1957 - ALBERS INFLUENCE
When I studied Albers’ work I was struck by the tremendous possibilities opened up by his series of lithographs ‘Constellations’, in which he expressed multi-dimensional space by means of solid shapes empty of line. There seemed from this to be a new way to explore: to build the whole rectangle starting from the edge of the surface of the picture so as to distort, virtually, the rectangle or square. In this period I minimized color as much as I could, concentrating on drawing the space itself. The shapes would be virtually solid, but able to suggest a variety of spaces, depending on the angle which the viewer took. Out of this series came the first surface-picture in which the Organic Line was completely integrated, its function being solely to give the surface its autonomy. I called this period of my work “Surface Modulation”. FIG 4 Stick on the numbered surfaces and see the difference between the drawn line and that which I called the ‘Organic’.
