FINAL PRESENTATION

TAXONOMY My aim of this project was originally aimed at doing something with Urbexing (which I do outside of University) but was then changed to exploring the idea of analysing a person simply by their handwriting. In this journey I discovered knew concepts like psychoanalysis and graphology and introducing a scientific approach to random notes found in the streets. The brief was to somehow represent your collection and I decided the best way to do this was by creating an online magazine and also a mock-up of a museum exhibition in which the magazine would accompany this and give greater detail to my findings. This is why the magazine can also act like a museum guide accessed by a smart phone by using the mobile scan codes which are available on a variety of mediums. I also produced two ISSUU’s documents which presented my development and research and another which was my actual final magazine. This is also presented on my WordPress blog and I have linked all relevant websites in the files located in this section of my CD. In final outcomes you can also view the museum mock-up I have created which shows the final exhibition with the QR code beside it. I have also produced iPhone mock-ups to show how my guide/magazine can work on that medium. Overall I feel like this is a really effective way of presenting my notes and this is something which I enjoyed doing and considering carrying it on as a side project.

This is my collection of notes I found on the streets around Huddersfield and Manchester. This is to show the presentation of them and the colour in the background is used to reflect the museum display route I wanted to go down. In order to mock it up I went out and bought frames, painted them all one colour, black, for my museum display.

This idea looked at the way I was going to illustrate what I thoguht the person would look like and also me giving a psychoanalysis profile of how I thought the person would be and their thinking at the time. I liked this idea but I thought it was hard to do given the time limit.

This idea was to do with making a book that would include an image of the note following the museum style and a psychoanalysis of what I thought the profile of the person would be.

This one looked at making an installation with a case which would hold my museum guide. This was the most practical idea I had and I thought the most effective.

Museum cases were my next idea but I made an idea I would like it to look like and a more realistic version. In the end I didn’t like this idea as I preferred the installation on one.

This is my final idea which consisted of combining the idea of having an installation and a book to go with it which gives the explanations and psychoanalysis of each note. I really liked this idea because I think it shows my collection in an interesting way and a way that is clear and can be referred to from the museum installation to the museum guide. I like the depth that this idea has. The next slides look at the way in which this idea became practical.

This was the next stage of the process in my project I was explaining about in my last page. The one before this looked at the notes scanned in with a background and this looks more at the process of framing (shown in the YouTube screenshots) and photos of them being framed. De-framing: The de-framing process can be shown in a YouTube video I made here. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ms9iHcNQGOA The next stage was to frame all my images and take photos of them. As I thought 30 would be a lot to show I chose a few to demonstrate how they would look after framing, some before and some after the edited photos.

These images show the de-framing process I went through. The frames are all bought from charity shops and the image on the right is them all painted black afterwards.

Data Visualisation I have gone through so many ideas with this data visualisation brief starting from my book collection to my iTunes music library. I originally wanted to use the collection I did over Summer but somehow that turned into me using them for my Taxonomy project therefore I collected receipts off 4 different people over the span of 3 months based around Huddersfield. The aim was to present this data in a way that would be informal yet also graphically pleasing. The brief consisted of us collecting our own data, not using any websites to which I then put in a spreadsheet to help me view the results better. I looked at time of purchase, location, price, shop name, how many things were bought at the store and also spend amount. I then decided to focus on 4 of those which were: location, price, regularity of purchases and shop name as this would help to determine spends over 3 months. I was going to include category but I felt this was explanatory in the nature of the shops. I did encounter a slight problem with this project as I began with an idea but when it finished it did not come out how I wanted it to. It was messy and the data was unreadable which is why I changed my design to an App called MySpend which would act as a social media medium for students to be able to share purchases and also create wishlists. Much like all of my projects I have also created an Issuu file which contains all my research and thought process during this project which the link can be found in the folder, as well as being on my blog (again link in folder). Overall after figuring out what I wanted to present I enjoyed this brief and I am happy with the result and think that the app looks professional.

The following pages will look at my data in a spreadsheet.

This is my first idea looking at the data brief. I like this idea because it communicates my data in a way that is interesting and can also be easily followed. The idea of having the prices in the key helps me and I’m sure it helps others to visualise things by colour. By this layout I could also create a layered document which means each price can stand alone as a single document. I could also maybe experiment with

having the first page of the document whole except put the circle empty and have the other prices on different sheets behind. I would clip it together with a butterfly pin in order to be able to take sections out so the focus was just on one and I’d be able to put a plain white sheet at the back which would act as the background because I’d have to use acetate. This is the idea I chose.

This is idea 2 of my data visualisation brief. This idea I have named “Receipt Re-design” in which is pretty self-explanatory. I would make a series of prints which would be designed to show each category of item bought. The only reason I don’t think this would work as well as my other idea is because I feel this is more infographics than data visualisation.

This idea was my least favourite idea but I thought it would be good to include to show my thinking through this project. This idea was meant to act as a comparative way of looking at each category and their total spends however whilst drawing this I ran out of ideas and began to draw graphs which I didn’t like and decided this idea was not the best to carry on.

First idea development and final. This didn’t work out because the idea was too messy so this is when I got the other app idea.

Development 3

So after looking at my old “finished” version of the Data Visualisation brief I realised I wasn’t so happy with it. It was messy and if I’m honest I didn’t feel like it communicated what I wanted it to do, especially after speaking to a tutor. Therefore, I sat down and wrote what I felt would make the piece better, without it being too cluttered so no one could read it. The images from my notebook can be found below here: These images show the short brainstorm I had with joe on how I can improve my work. I need to

start looking at the data individually so they can stand alone but also expanding the final outcome so they can be used as a series or altogether. He told me I should think about making the work quite minimalistic so that data can be easily read or seen from just a first glance.

As I was working on this design for my project I came to realise that this was not fitting my needs for this brief. Where was this going? What was I trying to show? I had no idea so I decided to start again, still using graphics I had developed but in a more sufficient way. I decided to head down the route of App deisgn as I thought this would appeal to my target audience - students because everyone seems to have some kind of smartphone these days. It will be called “MySpend and the idea behind the App is that it will look at student spending, not only as an individual but also, if allowed by the person, will be available publicly to keep a track of spending and also allow

your friends to view your recent proud purchases. The App I decided to demonstrate will show the following pages: App Login/front face, user profiles, location access, nearby map access and also to show what it would be like to select a point on the map that wasn’t yours. I feel that this App idea is a lot stronger than my original plan because it is visualising data in a modern way and is not a drastic change as old graphics created can still be used in the app.

COMPETITION YCN - BEAR When I first saw this brief on the YCN awards site I knew I wanted this to try my own little experiments, it was also a chance for me to do more computer generated design than hand-made design but I thought it would be good to try and at least explore both genres. The brief was to re-design BEAR packaging – either following the same route they had done and expanding on the idea or to completely re-design it from scratch. I spent a lot of time trying to think of ways that were original and came up with the idea of creating an origami box. The problems I had with this were that it was hard to develop something so small and not complicated that would actually turn into something when finished. I felt this idea was not possible to do considering the requirement that it needed to be able to fit on the cereal packaging box. In the end I decided to opt for a similar design but change things up a bit: I wanted more games and some online interaction from the box so I added QR codes and also a unique code which could be found in a little invitation inside the box. I also made this fun by making it so you had to figure out how to open it, for example, in order to find the code on the circus invitation you have to open the tent. I have also created a research document and Behance layout to present my work on so you can see it altogether. Overall I enjoyed this brief and felt like I improved my illustration skills and adapted my graphic skills in ways I didn’t think I could.

These are some characters and vectors I created to fit the circus theme I was going for. I liked these because I think they fit the brief’s purpose of remaining child friendly, The next pages will look at the development of my circus box.
