Classroom Activities -Film Creation The History of Halloween: The history of Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which was celebrated on October 31st. The Celtics celebrated their new year on November 1st marking the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of winter history days of Hallow andThe longer of darkness. Winter brought about hardships and death occurred more frequently. Halloween in the U.S. was not initially celebrated by all. Origins of Halloween began as small parties were people would celebrate the harvest and tell stories of deceased loved ones. As more immigrants entered the U.S. they brought with them their Halloween traditions. A blending of traditions and a push to commercialize the holiday would eventually create our current traditions such as trick-or-treating, costume wearing, and ghost stories.

Halloween Customs

Out of Touch?

Trick or Treating – Children go door-to-door to gather mostly treats. *1/4 of all candy in the U.S. is sold during Halloween. Costumes – During Halloween it is customary for people to dress up in various costumes. Haunted Houses – The need to be scared is fulfilled every year at various haunted houses. I for one am always too chicken. Pumpkin Carving – Initially started as an Irish tradition carving turnips. In American, pumpkins are used instead of turnips. https://goo.gl/AGVDE4

Music for Halloween

Want to get your fright on?

What Are the Rules for the Halloween Playlist? Most holidays have specific musical guidelines that must be followed when the festive mood strikes us. Usually I don't play Jingle Bells at a BBQ in early July, though if somebody brought gift wrapped baby back ribs I might make an exception. The tenets of All Hollows Even are an interesting worldwide phenomenon. While many religions have an analogous holiday, its Christian based iteration is meant to remember saints, martyrs, and dearly departed. But what does somebody bust out on the stereo in the middle of a gathering to celebrate Halloween? If I were to follow the strictest of rules as I do with other holidays, I believe I would get the party started with Mozart's Requiem Mass as it’s clearly the crowd favorite for celebrating the dead. His masterpiece is almost 250 years old and still frequently performed across the country today. If that's too mainstream I might scroll down to Krysztof Penderecki's Polish Requiem or possibly The Requiem Ebraico by composer Eric Zeisl who dedicated its creation to remembering his father. I might also sneak in the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms as I really like the motifs. But, when the sexy nurse shows up I might take a look at other options... Halloween Party

Classroom Activities: Film 1.) Use Halloween themed movies to teach literally elements like plot, character analysis, foreshadowing, theme, moral, narrative structure, setting, and others. You can also teach literally techniques like metaphor, simile, alliteration, hyperbole, and allegory. 2.) After watching the Halloween themed have students create a movie trailer utilizing technology. Applications like iMovie, Cameo, Flimmaker Pro, and Stop Motion Studio to name a few. 3.) Students can also collaborate on their projects using sites like Schoology, Twiducate, and even Office 365 suite.

***As always, more traditional activities include, storytelling, Halloween parties, pumpkin carving/painting, arts and crafts***

Music 1.) A Musical Take on an Opportunity and S.T.E.A.M. There are many careers that justly and unjustly draw upon a biased subset. Until recently as a society, not much emphasis was applied to changing the gender equality gap in the field of electronically based technology. While strides to change this perspective have thankfully become mainstream, a microcosm of this antiquated perspective can be found in the music technology field. As a musician that studied at some of the premiere music schools of the county, I was afforded the opportunity to glimpse at some amazing innovators in this field. In retrospect, most people who were interested in this particular field were men. It was not their fault that they were pioneers and also men. However, we have an opportunity to change a subset that has no good reason to be biasedly based upon gender. https://tinyurl.com/y95mmdgo https://goo.gl/81sLNc Maybe they’ll ship across the pond if we ask nicely‌
