Data Visualisation

Process & Production - By Lydia Czolacz - U1250424

Briefing Recently we were given our new data visualisation brief: “Project/Assessment requirements: You must collect a suitable data set and write a full project proposal (your personal brief). Your research will need to be thematically clear and you should be prepared to present and justify it weekly in seminars and tutorials (during open studio sessions). Your research and project development should be presented in logical format, via your blog, and should be annotated with written reflection.”

Project/Assessment Task: Research and collect a suitable data set. Develop multiple options prior to developing your written project proposal. This proposal will become your personal project brief and will be expected to identify clear personal/professional aims and objectives. It will integrate reflections derived from your previous project and the formative assessment you received.” Upon first glances of the brief I am not entirely sure how I feel about it. This is due to the fact we did a similar brief last year and I was hoping we would have

more of a live brief from a company in which we can test our skills we have learn in year 1 and this year so far. I just don’t feel like we are really hitting into the heart of Graphic Design but I will have to look back and see how I feel about this when it comes to actually doing the brief.

What is data visualisation? Be fore getting into this brief I want to make sure I 100% know what data visualisation is, I got this quote from here. “Data visualization or data visualisation is the

creation and study of the visual representation of data, meaning “information that has been abstracted in some schematic form, including attributes or variables for the units of information” So from this I have gathered that data visualisation is something that is collated from a lot of data. This is then visualised in a graphic way to demonstrate what information has been gathered. This is a comparative task and it is not just a case of representing data, it has to be compared to something in order to make sense and to express data.

Examples

Brainstorm In order to help me gather ideas I made a little brainstorm of what I wanted to do. I looked at mainly four different ideas: 1. Social Media websites: I was going to look at websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc and collect data based on things like friends and photos. However, when I started to look into this more I found it too generic, it was a typical idea which I didn’t like and as it has been done so many times before I’d need it to be really

special for it to stand out. 2. Germany: I went on a recent trip to Germany and I was going to look at the “Weihnachtsmarkt” which are their Christmas Markets, I was going to compare them to the Leeds and Manhester ones however when looking at the stalls there really is no comparison. My experience in Germany was so much better than the experience one in Manchester and Leeds and i didn’t want that to show in my data else it wouldn’t be balanced.

After brainstorming I realised there wasn’t really anywhere to go with this. 3. Derelict buildings: This was an idea I did during the Summer for my project. I was going to use it in the previous brief but it didn’t fit. Unfortunately, I feel this is the case for this one too, the only data I could collect on this was the date the photo was taken and for some of them what the building was before. I don’t think it was suitable for this.

4. Music: Music is another topic that is slightly generic but I liked the fact it would be personal to me if I used my iTunes. I have such a wide taste in music I think it would be interesting to see visually what I listen to. I don’t even have to stick to iTunes I also have a YouTube account that I “like” and make playlists on which would be interesting to include. There is so much data I can collect from this too: artists, genres, plays, album art and much more. I think this idea is the most suitable one.

My Proposal Again, I have changed my topic so below is the newest proposal I have done. Project Proposal – ‘Data Visualisation’ Use this form to write, and submit, your proposal for this project. You are, in effect, writing your own detailed brief in response to the general project briefing. This process will prepare you for the final project of the year, which will be entirely self directed. It will be sent to your seminar tutor, so that the proposal can become the focus of discussions and feedback. It is important that you identify and describe your data set

in the Rationale (1).

Practice

Reflect on your formative assessment and feedback already received when you write your Aims (2) and Objectives (3) for this new project.

Your Project Title Enter your project title (if you have one).

The submission deadline for this proposal is Wednesday 11th December at 15.00 Feedback will be given on your proposal in your normal studio seminars on Thursday 19th December Student Name: LYDIA CZOLACZ Course / Module: Graphic Design / TID1162 Graphic Design – Professional

1 – Establish a Rationale (What is your project and the reason for doing it?) What is the theme/topic or body of knowledge? What is the need for this visual communication? Are you playing to your strengths both intellectually and practically? Is there potential for you to excel? Is there a defined context for this project, what is the thrust? Is the intention to inform, comment, promote, narrate etc? Do you understand, empathise, agree with or philosophise about the

subject matter or theme? Do you have sufficient depth of understanding to determine a suitable level of enquiry and analysis? Is the intended work intellectually challenging or lightweight? Has a defined audience been identified? Is there an envisaged client or type of client? This is my third resubmission of my proposal due to a lot of debate about past chosen topics. The theme for this project will be on receipts and I feel the need of visual communication of this is to see where mine and peers money is being spent, whether we are buying things that we need or

things that we want. I feel that this is a more suitable topic because looking into people’s psychology is the type of design I love doing. I feel like the intention of this will be to inform and maybe realise the extent to which we spend. I think it will be interesting and will be more to understand than to promote or empathise. I have gathered receipts I have and also my flatmates and feel this data would be interesting when put altogether infront of me to see. I feel the data is lightweight upon looking at it but it can definitely delve into a persons lifestyle. My audience would be other

design work, conception of ideas or originality I haven’t yet decided a is needed in order for specific form in which I’d your project to succeed? like to take this project What practical skills are in but I envisage a type required? How much of poster, maybe even an app that can give average visual material is to be spends and most popular completed e.g. visuals, items bought by students storyboards, artefacts, artworks etc? Have you and how this is effected 2 – Identify Aim/s (What is by wage. I am not sure yet established your own on a title and think this will timetable in order to it that you intend to do?) carry out this project? Is be developed during my Have you determined it realistic? What do you project. a final outcome and intend to gain or learn by what its form will be undertaking this project? 3 – Identify Objectives e.g. a children’s book, (How do you intend advertising campaign, I intend to gain a lot more carrying out the work?) a series of editorial knowledge of student commentaries, a research What intellectual skills spends and what they project, a computer game, do you need? How much are buying in the modern research and analysis an animated children’s culture. is required? How much series etc. Does the reference gathering is project or final outcome envisaged? How much have a title? students to see how their peers spend their money and to make them think if they are the same. The type of client I think would be interested in this would be a company trying to promote to this target audience.

My Data in Excel

Emotional Cartography

So when beginning my research I thought a good place to start was to recap over the artists work we were given on the first presentation when we looked at the brief. When I looked at it again I realised there was this that caught my eye. “Emotional Cartography is a book put together by many artists, designers, psychogeographers, cultural researchers, futurologists and

neuroscientists. It contains many essays that they have written and was put altogether by Christian Nold. Inside it explores the scientific, cultural and political emotional effects of people using different technology. http:// emotionalcartography.net/ EmotionalCartography. pdf is a link to the full online PDF document. Looking through it it is really visually appealing.

I particularly like the cover, contents page and a middle picture which contains the data visualisation. I really like the colour layout of all these pages and especially on the cover which can relate back to layers of colour on top of one another, something I was looking to do in my own personal work. The contents page is simplistic but manages to sticks to the house style

of the book. I like how the way the dark colours are at the top and blend further down like they do in the cover page. As well as this the ending data visualisation image is appealing to look at, it is easy to read and displays the information straight and straight to the point despite there being a lot going on. This is something I am going to look at doing for my own work.

David Bowker This is again off the brief presentation that was given to us and I absolutely love this kind of idea. The idea behind these series of images was that Dave Bowker wanted to experiment with the way in which normal news was represented each day.

in more detail it would be the third image. The reason I have picked this one is because seen as though I’m doing music I believe this could be something I look into doing to represent what I want to do.

I think visually this set is perfect to look at. I particularly like the way that certain words on the words one intervene with the actual topic of the word for example “SPAIN is written with the Spanish flag through it.

It would also fit in well with the layers idea of having layers building up on each section of the map, so they would be able to stand as individual pieces but also as a collection of data to form one big piece when put together.

I particularly like the colour scheme of these and it is consistent through each one. If I were to pick one to look

I could use this as maybe a bit of a template and mock up a CD using the lines, this is something I will try in my development.

Box Office Receipts

So just from typing into Google about data visualisation this link popped up which studied box office receipts in films from the period 1986 to 2008. I really like this type of work and I feel it is effective as a wave as it is suitable for the topic of analysing a lot of data. It is also effective as it shows the lows and dips straight away and even though there is a lot of data you can see it straight by looking at it. The only thing is with this particular set of data is that this is on a much larger scale than what my data envisages, despite this, it

is also good to take from it the practicality of this piece of work and look at the way in which larger scale data is represented, just because mine isn’t on the same level doesn’t mean I can’t take things from this and learn from this. My plan now is to carry on ahead by writing down things I like from each piece of research and combining them together to make the ultimate data visualisation set.

Receipt Redesign Af ter searching the internet some more I came accross this piece of graphics which really caught my eye. It was data visualisation called “Receipt Redesign.” It pretty much states in the title what it is but I found it was a nice way of looking at the project. This could definitely be a way forward for me in my project. This nice little design was created by a London design consultancy called “BERG.” Their aim was to redesign a normal and typical till receipt and make it into a little infographic containing the amount of calories in the purchases made. The information is redesigned into a paper app which is very informative and contextualises the information given. There is also an

area for customer interaction as their are parts of the receipt which is rippable and can be ticked to suit the buyer’s needs for a more personal shopping experience next time. I feel like this could be another option and looking at this i already have an idea to analyse my receipt and maybe to make a large print on the topics that arise mostly in the receipt data, for example, a receipt on clothes analysing the average spend and most typical item of purchase, this can also be done for food however I could look at the balance between healthy and junk food, average spend, or even if there is a big purchase, analyse the big purchase all in one.

“Movies So Nice They Made Thrice This data set also caught my eye because of the style of the little icons. This looks at again, movies, but I feel it has a different take on it compared to the last one I looked at to do with the same topic. I feel this is more suited to my target audience therefore this is something which I thought I would look at as to why this does that. The first thing I picked up on was the take of the pixels that are used and how they are comedic. They take snapshots from iconic movies ad are put in a visual way. I also like how the information is nicely slipped

in there on top of each graphic. This makes it easy and practical to understand and needs only little text to communicate what is needed to know. What I took from this data set was the style of it, this could possibly be another idea of mine or something which I combine with another idea for it to work. I thought I could maybe represent items with pixeled graphics as I think this would definitely interest my target audience. I could also possibly mock up a level game around this, again like an app version of an interactive receipt.

Design of a Sign The reason I chose this data set to look at is because it’s useful for two reasons, understanding how layout effects the way in which a person views a text and also the layout, double the research! I did mainly choose this for the layout because I thought it looked visually pleasing and straight to the point, something in which i want my project to also include. I like the way that there are smaller vs larger parts which again is something I need to

take into account. It also reiterates what we learnt about having a grid behind to help us layout things efficiently and for it to look professional. This also shows me the things I need to consider when making a graphic, things that are important throughout. This is definitely something I will keep referring to for help, I may even print this off for reference.

The Lonely Planet

This next graphic is based on a survey that The Lonely Planet did based on their fans’ bucket list of where and what they would like to eat before they die. I thought this would be good to relate to my topic because mine will be based on physical objects, especially food and clothes and I feel that this would be something that I can definitely work with.

I really like this style of making little icons for each object that is brought into the equation and I really think it suits my target audience and purpose of the topic which is to inform and show what students do spend their money on, it is also something that will be easily used to help put in perspective the amount we spend, for example, I could change the size of the boxes to suit how regular the item was bought.

Left VS Right World

This is another one I stumbled upon whilst looking through and I really like the style of it and feel this is something I could definitely work with but just adapt it. For example, instead of just comparing two sections I could compare a few together in order to get a better widespread of data. I could include little graphics I make on Illustrator to represent each item.

Sketchbook Idea 1 This is my first idea looking at the data brief. I like this idea because it communicates my data in a way that is interesting and can also be easily followed. The idea of having the prices in the key helps me and I’m sure it helps others to visualise things by colour. By this layout I could also create a layered document which means each price can stand alone as a single document. I could also

maybe experiment with having the first page of the document whole except put the circle empty and have the other prices on different sheets behind. I would clip it together with a butterfly pin in order to be able to take sections out so the focus was just on one and I’d be able to put a plain white sheet at the back which would act as the background because I’d have to use acetate.

Sketchbook Idea 2

This is idea 2 of my data visualisation brief. This idea I have named “Receipt Re-design” in which is pretty self-explanatory. I would make a series of prints which would be designed to show each category of item bought. The only reason I don’t think this would work as well as my other idea is because I feel this is more infographics than data visualisation.

Sketchbook Idea 3

This idea was my least favourite idea but I thought it would be good to include to show my thinking through this project. This idea was meant to act as a comparative way of looking at each category and their total spends however whilst drawing this I ran out of ideas and began to draw graphs which I didn’t like and decided this idea was not the best to carry on.

Testing Shapes This sketchbook scan in looks at the way I tested different shapes to see which would work well for my data visualisation brief, I lightly crossed out the ones I thought wouldn’t work to my standards. This acted as part of my development.

Combining Shapes This looks at me trying to combine the two shapes I think worked best and that was the circle and the triangle, by adding more depth to the document I would be able to add more depth to the data, I feel if I followed this idea of cutting it out and putting it on acetate it would work really well for the middle circle to be a space. Thinking about this maybe laminating the final product would act as a protector to the document and would keep the pages clean.

Development This is just a really quick mock up and experimental piece I did on Illustrator relating back to my designs I completed in my sketchbook. This is really a time for trialling to see what works well and what I can achieve from different shape layouts. This is using the circle embedded in the triangle and the idea of this is to try and break up the design slightly. So after some experimenting and looking back at my drawings I have come to this so far. I have took a very minimalistic approach to the brief because I believe the colours in the final design will be able to do most of the narrative for itself. As you can see in this picture I have begun typing

in the components and alphabetically ordered them to one side ready to place onto my design. The size of them may have to change depending where they sit but I intend to wrap these around the left side of the circle, following a past mock up I created. As you can see my work is starting to fit together. I like the way the names of the shops are down that side and I will continue this style throughout the graphic especially with the categories and also time period in which the item was bought. The way I will go about this is to look at the earliest and latest time and work out on average whether to go up in half an hours or simply hours.

Further Development

This is the development stage 4 which I have managed to reach today. I have added a time frame, categories and also a key at the top which relates back to the price of each item bought. What I think I will do with this now is put all the lines for each price on separate layers and look at the graphic as a whole but then also look at the lines individually and see if there’s enough data

for each price stand alone. Despite this thinking I could maybe take the prices of the ones with the most and put them on a separate graphic but I would need to test that first. I have also added small circles half in and half out the circle, these will act as pointers of where the lines are going to meet. I really like the look of this so far.

Final Idea

This is the graphic I have created for this brief. I am very happy with it and feels it communicates information both through the information on it but also just by looking at it we can come to some visual conclusions which is what the brief stated in the first place. I was contemplating making the graphic layered with each price on a separate sheet however I feel this would ruin the effect of the graphic itself. I

am now happy to move on to the other briefs set to us. This was before I spoke to my tutor who pointed out that the work wasn’t to the best of m y ability. I decided that even though I really like this idea I need to look for something to communicate the data visualisation how I want to and in a way that is so presentable it looks neat, tidy and like myself I want it to be very quirky and show my graphic personality.

Re-Visited

So after looking at my old “finished” version of the Data Visualisation brief I realised I wasn’t so happy with it. It was messy and if I’m honest I didn’t feel like it communicated what I wanted it to do, especially after speaking to a tutor. Therefore, I sat down and wrote what I felt would make the piece better, without it being too cluttered so no one could read it. The images from my notebook can be found below here:

These images show the short brainstorm I had with joe on how I can improve my work. I need to start looking at the data individually so they can stand alone but also expanding the final outcome so they can be used as a series or altogether. He told me I should think about making the work quite minimalistic so that data can be easily read or seen from just a first glance.

The Max Planck Institute

This is something that Joe showed me in the short tutorial session we had. It was taken from The Guardian website and is an interactive chart demonstrating migration flows between countries from 1970 to 2007. The reason I like these graphs is because they are very similar to what I want to do, minimalistic but the use of colour makes it look very professional and can easily see data compared to one and other without having to strain looking at the image.

This also follows the way in which I wanted to create a series of data rather than just one static image which may have too much going on to be able to make any decisions just like the first one I created when I thought I had finished this brief. I like the colour scheme and the minimalistic approach of this so if I were to take this idea further it would definitely be of that sort.

Nicholas Feltron Reports These are annual reports released by Feltron every year. Each one represents something different which will be explained in the ones I choose to look at in greater detail, and they belong to the 2012 one.

interaction with other people and how often this happens, daily activities he does, also locations he visits and how far they are away from his primary location. I think that the way he has developed these reports is somewhat iconic and also visually pleasing.

The reason I love these so much is because the data I think from this I have visualisation is very simple decided to take the format yet straight to the point. The of a series of pages I want to colours contrast against each other but not in a bad way and create regarding my data set. this does something I want I need to think about this work to achieve in my own work: very carefully and try and find a way in which I can adapt making a clear mark that the data is varied straight away data visually like Feltron does so well here. I also really like and you can see by looking at the way he summarises each the image a comparison. set below it (or by the side in the first photo’s case) to Each topic is taken from clarify what the data shows. things Feltron does in his day to day life such as:

Development

Idea Change and Logo As I was working on this design for my project I came to realise that this was not fitting my needs for this brief. Where was this going? What was I trying to show? I had no idea so I decided to start again, still using graphics I had developed but in a more sufficient way. I decided to head down the route of App deisgn as I thought this would appeal to my target audience - students because everyone seems to have some kind of smartphone these days. It will be called “MySpend and the idea behind the App is that it will look at student spending, not only as an individual but also, if

allowed by the person, will be available publicly to keep a track of spending and also allow your friends to view your recent proud purchases. The App I decided to demonstrate will show the following pages: App Login/front face, user profiles, location access, nearby map access and also to show what it would be like to select a point on the map that wasn’t yours. I feel that this App idea is a lot stronger than my original plan because it is visualising data in a modern way and is not a drastic change as old graphics created can still be used in the app.

Planning

This is a photo to show my rough plan before actually developing the app idea. I did in fact come up with the logo first because I believe once you have that it is easier to work out the house style of the App which would make finding colours easier so I could make it look professional.

I think this is a really effective way of me showing my collected data and I have made the app so it targets students and is by students which would be good on the marketing side of my project.

I have developed 18 pages for this app and they include a loading page, a login page, I wanted to show a range choosing area page, a homepage, 6 user pages, of pages and also how 4 bigger map pages, my initial idea to make a notification page, a a big map would be wishlist page and an edit included in this project. profile page. Therefore, using the layout I had come up These will follow a with I split my receipts similar layout to stay into 4 different people with the theme of it (the people I have being a social media collected them off) and app and appealing to made a map for each fo students. those people.
