Chosen Audio DEBRA KIDD “BUILDING POSSIBLE FUTURES
Debra Kidd is not only an author but a teacher too, she strongly believes that education has become fixated on conformity and compliance at the expense of creativity.
MORE ABOUT KIDD
Kidd is a teacher, doctor, trainer and associates for many companies wanting to aid the education curriculum. She has become a wellknown person in the industry for promoting creativity and improving the educational system by hosting talks, writing articles and books which are then passed on to relevant sources.
OUR SAY
Why we chose Debra Kidd Charlotte: Deborah Kidd is a strong inspiration and I greatly appreciate
I could take in the arts. I believe, strongly, that children should be
what she stands for. She believes in creativity in education and in way
encouraged to follow their dreams and passions, whether this is in the

hate to see kids losing out on. This was one of the main reasons we
take, and this was what attracted me to Debra Kidd's talk.
chose this audio along with the fact we found it a lot more fun with so many different ideas we could use throughout the animation.
Lydia: The reason I was drawn to Debra Kidd’s talk was that it is a very current issue and when I was at school I wanted to be a fashion
Emma: I tried to pursue a career in science in school, even though my
designer, the school and my parents supported me and I fully believe
favourite classes and hobbies were all art based. But I was never told
that without any of that I would not be where I am today. It's so
of or encouraged to pursue careers in the arts, so it never really
important to keep a range of subjects in the curriculum and if you
occurred to me to follow my passions. It was only after two years of

LYDIA Strengths: I feel like I personally work best using a mixture of both handmade and digital processes. I enjoy working with Adobe Illustrator and Indesign and one of my biggest strengths when using Illustrator is being able to convert any hand drawn image to a vector. I also find layout to be a strong point of mine, I enjoy testing the boundaries of design and also don’t feel scared to try new things. Weaknesses: I have never done animation or developed an animation before therefore working with programmes like After Effects or Cinema 4D are difficult. I also feel sometimes I put so much effort into development my final pieces aren’t as good as my development, or I am influenced by a completely different idea half way through which effects my finals. I am also the biggest critic of my own work, I am never fully pleased with anything I create because I am constantly looking for areas of improvement. This can sometimes be a good thing but also sometimes is a burden as I spend so much time tweaking and editing stuff to the point where I have lost track of the point of my work.
CHARLOTTE Strengths: Strong use of mixed medium. Like to play around with both handmade and digital media. Strong skills on Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign with Illustrator being my strongest. As a Graphic Design my style is more set on Illustrating, I like to play around with ink and pencil. I also heavily enjoy Vector illustrations and hope to improve on this. Strong eye for detail. Weaknesses: My writing and reading skills aren’t the best meaning I have to take a lot longer then usual to do any activity using these skills. Sometimes try to over perfect too much in draft pieces. I am weak with software such as after effects and hope to build on these with this project. I have never made a moving image or stop motion so this will be a new skill I will be working on. My time planning isn’t the best but with the help of the timetable and teamwork this is a easy obstacle.
EMMA Strengths: I have strong knowledge of multiple mediums, including sculptural and drawn. I am confident in using both traditional and digital illustration methods, with my strongest being pencil and Photoshop. Although I am an animation student, I prefer illustration and sculptural processes, although I have plenty of knowledge of most animation methods, including hand drawn, stop motion and 2D. I enjoy designing narratives and story elements, creating characters and worlds from scratch. I have great organisation, reading and writing skills. Weaknesses: I have very little knowledge of Illustrator or InDesign, and I’m definitely not great with layout, although I’m working hard to improve in it. I have a tendency to jump straight into a project with one idea and begin working on it immediately, instead of exploring as many possibilities and avenues as I can. This often means that when I am required to do preliminary research and exploration to fulfil my work requirements, I find a new and better idea to pursue and have to begin my project again with a much closer deadline. I’m also a perfectionist with my work, which can be a good thing, but often results in me spending too much time on development work and ideas, but I’m also hoping to work on this during the RSA project.

The final campaign we looked at aimed to celebrate art, culture, creativity and to help inspire others to become involved. This is a pivotal campaign in highlighting the culture and creativity we have across the UK. We feel this is a direction we would like to take this brief and apply this to the educational system.

DEPENDENCE/INDEPENDENCE/INTERDEPENDENCE These stages of life are key to not only child development but also helps us to decide what audience to target. The idea is, at the dependent stage we are all conformists who depend on someone else and have little responsibility. Independence is when a person becomes balanced between working with their own initiative and utilising others to achieve. Interdependence is a collaborator, someone who is

Our Ideologies
Inspire creativity within teachers across all subjects.
Aspire children to dream.
Reforming educational perspectives.
Audience Primary Audience Our primary audience is the educational system. Their unmet need is being able to express within their chosen field. Our aim is to offer reassurance to teachers they are still fulfilling requirements of basic subjects but are able to still enable imagination.
Secondary Audience Our secondary audience is the RSA themselves, they focus on designing for a social change, something we are trying to do through this animation.
Tertiary Audience Our tertiary audience is children and parents, we hope this video could become part of teaching training or even the curriculum. this could be used to assure teachers that the educational system is doing its job to inspire.

IDEA IN FIRST SESSION
After listening to the audio we had the first idea of attempting to create an animation using children’s drawings. We wanted to make these drawings come to life in the animation a create a nice flow and relationship between them. The only was with this idea is it seemed to have a lot more negatives than positives. It meant we would need permission to be able to go into a school and speak to children and then we would also have to take into account ethics and make sure we would not be using any information regarding the children. We decided to not use this idea in the end because of the complications. Right is a letter we prepared if we were to continue with this idea.

Island Ideas Each person in our team went and designed an element with the brief of creating an island that contains symbolism from each subject taught in school. We then met and discussed elements we liked from each island to combine them into one final image. This image would be the base for our animation.

DEVELOPMENT
Story Board This is our storyboard for our animatic, each stage depicts a change in motion within the animation. The idea is that at the beginning ties with the speech about cutting images out of her mum’s magazines. we then move on to the idea of this fantasy island which we created to represent the different subjects in the educational system.
Animatic This is the animatic developed from the storyboard and shows how the audio is going to go alongside the image shown. this is a very simple animatic and we are aware there are long pauses, this will be changed throughout the development of the animatic. This means we won’t have a “set ending and leaves room for improvement if necessary.
