Pride and Prejudice*

(*sort of)

Since opening in Glasgow, Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) has taken London’s West End by storm winning the Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Now it’s coming home to Scotland with featuring members of the original Scottish cast. Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) is a unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story. Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance. This “smart, laugh out loud funny” (Daily Telegraph) show features a string of pop classics including "Young Hearts Run Free", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "You’re So Vain".

It’s the 1800s.

It’s party time. Let the ruthless matchmaking begin.

THE FIVE STAR COMEDY SENSATION RETURNS HOME TO SCOTLAND

Edinburgh folklore tells us that when Charles Dickens was visiting the city on a reading tour, a stroll through a kirkyard brought him to the tombstone of one Ebenezer Scroggie, inspiration struck and A Christmas Carol was born.

Join us on the snowy streets of the Old Town for a festive comedy as we revisit this celebrated Christmas tale of a miser redeemed. Writer and director Tony Cownie (Laurel & Hardy, The Venetian Twins, The Belle’s Stratagem) brings this famous festive story back to the city of its birth with a guest appearance from Edinburgh’s best-loved Victorian – Greyfriars Bobby!

A Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh production.

Adapted by Tony Cownie from the novel by Charles Dickens

Macbeth (an undoing)

When her husband returns victorious from the battlefield with a prophecy that he is to become King of Scotland, Lady Macbeth will stop at nothing to make their darkest ambitions a reality. The war is over but the battle for the throne has only just begun.

In her acclaimed plays This Restless House and The Duchess (of Malfi), Zinnie Harris reimagined classic texts, bringing the perspectives of their female characters centre stage. Shakespeare’s iconic Lady Macbeth is ruthless and driven, unstoppable in her pursuit of power, yet she quickly descends from strength to despair. Harris' thrilling new version revisits that trajectory asking if we have really heard the full story...

A Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh production. Supported by The Stephen W Dunn Theatre Fund.

By Zinnie Harris, in a new version after Shakespeare

You Bury

This story is about a city. A city of exhaust fumes, drunken phone calls, first kisses, hysteria, sweat and laughter. Cairo.

Coming of age in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, six young Egyptians navigate friendship, loss and secret Grindr dates in the city that made them.

Winner of The Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020, You Bury Me is an explosive, political debut from Ahlam about a generation emerging from a national trauma, determined to live and love freely.

Paines Plough, The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, The Women's Prize for Playwriting, 45North and Orange Tree Theatre co-production, in association with Bristol Old Vic.

Anna Karenina

Tolstoy’s masterpiece reimagined for The Lyceum stage.

When her brother’s affair is discovered, Anna Karenina crosses the country by train to help save his marriage. But on her arrival at the station, a charged encounter with a dazzling young cavalry officer sends Anna on a course of action that could destroy her own marriage and tear her life apart.

Meanwhile, rejected by his beloved, Kostya Levin vows never to marry. As Anna opens herself up to love, Kostya tries in vain to shut himself off from it.

Kindred spirits, Anna and Kostya are torn between desire and duty, sexual and parental love, self and society - and they won’t live a lie. In a world of fakery, public shaming and patriarchal oppression, they are compelled to live truly, and to truly live – or not live at all.

Castle Lennox

FreeOpenFamilyDay

When Annis, a young girl with autism, finds herself incarcerated in Lennox Castle Hospital, her first impulse is to try and escape the brutal regime of punishment and medication. However, as she gets to know her fellow patients they introduce her to another world – a world exploding with colour and song, an enchanted castle in which the once-amonth disco offers an alternative reality to the daily dose of pills and punishments.

Linda McLean (Glory on Earth at The Lyceum) has written a play with songs (by MJ McCarthy) about the strength, wit and resilience of those who were sent to Lennox Castle during a regime of segregation from the 1930s to the 1990s. This inspiring tale, based on a real institution, is brought to the stage in collaboration with the brilliant Lung Ha Theatre Company (Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery, We Are All Just Little Creatures).
