Back to School Integration and Career Exploration Sept. 22, 2017 VOLUME 6, ISSUE IV
Getting to Know You by Candi Legursky and Jennifer Noll
As we start back into the school year, and we are learning about our students and classes as a whole in order to group them in projects and/or centers, have you thought about using Applications and Processing Software to integrate technology? At our school, our students just received their 1:1 device today. An exciting time for sure, but for many of our students, they have not worked with iPads before so it takes time to introduce our students to the devices. We are learning as a school not to simply use the device as a substitution for a worksheet, but to have our students create presentations and projects to turn into us for evaluation. Although we have been in school for 2 weeks, we are using this week to have students create presentations about themselves on the iPad. One of the ideas we are using is for each student to use Keynote (or if you have Microsoft accessibility-Powerpoint) to create a trading card for themselves. On the trading card, they are
taking a picture of themselves and then telling us information such as their birthday, favorite subject, family members and writing a goal for themselves this year. They are able to format shapes and text boxes to add the information or for younger students who may not have the capabilities, the teachers are creating a template and using AirDrop to send out the template. During ELA time, students can practice their speaking and listening skills by presenting their trading card, and the audience can ask questions to the presenter. Another great idea to getting to know your students is to use TouchCast Studios (app for iPad) and a green screen to create an autobiography of themselves. They can use a news cast background and add pictures from their lives to explain the importance of the people and events. You can also have them use a timeline to present important dates in their lives. The TS app can then be used throughout

the year to give various reports (think a Live Report from National Parks and Monuments). As teachers at the beginning of the year, we are trying to figure out A) who works well together, but also B) what they already know. Of course we can give them a beginning of the year assessment or a group project using paper or pencil, but while the weather is nice, what about an interactive scavenger hunt outside on plants, on environments, finding math examples in the real world or finding example of various art definitions? You could create a scavenger hunt in Excel or Numbers that students go outside and take pictures of and then create a Keynote or Powerpoint presentation. You can observe who works well with who and who may need to work on social skills with others. Throughout the year, you could have students create scavenger hunts for their peers to complete on a unit of study.
Lastly, an idea for group work is to have the students interview each other and video tape their interviews. They can ask personal questions of each other to get to know each other As teachers, you teacher could have each student interview the others about previous knowledge on various topics, such as Math, Social Studies, Science or English. Teachers could view the interviews to see teamwork and use it as an informal assessment to design their units. Don’t be scared getting to know the technology you have at your fingertips to learn all about your students. You will be surprised at what your students will show you in their presentations when allowed to express their creativity..

Career Exploration for Elementary Students By: Jennifer Noll As middle and high school students are asked to think about their future careers as they choose a track of classes, we can help our younger students think of careers they may want to explore through the use of technology. Now with virtual reality being a reality and Google 360 allowing for virtual field trips, we can introduce students to all different types of careers instead of the ones we are able to invite to our Career Days. A website teachers may want to check out for careers that allow students to explore on their own or to have printouts of different types of careers, check out http://vacareerview.org/k5/. On this site, students may play matching games, explore unusual occupations, normal careers and even play a "Career Town" game with 23 different careers. This site is broken down into K-5 and 6-8. Teachers can have students research possible careers and create presentations using facts to present to their
classmates. This can be used to make a goal setting project where students would have to list possible classes they would need to take and steps to accomplish this goal. A more informational site teachers could use with older students is https://www.usa.gov/jobscareers. Students will discover more fact based information with a mix of YouTube videos explaining certain careers. Students could use the information to create their own informational videos to discuss their possible careers and why they would chose the career. For students of all ages, check out https://www.learningreviews.co m/educational/college-careersfree-websites-appskids/careers-vocations. Here, older students can watch tutorials on how to write a resume along with taking a career exploration tests to see where their interest may take them in a career. There are games for the students to play, but also factual based information. The site gives girls more information in going into the science based fields. For your students who love Space, NASA offers a career corner at
4
https://www.nasa.gov/audience /forstudents/58/career/index.html. On this site, they can listen to Podcasts about careers, profile people who work for NASA and talk about careers in Spaceflight. Whatever your students' interests in careers or where they may be in the career path, technology brings the real world into the classroom. Doing a Google search for career explorations will bring up many opportunities for students to explore and create within your classroom to create their goals for tomorrow. Explore these sites for your students so the world is opened to many possibilities.
