of the benefits of the Congreso Mexicanista was the foundation of the League of Mexican Women. Idár travelled and bravely acted as a nurse during the Mexican Revolution in 1913. In addition, she later wrote an editorial for the newspaper El Progresso. After her father’s death in 1914, Idár returned to Texas to run La Crónica. She later established a free kindergarten in San Antonio.2 In addition, since March is also Red Cross Month and Clara Barton (18211912) is the founder of the American Red Cross, this issue of Treasures includes the Clara Barton Paper Doll. - Nova Edwards 1
