NASA Brings the Robotics By: Amy Hoffman The Elkins Mountain School kicked off summer school with a visit from NASA and 4 days of robotics engineering! Our students were excited to be given the opportunity to build and program Lego-style robotics from the ground up.
OIEP Facilities in WV
The students worked with a partner over a 4-day period to design, build, and program their robots to do a variety of movements; as well as, to incorporate flashing lights and sounds.
The NASA team, in conjunction with the teachers, gave the students creative freedom in a lot of areas to see what they could come up with. At the end of the week competitions took place to see which students’ programming was the most accurate and which robot had the best design to complete the tasks! This will give us the tools we need if we want to incorporate a robotics club.

Thinking Outside the Box By: Amy Hoffman With school starting for the 2016-2017 academic year, several OIEP (Office of Institutional Education Programs) teachers are excited to be included in the TIS cohort. Elkins Mountain School just received some amazing new technology for our CTE program. The students will now be trained and have access to a VeriQuest 3D printer, a banner printer, and design software. The students have been able to design and create banners, posters for classrooms, and some 3D objects in a wide variety of colors. In OIEP, the student access to technology has to be extremely monitored. Teachers love this set up because it allows for monitoring but student independence!
West Virginia History Made Easy! By: Michael Knopp
Nearpod! By: Bethany Pleyo
Have you ever found it difficult to incorporate WV History into your elementary classroom? The West Virginia State Museum has heard our cries and created a NEW fabulous resource available on the web. It includes standards aligned lessons, teacher resources, videos, and more. There are interactive games, maps, trivia, etc. For the past several years, Ripley Elementary 4th grade students have traveled to the West Virginia Cultural Center and I am disheartened at the lack of knowledge concerning West Virginia’s rich cultural heritage. With these lessons, students will obtain an appreciation and understanding of our heritage as West Virginians. Find more at http://wvstatemuseumed.wv.gov/elementary.html

History of Labor Day By: Hunter Ankrom The first observance of Labor Day happened in the late 19th century. By the end of the 19th century, Labor Day had become a national holiday to be recognized on the first Monday of September every year. Labor Day was designed to be a holiday to celebrate the workers of America and the achievements that they had reached. It comes during a time when a 12 hour work day, 7 days a week, just to make a living, was a very common sight. During this time, there were also many unsafe conditions and even children working in many occupations across the country. At this very hard and drab time of the American Industrialization, Labor Day becomes a much wanted and needed break for the men, women, and children, who worked so hard to build this country into what it is now.

Did You Know!? By: Michael Knopp You can now set up a Facebook page as a public figure that you can access and post to from your personal Facebook account. When creating this page, choose "create page" from the left side of you Facebook home screen. Choose "Artist, Band, or Public Figure" on the next page. You then can choose "teacher" from the drop down menu. Once you have created your teacher page, it will appear in your "favorites" menu even in your Facebook app. When you post to your teacher page, your posts will appear as your page's name (for example, my posts are from Mr. Knopp's 4th Grade Classroom at Ripley Elementary). It's a simple way to create a Facebook presence for your teacher persona without juggling multiple Facebook accounts! And knowing is half the battle!
