TIS & THAT iPad Hits the Road | Aurasma-tastic Open House| Gadgets “App”-plenty Aurasma-tastic Open House! Lincoln High School had an “Aurasma-‐tas6c Open House” in August! Student council members made a “Welcome to LHS” video skit of all the important aspects of the school and took pictures that represented those areas, like the gym and library. The most prominent one was the cougar at the entrance of the school.
On the Road with iPad It’s that time of year again – when brave elementary teachers rally the troops and head to the local pumpkin patch for a day of fun on the farm. Even this time-‐honored childhood ritual can receive a fun tech upgrade, though, changing and energizing the experience for a new generation of students.
Have tablet, will travel…
At Freshmen Orienta6on, student council members had new students download the Aurasma app and use it to watch the videos they made as they toured the school. It was awesome! Several teachers could not be in aHendance and made short introduc6on videos . They aHached those to a QR code which the students and “amazed” parents also had the opportunity to access. It was an awesome beginning to the school year!

iPad was meant to take on the world – so slap on that protective case and take it to the streets. Get that tech into students’ hands, and give them free reign to video and photograph what they see. Give students a “treasure hunt” to get their creative juices Flowing, by providing them with a list of three or four must-‐get pictures (pictures that will be used back in the classroom, such as a clear shot of a pumpkin still attached to the vine). Devices do not have to be one to one to be fun – break students into groups of three or four and prompt them when it is time for the iPad to change hands so someone new can take the camera’s reins.

On the bus ride back to school, students can review their photos in the Photos app (no WiFi needed) and label their favorite pics (click the heart in the upper left corner of the photo) to make them easier to Find during their follow-‐up assignment. Remind them to favorite their “treasure hunt” photos. Bus rides home are also the perfect time to record short videos on what the students learned on their trip – a 30-‐second “selFie” reFlection will give the children great soundbites to work with when completing their projects.

What is Skitch? Skitch is a FREE app that allows students to pull photos directly from their camera roll (the Photos app on iPad) and draw right on the photo, then saves their work right back to the camera roll. Use the toolbar on the left side of the Skitch screen to switch between drawing shapes and arrows to writing directly with a finger to typing text. Sktich is versatile and easy to use, making it a great tool for students of a variety of ages and abilities.
SafeSearchKids.com Train young students to use safesearchkids.com for their internet searches (instead of Google) for more child-friendly results. While no search engine filtering is perfect, Safe Search Kids utilizes Google’s strongest filtering software to help remove inappropriate results from student web searches.

day upon returning to school? Keep the students engaged! In their Field trip groups, have them open the Skitch app, access the photo of the pumpkin still attached to the vine that was part of their scavenger hunt, and use the included tools to annotate the photograph directly on the iPad screen. Flip the classroom and have students Find the parts of a pumpkin on their own, using web-‐based sources.
After students leave for the day, pull “favorited” photos from the different iPads to a shared photo album created by the teacher (or, depending on age, have students send their own photos to the share album), then use the built-‐in presets in the Photos app to create a quick slideshow of the students’ photos to play as the children enter the room the next morning. Sending photos to a shared Photos app album does not delete them from the original device, so students will still have access to their photos for their culminating project. For their Final project, engage those young Spielbergs by tasking them to use the iMovie app to create their group’s own Pumpkin Patch movie! Give them the freedom to differentiate the assignment for themselves – beginners and young students can use the “trailers” option to simply “drop and drag” their favorite photos into Apple’s pre-‐designed templates, add their own brief text, and have a smooth Finished product they can be proud of by lunchtime. More advanced students can use the traditional iMovie format to create their Film with soundbites, special effects, and voiceover scripts – the sky is the limit for personalization with iMovie! Students can even include their Skitches in their iMovies – that is true tech integration.
